Martin Amis on Vladimir Nabokov's work

17 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Vladimir Nabokov's unfinished novella, The Original of Laura, is being published despite the author's instructions that it be destroyed after his death. Martin Amis confronts the tortuous questions posed by a genius in decline

Language leads a double life – and so does the novelist. You chat with family and friends, you attend to your correspondence, you consult menus and shopping lists, you observe road signs (Look Left), and so on. Then you enter your study, where language exists in quite another form – as the stuff of patterned artifice. Most writers, I think, would want to go along with Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977), when he reminisced in 1974:

". . . I regarded Paris, with its gray-toned days and charcoal nights, merely as the chance setting for the most authentic and faithful joys of my life: the coloured phrase in my mind under the drizzle, the white page under the desk lamp awaiting me in my humble home. »

Official Posters for ‘The Road’ and ‘Youth In Revolt’ Released

22 October 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

We got quite a bit of different stuff sent to us here at The Flickcast. Some of it is pretty cool like trailers for upcoming movies, game videos, comics previews and things of that nature. We also get a lot of movie poster art sent to us and some of it is also pretty cool. Case in point are the two new “official’ posters for The Road and Youth in Revolt.

Both poster feature what so many do these days, large pictures of the principal actors and a clever or meaningful tag line. Also, both are different than previous posters that have been released for these films. In addition, on the poster for The Road, Mortensen is clearly holding a gun so you don’t think this is just a movie about people talking and, curiously, the names of the writer and director appear again in larger print at the »

Three Hot Books You Can't Download

30 September 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

What do Vladimir Nabokov, Frida Kahlo, and Ted Kennedy have in common? (You know, other than the fact that they’re all dead and each has generated his or her share of controversy.) They all have new books, just published or forthcoming, that won’t be downloadable any time soon.

E-books are a small but growing part of the publishing business. Wholesale revenues for U.S. publishers have steadily increased every quarter for the past seven years, reaching nearly $40 million at the end of June 2009, according to the International Digital Publishing Forum.

But traditional publishing is a business that’s often reactive, according to one industry insider, even with titles that are sure to stir up sales. For now, Kennedy's, Kahlo's, and Nabokov's publishers are digging in their heels and sticking to their old-school page-turning guns. So they'll hold off digital distribution, despite the rising popularity and profitability of e-books »

'Lolita' Invades America: Wake-Up Video

18 August 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The idea that a novel could come out and be really, truly shocking and scandalous simply because of its content is a fairly remote notion circa 2009. There are certainly memoirs and Hollywood tell-alls that stir up a bit of controversy, but generally speaking the only fiction books that ever make any noise are the ones that cross over into the more general pop culture conversation (and also tend to be aimed at kids — your "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" books). But on August 18, 1958, Vladimir Nabokov's now-legendary novel "Lolita" was first published in America (having already been published in France and Russia three years prior). The book caused an incredible stir, and it's not shocking to see why: The book follows the thoughts of narrator Humbert Humbert, a professor from Paris who is obsessed with young women. He moves to a small American town and ends up seducing a 12-year-old girl »

Wood's Lolita Obsession Leads To Glasses Collection

7 August 2009 1:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Evan Rachel Wood is so obsessed with Vladimir Nabokov's controversial novel Lolita she has a huge collection of heart-shaped sunglasses, just like the ones the author's heroine, an alluring teen temptress, wears.

Her literary love also inspired ex-lover Marilyn Manson, who penned the song Heart-Shaped Glasses in tribute to his girlfriend.

She says, "My apartment is covered with different kinds of heart-shaped glasses. My goal was to bring them back." »

Top 7 Book to Film Adaptations

23 July 2009 3:08 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

With Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opening last week, I thought I’d take a look back at my favorite book to film adaptions. This means I had to have read the book and seen the film, so I can’t weigh in on The Thin Man, though it’s one of my favorite films. I also steered clear of The Prestige because though I’ve read and enjoyed both, they’re so dissimilar it doesn’t really feel like a true adaption. Sorry, no Harry Potter film has made the list. I haven’t felt that any of the films have lived up to the books, even the most recent. But with Julie and Julia and one of my favorite books, The Time Traveler’s Wife coming out next month maybe it will change in the future.

'Bruno' Star Sacha Baron Cohen Is Just One Of Hollywood's Top Cinematic Chameleons

14 July 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

How weird is it that, out of Sacha Baron Cohen’s three trademark characters, Ali G is now the least famous of them all? With this past weekend’s strong “Brüno” opening, the UK-born and raised funnyman has once again fooled the world into believing that he is someone else. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess, but as we play Monday-morning quarterback there is an even more pressing question: is Cohen the greatest cinematic "chameleon" of all time?

There are few things I love more in a movie than when an actor fully immerses himself in another persona. Sometimes it’s for comedy, sometimes it’s for drama... but whatever the performance is in the name of, when done right it can make that performer a legend. Below are my favorite "chameleon" actors of all time. Post your thoughts in the comments section and tell us where »

Anthony Harvey Recalls Directing "The Lion In Winter" At Loews Jersey City

1 May 2009 1:14 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

(L to R) Cinema Retro contributing writer Todd Garbarini, editor-in-chief Lee Pfeiffer and Anthony Harvey at the Loews Jersey City.

By Lee Pfeiffer

Last Friday, I attended the special screening of The Lion in Winter at the Loews Theatre, the classic movie palace in Jersey City, New Jersey. Not only did I want to see the highly acclaimed film on the big screen for the first time, but the event also allowed me to meet with my old friend, Anthony Harvey who directed the 1968 classic. It had been a few years since I had seen Tony, who I first met when I was writing the Sony DVD documentary on the making of Dr. Strangelove. Tony had been Stanley Kubrick's editor on that film as well as Lolita and it was Kubrick himself who persuaded Tony to try his hand at directing. I was pleased to see Tony looking as »

Penguin to Publish Last Nabokov Novel

17 April 2009 5:08 PM, PDT | newser.com | See recent newser news »

The unfinished manuscript that Lolita novelist Vladimir Nabokov ordered destroyed after his death will hit bookstores in November, The Bookseller reports. Penguin Classics, which acquired The Original of Laura from Nabokov's son Dimitri in a six-figure deal, will reproduce the index cards on which Laura was written alongside transcriptions of the text. Knopf will simultaneously release it in the Us. Penguin Classics editor Alexis Kirschbaum visited Dmitri's home in Montreaux for 3 days before purchasing the work. "It was quite emotional for Dimitri because it was a big decision to publish, which took him decades," Kirschbaum said. A darkly comic ... »
