Warning: Contains some spoilers for ‘Dot And Bubble’
For anyone who might’ve found last week’s folk horror-inflected episode of Doctor Who, ‘73 Yards’, a little too ambiguous, you’ll have no such quibbles with the series’ follow-up offering, ‘Dot And Bubble’. A candy-coloured cautionary tale about the perils of tech dependency and online echo chambers set in a world where everybody lives in literal social media bubbles, the fifth episode of Russell T. Davies’ Who reboot is about as subtle as a flatulent Slitheen. But unsubtle doesn’t necessarily mean ineffective, and despite the heavy-handedness of its opening throes, Davies’ Black Mirror-riffing latest eventually builds to a flooring sucker punch of a finale that would stop even Charlie Brooker in his tracks.
After the darkness of ‘Boom’ and the wintry chill of ‘73 Yards’, ‘Dot And Bubble’ sees Davies whisk viewers away to Finetime, a pastel-paletted, domed-in alien idyll populated by rich-kid human colonists.

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “73 Yards”.
Doctor-Lite stories have so far been very good, which raises the possibility that the thing that′s really holding back Doctor Who is Doctor Who.
As you may know, Ncuti Gatwa was finishing filming his last series of Sex Education for Netflix while “73 Yards” was being filmed, and so the episode was pushed onto the array of ′Doctor-Lite′ stories (put simply: ones in which the Doctor doesn′t appear very much). The idea of doubling up the filming of episodes and balancing the cast accordingly has been in place since the show returned in 2005, with it formally being named as a budget-saving strategy in 2007 with “Blink”. They may also be referred to as “double-banking” episodes where two episodes are filmed simultaneously and so the regular cast can’t substantially appear in both.

Millie Gibson this weekend offered her heartfelt thoughts on the Doctor Who episode that stirred opinions in fans of the long-running sci-fi franchise.
The “fifth” episode (including “The Church on Ruby Road”) of “Season 1” (or Season 14) opened with the Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Gibson) setting foot in Wales, immediately after which the former accidentally stepped his foot on a fairy circle comprised of string, charms and notes. Witchcraft ensued, abruptly disappearing the Doctor and leaving Ruby tethered to a mysterious and spooky af old woman who always stood exactly 73 yards away.

“We waited for the technology to catch up. And the technology has broken us.” So Russell T Davies told the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine about series 14, episode five “Dot and Bubble”. Tech breaking people sounds fitting for an episode Davies describes as Doctor Who’s “clearest step into Black Mirror territory.”
Set in a colony on an alien planet, “Dot and Bubble” is the story of Lindy Pepper Bean (Callie Cooke), a citizen of the happy, harmonious and social-media-absorbed world of Finetime. When Lindy’s friends start disappearing and mysterious monsters appear to be in operation, will Ruby and the Doctor be able to convince Finetime’s residents of the truth before it’s too late?
The idea for the episode first came to Davies 15 years ago, he told Dwm’s Benjamin Cook. During an LA lunch ahead of the series 11 launch, he pitched it to Steven Moffat,...

A spoiler-free review of Russell T Davies’ Doctor Who episode, 73 Yards. Still don’t read it if you want to know absolutely nothing.
I’ve got a little out of the habit when it comes to writing spoiler-free reviews of Doctor Who. Back in my Den Of Geek days, I was turning these out weekly. These days? Less so, as I get older, and get even more conscious of not wanting to spoil any of an episode for someone.
Still, I’ve read some of the discourse surrounding this current run of Doctor Who, and thought it might be worth jumping back in for Russell T Davies’ latest penned episode, 73 Yards. He’s made the point in interviews building up to the current series of the show that one of the delights with Doctor Who is it can be something new each and every week. If you thought Ruby Sunday's (Millie Gibson) declaration that one of the situations she and The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) find themselves in for Doctor Who's new season is "so Bridgerton" was the only reference to the Netflix period romp, you would be mistaken. Because Queen Charlotte herself, Golda Rosheuvel, is also among the guest stars for the new season.
Rosheuvel will appear in the first episode of the latest run, playing a character named Jocelyn who collides with our dynamic duo. "It’s been amazing to see the whole world appreciate Golda’s talents, because of Bridgerton, and it’s been an absolute joy to invite her to Cardiff to help launch Ncuti and Millie’s first season," says showrunner Russell T. The Doctor Who simultaneous global premiere arrives in May, and the episode titles for the season have now been revealed.
In addition, another guest star has been added to the cast. In the Julie Anne Robinson directed Space Babies, Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) joins Doctor Who as Jocelyn.
“It’s been amazing to see the whole world appreciate Golda’s talents, because of Bridgerton, and it’s been an absolute joy to invite her to Cardiff to help launch Ncuti and Millie’s first season,” said Russell T Davies, the Doctor Who showrunner.
New episodes will debut weekly across BBC iPlayer, BBC One and outside of the UK on Disney+ (where available), with the Steven Moffat-penned adventure Boom up next, followed by 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble, Rogue, and a two-part finale spread across two weeks, The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death.

No one’s ever really gone when it comes to a timey wimey show like Doctor Who, including past showrunner Steven Moffat, who is back penning a new episode of series 14. We still know very little about his new story except that it’ll be the third episode of the series, will feature Hitchcock-style suspense, and is the second episode directed by Julie Anne Robinson after the series 14 premiere.
And now add a new detail: the episode’s title, which is simply “Boom.” Sounds explosive, indeed.

“No job. No boss. Just fun.” That was the offer the Fifteenth Doctor made to Ruby Sunday in the Doctor Who series 14 trailer. ‘And’, he should probably have added, ‘quite a lot of mortal peril,’ – but when has the Doctor ever been upfront with companions about the not-insignificant dangers of travelling in time and space? He probably doesn’t even fill in a risk assessment.
We else do we know about series 14? The first episode will arrive on BBC One, iPlayer and Disney+ on a Saturday in May 2024, and there will be eight episodes in total followed by a Christmas Day special. Aside from that, verified info about the new series is summarised below (catch up on the valiant work of the @set_dw account for non-official but useful clues). We’ll update it all...

‘Servant’ Star Nell Tiger Free Talks M. Night Shyamalan’s “Mystical Hold” and Her ‘The Omen’ Prequel
[This story contains spoilers for Servant’s season three finale, “Mama.”]
Servant star Nell Tiger Free, much like her character, gained a family throughout the course of filming the M. Night Shyamalan-produced series.
Free, who’s also known for her tragic turns on Game of Thrones and Too Old to Die Young, plays Leanne Grayson, a mysterious young nanny whose presence or power somehow brings the Turner family’s deceased baby back to life. (Or so we think.) But in the process of making a darkly comedic thriller about a highly dysfunctional family, Free formed a family of her own with the likes of Servant writer-director Ishana Night Shyamalan (M. Night’s middle daughter) and co-leads Toby Kebbell, Rupert Grint and Lauren Ambrose.
With the fourth-and-final season premiere releasing Jan. 13th on Apple TV+, Free is now reflecting on the show’s ending and how it compared to her own speculation.

Plot: Following the suspenseful season three finale, season four will bring the final chapter of the Turner story to an epic and emotional conclusion. Leanne’s war with the Church of Lesser Saints heightens, threatening Spruce street, the city of Philadelphia, and beyond. Meanwhile, the shattered Turner family must not only confront the increasing threat of Leanne, but the certain reality that Dorothy is waking up. As the Turner family brownstone continues to crumble, questions are finally answered: who is Leanne Grayson and who is the child in their home?

In Series 13 we bade farewell to Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall, and before the series finished airing the BBC announced Russell T Davies was returning as showrunner and the new Doctor would be Ncuti Gatwa.
And then the explosive Series 13 finale ‘The Power of the Doctor’ threw a big old sonic spanner in the works. When Whittaker regenerated, instead of getting a sneak peek at Gatwa as the new Doctor (as we have with all other modern Doctor Who regenerations), we got the surprise twist of David Tennant returning.
We now know that Tennant will be the official Fourteenth Doctor for the three 60th anniversary episodes, with Gatwa apparently playing Fifteen, the only hint of him so far...

It’s official, Millie Gibson is the new Doctor Who companion who’ll be travelling through space and time with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor in Series 14. The 18-year-old actor is best known for playing the role of series regular Kelly Neelan in ITV soap Coronation Street, and if you want to feel old, was born just one year before the sci-fi show returned to television in 2005. She’ll be playing a character called Ruby Sunday.
The announcement was made live on the BBC’s Children in Need charity fundraising show, after a host of comedy skits and real-life stories, and the ever-brilliant Mel Giedroyc performing a bespoke dance to the Doctor Who theme music (the lyrics are “zonga zonga” now. It’s official.)
As a young soap actor Gibson follows in the footsteps of Jenna Coleman, who got her start in Emmerdale before becoming Clara Oswald and kick-starting a solid dramatic career.

The most recent edition of Doctor Who Magazine reveals that the first block of Series 14 will be directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, a young British screenwriter and director whose first major TV job was on M Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ horror series Servant. Starring Rupert Grint and Lauren Ambrose, that’s the story of a couple who hire a nanny to look after a reborn doll, opening their home to a mysterious force.
Between 2016 and 2019, Holmes Williams released three horror shorts that captured the film world’s attention. The Nightmare on Deskteeth Street is the story of a boot obsessive on a mission to retrieve his favourite pair, Stilts is set in a dystopia where everybody is forced to wear huge metal stilts, and The Devil’s Harmony is about a teenager who forms a Glee Club to wreak revenge on her high school enemies. With a certain clinical Lanthimos-like aestheticism and The Stepford Wives sorting of the character set, London-based filmmaker Dylan Holmes Williams has been super-charged by the genre film fest circuit (prior to Sundance showcase he won the Director award at Fantastic Fest 2019) a cappella and tribalism gives The Devil’s Harmony the parameters to investigate love at first…note. I sat down with the filmmaker at Sundance to discuss his influences, his style and to deconstruct the structure of the award-winning short.

"This is my school. You see me now, don't you?" How do you fight off bullies? How about with singing. The Devil's Harmony is a fantastic, must watch short film made by up-and-coming British filmmaker Dylan Holmes Williams. It recently screened at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Short Film Jury Prize. The dark comedy film is about a bullied teenage girl who leads an a cappella club on a trail of destruction against her high school enemies. It's not just a film about bullying, but also a number of problems that are all too common in society these days - toxic masculinity, revenge, idiocy in school. Patsy Ferran stars as Kiera, with Cassian Bilton, Guy Henry, Ramzan Miah, and Leo Suter as Connor. It's not just the concept, but the quirky structure and feel of the whole short that makes this seriously stand out.
