It’s that time of year when the Christmas/ Holiday/ Winter Solstice/Hanukkah/ Kwanzaa Specials come out. Not all different ones of course, but these days the books try and be inclusive and include all the above. DC have cleverly sidestepped the yearly outrage at using either Christmas or Holidays in the title. Life’s too short. I’ve been enjoying these seasonal specials in one shape or another for many years, going back to the late 70’s. I still have most of them and still read them every year in the run up to Christmas. Digital now means I don’t even have to fight my way into the correct comic storage box too, an annual tradition I’m pleased to let go. The stories are generally light and a bit of fun, but that’s the spirit of the season.

Well this new digital only title nearly passed me by, which would have been a crying shame. Why? Well, I’ve always been a big fan of both DC’s ghost and horror anthology titles, at their peak back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and of DC’s supernatural/ magic/ horror characters. For me, they make a nice change from superheroics, and give creators a chance to show a different side to them. This new title resurrects an old DC title, Ghosts, which ran for 112 issues from 1971 to 1982, a title I still have quite a few issues of, issues that get a run out once a year at Halloween. This new title it seems is going to focus more on one and done stories featuring DC...

So, you might think comic books and graphic novels are all about superheroes and have such a vast background and back-catalogue that it’s almost impossible to jump in and read them. I thought this at one point, many moons ago, unsure of how I’d be able to delve into the world of comics without being completely confused and overwhelmed with these long-existing worlds that had been established and built over decades. Believe me when I say… there’s much more to comics, and I wanted to highlight a number of graphic novels and comic books for those who might be considering getting into the scene but aren’t sure where to begin. Basically… some recommendations for new readers and those who want to check out some stuff without feeling lost, bewildered and agitated by it all.

Secrets of Sinister House takes us back to Red Rain Batman just in time for Halloween.
Fifth weeks are odd beasts in the comics world. They throw off the natural rhythm of comic publishing, with one book every two or four weeks, and end up stacking some months ane leaving others barren. Fortunately, comic companies have found fun and creative ways to deal with them. Like having Bill Sienkiewicz ink a John Romita Jr. drawing of Vampire Batman from Red Rain chasing down a possibly envampired Joker.
Secrets of Sinister House is, like all of DC's seasonal anthology books, 80 pages of short stories, in and out of continuity, with mix and match creative teams that let us get introduced to some new creators and duck back into favorite continuities. Included in this anthology are:

So, there’s a world where all of the superheroes get their powers from food. It’s not actually weirder than any other superhero universe, to my mind, but it’s definitely weird in a different direction. I like that, since superheroes tend to be all too much of the same thing all the time, but I know mine is a minority taste in the vast land of ComicShopia.
(Oh, and I’m sure a lot of people — maybe even the creators — would object vociferously to my characterizing bizarre and impossible food-related abilities as “superpowers.” Those people are wrong, and probably too uptight, as well.)
Anyway, there are “food weirdos,” as one character calls them. They have long, silly, Latinate terms to explain what it is they can do, which are often dangerous or violent and are also, of course, silly. John Layman and Rob Guillory told a long, funny comics story in that world,...

Oh, look — another comics series I’m still poking my way through, a year or so after it ended! There are ten volumes of the collected Chew, so I’m three or four years behind at this point. I don’t see any particular reason to be concerned about this — not reading a book right when it comes out doesn’t harm anything, or cause a single problem — but I do seem to be doing a lot of it lately.
Anyway: Chew, Vol. 6: Space Cakes . Right smack-dab in the middle of the weird alternate-world detective story by John Layman (words) and Rob Guillory (pictures). See my reviews of volumes one and two and three-through-five (during one of my periodic reviewing bankruptcies) if you care; don’t if you don’t.

Judge Dredd will be battling aliens and Predators in a new Dark Horse crossover comic book miniseries called Predator vs Judge Dredd vs Aliens. The comic was announced by writer John Layman (Chew) at Emerald City Comic Con, and the story centers on Judges Dredd and Anderson “on the hunt for a rogue genetic scientist who has gotten his hands on a Xenomorph skull in the hopes of creating his own breed of the deadliest creature in the galaxy.” Of course the Predator comes along to hunt down the Judges and Xenomorph because as you know, the Predator loves a good challenge.
Layman talked about his upcoming project in an interview with io9 and gives a little set up of how Predator vs Judge Dredd vs Aliens begins:
“One of the things I love about Dredd is the sheer kookiness of the world, so I’m embracing it in a big way.

Not content with joining the Marvel TV universe via his role on upcoming Netflix series Jessica Jones, David Tennant is taking on another comic book-based role, albeit one a little more obscure. He’s taking on one of the main roles in animated adventure Chew, adapted from the Image Comics title. He joins geek icon (and Supernatural recurring veteran) Felicia Day and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun in the story, adapted from the comic by original writer John Layman, who created the title with artist Rob Guillory. Jeff Krelitz is directing and co-producing the movie. Chew is set in a world where bird meats such as chicken and turkey have been outlawed (Nand-noooooo!) following a bird flu outbreak that killed millions of Americans. Yeun voices a detective who is a “cibopath”, meaning he receives psychic impressions from whatever he eats. He’s in a relationship with a food writer...

David Tennant has joined the cast of the animated film Chew, which is based on the comic book of the same name.
The former Doctor Who star will take over the role originally held by the late Robin Williams.
The animated feature also stars Felicia Day (The Guild) and The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun.
Jeff Krelitz, whose previous credits include Torchwood: Web of Lies and Peter Panzerfaust, will direct the film, while the script has been penned by Chew co-creator John Layman.

Tennant will voice Mason Savoy, the detective's mentor-turned-villain, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The rest of the cast recorded their parts last year, but production was halted after the death of Robin Williams last August.

David Tennant – who recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Zebediah “Purple Man” Killgrave in Jessica Jones – has just jumped aboard another comic book adaptation. According to THR, the former Doctor Who star will lend his voice to the upcoming animated adaptation of Image Comics’ Chew.
Tennant’s role – of mentor-turned-villain Mason Savoy – was originally going to be filled by Robin Williams, who tragically committed suicide last summer. His death caused a stall in production, but now things are moving forward once more. The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun and The Guild actress/creator Felicia Day are already signed on for the film and recorded their parts last year.
Chew, created by John Layman (who penned the screenplay for the adaptation) and artist Rob Guillory, centers on an agent in the Food and Drug Administration named Tony Chu (Yeun), who solves crimes by receiving psychic impressions from whatever he eats.

Some things just go together well. Peanut butter and chocolate. Fries and ketchup. Salt n Pepa. John Layman’s Chew, the hit comic about an Fda detective with food-related superpowers, and Revival, Tom Seely’s gothic noir comic set in a town where the recently dead “revived”, seems like a great match. Both are about cops working in topsy-turvy worlds, both either flirt with black humor or let black humor take them to the back seat of its Dodge. But tonally, style-wise, the two comics can seem at odds. So how do you do a crossover twixt the two that doesn’t come out like a strange melange of two opposing styles? Well…you cheat. Or at least get creative with it.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that two performers familiar to fans of genre fiction -- Steven Yeun and Felicia Day -- are on board to voice lead characters Tony Chu and Amelia Mintz, respectively. Doop’s creators, Peter Milligan and Mike Allred will be writing and drawing the covers while David Lafuente will be the interior artist. All-New Doop #1 is out this April.
