Netflix’s sci-fi thriller Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez, Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, and Mark Strong, was released on May 24, 2024, and while it seemed like Netflix was going to have an action-packed hit in its library, the first reactions aren’t that great. The movie has been out for just a couple of hours now, and the critics had their say on the movie; from what we can infer from the initial reactions, the movie is actually – horrible! Based on several reviews, the movie has been declared Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes, as critics pan the movie. The initial audience reactions have yet to come in.
The movie was initially announced back in 2022, with principal photography beginning on August 26, 2022; the shooting ended in November 2022. Atlas is directed by Brad Peyton from a script by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite.

Makoto Shinkai has been called the new Hayao Miyazaki from the moment he arrived on the scene -- and not entirely without reason. The filmmaker has made some of the most successful anime movies of all time, employing stunning visuals that bring tear-jerking stories to life. Like Miyazaki, Shinkai blends traditional Japanese folklore with modern stories to tell fantastical yet intimate coming-of-age stories.
Shinkai's latest, "Suzume," is a movie he's been slowly building his whole career up to. This serves as the end of his unofficial natural disaster trilogy that started with "Your Name," this time directly tackling the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in the plot. In "Suzume," we follow the titular character, a young woman living in a small town in Japan who is tasked with closing a series of magical turns across the country before it falls into another disaster. Along the way, Suzume and her companion (who...

It's reductive to proclaim Makoto Shinkai "the new Hayao Miyazaki," but the comparison isn't entirely unwarranted. Like the Studio Ghibli maestro, the Japanese filmmaker has come to garner critical acclaim and box office success on a global scale thanks to films like "Your Name" and his latest movie, "Suzume." In a departure from Shinkai's previous work, "Suzume" even incorporates some Ghibli-esque flourishes, including a mystical talking cat and a handsome male lead who's transformed into a small three-legged stool for much of the runtime (not to mention the film's deliberate Ghibli Easter eggs). Generally speaking, however, the only thing that Shinkai and Miyazaki's animated films really have in common is how distinctly Japanese they are.
Take "Suzume," a film that's all about Japan's seismic activity and the mythology that has sprung up around it. It also deliberately invokes the destructive earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tōhoku region of Japan...

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” is a sumptuous feast for the eyes according to film critics who just saw the film. The movie, detailing the life of the Emperor Napoleon (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and his relationship as both a ruler and a husband to Empress Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) is “a lot of movie” according to critic and writer William Bibbiani.
The film will premiere in a truncated two hour and 38 minute cut in theaters, while debuting a four-hour cut on Apple TV+.
Many critics cited the biggest flaw was that it felt like the time had been condensed. According to IndieWire’s David Ehrlich, “Napoleon definitely feels like a 4-hour movie that’s been cut to ribbons, but it’s So funny during the first half when it’s all about Ridley Scott just reading Napoleon for filth and laughing at how embarrassing it is to be a man with ambitions.

Ridley Scott has proven himself a master of the historical epic, with many fans eagerly awaiting the release of Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby. The film recently had its world premiere in Paris, and the first reactions to Napoleon have begun to emerge. We’ll update with more Napoleon reactions as they roll out.
Napoleon is a triumph that sees Ridley Scott at his best. The action set pieces are unforgiving and both Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby disappear into their roles. The film is always at its peak when they're on screen together.

Ridley Scott prints the legend in #Napoleon/ #NapoleonMovie & it absolutely rips. A compelling love story between a man & his country, military career, wife & ego. Battle sequences are visceral, gory & gorgeously expansive in scale & scope. Phoenix is great, but Kirby transcends.

How grisly is “Saw X”? The 10th film in the horror franchise — in which people are trapped in elaborate torture traps that often require them to lose body parts to survive — was so disturbing to neighbors of film editor Steve Forn that they called police to report “someone being tortured to death,” director Kevin Greutert said.
As Greutert, who has directed three films in the series and edited seven, told NME, Forn was editing a scene involving a gruesome “eye vacuum trap,” in which a character will lose both eyes if they don’t win the game devised by the villain, Jigsaw.
A doorbell camera captured the police knocking on the door of Forn’s North Hollywood apartment to tell him, “The neighbors [have been] calling and saying someone’s being tortured to death in here,” the director related. “And [Forn] was like, ‘Actually, I’m just working on a movie… You can...

Kenneth Branagh is back once again as Detective Hercule Poirot in a brand new Agatha Christie adaptation. "A Haunting in Venice" is the third interpretation of Christie's work by Branagh in the past several years, with the actor and director taking on a lesser-known book by the author for a more overtly horror-driven tale. With a stacked A-list cast that includes the likes of Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, and Michelle Yeoh, this is one of the most star-studded films of the fall season.
Following 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" and 2022's "Death on the Nile," this latest Poirot mystery is set in post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve. Now retired and living in exile in the one of world's most glamorous cities, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a haunted palazzo. After five years lying in wait, "The Nun" franchise is emerging from the shadows this weekend to scare moviegoers once again. "The Nun II" makes its theatrical debut this week, but some critics already got the chance to see the movie that marks a ccomeback for one of the Conjuring Universe's most prominent ghouls. Valak, the sinister demon played by Bonnie Aarons in "The Nun" films and "The Conjuring 2," is set to make a harrowing return in the new movie, which picks up the story of heroic nun Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and her probably-possessed bestie Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) four years after the original film's ending. Franchise newbie Storm Reid ("The Last Of Us") joins the cast of the sequel alongside "Chronicles of Narnia" alum Anna Popplewell.

As adults, we know that not everyone can be trusted. However, little kids, like Peter in the 2023 Lionsgate horror flick "Cobweb," should be able to trust their parents. Is the knocking sound young Peter hears in his bedroom real or in his imagination, as his mom keep telling him? Or are they perhaps lying to him and hiding a dangerous and terrifying secret? There's a line in the horror film "Silent Hill" that says, "Mother is God in the eyes of a child," so who can a child trust if they can't trust their parents?
The psychological thriller "Cobweb" comes to us from first-time feature director Samuel Bodin and writer Chris Thomas Devlin ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), and /Film's own William Bibbiani called it "one of the best horror movies of the year." You didn't know? You didn't see a poster or commercial anywhere for the film? That might be because...

John Carpenter may not be a real-life carpenter, but he sure has built himself a legacy. It's just one made of movies, not wooden sticks.
Seriously though, any genre movie fan will probably tell you that John Carpenter has made a staggering number of classic motion pictures. "Halloween" may not have invented the slasher genre, but it defined it. "The Thing" may not have invented gory monster effects, but it raised the bar and few films have even nudged it in the decades that followed. "Big Trouble in Little China" is one of the most subversive films of the 1980s, tearing down the whole "badass" genre of cinema by placing a musclebound white American hero in the center stage and then revealing him to be nothing more than a comic relief sidekick in a story about Chinese mythology that he's too damned ignorant to comprehend. And We could go on.

One would be forgiven for not realizing it, but a horror movie starring Lizzy Caplan and Anthony Starr was released in theaters three weeks ago just as the Barbenheimer craze was getting underway. Sure, it would be easy to blame the wild success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" for burying this movie but, quite frankly, it seems like Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, must shoulder some of that blame as well. Not only did the studio do very little to build any awareness for the film but, as it arrived on VOD over the weekend, the domestic box office grosses were never reported.
For people who don't follow this stuff regularly, it is truly rare for a theatrical release of any kind from a well-known studio to not have its box office numbers reported at all. Even movies that make very little will have those numbers reflected on sites like...

The "Fast & Furious" franchise has taken quite the ride, growing from a modest "Point Break" riff to globe-trotting espionage, borderline superhero movies (with cars). Along the way, it left the laws of physics in the dust. There are currently 11 "Fast & Furious," the 10 mainline films plus the spin-off "Hobbs & Shaw" — or are there?
Director Justin Lin (who directed five of these eleven films) made himself a household name with 2002's "Better Luck Tomorrow." Wes Craven's 1996 slasher film "Scream" was an effective horror movie, but gained a great deal of cultural and critical traction for its metaphysical commentary. The characters in "Scream" were old enough to have been raised on the slasher movies of the 1970s and 1980s, making them able to recognize when they were themselves enmeshed in a slasher movie-like scenario. When the killers are eventually revealed, they admit to being inspired by their favorite horror movies. "Movies don't create killers," they say, "movies make killers creative."
Although "Scream" could have easily been the final slasher movie ever made -- it effectively deconstructed the genre once and for all -- it was a massive hit, leading to no small number of imitators and a long string of sequels that have become just as weary as the Roman-numeraled '80s slashers the 1996 original was lampooning. When J.J. Abrams' feature film "Star Trek" was released in theaters in 2009, there seemed to be a clear creative mandate at work. "Star Trek" was set prior to the events of the 1966 TV series on which it was based, telling an alternate timeline version of how the well-known "Trek" characters all first met. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the rest of the crew were all depicted as younger, hotter versions of themselves, each one more youthful and impulsive than their adult counterparts from 1966.
Given the hot-headedness of the Enterprise crew and the entire 2009 film's "action-packed" vibe, the mandate mentioned above seems to have demanded the filmmakers kick everything into Overdrive. It's as if they wanted critics to respond with the phrase, "This ain't your grandpa's 'Star Trek.'"

"Creed III" is the first film in the, er, "Rocky Expanded Universe" to cast the Italian Stallion's narrative arc aside. It's a wise decision because there's nowhere else to go with Balboa. Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed can't keep fighting the spawn of Rocky's former foes; "Creed II" stretched this to the breaking point with Adonis facing the son of Ivan Drago, and Sylvester Stallone would've probably kept heading down this derivative route. Rocky Balboa had outlived his purpose in "Rocky."
Liberated from Stallone's purview, "Creed III" is a breath of fresh pugilistic air. Following in the footsteps of his on-screen mentor, Jordan has seized the directorial reins, and turned in a juicy, fistic melodrama that harkens back to the likes of Robert Wise's "Somebody Up There Likes Me." Tonally, at least. Visually, Jordan has imbued his film with a certain fury that is clearly influenced by anime.

When I was about seven or so, I attended a baton competition in Orlando, Florida that granted all of the attendees a day pass to Universal Studios. The park had recently opened the "Terminator 2: 3D: Battle Across Time" attraction, which meant the park was covered in advertisements with spine-chilling imagery of the T-1000 staring into my soul, and a handful of prominently displayed, life-size Terminators that I assume were added solely to scar me for life. We had to pass by the attraction to get to another side of the park, and I just stood frozen in my tracks. I had seen both "The Terminator" and "T2: Judgment Day" at this point, but seeing a Terminator right before my eyes immediately destroyed the safe distance provided by the movies. The damn thing looked way too real for comfort, and I totally freaked out.

As Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN" continues to slay audiences at the box office, fans of the killer doll movie have compared it to the horror genre's most notorious deadly toy (and slasher icon) Chucky, who has been tiptoe-ing into our collective nightmares since the first "Child's Play" movie in 1988. Other than Chucky's lack of song-and-dance skills, the major difference between him and the blonde artificial intelligence prototype is that she is the product of tech advancement gone awry, whereas the Good Guy doll's origins lie in supernatural soul-swapping (and perhaps more). It wasn't always that way, though. In fact, Don Mancini's initial story had no killer's soul to swap at all.
In Jake Rossen's oral history of the film for Mental Floss, both director Tom Holland ("Fright Night") and writer Mancini confirm that the original story utilized the doll not as a host for a killer's rotten soul but,...

This article contains major spoilers for "M3GAN" and "Child's Play."
Ever since "The Twilight Zone" introduced the world to Talky Tina, the killer toy has become one of horror's most reliable antagonists. Out of the woodwork came slasher villains like Annabelle ("The Conjuring"), Billy ("Dead Silence"), and Blade ("Puppet Master"), but as of this moment, the world has been rightfully overtaken by "M3GAN" fever. Her incredible dance skills, coupled with her mischievous personality, have propelled the sassy murderer to a prominent spot among the killer doll hall of fame. M3GAN slays in every sense of the word.
It got me thinking of what movie would pair the best with "M3GAN" for a thematic double bill. /Film's William Bibbiani made a compelling argument for Wes Craven's "Deadly Friend," which would definitely make a fun companion piece. But for this double feature, I have a more recognizable title in mind. The...

The ten best films of 2022, in five double features:
10. “Benediction” and 9. “Bros”
How does one become a fully integrated member of society — an artist, a lover, a participant in the marketplace of ideas — when that society constantly rejects your very presence and participation? Two of this year’s best took very different looks at gay creatives looking for love and fulfillment, about a century apart; “Benediction,” Terence Davies’ haunting biopic of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden) takes a much different path than the raucous rom-com starring and co-written by Billy Eichner, but both films followed men seeking their heart’s desire in a world that judges that desire. (The exceptional LGBTQ films “Fire Island” and “The Inspection” fit this category as well.)
8. “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” and 7. “Women Talking”

Early viewers of “Avatar: The Way of Water” are just about unanimous in their emphatic praise of the James Cameron epic.
The film, which debuts in theaters this Friday, is already being lauded as one of the best films of the year and a vast improvement to its 2009 predecessor.
“Avatar: The Way of Water is miles better than the first,” said writer Eric Vespe in a tweet. “The ocean environment is incredible and Cameron clearly is wearing his environmentalist heart on his sleeve here. I connected to this one in a way I couldn’t with the original.”

The reviews are in for Marvel’s “Morbius” starring Jared Leto, and they’re out for blood.
As the social media and review embargo lifted on Wednesday evening for the film, critics took to Twitter to elaborate on what some are calling the “worst Marvel superhero movie in a long, long time.”
“Morbius is a reminder of what many comic book movies were before the MCU: sloppy, poorly executed, and sure to disappoint fans of the comics,” critic Dan Murrell tweeted. “It also contains the worst attempt at universe building in the modern era. Full review later tonight but… it’s bad.”

On Tuesday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced that it would cut eight categories from the live portion of this year’s Oscars broadcast, apparently in an attempt to shorten the broadcast length.
While it remains to be seen how rank and file normies will react once the show airs, the overwhelming response from within the industry and from invested fans was fairly intense outrage over what many critics said was an insult to the people in the affected categories.
“Wow f— this,” actor Dylan O’Brien tweeted, just for one example.
The affected categories, just for reference, are: Documentary (Short Subject), Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Production Design, Short Film (Animated), Short Film (Live Action), and Sound. They’ll be presented in a more sparsely attended ceremony just before the broadcast, with shortened, edited footage edited into the live broadcast in some way.

“10 Cloverfield Lane” director Dan Trachtenberg will direct the fifth installment of the “Predator” franchise for 20th Century Studios, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Patrick Aison, whose writing credits include “Kingdom,” “Jack Ryan” and “Treadstone,” will write the script. Plot details about the extraterrestrial hunters’ fifth outing are being kept under wraps.
Trachtenberg’s upcoming installment will not tie into the last film in the franchise, 2018’s “The Predator.” That film was directed by Shane Black, who starred in the very first “Predator” movie in 1987 as one of the victims.
The 2018 film cost $80 million to make and grossed $160 million at the box office. “The Predator” starred Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Augusto Aguilera and Yvone Strahovski.

Netflix dropped their latest blockbuster original today – Project Power, a superhero action movie with some significant Marvel and DC pedigree behind it. Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) star and The Batman‘s Mattson Tomlin penned the script. With comic book films not hitting theaters this summer as they should’ve done, there was a lot of hype for this one in the build-up to its release.
Now that it’s arrived, as of this Friday morning, the internet seems to be digging it quite a bit. It’s going down a treat with most viewers who love the high-concept premise and its fresh take on a crowded genre. Not all are pleased, as others feel it doesn’t live up to its potential, but the general consensus is that it’s another winner for Netflix.

Elisabeth Moss’ new horror film, a reboot of The Invisible Man, has been met with overall praise ahead of its Friday release date.
The Invisible Man follows Moss’ character Cecilia as she escapes from an abusive relationship and then finds out that her ex has died by suicide — or has he? When Cecilia begins noticing an unsettling presence around her, it’s soon clear that he is not dead but has found a way to make himself invisible.
“This is the expertly told, horrifying story of an abusive relationship filtered through the lens of a classic horror movie monster,” William Bibbiani wrote for The Wrap.

Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep,” the film adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to “The Shining,” is a “tremendous achievement” and a “worthy successor to ‘The Shining,'” critics say.

‘Doctor Sleep’ is a stunning and frightening film about trauma and substance abuse, it’s a worthy successor to ‘The Shining,'” added Bloody Disgusting’s William Bibbiani. Overall, critics seem to agree that the beginning is a slow burn, but the third act makes it worthwhile.

Pennywise the Clown is a horror monster like no other.
Similar to the Boggart of Harry Potter, or Room 101 from the George Orwell classic 1984, the character’s a manifestation of your greatest fear(s), be it werewolves or giant, pregnant spiders. And in a few weeks, he – or, rather, It – will creep back into theaters once again for It: Chapter Two.
It’s looking like it’ll be one of the most successful horror films ever as well, far exceeding the box office haul of the first part – for the record, Chapter One did about $700 million worldwide. And to ensure that hype is as high as can be, Warner Bros. and New Line have now allowed for the social media reactions to go live. Unfortunately, though, they’re not terribly positive, with one person even calling it the “biggest disappointment of the year.” Ouch!

Critics are roaring in disagreement over Disney’s live-action remake of “The Lion King,” with some saying it’s a “visually stunning” treat and others slamming it as little more than a “deepfake” and that fans should’ve just stuck with the original.
“Unfolding like the world’s longest and least convincing deepfake, Jon Favreau’s (almost) photorealistic remake of ‘The Lion King’ is meant to represent the next step in Disney’s circle of life,” Indiewire‘s David Ehlrich opens his review. “Instead, this soulless chimera of a film comes off as little more than a glorified tech demo from a greedy conglomerate — a well-rendered but creatively bankrupt self-portrait of a movie studio eating its own tail.”
Yet on the other end of the spectrum, Uproxx‘s Mike Ryan says, “There’s a scene featuring a dung beetle pushing a ball of giraffe s— across the desert, and I was mesmerized.

The backlash after the first few trailers and teases for Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin” were loud and clear, with audiences perplexed at the look 0f Will Smith’s blue, CGI Genie.
But while some critics in their first reviews of the film say “Aladdin” was as disappointing and unnecessary a remake as feared, others were quick to say that any concerns about Smith were wildly overblown.

The candy-colored costumes and production design are stunning, Alan Menken’s songs are as infectious as ever, the dance numbers have an electric Bollywood flair, and some of the bazaar chase sequences have a ‘Young Indiana Jones’ sense of rollicking,...

The new R-rated reboot of “Hellboy” from Lionsgate and starring David Harbour is a bloodier, more violent take on Mike Mignola’s comic book character than Guillermo del Toro’s original films, and many critics haven’t been shy in savaging it.
Early reviews of director Neil Marshall’s “Hellboy” are largely negative, with critics saying that the new film pales in comparison to the fantasy whimsy of del Toro’s version. At least one critic was willing to say that the film is an early contender for the worst film of the year, while another went as far as to call it one of the worst comic book movies ever made.
“In a word, ‘Hellboy’ is unpleasant. Other appropriate adjectives to describe this reboot include dreadful, obnoxious, unnecessary and interminable,” /Film’s Josh Spiegel wrote in his review. “Considering the shadow cast by the two ‘Hellboy’ films written and directed by Guillermo del Toro,...

Hellboy the comic-book character was born of an unholy union of woman and demon. But the latest “Hellboy” movie was born of clashes between director Neil Marshall and two of the film’s 16 producers.
Insiders on the film told TheWrap about a series of disagreements that boiled over when the producers decided to replace Marshall’s go-to cinematographer, Sam McCurdy. Other spats involved rehearsals, star David Harbour and the design of a tree, insiders said.
Two people familiar with the situation said McCurdy was fired simply for doing what Marshall asked him to do, and that producers Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin were trying to send a message to Marshall that despite being the film’s director, Marshall was not in charge.
An attorney for Levin said that was not the case. “While my client will not comment on why Sam McCurdy was fired as that is a private matter,...

In November at our inaugural Power Women Summit, TheWrap committed to bringing gender balance to our team of film critics.
At the time, I said that we wanted to make sure we walked the walk and set an example by our own actions. We all know that having different a diverse set of views among writers creates a smarter, richer context for the discussion around our popular culture. (More info on that event here.)
For that reason I’m pleased to announce that we have achieved that commitment, and that TheWrap now has an equal number of women as men critics.

Reviews are in for Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic, and it’s not all awards-season buzz.
Despite garnering six nominations for this year’s Golden Globes, McKay’s kitschy approach to the politically charged film has polarized reviewers, prompting a mix of scathing critiques and celebratory praise for the director’s distinct film style.
What critics can agree on, however, is actor Christian Bale’s performance as the film’s central political character. In his review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman praised Bale’s descent into political madness, calling the performance a “virtuoso” impersonation of a politician “who has no problem stomping on the Constitution.”
“Bale, thanks to a stupendous job of prosthetic enhancement, disappears inside Cheney’s doughy armchair-warrior physique and deceptively innocuous balding head, but a puckish aura of Bale obsession shines through; he channels everything about Cheney that, in the Bush era, made him such a recessive and,...

Reviews for James Wan’s “Aquaman” are finally in — and critics seem to argue that while the movie is a spectacle and “a massive adventure,” it has some flaws.
“Plot-wise, the result is a hot, foamy mess, my friends, but a mess that washed over me like a tidal wave, a mess so wild and candy-colored and eager to have a bitchin’ time that it’s some of the most fun I’ve had at a theater this year,” said Collider’s Vinnie Mancuso.
Comic Book’s Brandon Davis added, “each of ‘Aquaman’s’ flaws, are complimented [sic] by brilliant action-sequences, stylish swagger, and an epic, massive adventure, like the character himself.”

Early reviews of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” say its one of the best animated films of the year, if not the best, and that it rivals “Black Panther” and “Wonder Woman” in the top tier of recent superhero tales.
As of this writing, there are 30 early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. All of them are positive, giving the film a 100 percent score on the Tomatometer. TheWrap’s William Bibbiani hailed the film as among the “best superhero storytelling on the market,” and praised the new Spidey on the block, Miles Morales.
“Miles Morales is an incredibly captivating new hero, in a story that challenges him in every conceivable way. His powers force upon him an awkward physicality that robs him of his previous confidence,” Bibbiani writes.

If you weren’t already excited about Sony Pictures’ animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, maybe these reactions and reviews will get you excited! Audiences and critics are loving this movie, and it sounds like it could be the best Spider-Man film made to date!
Everyone seems to love it! It currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and I can’t wait to see it for myself! I’m actually kind of bummed out that I didn’t get invited to the press screening, especially after reading all of these reactions.
Below you’ll find a collection of tweets and excerpts from reviews for you to read through:
#SpiderVerse is hands down the best animated movie of the year, possibly even the best superhero movie of the year, which is not an accolade I give lightly with Infinity War in the running. It's So stylish and So beautiful and So funny.
