Admit it – there’s at least one horror movie out there with a “gotcha” moment that made your heart slam against the inside of your ribcage. A sudden out-of-nowhere reveal, often accompanied by a loud noise on the soundtrack. Scenes like this have been making audiences soil their seats since the era of classic monster movies, and it’s not hard to see why. The response is hardwired into our brains; an instinctive fight-or-flight reflex when our natural defense mechanisms are rudely interrupted. The term “jump scare” wasn’t commonly used to label this effect until the 21st century, and it only really became part of popular culture after the birth of YouTube – which practically weaponized the technique with viral “screamer” videos and clip compilations.

Fifty-one years ago, director Tobe Hooper and his cast and crew spent a blisteringly hot Texas summer working to bring us one of the greatest horror films ever made, the 1974 classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (watch it Here)… and to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the film, legendary drive-in critic and movie host Joe Bob Briggs is writing a book about the making of it!
During an interview on the Mistress Harley podcast (note: that link is for adults only), Joe Bob revealed, “I have just signed a contract with Dark Horse, which is mostly known for their comics, but they also do books. (With Dark Horse) I’m gonna do two books: we’re gonna reprint Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In, which is my original reviews … and then we’re gonna do a 50th anniversary book that’s the entire back story of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Usually on Test of Time we are looking at heavy hitter franchises or big-ticket movies from the biggest of big-name horror directors. If we looked at Carpenter, we could look at things like The Thing or Escape From New York and ask the stupidest question in the world, like if they stand the test of time and what their influences would be. For Hooper, you could give Texas Chainsaw 2 a whirl or see if Lifeforce makes any more damn sense now than it did when it came out. The answers to these and many more questions in a Mount Rushmore horror creators list of credits would be yes, yes, they are quite good. Next Question. So really, when you are playing with the big boys you have to go a little deeper, look at the lesser known and often less discussed movies in their bag of goodies. Today we...

The question of how to get the most authenticity possible out of actors has been riling up filmmakers for as long as the film medium has existed. William Wyler ("Ben-Hur") did 40 takes; Robert Bresson ("Pickpocket") insisted on simple movements and monotone line deliveries; Italian Neorealists cast people off the street; Robert Altman ("Nashville") let actors improvise; Andrei Tarkovsky ("Solaris") kept them in the dark about how the story would end.
When it comes to horror, the quest becomes even more daunting: How do you convince viewers that the people they're seeing on screen are genuinely disturbed and terrified, while also securing enough distance between actors and characters to keep the shoot sustainable? Some films have attempted to split the difference by instilling genuine scares, discomfort, and emotional distress on their actors. Others assembled their respective violent scenarios to within an inch of their lives, placing performers into circumstances that were...

Allow us to jog your memory as to how much of a scary good time these killer alligator/crocodile flicks can be. From the hilariously campy to the horrifyingly credible, here are our Top 10 Favorite Killer Alligator/Crocodile Movies!
#10. Crocodile (2000) – Just a few weeks back we boldly stood up for what Tobe Hooper’s unabashedly trashy direct-to-video Crocodile – a movie that, while among the lower rungs of his illustrious filmography, is actually much more gory, violent and overall fun than people give it credit for. While cheaply made and poorly acted, the great thing about this flick is the sheer amount of killer-croc-action and exorbitant death toll as the prehistoric beast named Flat Dog chews, chomps, marauds and masticates every damn annoying human in its predatory path. A fall from grace in the eyes of many, Crocodile is minor-key Hooper having a damn good time! Get Here

If you’re a fan of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it Here), there’s a good chance you might have heard about South Texas Blues at some point over the last couple decades. Christopher Garetano has been dreaming of making a narrative feature (or limited series) about the making of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for a long time, and wrote the first draft of that project – titled South Texas Blues – back in 2006. As he has worked to bring the idea to the screen, he has also had sections of the script illustrated and published in the pages of Fangoria magazine and had plans to turn it into a three-part graphic novel, but only the first part of that adaptation was ever published. Now the script for South Texas Blues has been published in its entirety and copies of the book can be purchased at This Link!

While it may feel a little blasphemous to admit, sometimes the book just isn’t better than the movie. And that’s really okay. Both authors and directors tell stories using the tools they have available in their medium. A perfectly turned phrase can be just as emotional as a beautifully framed shot in the right hands, and sometimes a filmmaker’s choices perfectly align with the author’s sensibility, bringing fan fave characters to vivid life.
However, the best movie adaptations can often transform the source material into a nearly unrecognizable vision. When this happens, it may still authentically express the original soul of a novel—or at least a soul of its own. Writing is a lonely job, but film is all about collaboration, and when it goes well, well, audiences are treated to something truly special.

Bloody Disgusting is celebrating the 76th birthday of horror legend Robert Englund on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, and in fact, the party has already begun over on Screambox!
The Bloody Disgusting-powered horror streaming service just added Three classic Robert Englund films to the lineup, and that’s only the beginning of our epic celebration.
Over on Screambox, beginning today, you can now stream A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), plus Tobe Hooper movies Night Terrors (1993) and The Mangler (1995)!
Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street is of course the original horror classic that introduced audiences to Freddy Krueger, the dream demon that Robert Englund became a household name through playing across multiple films. Night Terrors, almost a full decade later, saw Englund playing the Marquis de Sade for director Tobe Hooper, while Hooper’s The Mangler brought Englund into the world of Stephen King. It may be apocryphal, but apparently when he attended a cinema club screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, then director of the BBFC James Ferman said something along the lines of “It’s all right for you middle-class cineastes to see this film, but what would happen if a factory worker in Manchester happened to see it?” This snobbery, and Ferman’s insistence that it wasn’t any one image that kept him from granting the film an X (later 18) certificate but ‘an atmosphere of madness, threat and impeding violence’ kept The Texas Chain Saw Massacre from the eyes of the great unwashed until Ferman’s retirement in 1999.

Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror film "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," just by its very aesthetic, is one of the grimier, more disgusting movies ever made. Shot on 16mm film, every frame looks stressed and overexposed, as if the film stock itself had been stored in a slaughterhouse. It's a film that looks like it was made by the killers who live inside of it.
The mythology of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" is well-known to all horror aficionados, and has inspired a massive subgenre of feckless city dopes who get lost in the impoverished backwoods of America only to be slaughtered by the mutated locals. The film stands as a commentary on the great forgotten swaths of the United States, shoved aside by economic hardship and a lack of resources. In most cases, the forgotten people turn to cannibalism to survive. The poor feed on the well-to-do.

Gothic castles and faraway cabins are classic genre fare, but there’s something to be said for scary movies that tell stories about claustrophobic urban environments and the horrors of being isolated despite being surrounded by densely packed neighbors. Not only are these stories more relatable for big-city folks like myself, but they’re also uniquely positioned to deliver down-to-earth scares with a social twist.
And in honor of Evil Dead Rise brilliantly relocating the action to an LA apartment building, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best Apartment Horror movies. After all, there’s nothing scarier than finding yourself trapped in a high rise with nowhere to go but down!
In the interest of keeping the list varied, we’ll be leaving out a few obvious entries like Candyman and Rosemary’s Baby, as I think we can assume that most of our readers have already seen these.

There's no better time to visit the original "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" House than now. The building, which has shifted locations and owners throughout the decades, has undergone a makeover to honor the landmark film in a more public manner. Formerly known as the Grand Central Cafe, the restaurant came under new ownership in November 2022 and is now known as Hooper's, a loving reference to "Texas Chain Saw" director Tobe Hooper.
The Victorian-style house in the original film was originally located in Round Rock, Texas, outside of Austin. The farmhouse property was suitably rural and rickety at the time of the "Texas Chain Saw" shoot in the summer of 1973, but since then the town has developed into a suburb that serves the greater Austin metro area and the site of the house is now a giant development project. Luckily, the house never faced demolition and instead moved to nearby...

We have a very eclectic mix of Blu-rays for you in this latest Blu-ray column. In fact, I can't remember a time when I've rounded up such an odd assortment of films. Not only do we have the new 4K release of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but we also have the animated "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," the beautiful drama "The Remains of the Day," and Dario Argento's "Phenomena" just to cap things off. Like I said: eclectic.

To Taylor Swift, Guillermo del Toro is the real “Mastermind.”
The multi-hyphenate Grammy darling raved about the “Shape of Water” Oscar-winning filmmaker during The Hollywood Reporter’s 2022 Women in Entertainment Power 100 Q&a, revealing she would want to trade places with del Toro for a day.
“Imagine having that imagination, that visual vocabulary and that astonishing body of work,” Swift said. “To have such a diverse storytelling range but somehow put your distinctive artistic fingerprint on every film.”
The “Cats” actress most recently appeared in David O. Russell’s “Amsterdam,” while del Toro’s stop-motion reimagining of “Pinocchio” is now streaming on Netflix. Swift also made her directorial debut this year with the Oscar-qualifying short film “All Too Well.”

The house from director Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it Here) – which was moved from the filming location in the ’90s and turned into the Grand Central Cafe and Club Car Bar, which sits on the grounds of the Antlers Hotel in Kingsland, Texas – was recently purchased by new owners. During an interview with Daily Trib, the new owners promised they would “preserve and protect the history and integrity” of both the Grand Central Cafe and the Antlers Hotel. On the cafe’s Facebook page, they even said they would be “going deeper into the world of Mr. Hooper.” And they have quickly proven their dedication to honoring the house’s history. They’ve even gone so far as to rename the restaurant in the house Hooper’s!

Located in Kingsland, Texas, the Leatherface house from Tobe Hooper‘s original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has played host to the Grand Central Café restaurant for the last several years, but new owners have moved in and some changes are taking place. The good news? Those new owners will be honoring, preserving, and restoring the location’s iconic legacy.
For starters, the Grand Central Café – a restaurant that is literally inside the horror movie house – is being renamed Hooper’s in honor of Tobe Hooper, who passed away back in 2017.
The new owners wrote in an update on Facebook last month, “We are currently very deep into restoring the house, but we have kept the bar open in an effort to employ existing staff. A bright, benevolent light went out on December 4, 2022, when Bob McGrath passed away at the age of 90. For 47 years, he maintained a residence as Bob Johnson on "Sesame Street," where, at an amazing 130-episode-per-season clip (until 1998), he taught children the joy of music. Whenever Bob dropped by Gordon and Susan Robinson's apartment, or popped his head into Mr. Hooper's shop, you knew a sing-a-long was imminent. He had a load of songs in his arsenal, and not a bum one in the bunch. But as a loyal viewer in the late 1970s, I always perked up when Bob busted out a rendition of "One of These Things," "A Face" or "The People in Your Neighborhood."
The vast majority of my earliest memories center on movies, television and music. I retain fragments of going to see "Star Wars" in 1977, rocking to and fro in front of my record player...

“Sesame Street” icon Bob McGrath, who portrayed the kind-hearted music teacher Bob Johnson from the series’ first episode in 1969 until 2017, has died at the age of 90. The actor was far more than one beloved character though, and led an exciting life filled with music, various acting roles and charity work.
McGrath’s passing was confirmed with a statement on his Facebook page on Sunday: “The McGrath family has some sad news to share. Our father Bob McGrath, passed away today. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.”
Born in 1932, McGrath was a graduate of University of Michigan, and received a Master of Music degree in Voice, from Manhattan School of Music in 1959 before serving two years in the United States Army. The late Tobe Hooper might best be known for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist, but he directed more than a handful of classics, including the awesome 1993 horror Night Terrors, starring none other than A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Robert Englund.
Patrick Bromley wrote about the film for Bloody Disgusting earlier this year, which follows a woman visiting her father in Egypt who becomes involved with Marquis De Sade’s (Robert Englund) descendant and his terrifying cult.
Patrick explains, “Hooper was a last-minute replacement for this offbeat horror movie, which attempts to bridge flashbacks of the Marquis de Sade with the modern-day story of a young woman (Zoe Trilling) who gets involved with a weird sex cult (led by Englund in the second of his dual roles).”

A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that was made by one of the legendary “masters of horror”. The master in question is Tobe Hooper, the director who brought us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Funhouse, and the Hooper movie we’re recommending today is his 1985 “space vampires” sci-fi horror movie Lifeforce (watch it Here). To find out all about Lifeforce, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Hooper from a screenplay by Dan O’Bannon and Don Jakoby and based on the novel The Space Vampires by Colin Wilson, Lifeforce has the following synopsis: A mission to investigate Halley’s Comet discovers an even stranger phenomenon: an alien spacecraft! Following a deadly confrontation, the aliens arrive on Earth, where their seductive leader begins a terrifying campaign to...

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a heady, psychological science-fiction thriller about a group of scientists who find themselves trapped at an arctic research base with a shapeshifting alien that is slowly consuming and impersonating every member of their crew. Carpenter's version is based on the 1938 novella written by John W. Campbell Jr. titled, "Who Goes There?," as well as the 1951 film adaptation, "The Thing from Another World." At the time of its release, "The Thing" was largely criticized for its dark tone which was in stark contrast to the other alien-centered film also making the rounds in theaters at the time: Steven Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." But even though audiences and critics weren't quite ready to be assimilated into the frigid atmosphere of Carpenter's film just yet, eventually "The Thing" found its fans, and it is now largely considered to be one of Carpenter's best creations.

Fright master Tobe Hooper’s 1982 movie has Steven Spielberg’s fingerprints all over it, but has a disturbing, satirical edge that’s all its own
The 80s classic gets a Halloween re-release for its 40th anniversary: a supernatural chiller and anti-gentrification satire that came out the same year as Et – Mr Hyde to that film’s Dr Jekyll, perhaps – and one of the most Spielbergian films not actually directed by Steven Spielberg. It is also a movie with its own particular flavour of sadness, owing to the early deaths of two of its stars: Dominique Dunne, daughter of author Dominick Dunne and niece of Joan Didion, killed in the year of the film’s release by her violent ex-boyfriend, and Heather O’Rourke, who died in 1988 at 12 years oldafter suffering cardiac arrest and septic shock connected with a bowel condition.

Hollywood didn't force Tobe Hooper to make horror movies, but he and other top genre directors may have felt a little trapped in genre jail by the Hollywood brass. Tobe Hooper began his career as more of a surrealist filmmaker with the hallucinatory hippie romance "Eggshells" back in 1969. Hooper shot the film in Austin, Texas where, at that time, the capitol city was becoming a haven for the blossoming counter culture movement, even if local law enforcement and conservative Texans weren't exactly welcoming them with open arms. Hooper's inventiveness and prowess behind the camera was already apparent in "Eggshells," especially in the more psychedelic sequences that used a lot of camera tricks and compositing to make it feel like the viewer was going through the same psychotropic journey as the hippie couple up on screen.
There were already echoes of Hooper's next film, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," in the setup for "Eggshells,...

The thing about being a fan of horror movies is that the more of them you see the less scary they become. The mind starts to desensitize itself to the jump scares and the gore so that what might be downright terrifying to the uninitiated ends up being only mildly frightening to a super fan. Recently, "Terrifier 2," the sequel to Damien Leone's 2016 splatter film about the homicidal Art the Clown, has been making headlines for its decision to really Go There with its gore. There have been reports of people passing out in theaters, seemingly unable to stomach the horrors on screen, and even horror fans with the strongest of stomachs have commented on the extreme brutality of this new film. Over the years, many horror films have disturbed audiences in similar, visceral ways, but only one paved the way for the future of gore: Tobe Hooper's 1974 masterpiece,...

Almost 50 years on, there are few films that immerse the viewer so viscerally in terror as effectively as "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." It's not so much what Tobe Hooper shows, because the film is nowhere near as gory as its title or reputation suggests. It is more the sweltering atmosphere of all-encompassing insanity that frays the nerves.
Loosely based on the ghoulish crimes of murderer and graverobber Ed Gein, the film hit theaters in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the disastrous U.S. involvement in Vietnam. In response to the grim political landscape at the time, Hooper wanted his film to reflect the general cynicism many people felt. Unlike the vampires and ancient mummies of the Hammer horror movies he loved in his youth, he realized that man was the real monster. In the hulking figure of Leatherface, all Hooper had to do was give his villain...

In the 1974 groundbreaking horror film "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns), her wheelchair-bound brother, Franklin (Paul A. Partain) and friends visit the fictional town of Newt, Texas to check the grave of the Hardesty's grandfather amid reports of body snacthing happening in the area. Things turn deadly after they pick up a sick and twisted hitchhiker (Edwin Neal) who, along with the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen ), is a part of a cannibalistic family. This gruesomeness that unfolds is foreshadowed by the film's opening images: badly decomposed corpses burning under the sun in a cemetery and roadkill.
You can almost smell the death through the screen. This was a strategic move made by the film's co-writer, director, and producer, the late Tobe Hooper, who prepped for making "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" by studying psychology and horror classics. The events of Tobe Hooper’s classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it Here) took place on August 18, 1973, so it’s very appropriate that the folks at Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham, who are hard at work on developing a Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game, chose to share a video preview of the game today. In this video, featured in the Twitter embed at the bottom of this article, we see a victim character jumping through a farmhouse window just like Sally Hardesty did in Hooper’s movie… but this character isn’t so lucky. Her attackers aren’t in the house behind her. They’re waiting for her outside. And they’re the iconic characters from Hooper’s movie; Leatherface, the Cook, and the Hitch-hiker.
The video ends with a reminder that matches of this Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game will pit four potential victims against three killers. You...
