Welcome to another horror/sci-fi round-up! This time around we have word of two big cast confirmations for Independence Day 2, details on Scream Factory's Deep in the Darkness Blu-ray / DVD release, and information on the new Blanc/Biehn Productions film, Treachery.
Independence Day 2: Last night it was revealed that the first official cast member had signed on to star in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2, the sequel to his 1996 film that featured massive alien-induced destruction and larger-than-life characters. It's now been confirmed that one of those characters will be coming back, as Emmerich tweeted last night that Jeff Goldblum will appear in the sequel, likely reprising his role as the brainy and dryly humorous David Levinson, who teamed up with fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller to take down the mothership in the original film. Smith will not be coming back to reprise his role as Steven.

When reviewing movies, it's sometimes hard to judge them fairly by the mediums they were created for. For instance, to come down as hard on a TV-movie created on a small budget as you do a bigger one like the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake would be unjust. That's how I tried to look at Chiller's Dead Souls.
Johnny Petrie (Jesse James) inherits an old farmhouse on his 18th birthday from a family he didn't even know he had. Tired of living under the thumb of his overprotective aunt (Geraldine Hughes), he decides to visit his boyhood home and solve the mystery as to who he really is. Upon arriving, he discovers his father (J.H. Torrance Downes) was a local preacher in the small Maine town. However, I was pleasantly surprised with Chiller’s original film Dead Souls (2012) based on the novel of the same name by Michael Laimo.
I’ll even go so far as to say that I had higher-than-usual expectations for this one and was pleased to see those expectations met. There are no fools working at Chiller's offices. Nary a one. They all know if you want to generate interest for your original feature films, you need big name actors. And who's better to fill that role than the legendary Bill Moseley?
He recently sat down and discussed his upcoming role in the Chiller original film, Dead Souls.
Dead Souls airs Friday, October 12th at 9:00 p.m. on Chiller. Check out Chillertv.com for more info.
Moseley talked about what drew him to the film. "Dead Souls is cool because it's one of the things that I love to do and don’t really do very much of and that is supernatural films," Moseley said. "The book by Michael Laimo and John Doolan’s script were very, very cool. It’s a supernatural thriller, it’s a whodunit in a way but there certainly are horrific elements. The farm...

Ok, so colour me surprised. I’ll admit I had no real idea what Remains was when I was sent it to review, to me it looked like it could be an interesting zombie movie. Little did I know it was based on the comic of the same name by Steve Niles, the genius behind 30 Days of Night. Turning his hand from vampire lore to zombie tale, with the comic Niles once again manages to create a refreshing new take on a oft-told and familiar story; and the same applies to this movie which was made by, and originally aired on, the Chiller cable network in the Us.

Recently Dread Central was lucky enough to travel to the quiet town of Canterbury, Connecticut, to visit the set of the upcoming Chiller original production Dead Souls. The film, scheduled to hit the television airwaves in October, was directed by Colin Theys and boasts the one and only Bill Moseley amongst the impressive cast.
Upon arriving at the set, one thing was abundantly clear: The production team that sought to find a location to be used as a haunted house was incredibly effective. The abandoned farmhouse used in Dead Souls was incredibly creepy. Add to that the fact that a scraggly bearded Bill Moseley was sitting on a rock outside the barn as you walked up the driveway, and the creep factor of this place goes through the roof!
Moseley spoke on working with the Dead Souls cast and crew. "They really know their stuff," Moseley said. "I think Colin [Theys] is a really cool director.

Premiering this fall is the John Doolan-penned adaptation of Steve Niles' Remains, which was originally a five-issue comic series Idw put out back in 2004 (I think I have the trade paperback floating around here somewhere...). The flick, which will air on Chiller, was directed by Colin Theys and tells the story of a blackjack dealer and exotic dancer who survive a nuclear accident that turns everyone else into zombies. I can't remember much about it aside from the basic premise, but one would have to assume they're not the last people on earth considering Kieron Dwyer's Comic-Con poster features more than a few hard-boiled characters on it. Check past the break for the new art, which you'll presumably be able to grab next week if you're heading out to San Diego.

According to Multichannel Chiller will look to build on the ratings success of its first original special with the roll-out of two original films and a new special, the network announced Tuesday.
Among the original film titles slated for 2011 is Steve Niles' "Remains", which follows the two lone survivors of a bizarre accident that reduced most of the world's population to zombies, said network officials. Television's horror network Chiller - much like SyFy - is getting in on the "original" production game. The channel announced it has two films on the way, which will make their premiere later this year. The first is Ghoul - which made news yesterday and is based on the novel by Brian Keene. The second is an adaptation of Steve Niles' graphic novel "Remains," a zombie apocalypse tale set in Reno, Nevada. John Doolan is scripting and Colin Theys is directing. "Remains" has a rather large scope - given its setting - let's hope the film does the story justice. In other Chiller news, the network is going to air Chiller 13: Horror's Creepiest Kids .

Unbeknownst to the authorities, the impounded truck holds a deadly cargo in the form of the legendary Sasquatch. Connecticut-based genre factory Synthetic Cinema sent along word that production has begun on The Opponent, the over-the-top alien-on-Earth opus that marks its sixth feature. The company also revealed a bit of casting news for the movie, including Roddy Piper, who previously tangled with extraterrestrials in John Carpenter’s They Live (pictured).
The Opponent, which we previously reported on here, also stars Jeremy London, who has recently been seen in Sci Fi Channel flicks like Basilisk: The Serpent King and BA’Al: The Storm God. A co-production with India’s Vijay Cine Enterprises, the film is being directed by Colin Theys, a digital FX artist who helmed Synthetic’s upcoming Banshee!!! (premiering on the Chiller network later his year), from a script by John Doolan. The story concerns the havoc that ensues when an alien being crashlands in a rural junkyard, and a cash bounty placed by its owner leads all...

The team over at Synthetic Cinema gave Fango the exclusive first look at the trailer for their new creature feature Sasquatch Assault; you can see it below. They also gave us some details on the next round of fright films they have coming up, which they’ll co-produce with India’s Vijaya Cine.
Synthetic and Vijaya will shoot four movies in the former’s home state of Connecticut over the next 18 months, with cameras starting to roll in July. “I’m very excited about Sasquatch Assault [which we last reported on here] and the new lineup of features,” Synthetic producer Andrew Gernhard (who also helmed Sasquatch) tells Fango. “I believe the team-up of our company and Vijaya Cine is key at this moment in time, when film production is down all around the world. We will be providing a new alternative to an otherwise overdone genre. Bringing creatures, action and horror together at a decent budget...

Producer and first-time director Andrew Gernhard passed along a bunch of exclusive images (see ’em below) and a status report on Sasquatch Assault. We last reported on the John Doolan-scripted film, in which a Bigfoot terrorizes an urban police station, here.
“Sasquatch Assault is currently in postproduction; we’re 30 minutes into the rough cut,” Gernhard tells Fango. “We have also begun the digital effects work as of…uh, 15 minutes ago. Once again, that team is led by Colin Theys. We have to be very precise with the effects in this film, due to the fact that we are mastering to 35mm scope. Our completion date is early March.”
Gernhard’s previous producing credits for his Synthetic Cinema company include Predator Island, Blood Descendants, Werewolf: The Devil’S Hound and the upcoming Banshee!!! He admits that he never actually aspired to be a director, “which basically everyone who goes to...

John Doolan, the screenwriter of Synthetic Cinema International’s fifth feature Sasquatch Assault, got in touch to give us the skinny on the movie, currently shooting in Norwalk, Connecticut. Co-produced by Vijaya Cine Enterprises, the film is being produced and directed by Andrew Gernhard (who previously served as producer on Synthetic’s genre outings Banshee!!!, Blood Descendents and Werewolf: The Devil’s Hound, among others, and dropped us some FX-test and early set photos—see below).
“I took a lot of inspiration from some of John Carpenter's films, like The Fog, The Thing, Prince Of Darkness and Assault On Precinct 13,” Doolan tells Fango. “I have to admit that I also watched a lot of the not-so-successful Sasquatch films to avoid making any similar mistakes.” Starring Synthetic alumni Greg Nutcher, Hank Torrance, Cristina Santiago, Michael Wrann and Kevin Shea, along with newcomers Alex Exum, Cuyle Carvin, Sarah J. Ahearn and Andrea Sáenz,...
