After a disappointing turnout in theaters for Arnold Schwarzenegger's first leading role in a film since 2003, The Last Stand has hit Blu-ray and DVD. It's a good thing we live in a day and age where movies get a second chance in a home entertainment environment. All the people who dismissed it the first time can see what they missed out on.
Ex-lapd officer Ray Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has retired to the small border town of Sommerton Junction. He's taken the position of sheriff in the quiet community. Things get heated up when Ray discovers the leader of a drug cartel, Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), is heading through the heart of Sommerton Junction as he speeds toward Mexico and freedom. It's up to Owens and his inexperienced deputies to stop Cortez and his gang as they prepare for a daring escape across the border.

"This is getting boring, get the big gun!"
International drug lord Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) is being transferred by the FBI to “federal death row”. But in an elaborate escape plan, headed by Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez gets away with Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) in hot pursuit. Meanwhile, in Sommerton Junction, Az, Sheriff Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has a dead farmer on his hands. And, in light of the fact that there were some suspicious characters in the diner the day before, that can mean only one thing. That’s right, the evil cartel mercenaries intend to bring Cortez through Sommerton, leaving Owens and his ragtag crew of Figgy (Luis Guzmán), gun nut Dinkum (Johnny Knoxville), Deputy Sarah (Jaimie Alexander), and local bad boy Frank (Rodrigo Santoro) to stop them.

★★☆☆☆ Over the past few years, a trend has emerged that's seen action stars of yesteryear tooling up once more to riddle bad guys with bullet holes and quip to their heart's content. Spearheaded by The Expendables (2010), this new sub-genre isn't interested in papering over the multiplying creases in the foreheads of its leading men, but wholeheartedly embraces them. After all, they not only allow for, but positively encourage all manner of jovial wise-cracking about being "too old for this shit". The latest star to step back into the breach is ex-Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kim Jee-woon's The Last Stand (2013).
Already admired for his balls-to-the-wall action and stylish set pieces, the Korean director's first English language feature sets up small-town sheriff Ray (Schwarzenegger) as the last line of defence against a dangerous gangster on the run. Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) has escaped from the Federal custody of Agent John Bannister...

He might be a little older and a little slower, but Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in form with The Last Stand. It is a throwback that mixes western, action and comedy elements into an explosive stylized movie that doesn't quite fire on all cylinders, but is still an entertaining ride. Written by Andrew Knauer and directed by Kim Ji-woon (The Good, the Bad, the Weird and A Tale of Two Sisters), The Last Stand sees Schwarzenegger joined by Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Rodrigo Santoro, Luis Guzmán, Jaimie Alexander, Eduardo Noriega, Peter Stormare, Zach Gilford, and Génesis Rodríguez. The Last Stand.s plot is pretty straight-forward. The world.s most dangerous drug crime lord, Gabriel Cortez (Noriega), is being transferred to...

After a temporary retirement and a brief stint as the Governator of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to the silver screen. Schwarzenegger has had a few cameos in The Expendables franchise but The Last Stand marks the first time Schwarzenegger has taken the lead in a film since Terminator 3. With such a long layoff one wonders if Schwarzenegger could pick up where he left off. While he would never be confused with an acting savant, he brought a certain magnetic charm that made him one of the world’s biggest action stars. Perhaps it’s an issue of too much rust on the gears or a hindrance due to advanced age that has water downed his charismatic persona. His movements are achy, his punches are feeble,...

After a decade away from the big screen, chipping away at the political arena and teasing us with several enthusiastic cameo appearances, it appears that Arnold Schwarzenegger is back for good. His first starring role since Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines sees the beloved action star at arguably his most self-aware, a savvy move which allows skilled South Korean director Kim Ji-woon (A Bittersweet Life, The Good, The Bad and the Weird, I Saw the Devil) to stage several kinetic firefights around the actor without causing him to stand out as some of his old-school contemporaries tend to in films such as this.
Primarily geared towards those old enough to have been reared on a healthy diet of the actor’s golden run of action movies during the 1980s and 90s, The Last Stand might not do much for younger audiences, but for those prepared to give in to nostalgia,...

The Last Stand is released in UK cinemas today. We’ve been fortunate enough to interview Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jaimie Alexander already for the movie, both of which are here if you missed them. The final interview is with comedy side-kick Johnny Knoxville who you’ll know best from the Jack-Ass TV show and movies.
Joe Cunningham takes on the task of interviewing him and finds out if the only reason he took on the role was work with the action legend Mr. Schwarzenegger. Turns out it pretty much was but you can’t blame him can you?!

★★★☆☆ With The Last Stand (2013), the Austrian Oak Arnold Schwarzenegger - like he always said he would be - is back on leading man duty once again. The former Mr. Universe turned Mr. California returns as a different kind of public servant, an ex-lapd narcotics cop lying low as the sheriff of Sommerton Junction, a sleepy Arizona border town. When a heavily connected cartel lord, Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), is busted out of federal custody in the most improbable car-jacking since Fast Five (2012) and heads for Mexico, Gary Cooper-like lawman Arnold, and his ramshackle posse of crooked-shooting deputies, set out to stop him.

Arnold Schwarzenegger banned his 'The Last Stand' co-star Johnny Knoxville from carrying out pranks on set. The 41-year-old star is famed for his outrageous stunts and jokes from his time on MTV show 'Jackass', but the 65-year-old action legend told Johnny he didn't want to experience his jokes while making the movie - which sees Arnold and Johnny appearing as Sheriff Ray Owens and arms collector Lewis Dinkum who must protect their town from drug lord Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega). Talking to The Sun newspaper, Arnold said: 'I forbade him. I told him the payback would be very painful. As we count down the days until The Last Stand hits cinemas across the UK (our review here and interviews from the UK premiere up here), much of the attention is being directed at a certain Arnold Schwarzenegger taking on his first lead role in a decade – yet one of the stars of the piece is Jaimie Alexander, and we were fortunate enough to speak to the talented actress ahead of the films release.
Alexander takes on the role of Sarah Torrance, an inexperienced police officer called into action in her small Southern town of Sommerton Junction alongside sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger), to fight against the drug cartel leader and fugitive Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) on his bid to cross the border into Mexico.

New 'The Last Stand' movie delivered great action, lots of violence, drama & more. Lionsgate released their new mega action flick "The Last Stand" into theaters this weekend. I just watched it and thought it was highly entertaining as Arnold Schwarzenegger was back in major action to take down a violent criminal that escaped from prison, and was trying to cross the Mexican border. The movie stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Rodrigo Santoro, Jaimie Alexander, Luis Guzmán, Eduardo Noriega, Peter Stormare, Zach Gilford, Genesis Rodriguez, Daniel Henney, and John Patrick Amedori. In the new movie, after leaving his Lapd narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger) ,moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life ,fighting what little crime takes place in a sleepy border town called, Sommerton Junction. However, this peaceful existence ,ends...

Movie heroes tend to come and go in cycles, with inspiring golden boy Rocky eventually giving way to brooding menaces like Rambo, and vice versa. Machine gun-toting lugs of the ‘80s and ‘90s used to be the prime examples of this routine, before they aged out and special effects took their place. Now, audiences can’t settle for one guy taking on a dozen terrorists, they flock to see superheroes avert nuclear annihilation, or defend us from massive alien invasions. The comic book genre has taken the place of action movies as the purest source of refined, uncut, popcorn entertainment; they’ve even adapted the pattern of stylistic overturn, with wisecracking Spider-Man passing the baton to the brooding Batman, who in turn gave the box office crown to those lovable Avengers last summer.
So what’d the old guard do? They made their own Avengers, and did so two years before Marvel did.

Chicago – With enough hair plugs, bronzer and hormone injections to float a rejuvenation clinic, Arnold Schwarzenegger is back from his political meanderings and is an action star once again in the shoot-’em-up “The Last Stand.” Johnny Knoxville lends some comic relief.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
This is an okay comic book-type movie, even interesting at some points, but it isn’t anything new or special. Arnold revitalizes his stoic catch-phrase-rapping character with few steps lost, save for the furrowed face lines in close-up. The FBI’s incompetence, and the subsequent waste of tax dollars in trying to catch an escaped convict – during our ongoing debt crisis – is laughable, and the use of firearms and the way that people die is questionable timing one month after Newtown. But hell, these type of movies don’t care and neither did the preview audience in attendance, cheering each quality kill.

One of the best parts about any Arnold Schwarzenegger movie is when they manage to explain how a gigantic muscle-bound Austrian man – most likely with a bland and dorky sounding American name – winds up in each ridiculous situation that stands for the movie’s plot. Most of the reasons involve him being ex-military or police who managed to get out of a hairy situation before it got the best of him, all the while leaving him emotionally scarred in the process. Here, in Arnie’s big return to headlining the kind of balls-to-the-wall action that’s his raison d’être, it’s no different. He plays Sheriff Ray Owens, an ex-lapd narcotics officer who left his shady past behind him to move to the small Arizona border town of Sommerton Junction to live a peaceful and quiet life free from all possible harm.

The Last Stand
Directed by: Jee-woon Kim
Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville
Running Time: 1 hr 47 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 18, 2013
Plot: The leader of a drug cartel (Eduardo Noriega) busts out of prison and heads to the Mexican border. A local sheriff (Schwarzenegger) and duties are the only thing that stand in his way.
Who’S It For? Did you need Schwarzenegger back in a leading action role? Well, this is what you get. I was curious for this one, but not excited. In fact, I’m more excited about Zach Gilford’s career than Schwarzenegger’s.
Overall
Cool moments, but no care. The Last Stand walks you through the beats of an action movie, with some familiar 80s-style moments, and an icon who thinks he’s still getting it done.
For quite a while it seems there are two separate stories going on in The Last Stand.

The unofficial motto for The Last Stand could very well be something along the lines of ‘the more things change the more they remain the same.’ It was not so long ago that Arnold Schwarzenegger, star of the film under review, was still blasting through walls, robots and people in major Hollywood motion pictures. Elsewhere in the world, a little over a decade ago, mainstream South Korean cinema was beginning to take off and make a real name for itself in other parts of the globe, the most recognizable export being Oldboy from Park Chan-wook, which has achieved near legendary status by now. In the last decade, South Korean movies have become all the craze while Schwarzenegger served not one but two terms as the Governor of the state of California. As such, it many be...

"The Last Stand" is the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie you didn't even realize you wanted to see.
This is the action superstar's first leading role in a decade, having left acting to serve as the governor of California and whatnot, and while it may not have occurred to you to miss him during that time, it's still surprisingly good to see him on the big screen again.
He is not exactly pushing himself here. Korean director Kim Jee-woon's American filmmaking debut turns out to be an extremely Schwarzeneggerish Schwarzenegger film, full of big, violent set pieces and broad comedy. He may look a little creaky (and facially freaky) these days, but Arnold proves he's still game for the mayhem as he fires off rounds and tosses off one-liners, and the movie at least has the decency to acknowledge that it knows that you know that he's old.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “The Last Stand” looks and feels like an old school action movie, and if you happen to be a fan of that kind of cinema, then it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed by the film. After dabbling in politics and acting in a few supporting parts, Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in his first staring role in nearly a decade with the action/comedy “The Last Stand," which hits theaters January 18. In “The Last Stand,” Schwarzenegger plays Ray Owens, a sheriff of a small, sleepy border town that is the last hurdle to Mexico for a deadly drug kingpin, Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega). Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) and the FBI lost Cortez while they had him in custody, but while they are hot on his trail, it will be up to the sheriff and his motley crew to stop Cortez and ruthless mercenaries aiding his escape. After his last staring role in 2003‘s “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” Schwarzenegger was California’s governor from 2003 to 2011. He had small roles in “Around the World in 80 Days” and the action hero reunion movie, “The Expendables,...

The film sees Ray Owens (Arnie), the sheriff of a small border town trying to stop the destruction brought by notorious criminal Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) as he evades the feds and heads for the Mexican border with a convoy of armed goons. A new red band trailer for The Last Stand starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville has arrived and it offers up a little blood and an exploding body. The Last Stand hits theaters on January 18 and marks Arnold's most recent return to the big screen as Ray Owens, sheriff in the border town of Sommerton Junction who finds his sleepy day-to-day grind disrupted by Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), a wanted drug kingpin who just escaped from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a band of lawless mercenaries led by Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the Us-Mexico border with a hostage in tow. Guess what, Arnold is gonna stop him. The film co-stars Rodrigo Santoro, Jaimie Alexander, Zach Gilford, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville and Genesis Rodriguez. I'm actually a little interested in seeing this one, more for the fact it marks the English-language directorial debut of Jee-Woon Kim (I Saw the Devil,...

South Korean director Kim Jee-woon knows how to make a great action film. With films like The Good, The Bad, The Weird and I Saw the Devil under his belt, it's hard not to think that The Last Stand is going to be a really fun and entertaining action film. If it ends up not being that I'll blame the Hollywood studio system.
The clip features Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville trapped in a bus under heavy gunfire. Schwarzengger requests cover and makes a run for it!
