Since the official word broke that Nintendo is pursuing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, my head has been spinning with possibilities of what the film will look like. Hyrule is undoubtedly one of the most lush, intricate, and enigmatic kingdoms under Nintendo’s imaginative umbrella. When Maze Runner director Wes Ball approaches Link and Zelda’s world, he must pull out all the stops. Thankfully, it sounds like Ball is off to a great start. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ball said he wants The Legend of Zelda to feel like a live-action Miyazaki film, which is music to my ears. Hayao Miyazaki is the legend who co-founded Studio Ghibli and is often called the “Godfather of Anime.” Imagine Link, Zelda, and Ganon inhabiting a world as fantasy-driven as Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro or Howl’s Moving Castle. The possibilities are endless.

Well, they finally did it. After a supposed decade in the works and 35 years of fans imagining what a movie would look like, Nintendo has officially willed a feature film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda into existence. Yet what should have been cause for celebration was met with a thud.
But why? As we’re entering what looks to be the dawn of Hollywood’s video game takeover, you’d think that news of a Zelda movie would be a shoo-in. Riding high off their billion-dollar Super Mario Bros. movie,...

Hand over your crowns, Batman and Iron Man, it's Mario and Freddy Fazbear's time to reign dominant over the box office. Yes, it seems video game adaptations might be the next big thing in Hollywood, now that the generation of kids who were raised on gaming consoles and point-and-click titles are old enough to purchase movie tickets for themselves. And with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" allowing Nintendo to successfully expand into the film business, what better time for the paterfamilias of high-fantasy video game series, "The Legend of Zelda," to finally make its way to the big screen in live-action?
This isn't the first time Nintendo has adapted the adventures of Link, Zelda, and the other citizens of Hyrule for a different medium. 1989's "The Super Mario Bros. It was announced this week that director Wes Ball will be helming a live-action feature film based on the Nintendo video game franchise "The Legend of Zelda." The original 1986 "Legend of Zelda" game took place in a fantasy kingdom called Hyrule, which had become overrun by monsters after the evil pig-like overlord Ganon kidnapped Princess Zelda. Players controlled an elf-like hero named Link as he traversed dungeons, collecting a growing array of weapons and seeking pieces of the Triforce, a triangular widget of ineffable power. It was Nintendo's riff on the high fantasy genre, taking cues from "Dungeons & Dragons" and J.R.R. Tolkien.
In the 37 years since the game's release, it has become a massive property unto itself, spawning 19 sequels and a 1989 animated segment that ran as part of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show." It would have seemed logical to have made a "Legend of Zelda" feature film by now,...

Nintendo announced today that they are developing a live-action Legend of Zelda movie set to be directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and written by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World). Update: Scooper Daniel Richtman shared on his Patreon that the studio is looking for an actor between the ages of 15-20 to play Link, which likely means that Tom Holland, who has frequently been fan-cast as the character, is out of the running.
The film will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc. Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. will handle worldwide distribution of the Legend of Zelda movie, as well as co-finance the project with Nintendo. Miyamoto confirmed on X/Twitter that he has “been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.

Watch out, Mario, because Link's right behind you! "The Legend of Zelda," arguably Nintendo's second most-famous franchise, is getting its own movie adaptation -- but this time, it'll be in live-action. According to Nintendo, director Wes Ball is set to direct the film, which will be produced by video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie") and Avi Arad ("Spider-Man"). Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-produce the film, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing, and Sony will handle theatrical distribution around the globe. This isn't the first time someone's tried to make a live-action version of the world of Hyrule, but hopefully Sony Pictures has better luck than Netflix did with their ill-fated attempt at an adaptation a few years back.

For decades, fans have struggled to lay out the Legend of Zelda series’ chronology. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild didn’t help matters as it introduced a Hyrule ravaged by Calamity Ganon. Nobody really knew which part of the timeline the game fit into; just that it took place in the far future of one of them.
The latest Legend of Zelda game, Tears of the Kingdom, is a sequel to Breath of the Wild. The game’s first teaser trailer stated that fact quite blunty, so clearly Tears of the Kingdom must take place after Breath of the Wild. For the most part, that does seem to be the case. Many characters from Breath of the Wild return in this game slightly older and slightly different than they were before. Heck, Hyrule now has a newspaper, so several years have clearly passed. When it arrived in 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild changed everything. Abandoning comfortable formulas the series had leaned on for almost 30 years, it instead focused on one very simple premise, one that the original game in the series was predicated on: discovery. Pure, unfettered discovery.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a bold new direction for the Zelda series. The game sported an open world and semi-survival genre mechanics that helped refresh and recontextualize the franchise. However, while the title was fantastic overall, it dropped the ball in several places. Most notably, the game lacked proper dungeons. The closest the game gave us to such dungeons were the Divine Beasts, which served as vaguely dungeon-like experiences and played a substantial role in the game’s narrative and world. Their significance makes it all the stranger that nobody can seem to find the Divine Beasts in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda’s title is a bit of a running gag. For a game named after one of its title characters, players rarely get to control the titular Princess Zelda. Usually, fans step into the boots of Link, and Zelda’s role is essentially that of a magical MacGuffin. But there are exceptions.
Mods notwithstanding, gamers get to play as Zelda in a few official titles. The most obvious example is, of course, Super Smash Bros. Zelda and her alter ego Sheik have been playable parts of the franchise ever since Melee, and many players love using them to dominate arenas (or knocking them out of bounds). But what Legend of Zelda games let players save Hyrule as Princess Zelda? There aren’t many, and they aren’t all great, but unless Tears of the Kingdom features a big playable surprise, these are the only official (and one...

A surprising thing has happened over the last few weeks: The Night Agent became one of the 10 most-watched Netflix series of all time. This isn’t a knock on the spy-thriller, which features the usual solid craftsmanship of The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, a brisk pace, and some likable lead performances. But it’s also a show without big stars (even if supporting player Hong Chau is a recent Oscar nominee) or an attention-getting premise designed to spread word of mouth. A new trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom just dropped and it is, by far, the best preview of the game we’ve seen so far. For decades, Nintendo has shied away from adapting its beloved video games to film – an absolutely appropriate response after witnessing 1993’s live action Super Mario Bros. It’s taken the lauded game maker thirty years to get over that particular trauma, but with Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie now in cinemas and aiming to break the curse, it’s time to see which other Nintendo properties could warrant an outing on the big screen – and what form they might take.
The Legend Of Zelda
This is a gimme – and one that’s rumoured to already be in development. Zelda is by far Nintendo’s most storied franchise, and one rich in material to mine for the silver screen. Almost any one of the series’ games could serve as a basis for a movie, with heroic Link’s quest to overthrow the evil Ganon and rescue Princess Zelda offering a strong template.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can’t get here fast enough. Sure, the game recently went gold, but its launch is still a month and a half away. Of course, that wait now feels just a bit longer thanks to the introduction of what is probably the greatest feature in any Zelda game and certainly one of the most hilarious.
Earlier today, the producer of Tears of the Kingdom, Eiji Aounuma, walked audiences through a long-awaited gameplay demonstration of the upcoming title. Gamers already knew much of the information he displayed (such as floating islands and the ability to swim through ceilings), but Aonuma was kind enough to show off two new abilities: Fuse and Ultrahand.
The difference between these skills is one of utility. Judging by the gameplay demo, Fuse will let players combine weapons with items both in the world and their inventory for a variety of results.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom‘s second trailer unsurprisingly stole the show during the latest Nintendo Direct. While a lot of the talk surrounding that trailer so far has focused on Ganon (and what appears to be Ganon’s unexpected voiceover), some Zelda fans are more interested in the returning villains the trailer only hints at.
Before we dive into any of that, please know that (to the best of our knowledge) much of this information is largely speculative at this time. Since we could end up discussing potential spoilers, though, it’s best to turn away now if you’d like to go into Tears of the Kingdom knowing as little as possible. With that out of the way, let’s talk about some of the classic villains...

The latest trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was…ok. It didn’t reveal a ton of new info beyond confirmation of the game’s May 12th release date, but it was certainly quite the spectacle that also included what seems to be the first significant bit of Ganon/Ganondorf voice acting…well, ever. Actually, that voice acting is already driving Zelda fans wild.
First, a couple of disclaimers. While many believe that the voice at the beginning of the Tears of the Kingdom trailer belongs to Ganon, Ganondorf, or Calamity Ganon, there’s been no confirmation of that information as of the time of this writing. For that matter, Nintendo hasn’t technically confirmed that Ganon will even have a major role in the game. That voice could very well belong to some other villainous creature. Even still, there have been too many hints of Ganon’s presence to ignore.

The Legend of Zelda primarily revolves around three characters: protagonists Princess Zelda (duh) and Link, as well as the villainous Ganondorf. Or is it Ganon?
Ganon is arguably one of the most iconic villains in video game history, which is especially impressive when you consider he was also one of the first. When gamers were introduced to the character in the first Legend of Zelda game, Ganon was just a big, blue, anthropomorphic boar who teleported around the room and shot fireballs at Link. During that fight, Ganon had neither backstory nor personality, but subsequent entries expanded on the character and revealed he used to be a human (retconned to Gerudo) named Ganondorf. Ocarina of Time let players see and fight Ganondorf for the first time, and ever since, the franchise has switched between the two villains, and because of shifting tones, it’s hard to get a beat on the two characters.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the only game franchises out there that can continually star characters who look, sound, and act the same without them technically being the same characters (with a few exceptions). Aside from superficial similarities, timeless character roles, and Link’s general refusal to speak, the Links and Zeldas of the Legend of Zelda franchise share little in common, including their ages.
It’s no secret that some Links and Zeldas are older than others. All one has to do is compare the Link from Wind Waker to the Link from Twilight Princess to see all Links are not meant to be the same age. However, actually determining the characters’ respective ages on a game-by-game basis is far more complicated. The Legend of Zelda games rarely come out and say how old its cast is supposed to be, so we’re usually left to rely on guides,...

The Legend of Zelda franchise has been going strong for over 35 years. While there’s no one aspect of that incredible series that fans will agree they love the most, anyone who has played a Zelda game likely has fond memories of at least one of its dungeons.
Every Zelda game includes several dungeons. Each of those dungeons houses unique items that are necessary for future challenges, and most of those items are guarded by tough boss and mini-boss monsters that serve as their own setpieces. More often than not, Zelda dungeons are the highlight of each adventure. Just because they are the best portions of their own respective games, though, doesn’t mean all dungeons are created equal. Most of these puzzle and enemy gauntlets blend in with the rest of the considerable crowd, while others live on in infamy due to their bad design. Once in a blue moon,...
