While wide releases like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Dunkirk, Baby Driver, John Wick: Chapter 2, and Logan Lucky either met or fulfilled expectations this year, we had to dig deep for the studio films that caught us pleasantly off-guard. While much of our year-end coverage will be focusing on the overlooked gems, today we’re highlighting the few major releases that left us surprised.
Note that the below ten features are strictly films that received a wide release on their opening weekend and not ones that eventually expanded with a roll-out. Some, for various reasons, arrived with virtually little-to-no anticipation around these parts, while others wildly exceeded our standard expectations, and a few managed to be among our favorites of the year.
Check out our selections below and let us know what surprised you most in 2017.

The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, recently opened up to Vulture about that Stephen King reference featured in the third episode titled "Chapter Three: The Pollywog" when Bob Newby (Sean Astin) gives Will (Noah Schnapp) what turns out to be some not so great advice, but it sounds awfully familiar. Fans recently pointed it out, but now the creators of the show are opening up about it.
In the scene, Bob recalls a recurring nightmare he experienced as a child in which he was terrorized by a clown named Mr. Baldo. He even goes as far as impersonating the Clown from his nightmares which ends up sounding a lot like an impression of Tim Curry’s iconic take on Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King’s It.
During their recap Matt explained that Bob’s fear of clowns comes from their own and that they took this opportunity...

In the first season of “Stranger Things,” the quartet of young men (“the party,” to use the parlance of Dungeons and Dragons) is clearly a direct homage to the show’s love of Stephen King (many of King’s narratives revolve around similar friend groups). But it’s the addition of Eleven to the group — the “mage,” as Mike likes to refer to her — that aligns the show with an even more common trope.
Nearly any child of the ’80s and ’90s will fondly remember, as a part of their youth, watching cartoons. And for boys, there was a lot of fun to be had in identifying with certain characters. You could be a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” fan, but more intellectual types might consider themselves to be Donatello, while a more rebellious boy might prefer to don the red eye mask of Raphael.
Meanwhile, if you were a girl...

In accordance with earlier reports, filming on 20th Century Fox and Josh Boone’s New Mutants spinoff has entered the home stretch, and an updated logo has arrived to prove it.
Posted to Boone’s personal Instagram feed (with a tip of the hat to Cbm), the logo below is drenched in blood. If nothing else, it proves Josh Boone wasn’t kidding around when he vowed to deliver a “full-blown” horror movie with New Mutants, and we’ve learned that the final product will be inspired by the horror trappings of Stephen King (It) and John Hughes.
Chronicling the story of gifted youngsters trapped within a super-secret research facility, New Mutants has endured a long, meandering journey to the big screen, but much like Deadpool 2 before it, principal photography is almost complete. As Boone revealed via Instagram, Fox’s 2018 spinoff has begun its last week of shooting in Canada,...

Thanks to some stronger-than-expected performances, this weekend ended up better than Mojo's forecast and yet, this is still the worst three-day Labor Day weekend in twelve years. The top twelve grossed a combined $51.5 million and you have to go back to 2000, when the top twelve grossed a combined $47 million, to find a worse performance. That said, both The Hitman's Bodyguard and Annabelle: Creation delivered strong performances to top the weekend. In fact, only four films in the top ten saw any kind of drop compared to last weekend and those drops were minimal with Annabelle's 5% drop being the largest within the top ten. Unfortunately the weekend's new releases didn't make much of a dent with Lionsgate's Hazlo Como Hombre and Weinstein's Tulip Fever failing to crack the top twenty. Lionsgate's The Hitman's Bodyguard finished atop the weekend chart for a third straight weekend in a row with an estimated $10.25 million.

It ain’t easy being a clown in the modern world. Thanks to real-life serial killers like John Wayne Gacy, who was known as the “Killer Clown,” as well as shows like American Horror Story: Freak Show, it’s impossible for some audience members to separate the fictional horrifying clowns to those who are just trying to make a living putting smiles on people’s faces.
Stephen King also didn’t help much with his novel It, which saw shapeshifter usually take on the form of Pennywise the Clown. This effect was amplified in 1990 when the miniseries came out, and with the new film on the horizon, there has been an increase in creepy clown sightings that are presumed to have been influenced by fans of King.
World Clown Association president Pam Moody spoke with THR regarding the difficulties that such sightings created for them.
"Last year we were really blindsided.

For the Us filmmaking duo, developing their sci-fi nostalgia-trip TV series Stranger Things was the culmination of a well-spent youth.
Growing up in North Carolina in the 1980s, twins Matt and Ross Duffer developed a love for genre and sci-fi with a particular passion for Steven Spielberg movies and Stephen King novels.
In a formative life event, echoing the plot of Jj Abrams’ Spielberg-inspired Super 8, the pair were gifted a video camera during third grade and began making amateur films.
Relocating to California to study film at Chapman University, the duo graduated in 2007 and immediately began taking steps into the movie business, collaborating on a series of short films and feature screenplays. Warner Bros optioned their post-apocalyptic horror script Hidden in 2011, and hired the brothers to direct Alexander Skarsgard and Andrea Riseborough in the film, which was released in 2015. MTV’s annual Movie Awards – now with TV attached – was as irreverent as usual on Sunday night. And yet, with this year’s entry, the tone was noticeably different.
For one thing, as widely noted, the newly rechristened “MTV Movie & TV Awards” included television series for the first time. And this was also perhaps the most woke MTV awards show in recent years, as the network embracing its decision to merge male and female performers into one, singular acting category. Other awards shows have blended male and female performers in the past, but never to the extent that a major kudocast like MTV has done.
And here’s how progressive Sunday night’s winners were: Of the 19 categories, all but two – was won (or shared a win) by a female and/or person of color, or a cast featuring women or people of color.
But for audiences at this year’s show,...

Prior to his signing on to direct Jurassic World, the reboot of the massively successful Jurassic Park franchise, Colin Trevorrow was known for a little indie flick called Safety Not Guaranteed. The film was your typical indie flick with a bit of a sci-fi twist, and it really showed his ability to tell a story. While Jurassic World made a whole boatload of money, there was a backlash to the film in terms of storytelling.
In the eyes of many who tried to give the film repeated viewings, the flick did not hold up very well when looked at too closely, and while it delivered on spectacle, it didn’t do much in terms of character. Many viewers haven’t let others forget this fact, but they may have forgotten that, as mentioned above, Trevorrow does have his beginnings in more character-focused fare. With his latest film, The Book of Henry,...

Update: Since this initial report from Variety, EW has come out and shared some rumors from their sources regarding what to expect from this version of Batgirl. According to the outlet, they'll be using the New 52 version of the character as a starting point. Here's the quote:
"Sources tell EW that this version will be Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon, and the movie will use the DC Comics “New 52” version of the character as a starting point."It’s unclear how much of that series, written by Gail Simone, will be incorporated into Whedon’s film, but sources tell EW the movie will follow Simone’s harder-edged storyline rather than the more comical, playful 'Batgirl of Burnside' series that was rebooted in 2014, featuring the hero as a social-media obsessed student living in a hipster neighborhood of Gotham."

Colin Trevorrow has had a busy few years. Not content with reanimating a classic franchise under the watchful eye of Steven Spielberg with Jurassic World, he’ll be finishing up the Skywalker saga in 2019 with Star Wars: Episode IX. Not bad for the Safety Not Guaranteed director… Today sees the release of a new poster and trailer for his latest film, The Book of Henry. Mighty fine they are looking too.
Written by Gregg Hurwitz (whose work has mainly been on TV, resurrecting the alien invaders mini series V) The Book of Henry is described as
the story of a single mother raising two boys, one of whom is a genius. After she discovers a book written by her son containing a plan to right a terrible wrong happening next door, she attempts to execute the plan, and in the process discovers new strength as a parent.

While bumming a cigarette off a stranger is becoming rarer these days, “Thank You for Smoking” could end up coming to our TVs anyway, reports Variety.
Thanks to Keshet Studios, the 2005 Jason Reitman satire is being adapted into an anthology series that would focus on a social issue each season. The first season of the revamped comedy would look at the gun control debate using the new title “Thank You for Shooting.”

Godzilla is hot, hot, hot right now! Hotter than his atomic breath.
In 2014, the King of the Monsters returned in a big way (pun intended) in Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, the official start of the MonsterVerse. Last year saw the release of Shin Godzilla, the latest Japanese entry in their storied franchise dating back to 1954. And there's more Godzilla to come, both in the MonsterVerse's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and Godzilla Vs Kong, as well as a new anime film set for release on Nextflix. Said anime film is now officially titled Godzilla: Kaiju Wajusei, which translates to Godzilla: Monster Planet.
We knew little about the film up until this point, but now Anime News Network has updates from Polygon Pictures' official website. More specifically, a poster and full synopsis!

The following is a recap of the first two episodes of FX’s Legion. The first outing introduced us to David Haller (Dan Stevens), a “mutant” living in a mental hospital called Clockworks. Through non-linear storytelling and an exploration of David’s world, we learned that our protagonist has lived his life believing that his telekinetic and telepathic superpowers are a mental illness.
During the pilot, we also get acquainted with some of the major events in his recent life. These include switching bodies with his girlfriend, Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), and escaping his mental hospital, Clockworks, during which his friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) dies in a wall that he may have created; returning home to his sister and talking with Lenny, his recently-deceased friend; getting captured and interrogated by a sinister governmental organization, before escaping with the help of Syd and fellow mutants; and joining up with a team of other superhumans,...

As we continue to enjoy living in this golden age of superheroes, science fiction and awesome pop culture in general, it’s important that we don’t forget about the genius minds who got us to this point. And, thankfully, neither have the folks behind the new Machinima series, Greater Creators.
Said web series stars internet sensation and all-around four-color guru Comic Book Girl 19, who aims to educate as well as entertain – and that she does when she kicks things off by shining the spotlight on none other than Jack “The King” Kirby.
For those unfamiliar, Kirby is one of the men we have to thank for Marvel books such as Fantastic Four and The Avengers, in addition to DC fan favorites such as Darkseid, the New Gods and Kamandi, the latter of which is currently being revisited by some of today’s top talents in a twelve-issue run.

Last year saw the release of Stranger Things on Netflix. The show was a love letter to ‘80s pop culture, and was something of a Stephen King/Steven Spielberg hybrid. Though as great as the series was, it’s also a show that could very well have faltered from one key factor: its casting. The show has four pre-teens leading it, along with a few high schoolers. Given the depth of the material, it’s something that could have been hard to watch had the kids done a horrible job.
Luckily for us fans, the kids were not just serviceable in their roles; they were amazing. While everyone in the cast did a stellar job (they did just win a SAG award for Best TV Drama Ensemble, after all), one of the big standout performances came from Millie Bobby Brown, who played the character Eleven.

We’ve known that The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone had been tapped to helm 2oth Century Fox’s New Mutants adaptation for a while now, but a few intriguing casting rumors and the potential team lineup aside, we haven’t had any official word on the project since. However, Coming Soon has just dropped a few major plot details that are sure to make fans of the original team of junior X-Men very happy indeed.

As a teen, I read some Stephen King books. Hell, I think either my mom or I joined The Stephen King Library if you fiends remember that. If you don’t remember that, how’s this ad to jog your memory:
What I do remember is when this book came out, it was maybe a bit more adult than I was wanting. Keep in mind, it came out when I was 11. However, I’ve been on a kick recently to try and read more and I’m beginning with King’s catalog as I got to the point where I just collected his work versus actually reading the novels and collections. Maybe I can crank this one out before the film adaptation gets released next year via Netflix. The production started principal photography in Alabama yesterday. Want more info, read on…

Another Stephen King project will finally see the screen with Gerald’S Game.
Netflix announced Gerald’S Game will be helmed by Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin Of Evil, Oculus). It will star Carla Gugino (San Andreas, Watchmen) and Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek Into Darkness).
The script is adapted by Flanagan and Jeff Howard (I Know What You Did Last Summer), which is based off the 1992 Stephen King suspense novel.
Here’s the synopsis:
Gerald’S Game follows Gerald and Jessie Burlingame, who have gone to their summer home on a warm weekday in October for a romantic interlude. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie tires of her husband’s games, until things take an unexpectedly tragic turn. Still handcuffed, she is trapped and along. Painful memories from her childhood bedevil her. Her only company is a hungry stray dog and the voices that populate her mind. As night comes,...

Iceland might seem like an ideal setting for a Darren Aronofsky movie — it’s where he shot “Noah,” after all — but that’s not why he came to the country this month. Instead, he was in town to receive the Creative Excellence award from the Reykjavík Film Festival. The award was presented at Bessastaðir, the presidential residency where the newly elected Guðni Th. Jóhannesson resides. But before the Golden Puffin was presented, the writer, poet and environmental activist Andri Snær Magnason delivered a short speech in Aronofsky’s honor. Ironically, Andri Snær recently lost to Guðni in the presidential election. Say what you will about Aronofsky’s films, but at least they have been able to bridge the gap between the two opponents.

Nearly a year after the release of “Crimson Peak”, Guillermo del Toro is officially at work on his next film. Stranger Things and more great series should be one and done.
In the ever-shrinking distinction between movies and television, series like Stranger Things can seem like a very long feature rather than an episodic show. Especially when they’re dumped all at once via Netflix, the individual parts add together to form a whole in our binge-watching minds. I have a favorite episode of Stranger Things — part three, “Holly, Jolly” — but it’s mostly just that because its climax was the point where I decided I had to keep going nonstop with my investment in the series. I recognize that it’s basically just the ending of the first act of a 400-minute movie, the point in the narrative where we’re meant to be fully drawn in.
If the eight-episode first season of Stranger Things is a singular work, like a feature film, then a second season would be like a movie sequel. And...

Stranger Things, Netflix’s new sci-fi horror series is made by and for our kind of people. Movie nerds Matt and Ross Duffer have translated their love of classic Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Wes Craven and Stephen King pictures into an eight-part drama that feels as comfortable as sinking into your favourite chair.
Set in 1983 Indiana, Stranger Things is the story of a boy’s disappearance, odd goings-on at a local government facility and the mystery arrival of a peculiar little girl. With a very likeable young cast (think Freaks & Geeks if Sam, Bill and Neil had to deal with real monsters, not just the high school variety) and Winona Ryder, David Harbour and Matthew Modine capably leading the grown-ups,...

Looking like a long-lost onscreen adventure from the decade of boom boxes and arcade games, Netflix’s series Stranger Things (coming out on July 15th) is teased in a new trailer that has an atmosphere akin to a Stephen King story or Steven Spielberg film.

As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.
Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Cara Buono, Charlie Heaton, and Matthew Modine.
Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer (Wayward Pines, Hidden) serve as writer, directors and co-showrunners of the series, and are executive producers along with Shawn Levy and...

From a pop culture perspective, private detectives stand for all that’s memorable about film noir. The indifference, the wittiness, and the moral ambiguity that define each urban knight has since become the stuff of parodied legend. We’re talking about the mediators between the crooks and the cops, the embodiment of back alley grayness that’s so tough to pin down. P.I.’s could cooperate with the law if needed, but they could just as soon do business with the bad guys for the right price. To a certain extent, that is – shamus work has always attracted the ignored and the ethical. The Wild West has mythical men with no name, The Asphalt Jungle has names with investigating licenses attached to them. Instead of a poncho and a ten gallon hat, they’re provided a fedora and trench coat.

Is J.J. Abrams a character from one of his own shows or movies?
He must be a being from another dimension, capable of mysterious time-jumping feats. How else do you explain his prolific output? While he's busy directing or producing movies like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and next month's "10 Cloverfield Lane," he's also overseeing new TV series -- three of them due this year, including a mini-series adaptation of Stephen King's time-travel novel "11.22.63," debuting Feb. 15 on Hulu.
For all his vaunted reputation as the king of fanboy epics with complicated mythologies (not to mention real-world dramas of ordinary people with soap-opera-complicated lives), Abrams has had a surprisingly mixed track record on TV. About half of his shows have become long-running critical and popular successes, and half have barely lasted a season. Still, all of his shows are pretty fascinating, whether they deal with arcane conspiracies or bad haircuts.

While at the Winter TCA tour to promote the new Hulu adaptation of Stephen King's 11.22.63, director J.J. Abrams continued to field questions about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Namely, Abrams was asked whether he think the film should receive consideration at the Oscars. "There are certain people that I know deserve it definitely and it would be wonderful if they got it. I feel like the gift of working on that film is such that I don’t need any further validation than the movie being out there and people liking the movie. There are people that I will be disappointed if they don’t get nominated because I think that the work they did was really exemplary."' When pressed to name who those individuals are that he thinks deserve nominations, Abrams declined to go into detail. Abrams could be referring to members of The Force Awakens cast (Daisey Ridley,...

This week, Guillermo del Toro’s gothic-horror-romance Crimson Peak will haunt movie theaters across the land. It joins the unique crowd of del Toro projects that makes it to the screen instead of vanishing into development oblivion. Del Toro is always cooking something up, and his name is frequently being thrown around for various films that never quite materialize: he’s been working on-again/off-again on a Haunted Mansion film; then there’s the DC Comics adaptation Justice League Dark. Pacific Rim 2 keeps jumping back and forth between being in development and being put on hold. The filmmaker was even going to direct the first of The Hobbit films before things changed, and we ended up with a bloated trilogy filled with nonsense. But the holy grail of unmade Guillermo del Toro films is his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.

Mexican maestro Guillermo Del Toro is making a much-anticipated return to the genre he helped define in recent years with Crimson Peak. Following his riotous rock-’em, sock-’em robot affair Pacific Rim, the visionary craftsman has opted to reimagine the lurking horrors of the haunted house; perhaps something deemed cliched on paper, but you just know that in these methodical hands the results will be anything but.
Featuring a dynamic central trio in Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, a release date the perfectly builds towards the Halloween festivities, and a wealth of international support, to say Crimson Peak should sit highly on your must-see list is a vast understatement.

★★★☆☆ Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow's unpretentious documentary De Palma (2015) reveals a clear-sighted and fascinating director, who often seems as bemused by the vagaries and inconsistencies in his own career as everyone else. Brian De Palma was initially seen as the most talented of the Young Turks who came to prominence in the seventies. Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg all deferred to him and his fierce intelligence. However, De Palma was to be left struggling in their wake as they all went on to accrue massive commercial and critical success while his own career, despite the occasional peak, suffered from troughs of ever-deeper despond.
The directors eschews the conventional prologue to such 'Extended Features' fare that would involve a chorus of praise from De Palma's peers, perhaps to forestall those obvious comparisons. It's consistent with his no-frills approach, which has De Palma sitting down...

Crimson Peak is pretty high on my list of most anticipated films of the year. This trailer does myself or anyone who has the same feelings any favors. Boasting a quote from Stephen King and featuring one of the creepiest yet most elegant houses I have seen, Crimson Peak makes me wish October was only a month away. Maybe if I’m lucky, it will show at Fantastic Fest.
There is also an International Trailer that is different from the one shown above. Let’s throw that in here as well.

This past weekend the King and Prince of horror, Stephen King and his son Joe Hill, were treated to a special preview screening of Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak. For the public at large, the movie is still many months away from release, but that hasn’t stopped Legendary from pushing out the marketing. In promotional materials it has been described as a “haunting gothic horror”, and by the looks of its first trailer (see above) that description is a perfect fit.

Sound on Sight: What got you interested in the comics medium? What was the first comic that you remember reading?
Jacob Semahn: The first comic I ever read was Infinity War #1. I picked it up at 7/11 when I was a kid. I think I might have been nine,...

Toronto, On. I’m back! It’s been a long time and I apologise for that, moving house turned out to be a far far longer process than I anticipated or had been led to believe. Three weeks turned into six, six weeks turned into three months and now here we are.

Following last week’s first wave of programming announcements, the Fantasia International Film Festival has revealed its second wave of programming, which includes a screening of Ju-On: The Beginning of the End and a 40th anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, where Tobe Hooper will be presented with a lifetime achievement award:
“Official Closing Film – Abel Ferrara’s Welcome To New York
Fantasia will close its 2014 edition with the North American Premiere of Abel Ferrara’s Welcome To New York, the controversial latest from the legendary filmmaker behind such landmarks as Bad Lieutenant, King Of New York, New Rose Hotel and the recently re-released Ms 45.
Welcome To New York is loosely based on the Dsk scandal and stars the iconic Gérard Depardieu in one of the bravest performances of his career. Co-starring is the equally sensational Jacqueline Bisset.
