I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)
Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.

There are just under 29 weeks between now and the 2014 Academy Awards, but that doesn't mean it's too early to start speculating about next year's biggest races. Case in point: GoldDerby.com editor Tom O'Neil reports that Meryl Streep will be eligible for Best Supporting Actress at next year's Oscars ceremony for her role in "August: Osage County." That decision puts Streep in direct competition with Oprah Winfrey, who has already earned awards buzz for her showy role in "Lee Daniels' The Butler."
The twist of this shift is that Streep's role in "August: Osage County" is of the leading variety. As O'Neil notes, Streep plays Violet Weston in John Wells' adaptation of Tracy Letts' award-winning play, a part that won Broadway star Deanna Dunagan Best Actress at the Tony Awards.

Ricky Gervais would host the 2014 Oscars, but only if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would agree to his conditions.
"I doubt the job offer would come without some strings attached," Gervais told GoldDerby.com editor Tom O'Neil when asked about the prestigious Oscars host gig. "The worst string being, handing in my credentials as a comedian in favor of a family entertainer. We have to be able to poke fun at society without favoring any part of it because we are beholden to someone. And it's a fine line between feeling like you've sold your soul and feeling like you're ruining someone's party. It would be very temping though, I must admit."
Gervais told O'Neil that he would be "incredibly flattered" if asked to host the 86th annual Academy Awards. "It would be a thrill and an honor," he added. As of now, no one has been announced...

By Tom O'Neil, GoldDerby.com "Les Miserables" is the early frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars, according to the experts polled by Gold Derby, and it may even end up setting two historic records. Pundits predict the Tom Hooper-directed flick will win Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), Art Direction, Best Song ("Suddenly") and Sound Mixing. Overall, expect "Les Mis" to reap 12 to 16 bids. Currently, the record is 14 held by "All About Eve" (1950) and "Titanic" (1997). If "Les Mis" beats "Lincoln" to reap the most noms this year, that'll be an encouraging sign since the movie with the most nominations wins Best Picture more than two-thirds of the time. "Les Miserables" could also set a record for most acting bids in one film. That distinction is currently shared by nine flicks that reaped five: "All About Eve" (1950), "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967), "From Here to Eternity" (1953), "Godfather, Part II" (1974), "Mrs. Miniver" (1942), "Network...

Christian Bale could be moving up because Leonardo DiCaprio is moving out. That's one of the possible Oscar-season implications in the unexpected retreat of DiCaprio's The Great Gatsby from its planned Christmas Day release. "It's a major shakeup," veteran awards-show watcher Tom O'Neil of GoldDerby.com said Monday. There was no official explanation for the moving of Gatsby from December to an unspecified summer 2013 date, but Scott Feinberg, lead awards-season blogger and analyst for the Hollywood Reporter, saw potential box-office benefits—and potential Oscar pitfalls. The summer launch could mean the film, lavish and 3-D though it may be, gets buried, Feinberg said,...

Christopher Nolan fans waiting for their beloved auteur's epic Batman trilogy to get some Academy love could finally be rewarded come Oscar time.
"The Dark Knight Rises" has a fabulous shot at scoring a Best Picture nod next February. While it's too early in the year to call the film a shoo-in, the final installment in Nolan's Caped Crusader reboot has all the prestige elements necessary (not to mention a unique history with the Academy) to snag more than just the usual list of technical nominations: critical appeal, an award-winning cast, dazzling cinematography and serious themes that elevate it far above the average superhero adventure.
As any of Nolan's army of hard-core fans can tell you, the Academy snubbed "The Dark Knight" for Best Picture (and Best Director) in 2009, causing a frenzy of outrage that ultimately led to the expansion from five to 10 possible nominees. Although "The Dark Knight" did...

Our own Tom O'Neil plays Oscar poker with Sasha Stone and Jeffrey Wells: "15 hours ago Awards Daily's Sasha Stone, Goldderby.com's Tom O'Neil and I kicked the 2012 Oscar ball around. Our consensus: 'Les Miserables,' 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' and 'Lincoln' in the Best Picture lead. And yet Tom and Sasha delivered some Lincoln pushback based on two factors: (a) Daniel Day-Lewis's Lincoln might be too quirky or extreme in some way, and (b) director Steven Spielberg might Spielberg-ize it -- he might not be able to muster the discipline to 'get out of the way' and just let the material play on its own terms." Hollywood Elsewhere Nick Offerman and Kerry Washington will announce the Emmy nominees: "Ron Swanson and Olivia Pope are teaming up. 'Parks and Recreation‘s' Nick Offerman and 'Scandal‘s' Kerry Washington will announce the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy nominations on Thursday,...

Indiewire makes its 2012 Emmy predictions: "The nominations have the potential to represent a extremely strong season of television, from drama ('Breaking Bad,' 'Homeland') to comedy ('Parks and Recreation,' 'Modern Family') to television movies and miniseries ('Game Change,' 'Great Expectations'), though keep in mind the Emmys' rather tragic history in handing out undeserving or sometimes downright bizarre nominations (and snubbing of the likes of 'The Wire')." Indiewire After "The Artist" and "Hugo," the next Oscars could bring us back to the past again: "... just like the newly crowned best-picture winner, 'The Artist,' the films with the most potential for next year's Oscar contention take moviegoers back to the past. The voters love big, recognizable faces in adapted works, says Tom O'Neil of GoldDerby.com, whether it's mining real life or literature. So one of...

Steven Spielberg's terrorist drama Munich and Ang Lee's controversial Brokeback Mountain have emerged as the front runners for Best Film at the 2006 Oscars, in the latest release from top movie industry odds site GoldDerby.com. Site editor Tom O'Neil, a top US critic and awards expert, suggests the two epics will compete with war film Jarhead, George Clooney's turn in Syriana and Memoirs Of A Geisha for the top Academy Award. But O'Neil is convinced it will be Spielberg's movie - about the hunt for the killers of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics - that will claim the big prize. He says, "It's the lead pony in this upcoming Oscar derby." Meanwhile, O'Neil and his online critics consortium, favor Tommy Lee Jones to beat Jake Gyllenhaal (Jarhead), Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Joaquin Phoenix's turn as Johnny Cash (Walk The Line) to the Best Actor prize for his role in Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada. GoldDerby.com's experts also predict Charlize Theron will be up for her second Best Actress Academy Award for her role of a victimized miner in North Country. Theron will compete with Judi Dench (Mrs. Henderson Presents), Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman (Transamerica), Diane Keaton (The Family Stone) and Ziyi Zhang (Memoirs Of A Geisha) for the award.

Eva Longoria and Nicolette Sheridan were snubbed by Emmy Awards judges because they play loose women on Desperate Housewives, according to US awards buff Tom O'Neil. O'Neil, who runs entertainment industry website GoldDerby.com, insists the Emmys panel often ignore "floozie" characters in hit shows because they're prudish. And he's certain that's why Sheridan and Longoria were left off the list this year. He says, "All three of the other Housewives got nominated. The two who got slapped have one thing in common - they play hip-wiggling tarts with loosey-goosey morals. Emmy voters may be regarded as typical Hollywood hedonists, but, in fact, they're older TV industry veterans who can often act like prudish snobs. Look at Heather Locklear, who was nominated six times for Golden Globes, but never earned a bid at the Emmys for Melrose Place or Spin City. And the only cast member of Frasier who was never nominated was Peri Gilpin, whose character, Roz, was accused of bedding everyone at Frasier's radio station."...

An untitled Steven Spielberg movie about the 1972 Munich, Germany Olympics has emerged as the mid-year frontrunner to land a Best Picture Oscar in 2006, according to America's top critics. The experts who write for Internet site GoldDerby.com insist the five films which will be in contention for the Academy Award next year have all yet to be released. And Spielberg's new film, about the massacre of Israeli athletes (currently known as Untitled 1972 Munich Olympics Project), which the movie mogul started filming earlier this week, leads the pack. The other films the GoldDerby.com reviewers feel sure will be nominated early next year are Jarhead, Memoirs of a Geisha, Goodnight, and Good Luck and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Website editor Tom O'Neil says, "Award voters love real stories, especially when they're important ones about persecution told by Spielberg - Schindler's List reigns as the only film in modern history to win Best Picture from every major awards group." Spielberg is expected to shoot the movie throughout the summer and hopes to release it at Christmas. O'Neil also likes Sam Mendes' new movie Jarhead as an Oscar contender: "Since it's about the disillusionment of a US Marine during the first Gulf war, it'll have obvious impact on Americans struggling now with doubts or worries about the current involvement in Iraq."...
