In the summer of 1996, the World Wrestling Federation held its annual King of the Ring tournament. After weeks of matches, the semis and finals were set for June 23rd, 1996, with Stone Cold Steve Austin facing Jake “The Snake” Roberts for the crown later in the night. Roberts, then known for working from a Christian angle, would cut a promo before the match doing just that. Just before Austin took the ring and pinned Roberts, he was tipped about the promo’s contents.
After the five-minute match, Austin stood next to the same man who tipped him off, Michael Hayes. And it was there that a legend and a catchphrase were born, and an entire industry was born again. With a mouth full of blood, Stone Cold Steve Austin told his defeated opponent: “You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere!

No need to stare at the yule log all December — though the TV midseason is typically as bare as a tree in winter, this year's end-of-year lineup is surprisingly robust. Disney+'s conjured up a new take on Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians books, while Peacock has brought Adrian Monk out of self-isolation for one Last Case.
Mysteries abound this month, as Mandy Moore meets Dr. Death in Season 2 of that anthology series and Paramount+ tries its hand at cult docuseries with Born in Synanon. There's plenty of lighter fare, too, thanks to the final season of Letterkenny and Netflix's latest snappy YA adaptation. And it all starts with a Cary Grant movie turned biodrama making its Stateside debut.

It may seem hard to believe, but the Insidious franchise is getting long in the tooth! The first Insidious movie was released all the way back in 2010, kickstarting an unlikely string of movies under the watchful eye of Saw horror duo Leigh Whannell and James Wan.
At first, the franchise focused on the Lambert family, whose move to a new home coincided with their son Dalton falling into a mysterious coma. They soon found out that it wasn’t their home that was haunted, but their family. Thanks to the Lamberts’ ability to astral project their consciousnesses, they can access “The Further”, a purgatory dimension where they’re at risk of attracting restless spirits, demonic and otherwise.

A headache-inducing episode of Loki gets underway in the 1800s this week, as Ravonna Renslayer finally pops up on the Sacred Timeline with Miss Minutes in tow. He Who Remains’ promise in the season one finale – that if Sylvie killed him he’d just end up right back on top – seems to hinge on a plan to kickstart a kind of causal loop, where a past variant receives a copy of Ob’s Tva guidebook and is inspired to create all manner of technological inventions, including a rough version of the temporal loom.
There are positives and negatives to this trip back in time. It’s great to have Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Tara Strong back as the ruthless Renslayer and Miss Minutes respectively. The pair are dynamite together here, and I’m still fully able to suspend my disbelief and buy into the talking animated clock...

Exclusive: Mandy Moore (Dr. Death) and Kumail Nanjiani (Welcome to Chippendales) have closed deals to star in Thread: An Insidious Tale, a new film in the Insidious universe from Screen Gems, Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
While Thread is the sixth installment in the Insidious horror franchise, examining everyday people caught up with demonic entities, it’s an offshoot project, rather than a continuation of the current series. The story here is that of a husband and wife (Nanjiani and Moore) who enlist the help of a spell to travel back in time, such that they can prevent the death of their young daughter. The consequences, of course, prove to be severe.
The first four films in the franchise, launched in 2010, grossed over $542M in total, with fifth chapter Insidious: The Red Door coming up via release by Sony on July 7th. On board to direct Thread: An Insidious Tale,...

One of the more fun challenges for any writer must be figuring out the narrowest possible scope to capture the broadest possible moment in history. Take Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City,” for example. The recently un-greenlit series remains a Hollywood favorite because Larson used a lurid series of events – the rise and fall of serial killer H.H. Holmes – as a window into turn-of-the-century America and the rising tide of modernity.

"Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir this show's blood." Hulu has decided to walk away from "Devil in the White City" -- the series adaptation of Erik Larson's 2003 non-fiction historical novel -- after developing it with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio for over two-and-a-half years. Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter all brought word of the new development at the same time. Their sources say that the show's producers, ABC Signature and Paramount Television Studios, are still committed to the project and will be shopping "Devil in the White City" around to other platforms, in the hopes of finding a new home. But as of now, the series is more or less dead.

The series adaptation of “The Devil in the White City” is no longer moving forward at Hulu, Variety has learned.
The series had originally been ordered to series at the streamer in August 2022 after originally being put into development there in 2019. At the time it was ordered, Keanu Reeves was attached to star in one of the lead roles with Todd Field onboard to direct.
However, Variety exclusively reported that Field had dropped out of the show in October, with Reeves also exiting. According to sources, Reeves had signed on to the series due in part to Field’s involvement, but left the show once Field did.

That’s why we’ve decided to rank the 10 best major horror games of 2022, as even the most devoted of horror hounds might need a little help keeping up with the bountiful harvest of scary media from this past year. And while this is a ranked list, I’d argue that every single title here deserves a playthrough – so remember that even our last placed entry is still worth checking out!
As usual, we’ll be following a couple of rules.

The series adaptation of Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction is on the way from Paramount+, and Entertainment Weekly has just shared the very first image from the series this week.
Lizzy Caplan (“Castle Rock”) is starring as female lead Alex Forrest, with Joshua Jackson (“Dr. Death”) playing Dan Gallagher. Check out your first look at the duo below.
“In the film, Alex is the villain of the story, and Dan is the hero and there is no gray area,” Caplan tells Entertainment Weekly in their preview piece. “Now, audiences have changed so much, we are no longer primed to believe in this villainous woman story. She’s clearly mentally ill and that’s not something that is really touched upon at all in the movie.”
Amanda Peet (“The Chair”) and Dee Wallace (Cujo, The Lords of Salem) will also star.

Supermassive Games has positioned itself as the face of choice-based survival-horror. Since its 2015 smash-hit, Until Dawn, the studio has teetered the line of triumphs and mishaps with its Dark Pictures Anthology, as well as Until Dawn’s spiritual successor, The Quarry. The games are essentially horror movies where you’re placed at the helm of deciding who lives and who dies–a formula that has been explored in other games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead or Dontnod’s Vampyr. The first three entries of The Dark Pictures Anthology have been divisive: while praised in many ways, they’ve also each carried unique flaws as well. The latest entry, The Devil In Me, which is dubbed the “season one finale” of the anthology, is certainly an anthology highlight; however, it has some quirks of its own that can’t be overlooked.

Most protagonists on medical dramas are modern-day heroes. And then there are the surgeons on Dr. Death. The first season of both the Peacock series and the Wondery podcast of the same name told the story of Christopher Duntsch, a former neurosurgeon now serving a life sentence for botched surgeries that left more than 30 patients maimed or dead. And the TV show’s second season, announced earlier this month, will cover the podcast’s third, with Edgar Ramirez playing Paolo Macchiarini, and This Is Us star Mandy Moore playing Benita Alexander, an investigative journalist who falls into a whirlwind romance with the doctor. According to The New York Times, Macchiarini is an Italian surgeon who was found criminally liable this June for causing felony bodily injury to a Turkish woman named Yesim Cetir, a patient who had received one of his 3D-printed windpipes and later died. Macchiarini was also charged...

So we’ve already heard about Jessie Buckley‘s Kate Wilder from The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me, but what about everyone else? Bandai Namco has remedied that with a brand new trailer for The Devil in Me that introduces the other members of Wilder’s film crew.
Alongside Kate Wilder, the new trailer introduces Charlie Lonnit (Paul Kaye), Mark Nestor (Fehinti Balogun), Jamie Tiergan (Gloria Obianyo), and Erin Keeman (Nikki Patel) of Lonnit Entertainment. The group are caught in the same deadly game of cat and mouse as Kate Wilder in the H. H. Holmes murder castle. As with Kate, their fate is in your hands. And as the trailer hints, if you make the wrong move, things turn out quite badly for that particular member.
As if teasing the potential demises of our Wilder and her crew wasn’t enough, the trailer also gives us a...

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me is the fourth installment of Supermassive Games’ hit anthology series, and is referred to as the “season one finale” of the batch. In a lot of ways, its premise is the most traditional of the anthology: a group of five big personalities are cryptically invited by a mysterious person to stay in a creepy hotel in the middle of nowhere. And to up the ante, the hotel is replicated to match the site of serial killer Hh Holmes’ “Murder Castle”…what could go wrong?
The classic horror formula is there, which is no surprise given that Game Director Tom Heaton has previously mentioned that classics like The Shining and Halloween (1978) have heavily inspired the Supermassive team this time around. It's looking a bit less likely that Hulu will be adapting Erik Larson's 2003 novel "The Devil in the White City," after all. Variety reports that the adaptation has lost its main director, Todd Field, mere days after Keanu Reeves left the project. What in tarnation is going on?
The answer to that question is still unknown. According to Variety's anonymous source, Hulu is now trying to recruit a new director for the buzzy series alongside a new lead actor. Reeves was slated to play Daniel H. Burnham, a real-life architect who gets caught up in the frantic energy of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair as a serial killer roams the nearby streets. Much like Field's sudden departure, it is unknown why the actor dropped out, although it is quite odd that both the lead and the show's director left the project around the same time.

After over a decade in development, it looked like Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese’s long-gestating television adaptation of Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City” was finally starting to take shape. The series, which had been in the works at Hulu since 2019, announced that Keanu Reeves was set to play legendary Chicago World’s Fair architect Daniel H. Burnham, with “TÁR” director Todd Field executive producing and directing all episodes.
But the project soon started falling apart, with Reeves exiting the series last week. Now, the project has been hit with another creative blow, as Variety first reported that Field has now dropped out as well. It would have marked the continuation of a triumphant comeback for Field, who has been receiving glowing reviews on the festival circuit for “TÁR,” his first feature film since 2006’s “Little Children.”

Hulu’s Devil in the White City continues to fall apart.
Days after leading man Keanu Reeves departed the limited series from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, director Todd Field has also parted ways with the project.
Sources say Disney-owned streamer Hulu is now searching for a new star as well as a new helmer for Devil in the White City, which has been in various stages of development for more than a decade.
Reps for Hulu declined comment.
Field has recently been garnering awards season attention for writing and directing Tar, starring Cate Blanchett.
The show has been in the works for more than a decade, including a stint when it was envisioned as a feature film, with Sam Shaw (Hulu’s Castle Rock) on board as writer, showrunner and exec producer. DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner, Jennifer Davisson, exec produce alongside Scorsese.

In another blow to Hulu’s series adaptation of “The Devil in the White City,” Todd Field has exited the project on which he was to serve as director and executive producer, Variety has learned exclusively.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the search is now on for a new director. News of Field’s departure from the show comes just days after Variety also exclusively reported that series star Keanu Reeves had bowed out as well.
Field most recently wrote and directed the Cate Blanchett-led drama feature “Tár,” which debuted at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival. The film received rave reviews upon its debut and is being touted as an early Oscar contender. In his review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman wrote, “The movie is breathtaking — in its drama, its high-crafted innovation, its vision. It’s a ruthless but intimate tale of art, lust, obsession, and power.

"The Devil in the White City" seems to have lost its architect in what might be the worst TV news we've heard in weeks. According to Variety, Keanu Reeves has exited the long-gestating adaptation of Erik Larson's popular book, where he was set to play real-life Chicago World's Fair designer Daniel H. Burnham. His turn as the historic architect would have marked Reeves' first live-action major American TV role.
The adaptation of "The Devil in the White City" has been plagued by changes and interruptions since it first began its path to production in 2010. In 2015, Martin Scorsese boarded the project with plans to direct, but in 2021, news...

Sources say the Disney-backed streamer is already searching for a replacement star to lead the drama, which has been in various stages of development for more than a decade. Reps for Hulu and Reeves declined to comment.
Hulu officially ordered Devil in the White City in early August, with Reeves officially closing a deal to star in the series that would have marked his largest TV commitment to date.
The show has been in the works for more than a decade, including a stint when it was envisioned as a feature film, with Sam Shaw (Hulu’s Castle Rock) on board as writer, showrunner and exec producer. DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner,...

Focus Features has released the latest trailer for Cate Blanchett’s latest, TÁR, directed by the great–and infrequent director–Todd Field.
TÁR “examines the changing nature of power, its impact and durability in our modern world.” Well, that’s awfully vague…In TÁR, Cate Blanchett stars as a renowned composer on the verge of completing what could be her masterpiece. As suggested in the trailer, her struggle with time as both a conductor and an aging woman prove to take a physical and psychological toll.
Cate Blanchett’s performance in Todd Field’s TÁR seems prime for an Oscar nomination. This wouldn’t be much of a surprise, considering Blanchett has seven nods and two wins already (for Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine). Director Todd Field, too, has a history of leading his performers to Oscar nominations.
That history, granted, is brief. Todd...
