My So-Called High School Rank
HBO Original documentary film My So-called High School Rank, produced and directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (HBO’s “Marathon: The Patriots Day Bombing”), debuts Tuesday, November 29 (9:00-10:45 p.m. Et/Pt) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
My So-called High School Rank chronicles the creation of a musical theater production at Granite Bay High School in Sacramento, CA, inspired by students’ stories of the constant pressures to achieve a top-rank in every part of their lives to get ahead in today’s fierce college admissions process.
In an uncanny case of art anticipating real life, Granite Bay’s musical “Ranked” was in the works weeks before Rick Singer and the “Varsity Blues” scandal made headlines in 2019. The play’s apt timing and subject matter speak to a culture where many students feel driven to succeed at any cost.

Ketanji Brown Jackson’s June 30 swearing-in as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court was historic and inspiring. While her ascendance just six days after the court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade struck many as ironic and dispiriting, it should also serve as a powerful reminder that in Washington, D.C., as well as in Hollywood, the battle for equity is often fought behind closed doors.
In 2018, I produced a documentary called Reversing Roe that explored the perilous state of reproductive rights in America. I first started pitching the project nearly a decade ago, inspired by Planned Parenthood’s first 100 years. The team behind the Lifetime documentary series Surviving Jeffrey Epstein is turning its attention to the music industry.
Anne Sundberg and Ricki Stern are taking on the Dorothy Carvello expose Anything for a Hit as their next project. Stern and Sundberg’s Break Thru Films will team up on the documentary series project with One Foot Forward Entertainment, the New York Post reported.
Carvello, the first female A&r talent scout for Atlantic Records who began as the legendary Ahmet Ertegun’s secretary at the label, published her dishy book in 2018.
“The series will feature key interviews with major label executives and artists whose stories illustrate the power and sexual dynamics that are tied to success in the music world,” said a statement from the producers. “Carvello’s singular perspective on the music industry — as a woman and as a key insider at a major label — offers a powerful lens...

In the sixth episode of Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer’s docuseries “The Vow,” Sarah Edmondson, a whistleblower who was once in the inner-circle of Nxivm and also a part of its master-slave subgroup Dos, is asked outright if she is a victim. Although she answers quickly in the affirmative, she also makes it clear that she made choices during her time working with the organization. Some of these choices simply kept her involved, while others were direct recruitment of other young women. To some, this may paint her in the colors of someone more culpable than coerced.
But the truth is much more complicated. And what Noujaim and Amer endeavor to do with their nine-part HBO docuseries is peel back the layers of the psychology of not only the women who found themselves in this organization that purported to be one of self-improvement, but also of its founder and high-ranking officials,...

On Aug. 9 and Aug. 10, Lifetime will air its new docuseries Surviving Jeffrey Epstein. Those airdates are significant, as Epstein, the disgraced financier and accused sex offender, was found dead in his jail cell on Aug. 10, 2019. And this story, like the network's hit Surviving R. Kelly before it, focuses on those who survived the sexual assaults perpetrated by Epstein and those in his inner circle. The most prominent figure in his inner circle? Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former girlfriend accused of grooming women, who was arrested on July 2.
Bob Friedman, one of the series's executive producers, told journalists covering this summer's all-virtual Television Critics Association press tour that it was important to air this two-night, four-hour event on the anniversary of Epstein's demise - especially because "the story that we've told has been pretty much in the survivors' own words."

Lifetime was always keen for its Surviving Jeffrey Epstein docu-series, which looks at the case of the convicted felon through the eyes of the victims, to air around the one year anniversary of his death.
What the network and the filmmakers, Anne Sundberg and Ricki Stern, didn’t expect was that his alleged co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell would be arrested a month before its premiere.
This forced the team, which included producers Bungalow Media + Entertainment, to refocus the fourth hour of the series, which will air across two nights on August 9 and 10, to include the latest developments.
“It was crazy timing as we were coming to the finish line as the arrest happened. We had a different form of conclusion,” said Sundberg. “This story is not over.”

Lifetime released the first trailer for the next iteration of its “Surviving” docuseries, “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein,” promising to expose new secrets from some of the women who say they were abused by him.
The four-hour doc investigates the billionaire New York financier who was accused of using his connections to the rich and famous to shield his predatory and abusive behavior with young girls. Featuring women who describe how Epstein lured underaged girls, the doc delves into the reality the survivors must now face in the wake of Epstein’s suicide behind bars.
The one-minute trailer gives a brief look at the experiences some women say they had at the hands of Epstein. One describes being “a human baton, passed from one person to another,” while another woman talks of being “groomed” to be a “personal sex slave.” A third survivor added: “The more I kept trying to resist, the more fun he was having.

Lifetime is making a followup documentary to “Surviving R. Kelly,” as well a new docuseries on Jeffrey Epstein called “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein.”
“Surviving Jeffrey Epstein” will center on the billionaire New York financier, who was arrested earlier this month. He was charged with sex trafficking by federal prosecutors, who said that Epstein sexually abused dozens of underage girls and paid many of them to recruit others. He was denied bail last week.
Since Epstein’s arrest, Labor Secretary Alex Acosta resigned after defending the plea deal he struck with Epstein as a federal prosecutor. Over a decade ago, Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to soliciting a minor for prostitution. He served 13 months of an 18-month sentence and was released in 2009.

“Museo” (Vitagraph) led a slew of new specialized releases this week. The Mexican heist film starring Gael Garcia Bernal topped all other fresh titles. The fall season is already taking off with an astonishing 40 films opening theatrically this weekend, including at least six Sundance 2018 titles, two of which just played the Toronto International Film Festival.
And to confuse audiences even more, even more movies were available on home-viewing platforms as well as theaters, from the Nicolas Cage cult film “Mandy” to three films directed by established female directors. Netflix opened Nicole Holofcener’s suburban drama “The Land of Steady Habits” and Ricki Sundberg and Anne Sundberg’s timely documentary “Reversing Roe” on Friday after their Tiff premieres; and Amma Asante followed two Fox Searchlight releases with controversial Nazi Germany romance thriller “Where Hands Touch” (Vertical), which played in over 100 theaters with an estimated gross of under $70,000 while also streaming.

Like any abortion documentary worth the time to watch, Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg’s “Reversing Roe” doesn’t explicitly argue for or against a woman’s right to choose. And while there’s little doubt that Stern and Sundberg could make a persuasive case for reproductive rights, as several interview subjects do, it’s only so valuable to preach to the choir — especially when a film is released into the apolitical cyberspace of Netflix rather than a handful of arthouse theaters in America’s largest and most liberal cities.
Ultimately, “Reversing Roe” is a productive contribution to its ever-growing genre because it sharply dissects the process by which abortion soured from a private medical issue to a public political one. If witnessing the cynical opportunism with which Jerry Falwell stirred evangelical Christians into a Republican movement, or watching the Operation Truth videos in which fundamentalist zealots try to impose their religious beliefs,...

Patrick Downes and Jessica Kensky had only been married for seven months when they headed to the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, to cheer on the runners.
But then two homemade bombs exploded, killing three and wounding countless others at the race — including Downes and Kensky, who have had “30 to 40” surgeries on their limbs (and even their ears, which were ruptured in the explosions).
“The bombing did not leave one part of our lives untouched,” Kensky tells People.
“When you get married, you’re on this high,” she says. “You feel unstoppable. You have so many hopes and dreams and goals.

Across the world’s major cities, marathons hold a special resonance with people as local communities unite – be they runners participating in the event or bystanders yelling on their support – to overcome the physical, mental and emotional toil that comes with hand-in-hand with pounding the pavements for 26.2 miles.
Three years ago, in what was supposed to be a communal day to remember, a terrorist attacked rocked the city of Boston killing six and leaving hundreds of people – both runners and those supporters lining the sidewalks – badly injured. October is stacked with some of the year’s best films, both in wide release and limited, many slowly expanding through November, and we have a record-setting 20 recommendations for the month. The conclusion of Tiff and Venice also brought a batch of worthwhile premieres, some of which one will be able to see this month.
To note, after limited September debuts, the recommended Sicario and The Walk will both be opening wide on October 2nd and 9th, respectively. There’s also a few notable releases we weren’t fans of, including Love (10/30) and Truth (10/16). Then there’s some on our radar that would make for worthwhile matinees: Sherpa (10/2), (T)error (10/7), The Final Girls (10/9), Meadowland (10/16) and Rock the Kasbah (10/23). We should also make a note that Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new short film Junun will start streaming at midnight on October 9th at Mubi.

Chicago rapper Che "Rhymefest" Smith co-wrote the Oscar-winning song "Glory" from Selma, has won Grammys and met with U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron to discuss gun violence. But the recently released documentary In My Father's House, directed by Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work), eschews hip-hop hagiography and club-hopping excess to focus on the musician's search for his homeless dad, who abandoned the family when Smith was a child.

If an underdog could be said to exist in the contained world of baseball, it wouldn't be one particular team but rather a group of players viewed by many as flukes and by most of the baseball world as something of an unpredictable freakshow: knuckleball pitchers. Directors Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg's compelling documentary Knuckleball! tells the story of both the New York Mets' R.A. Dickey and the Boston Red Sox's Tim Wakefield and how they came into their own as knuckleball pitchers, but it maintains this unfortunately narrow view without ever really expounding on the physics behind the knuckleball or explaining what makes it such a devilish pitch to hit. It's insistence to just focus on the stories of modern baseball's two greatest knuckleballers creates a strong and poignant narrative, but it feels unfortunately stunted in its offerings for anyone who wants to know about the knuckleball...

I didn't go to Park City for the Sundance Film Festival this year. I know I'm missing lots of good movies, but on the other hand, it was 70 degrees in Austin yesterday, while Sundance festgoers are dealing with single-digit and even negative-number temperatures. I'm too delicate a flower for that kind of weather.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways in which we in Austin (or anywhere) can have a taste of the Sundance experience from the comfort of our homes. Before you enjoy the videos below, if you want an authentic Sundance experience you could crank up the air conditioning, put on some thermal underwear, and consume only power bars and coffee. If you want to simulate the press-and-industry experience, you might get a jerky friend to sit next to you and play with their smartphone the whole time, but I think that's going too far.

In the last year, New York Mets starting pitcher R.A. Dickey climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, released a memoir ("Wherever I Wind Up"), became the first pitcher in 24 years to throw consecutive one-hitters, was the focus of an acclaimed documentary, and, just last week, won the 2012 National League Cy Young award. The 38-year-old shows no signs of slowing down either: In 2013, Dickey will release a children's book, likely sign a lucrative contract (either with the Mets or another team), and possibly see his story honored by the Academy Awards. "Knuckleball!," the aforementioned documentary about Dickey and fellow knuckleballer and former Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield, is a potential Oscar contender in the Best Documentary category. Not bad for a pitcher who just two years ago was a roster filler for the Mets Aaa affiliate in Buffalo.

Can't anyone give the knuckleball some respect? Baseball's slowest pitch is often treated as a joke — there are precious few living pitchers brave enough to make it their specialty — but the art of throwing weird finally gets its close-up in the fittingly titled new documentary Knuckleball!, directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work). Knuckleball! follows Mets star pitcher R.A. Dickey and retired Red Sox icon Tim Wakefield through the 2011 season as they persist in throwing knuckleballs, despite the fact that even some of their team members think the style is a joke. Take a look at this exclusive clip to see more; the film is currently available on VOD and iTunes and just opened in New York and Boston.

With the summer fading and fall colors beginning to appear, America's greatest pasttime gears up for the post-season as the baseball playoffs are just weeks away. And what better way to gear up for the road to the World Series than with a documentary centered on one of the most curious corners of the game: the knuckleball. From directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg ("The Devil Came on Horseback," "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work") comes "Knuckleball," a documentary on the slowest, strangest and most unpredictable pitch in the game that only a select few are masters. The doc follows two players -- 37-year-old R.A. Dickey (New York Mets, now a 2012 All-Star) and 18-year veteran Tim Wakefield (now retired) -- chronicling their ups and downs during the 2011 season. The film also catches up with five living retired knuckleballers: Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, Charlie Hough, Wilbur Wood, Jim Bouton and Tom Candiotti.

Don't be fooled by the title: the new documentary "Knuckleball!" is about a lot more than the notoriously twisty pitch of the same name.
"For us it was really important that this film isn't just a sports film," "Knuckleball!" co-director Anne Sundberg told HuffPost Entertainment. "A lot of positive feedback we have gotten is audience members who are not necessarily the biggest baseball fans and find themselves drawn to and moved by the story."
Though it's tempting to think about baseball in terms of wins and losses, Sundberg and co-director Rick Stern ("Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work") found plot in a pitch, and two men whose careers have been defined by it: former Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Tim Wakefield and current New York Mets starter R.A.
