A year ago, Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) went into production in Louisiana, with Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival, Jermaine Fowler of The Blackening, and singer Charli Xcx making up the cast. We haven’t heard a release date for this one yet, but it did just take a major step forward: it has gotten its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. They have announced that the Faces of Death remake has received an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language and drug use.

It’s a brand new year, and Deep Cuts Rising is back to spotlight less talked about horror movies. The first installment of 2024 features selections reflecting the month of January.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature zombies, a killer New Year’s party and more.
Knife of Ice (1972)
Image: All but too late, Ida Galli (as Evelyn Stewart) spots the knife-wielding killer behind her in Knife of Ice.
Directed by Umberto Lenzi.
Giallo fans have designated both January and July as months for celebrating the genre. So it’s a great time to get acquainted with these stylish mysteries. Novices will naturally be drawn to the more popular and acclaimed filmmakers that gialli have to offer — Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci — but others like Umberto Lenzi shouldn’t be disregarded.

The Outlast Trials: The Murkoff Collections, a comic book tie-in to The Outlast Trials, had its first issue released last week. Now developer Red Barrels has released the second issue of the two-part digital comic book series written by J.T. Petty, the scriptwriter for both Outlast games and comics, and illustrated by Gmb Chomichuk.
For those not up on the series’ lore, the Murkoff Corporation uses science and cutting-edge psychotherapy to “promote liberty, prosperity, and the strength of free markets around the world.” The Murkoff Collections Department in particular searches for assets, subjects, and techniques potentially useful to the organization, especially in the buildup of the potentially revolutionary Sinyala Facility.
This second issue focuses on Phylis Futterman, aka Mother Gooseberry. Like the first issue’s Leland Coyle, Mother Gooseberry is an Ex-Pop, and one of the antagonists in The Outlast Trials. She is a disgraced, mentally unstable children’s show host suffering from psychosis.

Fans of Red Barrels’ The Outlast Trials now have some light reading while they wait on the next update for the Early Access game. Per ComicBook.com, fans can now check out the first issue of the comic book tie-in with The Outlast Trials: The Murkoff Collections.
Written by Jt Petty and illustrated by Gmb Chomichuk, The Outlast Trials: The Murkoff Collections focuses on Leland Coyle, the former policeman who was enlisted by the Murkoff Corporation as one of the Experimental Population or Ex-Pops. For those who haven’t played the game, the Ex-Pops are failed test subjects of the early stages of the Corporation experiments, and are one of the main antagonists in The Outlast Trials.
“I love comics that let you obsess over details, stuff like Matt Kindt and Alan Moore, where it feels as much like an investigation as a story,” says Petty. “Even in the Outlast video games,...

Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) is now filming in Louisiana, and Deadline reports that Jermaine Fowler of Sorry to Bother You, The Drop, Coming 2 America, and the upcoming horror comedy The Blackening has been cast in the movie. I never imagined I would someday be writing about a Faces of Death remake that has stars of well-known TV shows in its cast, and yet here we are. About two years ago, we heard that writer Isa Mazzei and director Daniel Goldhaber, the team that brought us the Netflix release Cam, had been hired to craft a remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) for Legendary Entertainment and producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford’s company Angry Films. A few weeks ago, Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria and Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things were cast in the remake. And now Deadline has broken the news that Josie Totah, who had a role in the recent Saved by the Bell revival, has also signed on to be in Faces of Death.

There’s something inherently terrifying about subterranean horror. Getting trapped underground creates a tense survival scenario thanks to various dangers. But what about what’s lurking in the dark? Survival horror with carnivorous creatures provides fertile ground for fear.
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is back with the brand new underground monster movie The Lair, which comes to theaters and on Digital and VOD on October 28, 2022.
In The Lair, “Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is shot down over Afghanistan and finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons – half human, half alien – are awakened.”
Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World) and Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) also star.
Charlotte Kirk co-wrote the screenplay with Neil Marshall.
In anticipation of Marshall’s return to the subterranean creature feature, we look back at eight horror movies that feature underground monsters.

Of all the horror films on the release schedule, perhaps one of the most intriguing and enigmatic is James Wan's Malignant. Previously slated to come out last year, like many movies, Malginant was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Warner Bros. has rescheduled the film for a theatrical and IMAX release on September 10th, along with a simultaneous HBO Max streaming release for 31 days.
Directed by Wan from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and J.T. Petty (based on a story idea by Wan and Ingrid Bisu), Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jake Abel, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Ingrid Bisu. The film is produced by Wan and Michael Clear.
Wan announced the new release date for Malignant on Instagram (see below), accompanied by a new image that teases the giallo-esque tone of the movie, which has been rated R for "strong horror violence and gruesome images,...

"This temple, it will make you sick." Screen Media Films has debuted the official trailer for the horror film titled Temple, directed by Michael Barrett, from a screenplay originally written by Simon Barrett (of You're Next, The Guest, Blair Witch) along with fellow horror filmmaker Jt Petty. The film is supposedly an homage to Japanese horror as it follows a group of Americans visiting Japan who decide to stay overnight at a haunted temple. Of course, they end up discovering this was a bad idea despite warnings from locals. The film stars Logan Huffman, Brandon Tyler Sklenar, and Natalia Warner. Oddly, screenwriter Simon Barrett has kind of disowned the film, explaining in an article on Medium, "I don’t know what that project is any more than you do." Now that we have some footage does it look any good? Not really. Take a look below. Here's the official trailer...

Brooklyn Animal Control is not being picked up right now by USA. However, the network has not given up on the series completely. The network has asked those involved to redevelop the series.
Deadline reported that Jt Petty and his team, which included David S. Goyer, will work on the series. It is based on a comic created by Petty.
Brooklyn Animal Control is meant to tell the story of a secret division of the NYPD that handles a group of werewolves that live in the borough of New York City. If it moves forward, the series “will examine city politics, immigrant communities, and families divided by ambition, secrecy, and tradition.”
Would you want to see this series on USA? Should the network give it a chance? Tell us what you think.

Down to the Bone: Zahler’s Debut a Dapper Genre Hybrid
For his directorial debut, screenwriter S. Craig Zahler assembles an illustrious cast in Bone Tomahawk, an old-school Western eventually shading by successful moments of horror. Though this feels like somewhat of an ingenious, if perverted version of something like The Searchers (1956), and is not the only recent blending of western horror (J.T. Petty’s 2008 film The Burrowers terrorizes its settlers with subterranean creatures), Zahler’s painstaking characterizations elevate the material beyond the usual potential of swarthy genre films handled as B-grade fare.
Although sporting an uncustomary running time considering the limited narrative (eclipsing two hours), which sometimes seems unnecessary, Zahler’s film is never arduous and sports a completely fine-tuned package of superb visuals and increasingly ominous score.
In the small town of Bright Hope, Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Kurt Russell) is the amiable voice of the law, assisted...

Man Of Steel scribe David S. Goyer may still be reeling from NBC's cancellation of Constantine, but at least he's found another comic book project to bounce back with. Cable outlet USA have given the green light to a small screen adaptation of Idw's Brooklyn Animal Control, which Goyer is set to executive produce. So far, a pilot episode has been commissioned, which will be written and produced by the comic's original creator, Jt Petty. This new Cbtv show won't carry the same focus as some of it's more superhero-centric counterparts. Instead, it follows the inner workings of a secret subdivision of the NYPD that functions as social services for some of the city’s most unique citizens -- werewolves. Delving into the lives of both the Case Officers, and the secretive, highly insular Kveld-Ulf, a community of werewolves living deep in the borough, Brooklyn Animal Control will examine city politics,...

Over the years, Hollywood has produced many haunted house films, and a great number of those have been based on "real life" events. That special subgenre will soon be expanding thanks to Fox Searchlight, which has just started development on Voices Through The Trumpet - a movie adapted from a 1936 New Yorker article that appears to be the first documented haunted house case. Deadline has the details on this newly developing project, though you can actually still read the original article on the New Yorker website (provided that you have a subscription to their archive). Screenwriter Jt Petty, best known for his work in video games, is adapting the original article, which was penned by reporter Carl Carmer (he died in 1976). At this time, there doesn't appear to be a director attached, though one could see the story attracting any notable horror filmmaker. The film will be begin in the...

Let me begin this review by stating this is most-definitely not your typical horror fare; something audiences will realise a mere five minutes into this raucous, sure-to-be-cult-hit, movie. Written and directed by J.T. Petty, who also penned the graphic novel on which this is based, Hellbenders is a genre-bending horror comedy that is most akin to Don Coscarelli’s recent movie John Dies at the End. If I had to narrow the analogy down I’d say Hellbenders is best described as The Exorcist meets Ghostbusters by way of Don Coscarelli and [early] Kevin Smith…
Sound interesting? Then go out and buy it. Trust me. The rest of you? Let me try and convince you why you should spend your hard-earned cash on this little indie horror that could.
