In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Captain's Holiday", Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was forced to take a vacation on the sexed-up beach resort planet of Risa where his impishly playful crew hoped he would have a drink, get laid, and return to the job less stern and more relaxed. Picard, a studious and intellectual fellow, would have been more content drinking tea and reading James Joyce's "Ulysses" in a dark room.
Luckily, Risa proves to be more exciting than Picard realized. He had no interest in beach shenanigans, but he did fall into the company of the utterly dazzling Indiana-Jone-type adventurer Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), a roguish tomb raider. Picard and Vash end up having to protect a rare, powerful artifact from time-traveling Vorgons, and fall in lust as a result. Picard returns to the Enterprise more relaxed and with a new romantic interest in the back of his mind.

Arnold Schwarzenegger made a whole slew of classic 80s action movies. Still, one remains totally obscure despite being released smack dab in the middle of his amazing The Terminator to Predator run of movies from 1984-87. That film in 1986’s Raw Deal. A formulaic 80s action flick, it’s the most modestly mounted Schwarzenegger action epic of the era, with Arnie coerced into starring in it to complete a long-standing contract he had with producer Dino De Laurentiis following Conan The Barbarian.
In it, Schwarzenegger is somewhat unconvincingly cast as a small-town sheriff named Kaminski, who used to be an FBI agent but was forced out of the bureau after roughing up a suspect. He’s recruited by his old mentor (The Night Stalker’s legendary Darren McGavin) whose son was killed by the Chicago mob. He wants Kaminski to go undercover in the mob and tear them apart from the inside.

It was announced today that acclaimed horror author Peter Straub passed away, an undeniable creative force who completely changed what was possible in the landscape of dark fantasy and horror fiction. Straub wrote with such beautiful world-building detail and rich prose that he often elevated the simplest concepts into full-fledged epics, which is precisely why the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King, collaborated with him on their collaborative masterpiece, "The Talisman."
While King has been the most adapted author of the modern era, Straub has only had two novels brought to life. In 1977, "The Haunting of Julia" was released inspired by his novel "Julia," but the film that should have had studios vying to gain the rights to any and all of Straub's works came in 1981 when Universal adapted his haunting novel "Ghost Story."
Straub published the novel in 1979, which became a national bestseller and helped cement Straub as one of the horror fiction greats.

Finally, the Daily Dead “Class Of” series has reached my beloved birth year, 1981. For the genre, 1981 signifies an important moment in the history of horror. With the introduction of two slasher icons, Michael Myers in 1978 and Jason Voorhees in 1980; the beginning of the sequel boom that would dominate the rest of the decade was born in 1981 with Halloween 2 and Friday the 13th Part 2. These two sequels are merely the introduction to the rise of slasher cinema for the 80s, with 1981 providing a variety of examples like The Burning, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Funhouse, Happy Birthday to Me, Final Exam, Night School, Student Bodies, and My Bloody Valentine.
1981 also proved the best year in the history of horror for werewolf movies. The iconic American Werewolf in London set the gold standard in practical transformation effects. The Howling is a demonstration of how horror and humor can coexist perfectly. Wolfen...

The post-9/11 war genre has a new defining entry, yet this robust little film – which cost a mere $5 million – won’t enjoy the exposure of The Hurt Locker. And that’s a pity, because The Outpost revitalizes the canon, landing as a blend of Jarhead and Hamburger Hill, John Irvin’s Vietnam film from 1987.
Of these two, it is actually Hill that is most pertinent, for it recounts the battle of Hill 937, a fiercely defended area that cost the lives of over 100 US and allied troops but was abandoned shortly thereafter. Such strategic idiocy would be replicated 40 years later during the war in Afghanistan, especially at Combat Outpost Keating, an army camp that was built at the bottom of a valley – a clear defensive weakness that would be dubbed ‘obviously indefensible’ in later government reports.
The Outpost tells the story of this camp in distinct one-hour halves. The first depicts...

In one of the biggest surprises this past pilot season, ABC’s NYPD Blue reboot did not go to series but was kept in midseason contention with a possibility for redevelopment.
It now appears that particular iteration of NYPD Blue, a sequel to the original Emmy-winning series, is dead. It is not being redeveloped, and the cast was released in June.
But it’s not the end of NYPD Blue‘s comeback at the network, which aired the iconic 1990s cop drama series.
“There are conversations about continuing it but possibly in a different iteration,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told Deadline during TCA on Monday.
The recent NYPD Blue pilot starred newcomer Fabien Frankel and co-starred original cast members Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup. The sequel centers on Theo (Frankel), the son of Dennis Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz character from the original series, who tries to earn his...

ABC’s NYPD Blue revival did not make it onto the network’s fall schedule — and now we know why.

On any other network, in any other circumstance, that show [likely] gets on the air. For us, we kept the bar really high. ABC’s NYPD Blue revival won’t be on the fall schedule — but don’t count it out just yet.
The pilot for the Emmy-winning cop drama’s much-anticipated return will be reshot, our sister site Deadline reports, with an eye towards a possible slot in the Alphabet network’s midseason slate. ABC executives are still enthusiastic about the revival, but feel like it needs a bit more work.
A continuation of the groundbreaking 1993-2005 original series, the NYPD Blue revival stars British newcomer Fabien Frankel as Theo Sipowicz, son of Blue‘s iconic cop Andy Sipowicz, played by Dennis Franz.

Exclusive: With an iconic title like NYPD Blue, if you do a reboot, you need to nail every aspect of it with no margin for error. For that reason, I hear that ABC’s NYPD Blue pilot will not be going for fall. I hear ABC brass remain high on the project but feel it needs a little more work.
The pilot, among the buzziest dramas at ABC this season, will be tweaked and likely undergo some reshoots for midseason consideration.
The new iteration of the classic cop drama stars newcomer Fabien Frankel, who sources say has breakout potential, and co-stars original cast members Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup.
The sequel centers on Theo (Frankel), the son of Dennis Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz character from the original series, who tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder.

Ghost Story is a film I spent a lot of time watching as a child, but you don’t really hear folks talk about it too often anymore, unfortunately. A film driven by atmosphere and a quiet sense of foreboding dread, Ghost Story is the hauntingly provocative adaptation of Peter Straub’s supernaturally-charged novel that proves that even though you may think you are done with the past, the past isn’t always necessarily done with you.
It’s a film that has for the most part aged well, despite the fact that director John Irvin practically wastes the talents of Ghost Story’s main ensemble, while the script from the usually solid Lawrence D. Cohen (Carrie) is just a tonal mess from start to finish. Despite all that though, Ghost Story—much like its otherworldly antagonist—has this weirdly hypnotic power to it, drawing you in despite its flaws...

Four elderly gentlemen form The Chowder Society, a group in which they meet up to smoke cigars and tell chilling ghost stories in an attempt to scare each other. Hiding from a dark secret of their past, they use their stories to push it from their memories. When one of the member’s sons dies in strange circumstances though, it seems that their past transgressions have come back to haunt them in a soul that refuses to let go of her vengeance.
Ghost Story is based on Peter Straub’s novel, and we get to hear plenty from the author on this Blu-ray release. This gives a good insight into an eighties movie that feels very original.

The Bond franchise which has been with us so long, has become so deeply entrenched in popular culture, that we often forget what it was that first distinguished the Bonds a half-century ago. Skyfall might be one of the best of the Bonds, and even, arguably, one of the best big-budget big-action flicks to come along in quite a while, but it’s not alone. The annual box office is – and has been, for quite some time – dominated by big, action-packed blockbusters of one sort of another. The Bonds aren’t even the only action-driven spy flicks (Mr. James Bond, I’d like you to meet Mr. Jason Bourne and Mr. Ethan Hunt).
That’s not to take anything away from the superb entertainment Skyfall is, or the sentimentally treasured place the Bonds hold. It’s only to say that where there was once just the one, there are now many.

Much like that it portrays, with the war movie there is always a thin line between success and failure. When dealing with such a hefty and complex subject matter, is one best suited to going on the offensive or holding back and forming a defensive line of conservatism? When dealing with real conflict involving real people, either by historical inspiration or factual invocation, are you making a drama or an action flick?
Regardless of which route one takes, this is a genre as susceptible to mediocrity and false hope as any other. Whether it be a great battle from history rendered obsolete by caricature or a teasing of genuine, shellshock events betrayed by insensitive thriller tropes, there will always be those that fail to hit the target when victory was so surely within reach. Intention is always undermined by incompetence.

His dramatisation of John le Carré's espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy starring Alec Guinness remains a British television classic. In the late ’50s, Luciano Vincenzoni co-wrote Mario Monicelli’s The Great War / La Grande guerra (1959), a humorous (if overlong) World War I comedy-drama starring Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi as reluctant conscripts that earned a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nomination and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival (tied with Roberto Rossellini’s Il Generale della Rovere). (*My apologies for this coming so long after Sound on Sight’s celebration of 50 years of James Bond, but I’ve been swamped with end-of-semester work and only just now managed to finish this. Hope you all still find this of interest.)

I was blown away by how well done Ghost Story was from start to finish. When I first came across this film, I had no clue that I would actually enjoy it. Oddly, it wasn’t until recently that I had even heard of this movie!
The question becomes, why haven’t many horror fans heard of or even seen this movie? I have no answer to that question. A full cast of veteran old school actors and the great script is well worth the effort. Fred Astaire (Ricky), Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (Edward), John Houseman (Sears), Melvyn Douglas (John), Craig Wasson (David) were superb in their respective roles.
The plot is the group of fairly well off elderly men comes together in town after the gruesome death of one of the Chowder society’s sons. We discover that the Chowder Society has a deep dark...

Regarding the picture (see above), Farrow's tweet reads: "See children's choir literally passing out from boredom during [Republican presidential candidate Rick] Santorum [Florida] speech." Despite a movie career that includes almost fifty films during the course of nearly five decades, Mia Farrow not only has never won an Oscar, she has never been even nominated for one. that's quite surprising, considering her movie credits. Among those are Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby (1968), with John Cassavetes; Peter Yates' John and Mary (1969), with Dustin Hoffman; Jack Clayton's The Great Gatsby...

Many—maybe too many, looking at this bunch of bone-tired warriors of Av-virtue—were the travels the Ferroni Brigade embarked on all through 2011: oftentimes for festivals all over Europe, sometimes for visits to this archive or that as part of our programming arbeit (to be read with a Japanese drawl). During those months in the dark, we saw a lot—some of which chimed and rhymed with new works we encountered in this multiplex back home or that gallery abroad, on this collector's Steenbeck or in that producer's private projection room (they still exist).
On one of those trips, we were joined by our main Mubi-man, His Kasness a.k.a. the Kasest with whom we plunged one evening into a brainstorming on what The Festival would look and feel like (truth be told: it was more like a communal delirium—but what do you expect from folks sitting...

But a more accurate way of evaluating the film's achievement would be to say that for Alfredson the moral is contained in the aesthetic, his visual scheme no mere eye candy,...

Everett Collection Alec Guinness in ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’
Before Gary Oldman donned his vintage eyeglasses to play John le Carre’s British intelligence agent George Smiley, actor Alec Guinness played the same role in a BBC adaptation of the author’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Directed by John Irvin, the seven-episode series — which was condensed to six episodes for U.S. audiences — debuted in 1979 and earned rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic.
