Gary Hutzel, four-time Emmy winning visual effects artist whose work helped define much of the Next Generation era of Star Trek and later, the Battlestar Galactica reboot, died Thursday in Vancouver from an apparent heart attack. He was 60. Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Hutzel attended The Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, studying photography. His career in entertainment took off in 1987 when he joined the Star Trek: The Next Generation as a VFX Coordinator. He…...

Ronald D. Moore's Battlestar Galactica series just got a little bit more awesome today with a video edit that features scenes from the series mixed with music from the classic 1986 film Top Gun. The result is just freakin' cool and worth five minutes of your time, especially if you're a fan of either of these properties. The video is called "Top Gun Galactica," and it was edited together by Nick Acosta, who explains what he wanted to accomplish with it,
"For my latest project, I recut one of my all time favorite movies to one of my all time favorite TV series. For part one of this film I wanted to show the life of a fighter pilot aboard a carrier at war. Much like a fireman, fighter pilots can be called at any moment and have to spring into action. Starbuck and Maverick are roughly the same character.

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Syfy has announced that the great game/series crossover Defiance is set to return to production in Toronto next week for Season 2. Along with that announcement comes the first information about new and returning cast and production, starting with James Murray as Mayor Pottinger. Ooo. He was the dishy Stephen from when-it-was-great Season 1 and 2 of Primeval.
But wait, there’s more – “Grant Bowler returns as Nolan, along with … Stephanie Leonidas as Irisa Nolan, Tony Curran as Datak Tarr…” Okay, we saw Nolan revive, which explains how he can return, but Irisa, what the heck did she turn into? Apparently still Irisa, so that’s good news. And excellent, Tony Curran will be back as Datak, so… how will he get out of the blood-covered mess he was in?
For the latest information about what will be going on in our favorite post-terra-formed-over version of St. Louis when we return to it next June,...

"Defiance" is a highly anticipated TV series/video game crossover project from Syfy and Trion Worlds with the game being released today, April 2nd, and the show premiering on April 15th.
To celebrate the game's launch and to help whet your appetites for the debut of "Defiance" on Syfy in just a few more days, we have the highlights of a conference call with the executive producer/showrunner for the series, Kevin Murphy, and Trion's vice president of development, Nathan Richardson.
Q: Could one or both of you fill us in on how this all started?
Kevin Murphy: I'll jump in on that. It's been five years in the making. About five years ago Dave Howe from Syfy and Lars Butler from Trion got together because Syfy had made a large investment in Trion, and they were looking for a project to do together. So they looked through the...

Chicago – There are so many lens flares in the hazy, visually drab “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome” that it looks like J.J. Abrams sneezed on the lens. And that’s not all “Galactica” creators Michael Taylor and David Eick took as inspiration from Abrams’ slickly generic yet crowd-pleasing “Star Trek” installments. Yet this latest attempt at rebooting the beloved sci-fi franchise is a complete misfire.
Originally proposed as the premise for a gaming system, the plot for “Blood & Chrome” emerged as the potential pilot for a new “Galactica” program (thankfully, SyFy opted against the idea). Going in the polar opposite direction of Eick’s superbly crafted, woefully short-lived prequel series, “Caprica,” “B&C” favors jittery handheld camerawork and derivative action set-pieces over provocative ideas and compelling characters. All that unites the two shows is their irritating overuse of the fearsome F-word, “frak,” which is perhaps the least amusing running gag in television history.

Ep David Eick and Luke Pasqualino Share How Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome Was Brought to Life
Ever since it debuted in 2003, science fiction fans have been clamoring for more about the dark, murky work of Battlestar Galactica, which resulted in the prequel series Caprica and the latest addition to the saga, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Blood & Chrome revisits the life of William Adama just as he is leaving the academy and engaging in the seemingly never-ending Cylon battle. In a recent press conference call executive producer David Eick and star Luke Pasqualino talked about the genesis of Blood & Chrome, the challenges in bringing it to the digital screen and where the Adama journey goes in this third series in the Galactica universe.
Where did the idea for doing another prequel come from?
David: I was asked by the network to think about a concept that would be under the umbrella or the rubric of the Battlestar Galactica cannon that would make sense as an online series.

Hopefully you have watched – hopefully more than once – the first two webisodes of Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome that premiered last Friday on Machinima Prime and posted here on SciFiMafia.com. The effects, the action, the storyline, the cast, it’s all great.
Episodes, each 7-12 minutes long, will continue to premiere on Machinima Prime every Friday through the end of the month, will be released on Blu-ray on February 19, 2013, and will premiere as a complete movie on Syfy in the first quarter of 2013.
In support of the premiere, Executive Producer Ron Eick participated in a Q&A panel last Friday to answer some questions and to set the record straight about Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome‘s plans to air on Syfy, some hopeful plans for the future, and more. He was joined by series star Luke Pasqualino later in the panel.

Machinima has posted the first two episodes of Blood and Chrome. You can watch them below. New episodes will be posted every Friday on the Machinima Prime YouTube channel, and the finale will be available on November 30.
CG Society has an interview with Doug Drexler (CG Supervisor) and Gary Hutzel (VFX Supervisor). You can read the full article at the link.
Blood & Chrome was a natural progression for Hutzel and his team, as they moved out of Caprica. In the last half of the season, the artists working on Caprica started to expand the show’s VFX footprint by doing entire virtual sets—something they perfected in Blood & Chrome.
Blood & Chrome is, nonetheless, a departure from previous productions in the franchise. “The show is unusual in the sense that it is cut very, very fast,” Hutzel describes. In fact, most of the shots in the two-hour movie span three seconds or less.

As we told you Tuesday, Syfy has announced that their upcoming gaming/TV series hybrid Defiance is set to air in 2013. Now they have released a bit more information about the show, which has begun production in Toronto, including the absolutely fantastic news that Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica) will be doing the music. He tweeted to me yesterday that “it’s going to be awesome!” If past performance is any indication, his additions will make the show and game absolutely epic.

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality.

Several updates today, which you may have caught on Twitter earlier.
If you don't have the DVD, the last five episodes of Caprica are available on Hulu and Syfy Rewind.
Den of Geek has a new interview with Eric Stoltz that's pretty interesting to read. (Reminder: His latest episode of Private Practice airs tonight at 10 pm on ABC.)
A few snippets from the interview:
Do you think that the show fell on the wrong side of a double-edged sword, following Battlestar?
I don't think it was what the majority of Battlestar fans wanted, for the most part. It probably would've served us all better to have not even been connected to it. (...)
It's rare to find characters so instantly complex as we got in Caprica. How do you balance the many levels of Daniel Graystone? How do you set about giving the audience a way into a character like that?...

Syfy has posted five new clips on the official site. One is a scene from last night episode, "Unvanquished," with Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales and Sasha Roiz. The second is a video blog called "Caprican Evolution." In it, Caprica writers and producers David Eick, Jane Espenson, Clara George, Michael Taylor, Ron Moore and visual effects supervisor Gary Hutzel discuss the worldbuilding aspects of the show (with special emphasis on Tauron culture) and working with the U-87. The next two clips are sneak peeks from episode 1x11, "Retribution," both involving Lacy (Magda Apanowicz) and her dealings with the Sto. From the looks of it, Barnabas (James Marsters) will be back in next week's episode. The last clip is the teaser for "Retribution." The clips are embedded below.
The podcast for "Unvanquished," with David Eick, Eric Stoltz and Tom Lieber, has been posted. You can find it here, as usual.

The first review of the mid-season premiere comes from York Dispatch and is pretty positive on the whole, with the exception of one particular storyline. Here is a snippet (spoilers):
You'll learn exactly what happened to Amanda, Zoe and Sister Clarice, who narrowly avoided a car-bombing orchestrated by a rival terror cell, and you'll see how Daniel plans to take his company back. As narrative momentum goes, there's just enough red meat here.
The episode is also a visual showcase, proving conclusively that you don't need to set your science-fiction series in outer space to conjure some striking images. The dazzling neons and art-deco skyscrapers of Caprica City (capital of the planet Caprica) are as impressive as they've ever been, but "Unvanquished" also takes us to the planet Gemenon, the spiritual hub of this particular universe. Though its computer-generated cathedrals and moonscapes are glaringly artificial, they're no less pretty for it.

Part sweeping soap, part mediation on the dangerous moral ramifications of artificial intelligence -- and totally gay friendly -- the “Battlestar Galactica” story continues with this compelling look at where the real conflict between humans and the Cylons began . . . in a vibrant world remarkably like our own, “Caprica.” From executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, “Caprica” Season 1.0 debuts on DVD on October 5, 2010 as a four-disc set and features Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.
Taking place fifty-eight years before Battlestar Galactica begins, “Caprica” Season 1.0 focuses on two powerful families – the Graystones and the Adamas – who find their destinies irrevocably intertwined after a devastating explosion. As the two houses struggle with the line where humanity ends and artificial intelligence – the Cylon race – begins, they will face off on a battlefield of corporate conspiracy, murder, sexual politics and family betrayal.

“The Cylons were created by man. They evolved. They rebelled. There are twelve Cylon models. And they have a plan…”
Just what the hell that plan was has been obscure to even the most hardy BSG fan since the series began. Finally, even after the finale of the series, we are fortunate to be handed down a new testament of the Cylons and their, ahem, machinations.
To describe what The Plan is – that is, what this new feature is – is difficult. Rather complex in narrative construction (loyal viewers of the show would expect no less), The Plan follows the chronology of the series from the miniseries, through near the end of season two. Told from the Cylons point-of-view, we are finally treated to secrets and given new insight into what makes the Toasters tick, as both an entire race and as individual characters.
Ultimately, in both plot and theme,...

For the second year in a row, "Battlestar Galactica" has won for television's best special effects from the Emmy awards. The team of Gary Hutzel, Michael Gibson, David Takemura, Doug Drexler, Kyle Toucher, Sean Jackson, Pierre Drolet, Aurore De Blois and Derek Ledbetter won for their work in the "Battlestar Galactica" episode "He That Believeth In Me," the fourth season premiere on SciFi Channel. However, that wasn't the only award "Battlestar" walked away with. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End drew a leading seven nominations for the sixth annual Visual Effects Society Awards. Transformers, another Industrial Light + Magic-led project, followed with five nominations.
Not far behind the autobots were five films that secured four nominations apiece: I Am Legend, Spider-Man 3, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Ratatouille and Surf's Up.
Of the titles that received four or more VES nominations, three of them -- Pirates, Transformers and Legend -- also were named to the Academy' visual effects category short list released Friday. The three also are nominees in VES' top category of visual effects in a visual effects-driven film.
In four of the past five years, the winner of the VES' top prize went on to win the Oscar category. The exception was in 2004, when the VES recognized Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Academy honored Spider-Man 2.
Meanwhile, the selections of Ratatouille and Surf's Up -- which included nods in categories typically dominated by live-action films -- demonstrates a distinction between visual effects and animation, a topic that has been getting a lot of attention of late.
The Academy's initial list of 15 VFX contenders included Ratatouille and Beowulf -- also reflecting this direction of thinking as the selections are rare feats for animated films.
Along these lines, VES introduced a new category this year for outstanding effects in an animated motion picture. In this new competition, Ratatouille earned two nominations (for food and for the rapids), and Surf's Up, Beowulf and Shrek the Third rounded out the category. Beowulf and Shrek earned a total of two VES nominations apiece.
The Pirates sequel is nominated for outstanding visual effects in a visual effects-driven film, single visual effect of the year, created environment in a live-action film, compositing in a film (two nominations recognizing different individuals), models and miniatures in a film and animated character in a live-action film.
The previous Pirates film, Dead Man's Chest won all six categories last year as well as the Oscar.
This year, Transformers is nominated in the same categories as Pirates with the exception of created environments, where Transformers was not nominated.
In television, the Sci Fi Channel miniseries Tin Man, the CW series Smallville and the BBC's Doctor Who franchise led with three nominations each.
Steven Spielberg will receive the VES Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony Feb. 10 at Hollywood & Highland that will recognize visual effects in film, television, commercials and video games.
