The Roundabout Theatre Company tonight renamed its Broadway venue – a 104-year-old building that began as the Selwyn and most recently went by the prosaic American Airlines Theatre – to honor its late artistic director Todd Haimes.
The 42nd Street venue officially became the Todd Haimes Theatre in a dedication ceremony tonight. The name change was announced last June, and becomes official just in time to welcome its first tenant: The revival of John Patrick Shanley’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt: A Parable, directed by Scott Ellis and starring Tyne Daly and Liev Schreiber, begins previews this Friday ahead of a February 29 opening night.
The venue’s name change was made to honor, in the words of the company, the “extraordinary dedication to the institution [Haimes] called home, and his enormous contributions to Roundabout and the entire theatre community.”

Jimmy Buffett is no longer with us, the famous singer having passed away on September 1, 2023 at age 76. One group of people who got to see him in concert while they had the chance? The Gang.
"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" season 13, episode 6, "The Gang Solves the Bathroom Problem," features the eponymous leads preparing to go to a Jimmy Buffett concert. For the occasion, they're all dressed out in Hawaiian shirts and, in Dennis' (Glenn Howerton) case, a ship captain's hat.
However, the quintet aren't quite the Buffett experts they claim to be. Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Charlie (Charlie Day), and Frank (Danny DeVito) fall into the myth of believing "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" is a Buffett song and hope he'll play it at the concert. In reality, Buffett sang about a different kind of alcoholic beverage (see his 1977 hit "Margaritaville"). Even when Dennis corrects the others that Rupert Holmes sings "The Piña Colada Song,...

Hulu’s acclaimed “Only Murders in the Building,” currently vying for 11 Emmys, has gone all razzle dazzle in its third season. Make that rattle dazzle! Beleaguered Broadway director Oliver (Martin Short) was hoping for a comeback on the Great White Way with the mystery thriller “Death Rattle.” But when his leading man (Paul Rudd) is murdered, he decides to turn the straight play into a musical, “Death Rattle Dazzle!” And in the third episode, Meryl Streep’s nervous journeyman actress and Ashley Park’s leading lady performed the show-stopping ballad “Look for the Light” co-written by Sara Bareilles. One almost forgot the prime suspects in “Death Rattle Dazzle!” are the infant Pickwick triplets.
The 1959 multiple Tony winner “Redhead” also has a rather strange plot for a musical: a serial killer is stalking women in London in the 1880s during the time Jack the Ripper was terrorizing the city. Sounds like a real toe-tapper.

Paramount+ has announced that Sometimes When We Touch, a three-part documentary series exploring the history of soft rock music, will premiere exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023 and will also stream in the U.K., Latin America and Australia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. Sometimes When We Touch is the untold story of soft rock, whose artists dominated pop music worldwide in the ’70s, only to crash and burn in the ’80s, eventually experiencing one of the most unlikely comebacks in music history. The series presents all-new interviews with some of soft rock’s biggest legends, like Air Supply (“All Out of Love”), Dan Hill (“Sometimes When We Touch”), Kenny Loggins (“This Is It”), Ray Parker Jr. (“A Woman Needs Love”), Rupert Holmes (“Escape: The Piña Colada Song”) and Toni Tennille (“Love Will Keep Us Together”). Through candid and poignant stories, these...

Exclusive: The long-in-coming return of the musical based on Jerry Lewis’ The Nutty Professor, and a new musical adaptation of the Richard Dreyfuss 1995 film Mr. Holland’s Opus, will receive major regional theater stagings this year, with Maine’s nationally recognized Ogunquit Playhouse announcing the productions for its 2022 season.
This summer’s staging of The Nutty Professor, based on Lewis’ 1963 comedy, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and book and lyrics by Rupert Holmes, will be the first production of the musical since a planned Broadway-bound Nashville world premiere directed by Lewis himself was scuttled 10 years ago with the death of Hamlisch. The musical has not been staged since.
The Ogunquit production, set for July 1 to August 6, will be directed by Marc Bruni, director of the Tony-winning Broadway musical Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Casting has not been announced.

Summer’s here and time is right for dancing … on the deck of a large nautical vessel. During the late Seventies and early Eighties, the radio was dominated by silver-tongued white-dude crooners with names like Rupert and Gerry, emoting over balmy R&b beats, swaying saxes, and dishwasher-clean arrangements. Though it didn’t have a name, the genre — soft rock you could dance to — was dismissed by serious rock fans as fluffy and lame. But thanks to a web series in the mid-2000s, the style — belatedly named “yacht rock...

As he himself would have admitted, Eddie Money was no one’s idea of a conventional rock star. His stage moves were always a little gawky and spasmodic, his borderline hoarse voice in need of a lozenge or two. Emerging during the punk era though never part of it, he preferred the stadium-friendly shout-along choruses of mainstream rock and adopted the suit-and-tie New Wave look while keeping his hair unfashionably long. He was even an NYPD cop — a career move that, while utterly honorable, didn’t jibe with the traditional,...

Andy Samberg — or at least his heckling alter ego with a really bad blonde wig — may not be invited back to the “Tonight Show” again after the multiple rude interjections he made during poor Peter’s (Jimmy Fallon) performance of “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” Tuesday night.
A very nervous-looking Peter (also with a bad wig) came up to the mic on the late-night stage and began to sing the Rupert Holmes classic and the poor guy couldn’t make it through one single lyric without getting some loud commentary from Samberg.

A heckling Andy Samberg thwarts Jimmy Fallon’s late-night serenade of “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” in a bizarre sketch from Tuesday’s Tonight Show. Peter (Fallon), decked out in a mushroom haircut, earrings and piano tie, smoothly croons Rupert Holmes’ 1979 soft-rock hit – with Samberg interrupting at every vocal pause to guess lyrics and shout random nonsense.
“I was tired of my lady,” the singer opens, with his rival countering, “Why?” They continue, “We’ve been together too long” (“What was your relationship like?”), “Like a worn-out recording” (“Of what,...

Something about this song is just fun, bouncy, and inescapably humorous. It probably wasn’t meant to be that way, as Rupert Holmes was writing about a man that had lost the fire in his marriage and was looking for something exciting to come his way. In films this song has become something of a parody considering that it just a very laid back and relaxed tune that almost anyone can sing. So not everyone wants to leave their boring humdrum life, but they can at least enjoy a song that makes them feel somewhat relaxed right where they are. 5.

As if a Blake Shelton concert isn’t enough fun on its own, the 40-year-old country crooner made his encore on Saturday at Crash My Playa — Luke Bryan‘s music festival in Riviera Maya, Mexico — one for the record books.
When Shelton covered the song “Footloose” during his encore, he brought girlfriend Gwen Stefani onstage to help him out.
The surprise performer didn’t stop there. Stefani then led the crowd while singing No Doubt’s 2001 hit “Hella Good.”
“Holy! That’s Gwen Stefani for real,” Shelton said after Stefani, 47, exited the stage while blowing him a kiss.

Juno director Jason Reitman makes a spirited attempt to capture the essence of modern digital life, as porn-addicted husband Adam Sandler finds he’s not the only one seeking online solace

• Erin Cressida Wilson on her education in erotica
There’s a funny YouTube compilation from dozens of modern thrillers and horror films, simply showing panicky people all saying: “My cellphone! I can’t get a signal!” Modern movie-making is unhappy about modern digital devices messing up traditional plot devices. Cyber-interconnectedness is spoiling solitude, ruining jeopardy. So this movie from director Jason Reitman and his co-writer Erin Cressida Wilson (which they adapted from the 2011 novel by Chad Kultgen) is an interesting, spirited, if finally rather sentimental attempt to tackle this issue and set it to rest. It wants to show 21st-century lives being lived out on screen and online, with both older and younger generations now dependent on the web.

(Cbr) When Mondo announced early this month that it will release the hit soundtrack "Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume 1" on deluxe vinyl, a common response was, “That’s great, but shouldn’t it be on cassette?” Well, now it will be, undoubtedly leading to refrains of, “What’s a cassette?” According to Billboard, the limited-edition release from Marvel Music/Hollywood Records will arrive Nov. 17, exclusively to independent retailers associated with Record Store Day. The first cassette released by Disney Music Group since 2003, it will remain available through Dec. 31. Each cassette will come with a digital-download version of the soundtrack. Debuting July 29, the soundtrack to Marvel’s blockbuster space adventure spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200; it’s the first soundtrack consisting entirely of previously released songs to reach the top of the chart. According to Billboard, "Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume 1" has sold more than 543,000 copies.

There are two upcoming movie musicals that, for a long time, I've wanted to make into motion pictures, should someone with money be willing to give me the funds to make them -- Into The Woods and The Last 5 Years. I'm both nervous and excited to see how directors Rob Marshall and Richard Lagravenese, respectfully, have interpreted the material I hold so close to my heart. I am especially nervous for Into The Woods, given Marshall's less than impressive track record. If someone is going to screw up something I cherish, it should be me. Of course, there are far more than two musicals I have a deep connection to. Some have already been made into films, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, but there is a vast collection of musicals I have thought could make fantastic films, but have never been made.

Mondo has announced that they will be releasing the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack on vinyl, and they've revealed the art and specs for it. This is one of the best movies I've seen this year, and one of the things I loved about it most was the soundtrack and how that music played an important part of telling the story. That walkman and those songs were like characters themselves.
The art you see above was created by Tyler Stout, and one of the other cool things about the vinyl release is that each one will come randomly packed with one of the following 9 mini prints. They are currently taking pre-orders right here.

When Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn began assembling the soundtrack for his Marvel superhero flick, he wanted familiar hits but not overplayed radio staples. In the movie, now officially the biggest film of the year, these songs would connect lead character Peter "Star-Lord" Quill – who was abducted by aliens just after his mother's death in 1988 – to his old life and the era his mother grew up in.
"The tape is really the character of Quill's mother," Gunn tells Rolling Stone. "The Walkman and the compilation tape inside of...

Music plays a big part in "Guardians of the Galaxy" in an interesting way, as the Star-Lord cruises the galaxy listening to sweet '70s tunes his late mom left him on a mix tape. As writer/director James Gunn explained, "that's the only thing he has left of his mother and that's the only thing he has left of his home on Earth. He uses that as a connection to his past and to the sadness that he feels of having left all that and lost all that."
Naturally, these nostalgic but rockin' tunes also resonated with fans of "GoTG." They've snapped up so many copies of "Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol. 1" that it's number one on the Billboard 200. According to Billboard, "GoTG" and "Frozen" have been the only movie soundtracks this year to hit the charts, and this offbeat superhero movie's soundtrack is also unique in...

Hollywood Records and Marvel are releasing three albums from Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy on Tuesday, July 29.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe soundtrack features classic 1970s songs from the film, plus score by composer Tyler Bates (“Watchmen,” “Slither,” “Dawn of the Dead”). Music plays a major role in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy as the great songs featured in the film are part of the storyline in a unique way.
Explaining how the songs come to play in the story, director James Gunn says, “One of the main story points in the movie is that Quill has this compilation tape [Awesome Mix #1] that he got from his mother before she died that she made for him. It was of songs that she loved, all songs from the 1970s, and that’s the only thing he has left of his mother and that’s the only thing he has left of his home on Earth.

Much of the marketing for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has leaned heavily on 1970s hits like Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling” or Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky,” and from the looks of the new track listing for the film’s soundtrack, those are just the tip of the iceberg.
While it’s common for comic book films to predominantly feature orchestral scores, James Gunn’s entry in the Marvel cinematic universe is anything but “common,” and the inclusion of soundtrack full of awesome hits from the 60′s and 70′s makes sense. The lead protagonist, Peter Quill, was a boy on Earth before he was jettisoned into space and became the “legendary outlaw” known as Star-Lord. It appears that this “Awesome Mix – Vol. 1″ tape is one of his prized earthly possessions, which explains why he’s willing to risk his well-being to snatch his headphones...

With a collection of tunes that Peter Quill himself would approve of, the cover and tracklist of the soundtrack for "Guardians of the Galaxy" were revealed Tuesday, and both have a nostalgia-inducing vibe.
Harkening back to its use in the film's first trailer, the soundtrack kicks off with Blue Swede's 1974 hit "Hooked on a Feeling," and the compilation's affinity for tunes from the '60s and '70s doesn't stop there. The cover seems to be cribbed from Quill's personal cassette collection, depicting a tape in a Walkman (what old people used to listen to music with, kids) labeled "Awesome Mix Vol. 1."
The retro selections no doubt have personal meaning for "Guardians" director James Gunn, who shared a photo of the soundtrack cover on his Facebook page with the note that he was "So happy [Marvel] had the balls to go with this simple design." He later posted a picture of an old Sony Walkman,...

Sometimes the stupidest things make us so damn happy. Thank the mighty Zeus for the Internet. A new Tumblr has popped up to introduce us to the phenomenon that is "Piña Colliding." We bet you're wondering what "Piña Colliding" means, and you're also probably wondering if it has anything to do with the song "Escape" by Rupert Holmes (also known as The Piña Colada Song). Answers to your queries are but a little mouse scroll away. Basically whoever created this Tumblr really and truly believes in this theory: "'Escape (The Piña Colada Song)' by Rupert Holmes is great and it should be in every movie." So he's putting it in every movie, but at the most...

Even aside from the problem of an ever-shrinking chorus, there’s a reason musicals about multiple murders, unlike dramas and movies and television shows, are so uncommon. In a musical, the stakes have to be high enough to give the characters a reason to sing. Yet if the stakes are high enough for serial killing, all but the greatest songs can seem ludicrous. (I’m talking to you, Jekyll and Hyde.) So unless you’re the man who wrote Sweeney Todd, you probably want to go with satire, as Rupert Holmes did in adapting Dickens’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Following in Drood’s slightly mincing footsteps, the authors of the new musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder aim for droll comedy; especially in the knock-’em-dead performance of Jefferson Mays as various undearly departeds, they usually hit their mark. That’s partly due to the...

New York -- The Broadway production of A Time to Kill, Rupert Holmes' stage adaptation of John Grisham's courtroom drama of justice and morality, will close Nov. 17, just four weeks after opening at the John Golden Theatre to blah reviews and lukewarm box office. Based on bestselling author Grisham's 1989 debut novel, the play chronicles the incendiary trial of an African-American man charged with murdering the two white rednecks who raped and brutalized his 10-year-old daughter in a small fictional Mississippi township in the early 1980s. The show's October opening coincided with the publication from Doubleday of

The word “quaint” is not one you’d use to describe either John Grisham’s first novel or Joel Schumacher’s 1996 screen version of “A Time to Kill.” But quaint is very much what you get on the Broadway stage with Rupert Holmes’ adaptation, which opened Sunday at the Golden Theater. Quaint is not necessarily a bad thing, and the show’s producers promise as much with the subhead: “A new courtroom drama.” When is the last time Broadway hosted a courtroom drama, new or old? The genre used to be a theater staple – Ayn Rand’s “Night of January 16,” Agatha Christie’s “Witness.

New York – The audience becomes the jury in A Time to Kill, Rupert Holmes’ by-the-numbers stage adaptation of John Grisham’s page-turning 1989 debut novel. But unlike the workings of a real jury, there’s no room for ambiguity, moral complexity or startling insight in this formulaic courtroom drama about institutionalized racism in the Deep South, in which every liberal-pandering response has been hardwired into the dated material. Sturdy ensemble acting and Grisham’s compelling storytelling make this go down easily, but the production provides little persuasive evidence that the thriller needed to become a play. Perhaps the
