Rad
Directed by Hal Needham
Written by Sam Bernard and Geoffrey Edwards
1986, USA
It’s going to take a lot more than skill for Cru Jones to conquer the toughest BMX challenge in the world. It’s going to take a miracle.
Rad, made three years after Nicole Kidman’s BMX Bandits, remains the most popular BMX film to date; which isn’t saying much since there have only been a handful of BMX films ever made. A product of the 80′s, Rad seems more interested in ramping up as much product placement as it could squeeze in, than in character development or plot – but longtime Stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham (Smokey and the Bandit, Cannonball Run) does the best he can with the script given to him. In fact, Rad fits so well into Needham’s oeuvre that it’s no wonder he offers a stunning opening 8 minute BMX montage and...

Although it was down a tick in the ratings on Palm Sunday, March 24 (10.3 million total viewers vs. 10.9 and 10.8 on the Sundays prior, respectively), History's "The Bible," a dramatic retelling that spans Genesis to Revelation, finishes out its run on Sunday, March 31 -- also Easter Sunday in the Christian world -- as an unqualified hit.
Of course, it didn't hurt that executive producer Mark Burnett -- of "Survivor," "The Apprentice" and "The Voice" fame, among others -- is a savvy marketer, or that he and wife Roma Downey ("Touched by an Angel"), also an executive producer and starring in the role of the Virgin Mary, toured the country previewing the 10-hour miniseries to faith groups and giving endless interviews.
On top of that, by pure coincidence -- unless Burnett and Downey have deep-insider status at the Vatican -- Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI resigned his office effective Feb. 28, meaning the Sunday that "The Bible" premiered,...

Like Night of the Hunter, Tod Browning’s Freaks or Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, The Road to Yesterday can be ranked among the UFOs of cinema. It’s place in the heart of Cecil B. DeMille’s work proves to be in itself very distinctive. We know that, during his entire life, DeMille had virtually only one producer—Paramount (the former Famous Players Lasky)—just like Minnelli was MGM’s man and Corman American International’s. Sixty-three of his films (out of seventy) were produced at Paramount. And, oddly enough, it is among the seven outsiders, situated within a brief period from 1925 to 1931, that his best activity is to be found (I’m thinking of Madam Satan, The Godless Girl, and The Road to Yesterday)–his most audacious undertakings. To top it off, for this uncontested king of the box office, his best films were his biggest commercial failures.

Looking back at 2012 on what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2012—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2012 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2012 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

It's that time of year where we celebrate the memorable games from the last year. The best, the best-looking, the one's that kept us on the edge of our seat, and the ones that nearly had us tossing the controller in frustration. Be sure to check out the other MTV Multiplayer Best of 2012 lists!
In 2012, we taken a closer look at some of the soundtracks gracing the games we liked throughout the year--from the orchestral, Hollywood-style scores by award-winning composers to curated collections featuring indie and underground hits.
So what sounded good in games in 2012?
This presented a welcome challenge: a lot of games sounded pretty good, and it took some time to whittle the choices down to just a top three. That's not going to stop us from pointing your earholes towards some worthy runners-up.

Although the Today Network’s Royal prank call was broadcast nationally, only Sydney station 2Day FM potentially faces sanctions because of the way the licensing regime works, Mumbrella can reveal.
The Summer 30 was produced from the Sydney studios of Southern Cross Austereo’s 2Day FM. It was broadcast across the Today Network, including Fox FM in Melbourne, 92.9 in Perth, B105 in Brisbane and Safm in Adelaide, along with stations in Southern Cross Austereo’s regional network.
On Wednesday night, the show broadcast a prank call carried out by Michael ‘Mc’ Christian and Mel Greig. They impersonated Prince Charles and The Queen and tricked a nurse on the ward where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for acute morning sickness to give out confidential information about her condition. Over the weekend, it emerged that the nurse who put the call though appeared to have taken her own life.

Chaos reigns in the show choir world. Evil Sue Sylvester roams the halls of McKinley High. Rachel and Kurt see all of their dreams come true. This is the "Glee" episode they call "Swan Song."
Marley isn't dead, to begin with...
Ok, when did Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) become the sassy mean girl of New Directions? Because she certainly is here. Granted, her anger is somewhat justified. Marley's (Melissa Benoist) tumble at the end of "Gangnam Style" caused the entire club to rush her back to the practice room for TLC and juice boxes.
This was a mistake. Apparently, the draconian rules of show choir dictate that teams who leave the stage forfeit any chance of a win.
The Warblers have beaten New Directions at Sectionals. The competitive season is over.

In 1760s Denmark, a woman (Alicia Viklander) married to the highly irresponsible King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) falls for his politically radical physician (Mads Mikkelsen). The two lovers conspire to manipulate the king into embracing the ideas of the Enlightenment, which leads to a revolution.
This is a famous story in Denmark, and has been recounted in books, plays, and an opera. However, this is the first time a full film adaptation has been made of such a tale. Co-writer/director Nikolaj Arcel’s successful A Royal Affair (executive produced by Lars von Trier) has now become the country’s official submission for the “Best Foreign Language Film” Academy Award. (Read our Ciff 2012 “7/10″ capsule review here.)

The Master (12)
(Paul Thomas Anderson, 2012, Us) Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons. 144 mins
Anderson has now entered that realm where everything he does is expected to be a masterpiece. This certainly feels like one. Like There Will Be Blood, it explores a big subject (a Scientology-like cult) via two contrasting men: Hoffman as the Hubbard-ish leader; Phoenix as a drunken, damaged drifter. Those expecting a straightforward story – tough. You're getting a "masterpiece".
Rust And Bone (15)
(Jacques Audiard, 2012, Fra/Bel) Marion Cotillard, Armand Verdure. 123 mins
As he did with A Prophet, Audiard makes us care so much about his characters we'll follow them anywhere. This time it's a study of physical and mental frailty,...

Good Times, Bad Times
I don’t have a lot to say here other that I actually enjoyed this past week’s drama, mostly because of the acting. I really think Sinan Eroglu has done an excellent job showing Bilal’s conflict over his sexuality, he’s probably given the best and strongest performance during this storyline. That final scene between Lucas and Bilal where they said goodbye was nicely done and I like that we’re seeing Lucas be mature enough to accept a situation for what it is, even if he may not like it.
I must admit I didn’t much care for Lucas’ attempt to ambush Bilal with his gay Muslim pal, as I think someone should never be pressured to come out, but I did like that the reality of Bilal’s situation wasn’t sugar coated in that coming out...

I'm curious to what extent working in anthology format on the upcoming Metal Hurlant Chronicles affected composer Jesper Kyd when he tackled the soundtrack for Darksiders II. The musician, whose soundtrack work has been part of Hitman for Io Interactive and Assassin's Creed at Ubisoft had a vast, empty, post apocalyptic landscape to work with in Darksiders II and I wouldn't have been surprised if the initial instinct with that kind of thing is to hit the player over the head with the usual driving horns and percussive sounds we've come to associate with Skyrim or Kingdoms of Amalur.
Instead, Kyd's produced a work with an almost sci-fi sound, a strange and still fitting complement to Death's savage attempts to bring the human race back to life and redeem his brother, War. After spending a few hours with the Darksiders II Ost, I spoke to Kyd about his work on...

As much as console gamers love online multiplayer as a bonus to a strong single-player campaign, nobody wants to play another rehashed version of Deathmatch – leave that for Call of Duty, Halo, Medal of Honor or any number of shooters that have strong existing communities.
However, if you as a developer can come up with a truly unique experience then why not put it in.
This week at Gamescom, Square Enix and iO Interactive announced a new “Contracts” mode in Hitman: Absolution. In this mode, gamers will be able to create custom missions to share with the community. If an online player decides to take your “Contract”, he or she will be rewarded based on how well they complete the objectives you set. They will also earn contract dollars, which can be used to unlock additional weapons or create more elaborate contract missions.

Dorothy Booraem is a video production multi-hyphenate from Lincoln, Nebraska. In addition to creating several film and video shorts, she is also the writer and director of the Asian-influenced horror feature Wake the Witch (available on Netflix). As the COO of Unfiltered Entertainment, a privately owned production company, she has helped in fostering a creative community of artists who specialize in genre content. Her newest project, Blood Rites, is a well-shot, micro-budget horror feature that she co-wrote, produced and directed with the help of her dedicated team. In spite of our underwhelming review, Booraem generously gave her time (and refreshing sense of humor) to speak with Planet Fury about working with a low budget, her creative process and embracing negative criticism.

In the past couple of years, sex and human trafficking has been brought to the attention of the public thanks to Hollywood and indie filmmakers. Movies like Taken, Machine Gun Preacher, The Whistleblower, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and Trade all do their best to bring the subject into the light as a serious global problem. Recently, comic books have entered into the fight to bring awareness to this horrific crime against humanity.
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings for the purposes of reproductive slavery, commercial sexual exploitation, or forced labor. This form of modern-day slavery was recently reported to bring in an estimated global annual profit of $32 billion a year. According to the United Nations, an estimated 2.5 million people from 127 different countries were being trafficked into 137 countries worldwide in 2008.

Easton Ellis is teasing Twitter with ideas on casting, directors and screenwriters (himself) for the adaptation of El James's erotic novels. Is he serious?
Maverick novelist Bret Easton Ellis has put himself forward to adapt erotic literary sensation Fifty Shades of Grey for the big screen with an enthusiastic Twitter splurge.
El James's tale of bondage and domination has become the fastest-selling book of the year, prompting a rush among publishers to develop their own take on the emerging "mommy porn" phenomenon. Studio Universal won the screen rights in March and plans a trilogy based on the novel and its two sequels. Angelina Jolie was at one point tipped to direct following the critical success of her debut film In the Land of Blood and Honey. Easton Ellis, however, has other ideas.

Actor Bill Paxton studied old letters composed by his great-great-grandfather during the Civil War as research for his new historical miniseries Hatfields & McCoys.
Paxton and Kevin Costner play real-life rivals Randall McCoy and William Anderson Hatfield, who lead their clan into a bitter battle over the theft of a pig - despite recently becoming the best of friends as comrades during the U.S. Civil War.
Chaos ensues as growing tensions turn the feud into an all-out war over family honour and justice, and Paxton admits he had such a tough time getting into character, he dug up his old relative's letters in a bid to better understand the mindset of the era.
He tells the New York Times, "I went down to Pikeville, Kentucky to do a little research. But these were men who didn't leave a written record. I had a book of letters that my great-great-grandfather Elisha Franklin Paxton had written to his wife during the Civil War. He had gone to Yale (University) and died at age 35 at the Battle of Chancellorsville, leading Stonewall's Brigade (a Confederate Army combat unit).
"The mind-set of that time, when every decision you made was based on Christian duty and honour, was a foreign concept to a modern mentality. To really hear someone of their time speaking under duress was helpful to both these characters, who started out like brothers in the Civil War and came out enemies."...

Guff triumphantly returns with the latest news, reviews and a countdown of the UK video game top ten. It’s all primed and ready to be picked apart and fondled ever so delicately by our not-so-expert team of seasoned geeks.
With the hugely successful release of Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 come mixed feelings over the changes made to the series after a nine year absence. The release of Max Payne 3 also brings with it a vehicular tease for Grand Theft Auto V, while other topics of discussion include a unique take on pre-order incentives from Square Enix, with Hitman Sniper Challenge.
This week’s episode also includes a dose of movie chat, with a review of the relentlessly action packed The Raid. There’s also some speculation over the tantalising teaser trailers for Skyfall and Anchorman 2.

It’s that time again… okay, it’s a little past that normal time, thanks to the Mix March Madness wrapup, but here are the preview materials for DC Comics releases for July 2012.
What’s on tap this month? More of the Before Watchmen books, with the debut of Ozymandias from Len Wein and Jae Lee, the conclusion of the Court of Owls storyline and crossover in all the Bat-books, and the debut of the done-in-one book, National Comics, featuring the New 52 Debut (coming right at you) of Eternity.
And in the white elephant of desire category, there’s the $300 statue showing the climactic scene from The Dark Knight Returns.
Once more, into the breach? Banzai!
As always, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

This week: Meryl Streep has been nominated for more Oscars than any other actress, and the adoring Academy tossed her another little gold man this year for her performance as steely British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," a biopic that also took home an Oscar for Best Makeup.
Also new is this week is the sci-fi thriller "The Darkest Hour," the acclaimed British indie "Tyrannosaur" and the Blu-ray debut of "A Streetcar Named Desire," which includes previously censored footage.
'The Iron Lady'
Box Office: $29 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 53% Rotten
Storyline: This biographical drama stars Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female prime minister of the United Kingdom. The enigmatic, controversial and often despised Thatcher was a grocer's daughter who overcame gender and class barriers, and whose steel determination helped her be heard in a world ruled by men.
Extras! "Recreating the Young Margaret Thatcher" highlights the other actress,...

Rapper's critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy didn't make the cut for Sunday's top prize, and it's in good company.

One of the favorite parlor games the morning after the Grammy Awards is the predictable bellyaching about which artists got robbed during the big show. And the category that typically draws the most Monday-morning quarterbacking is the biggest one of the night: Album of the Year.
Long before the 54th annual ceremony Sunday night, the drumbeat had already begun about an album that failed to make the list despite its wide critical acclaim and deep musicality. Though he's the leading nominee at this year's ceremony with seven nods, Kanye West's career-defining My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy failed to make the cut for the night's top prize.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has unveiled its list of 10 Most Influential Silent Films in celebration of Michel Hazanavicius’ ode to the silent era, The Artist, which won three Golden Globes® Sunday night, including Best Picture . Musical or Comedy, Best Actor . Musical or Comedy for Jean Dujardin and Best Original Score. The Artist also picked up 12 British Academy Film Award nominations. The Weinstein Company will expand its release of The Artist nationwide on Friday.
TCM’s list of 10 Most Influential Silent Films spans from the years 1915 to 1928 and features such remarkable films as D.W. Griffith’s groundbreaking (and controversial) The Birth of a Nation (1915), which revolutionized filmmaking techniques; Nanook of the North (1922), a film frequently cited as the first feature-length documentary; Cecil B. DeMille’s epic silent version of The Ten Commandments (1923); Sergei Eisenstein’s oft-imitated Battleship Potemkin (1925), which took montage techniques to an entirely new level; and Fritz Lang’s...

Of all five nominees for this year's DGA Award — Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris), David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), Alexander Payne (The Descendants) and Martin Scorsese (Hugo) — you might think that Hazanavicius (above) would be the least likely to have made the film that's sparked the fury of a Hollywood legend. "This Oscar season has so far been tame in terms of bad-mouthing," writes Deadline's Mike Fleming, "and I don't think I've heard a complaint quite like this one before." And he reproduces an official statement that went out far and wide today that begins:
Los Angeles: "I want to report a rape," said Kim Novak, the legendary star of Vertigo, Picnic, and many other revered classics. "My body of work has been violated by The Artist. This film took the Love Theme music from Vertigo and used the emotions it engenders as its own.

If trolls turn to stone when exposed to sunlight, would a powerful Uv lamp have exactly the same effect? Can "rapid calcification" really be the scientific explanation behind the magic of fairy tale and folklore? And, most importantly, if trolls can smell the blood of a Christian man, can they also smell the blood of a Muslim?
Just when it seemed that the well-worn "found footage" gag had finally run its course (did anyone really want to see yet another Blair Witch rip-off?) along comes André Ovredal's marvellously sprightly Norwegian oddity Troll Hunter (2010, Momentum, 15) to breathe unexpected new life into the apparently moribund genre.
Following a spate of livestock mutilations, a group of student film-makers sets off in search of a suspected poacher and stumbles upon a secret network of government-controlled troll hunters. Brilliantly, these down-to-earth daredevils are just...

Boardwalk Empire – the star-studded prohibition era drama from HBO – returned to our television screens with a bang this past weekend. The show seems to have found its footing right out of the gate, and is at its well-acted, violent, multi-faceted best in this season’s opening episode – titled “21” for the year portrayed (1921).
When last season closed, Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) had just won the re-election for his party and superficially seemed to have consolidated his hold on booze distribution and political power in Atlantic City. However, a re-invigorated former boss – the Commodore (Dabney Coleman) – had enlisted Nucky’s brother Eli (Shea Whigham) and his protege Jimmy (Michael Pitt) in a conspiracy to overthrow Nucky. In this season’s first episode, the Commodore and his cronies make their first moves to attack Nucky’s lucrative position of power.

The Undefeated, a movie charting Palin's rise from 'soccer mom' to vice-presidential candidate, draws parallels with French martyr
It might just be Sarah Palin's last chance to re-establish herself as a viable presidency candidate ahead of the 2012 Us elections in the wake of a disastrous PR run. A new film commissioned by Palin, the former governor of Alaska, will present her as a Joan of Arc-like figure beset at every turn by vicious leftwing enemies seeking to thwart her ambition of reviving the conservative legacy of Ronald Reagan.
The Undefeated has been shot by rightwing film-maker Steven K Bannon, who met the documentary's $1m costs from his own pocket. Palin initially reached out to the director with the aim of recruiting him to work on videos pushing her cause, but Bannon offered to make a feature-length film instead.
Rife with religious imagery, the movie will chart Palin's rise...

Easter is here, which means it's time for flamboyantly gay hats to courageously come out of the closet, and time to ogle Hollywood's hottest Jesi!
Jesus is one of the most coveted roles in show business, but it's not for the timid. To succeed, you have to make us believe you're willing to die for our sins. Not stub your toe for our sins, not get a nasty paper cut for our sins, but you have to convince us you're willing to get nailed ... so we can do the same.
The actors on the following pages all have that Original Sinnocence™, that combination of piousness and grungy hotness. Take a look at our Calvacade of Christ, and decide which one deserves to be crowned awarded "Sexiest Jesus!"
Jeremy Sisto in Jesus
Jesus was a 1999 four-hour NBC mini-series that featured Jeremy in the title role and Debra Messing as the spunkiest Mary Magdalene in history.

This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. It’s lucky 13 for the Boston Underground Film Festival as they celebrate their raucous 13th annual edition this year. Opening with the much buzzed about bloody feature film Hobo With a Shotgun starring Rutger Hauer and directed by Jason Eisener, the fest then barrels on for eight wild nights and days from March 24-31.
While there’s plenty of underground goodness from the U.S.A., this year Buff feels like it’s a much more international affair with several sick features from around the globe. There’s gory horror and quirky black comedy from Japan in the guise of Yoshihiro Nishimura’s Helldriver and Sion Sono’s Cold Fish; the Argentinian freak-out Phase7 by Nicolas Goldbart; David Blyth’s Wound is a psychological thriller from New Zealand; and Mark Hartley’s Machete Maidens Unleashed! is a look at Philippine exploitation cinema from the ’70s.

Prom
Opens: April 29th 2011
Cast: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang
Director: Joe Nussbaum
Summary: Portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott, it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events.
Analysis: Disney's attempt at creating the next "High School Musical" franchise for itself, this teen romantic comedy is a batch of clique cliches - the beauty queen, the rebel with better hair than anyone else in the film, the handsome yet dumb foreign exchange student, the 'so above it' geek who really wants to belong, and at least one or two 'fugly' girls.
It's all very "The Breakfast Club" meets "10 Things I Hate About...

Two new books argue that the good book isn't the squeaky-clean endorsement of no-sex-until-marriage that conservatives say it is. In this week's Newsweek, Lisa Miller reports on the surprise findings.
The poem describes two young lovers aching with desire. The obsession is mutual, carnal, complete. The man lingers over his lover's eyes and hair, on her teeth, lips, temples, neck, and breasts, until he arrives at "the mount of myrrh." He rhapsodizes. "All of you is beautiful, my love," he says. "There is no flaw in you."

The girl returns his lust with lust. "My lover thrust his hand through the hole," she says, "and my insides groaned because of him."
This ode to sexual consummation can be found in-of all places-the Bible. It is the Song of Solomon, a poem whose origins likely reach back to the pagan love...

A Picture Might Be Worth A Thousand Words. Too Bad One Of Them Wasn't "Gay"
While it's ludicrous to say anything "positive" came out of the horrible shooting in Tucson last week, those events have given the Glbt community one very remarkable development — a bona fide hero who happens to be an out gay man. That hero is twenty-year-old University of Arizona student Daniel Hernandez, Jr. who is being so lauded for his actions that he not only spoke at the memorial for the victims on Wednesday night, but sat to the right of President Obama.
I confess that because I've been attending the TCA in Los Angeles this week, I haven't been able to follow the coverage as much as I would've liked. So what I can't say with any certainty is whether or not the fact that Hernandez is gay has been widely reported. I do know, however,...

Cast: Forest Whitaker, Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman, Nikki Reed, Deborah Ann Woll
Director: Aaron Harvey
Summary: The story focuses on three women being thrust into an extraordinary situation involving a psychopathic hitman, a grizzled trucker and a delusional line cook.
Analysis: Oddly little is known about this indie crime comedy aside from the three lead female roles have gone through more than a couple of rounds of casting musical chairs. The likes of Maggie Grace, Kate Mara, Laura Ramsey, Sarah Roemer, Lizzy Caplan and Lauren German were all attached at one point or another before the final trio of Malin Akerman ("Watchmen"), Nikki Reed ("Twilight") and Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") were settled on.
Bruce Willis, Forest Whitaker, Michael Rosenbaum and Brad Dourif also star with Willis as a crime boss behind everything that happens and Whitaker as a dangerously unstable assassin. Aaron Harvey, who last directed...

Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina claimed they wanted to help the world by dipping their toes into politics-but their failed races were mostly about ego. How could they have better spent a combined $217 million? How about college tuition for 23,000? Or school lunches for 15 million? The Daily Beast's Gail Sheehy crunches the numbers.
In a year that broke all the records for money spent on campaigns, some candidates threw away enough of their own wealth to make even Mayor Bloomberg blush. Take Jeff Greene, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Florida, who spent $23,808,789, with only about $4,000 coming from outside contributions. Each of the 284,948 votes cast in his favor cost $83.55.

Then there are the women. This election was really a tale of three little girls who grew up to make so much money, they didn't know what to do with it.
