Despite a sizable outcry from devoted fans, East New York ended its one-season run on CBS Sunday.
The Warner Bros. TV series from creators William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn wrapped with a sentimental gathering of its leads having one last drink together — Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (the terrific Amanda Warren), Assistant Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits), Det. Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez), Det. Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin), Officer Brandy Quinlan (breakout Olivia Luccardi), Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) and Capt. Stan Yenko (Richard Kind).
Yenko gave a toast to Haywood, who thanked her for bringing him back onto the force where he “came to love it all over again.” His words brought Haywood to tears.
The episode wrapped up a double homicide from the previous episode in Ruskin Gardens, where Quinlan had been living as part of Haywood’s unique initiative to have officers live in crime-ridden areas.

It was good news-bad news day for CBS drama viewers yesterday. Fans of S.W.A.T. rejoiced when the network reversed its cancellation decision and renewed the veteran procedural for a 13-episode seventh and final season. But that tipped the scale for another CBS cop drama, freshman East New York, which was canceled shortly after. And in a case of bad timing, by being axed during a writers strike, East New York is far less likely to get a reprieve.
While not as established as S.W.A.T., East New York, starring Amanda Warren, has developed a loyal following, and its cancellation has sparked a backlash, especially in light of the fact that the cop show drew bigger linear numbers than two other CBS drama series that have been renewed for next season, fellow freshman So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas, both of which come from CBS’ sister studios CBS Studios.

Police procedural East New York and action comedy True Lies have been canceled at CBS after just one season, with both series set to end their runs this month. According to Deadline, there were lengthy renewal negotiations between CBS and East New York‘s lead studio, Warner Bros. Television, including disputes over streaming rights. It seemed like a renewal was likely after Friday when the network canceled the long-running drama S.W.A.T.; however, following fan backlash, CBS reversed its decision. East New York and S.W.A.T. were competing for the same spot, and while the latter is more expensive, it has proven to have a loyal audience. Deadline reports that S.W.A.T.‘s established fan base and solid ratings performance factored into the final decision. Created by William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn, East New York centers on the officers and detectives of the NYPD’s 74th precinct in the Brooklyn neighborhood of East...

CBS has canceled both the police procedural “East New York” and “True Lies” after just one season.
According to sources, the decision to cancel the series came down to CBS haggling with the series’ studio Warner Bros. Television over the show’s budget, which included CBS asking that the cast of the show not get the customary pay increases going into the second season. It has previously been reported that CBS has renewed other shows on its lineup, like the comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” after asking the cast to take pay cuts or by shifting series regulars to recurring status.

CBS has canceled cop drama East New York, starring Amanda Warren, after one season.
The decision comes after CBS today reversed its Friday decision to cancel S.W.A.T., renewing the veteran drama for a 13-episode seventh and final season.
It also follows lengthy renewal negotiations between the network and East New York‘s lead studio, Warner Bros. Television. In addition to the inevitable squabbles over budget, there was an additional business issue that complicated talks. As Deadline reported, it had to do with additional streaming rights CBS had requested that go beyond the now-standard stacking, which allows networks to stream current season of their series on their digital platforms.

However, progress had been made and East New York‘s renewal prospects went up Friday when CBS, somewhat surprisingly, canceled long-running drama S.W.A.T. However, following backlash from fans, S.W.A.T. was uncanceled.

CBS’ 2023-24 season is starting to come into focus.
The network has opted to cancel its last two remaining bubble shows, True Lies and East New York, both of which ran a single season. True Lies, a reboot of the film of the same name, will air its series finale May 17, while procedural East New York will wrap May 14.
Reps for CBS declined comment.
The decisions come as CBS is poised to announce series orders for the upcoming 2023-24 broadcast season on Tuesday, with its fall schedule set to be announced Wednesday. For the first time in recent memory, CBS and parent company Paramount Global backed out of its traditional upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers with that slot now occupied by Netflix.

Exclusive: Christine Holder and Mark Holder are no longer executive producers of the new CBS drama series East New York, from Warner Bros Television.

CBS is wasting little time in locking down its trio of first-year scripted shows.
The network has extended the orders for East New York, Fire Country and So Help Me Todd after promising starts for all three. CBS is calling the extensions “full season orders,” though it hasn’t set episode counts for the trio. In the era of shorter season orders, a full run can mean anything from 15 or 16 episodes to the once-standard 22.
The pickups for the three shows come as little surprise, as Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd are the three most watched rookie network shows of the 2022-23 season so far. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Fire Country drew 8.26 million viewers over seven days for its series debut. Arriving two years after anti-police brutality protests ushered in a surge of self-examination around Hollywood’s enduring love affair with cop shows, CBS’ East New York tries to have it both ways.
On the one hand, it’s a procedural in the familiar hero-officer mold, focusing on a righteous protagonist doing everything in her power to do right by the community she’s serving. On the other, it tries, gingerly, to grapple with thorny issues like the inequality of criminal justice in America and the deeply damaged relationship between civilians and law enforcement. But there’s only so far the series is able or willing to push up against the limits of its own genre, and East New York proves to be far more successful in replicating its comforts than in tackling its dark side.

Jimmy Smits is fired up. As Police Chief John Suarez, he’s filming CBS‘ new police drama East New York in the Brooklyn neighborhood where he grew up and reuniting with executive producers William Finkelstein and Michael M. Robin, friends from his L.A. Law and NYPD Blue days. “I trust them, where their hearts are in terms of where they want to go with this piece. Bochco alums emeritus!” the actor crows, referring to Steven Bochco, cocreator of those series. The veteran actor was also drawn to East New York, he says, “Because looking at the role of law enforcement and the idea of policing in these times fascinates me.” Of his character, Smits says, “Suarez is a rock — politically savvy, but realizes there needs to be change.” That’s why he’s handpicked a deputy inspector to head the 74th Precinct, a mostly minority area that requires fresh thinking to bring down crime rates.

It’s time to start saying goodbye to the women and men of “The Good Fight,” and they appear to be going out with lots of wine, some virtual sexy talk, and a hefty dose of déjà vu.
Paramount+ dropped the trailer for the sixth and final season of the series on Wednesday morning, a little over a month ahead of its Thursday, Sept. 8 premiere.
The new season, which spans 10 episodes, will see Diane Lockhart feeling like she’s going crazy, and struggling with that déjà vu over the overturning of Roe v. The network upfronts are once again front-and-center for the television industry as major players gather in New York May 16-19 for the springtime ritual of presenting programming plans for the upcoming TV season.

This week, we will be taking a look at Werner Herzog’s ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans’. For the story behind the genesis of Canon Of Film, you can click here.
Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (2009)
Director: Werner Herzog
Screenplay: William Finkelstein
If there ever was a better example of how to show the old adage true that it’s not what the film is about but rather, how it’s about it… Abel Ferrara’s 1992 masterpiece ‘Bad Lieutenant‘, took place on the streets of New York and starred Harvey Keitel as a “bad lieutenant”. He wasn’t even given a name in the film. He did every drug he could, he pulled over women to sexually harass them, he screwed hookers, and gambled large amounts of money. In between, he tries to solve a crime, haphazardly involving the rape of a local nun. I met...

Why should Chicago have all the legal drama fun? Co-creator Steven Bochco is rebooting the L.A. Law TV show with original series writer William M. Finkelstein. Bochco broke the news on the August 1 episode of The Rich Eisen Show. He expects to have the script finished in October. If it gets greenlit, they will make a pilot in late winter/early spring 2017. Watch the interview, below.Explaining how the reboot came about, Bochco said, "I called my friends at Fox, because they own the show. They were very interested in having a conversation. And so Billy and I sat down and we sort of re-conceptualized what L.A. Law would look like, and be about, 30 years later." He added that some of the original series cast could return. Director Ruben Fleischer bent the notions of the zombie genre with "Zombieland," so I'm looking forward to seeing his next film, "Gangster Squad" starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn from a script written by Will Beall and William Finkelstein (previous draft).
From Warner Bros. Pictures, "Gangster Squad" tells the true-life tale of the underground battle between the Lapd and East Coast gangsters in the 40s.
The trailer looks explosive, and of course, this is an Oscar-bait to be released during awards season, Oct. 19.

Chicago – 2010 is clearly the year of New Orleans with a Saints Superbowl victory, HBO’s highly acclaimed “Treme” debuting this Sunday and the highly underrated and somewhat excellent “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” starring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow, April 6th, 2010.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Expertly directed by one of the best living filmmakers, Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” “Rescue Dawn”), this bizarre remake/spin-off of the Abel Ferrara/Harvey Keitel drama defies all expectations that rebooting a film that didn’t really demand a reboot was a really bad idea. When most of us heard that Nicolas Cage was doing another remake (after the disastrous “The Wicker Man”) and given his recent track record, we approached Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant” with a raised eyebrow.

Nicolas Cage is ill-served by this very silly movie.
Xzibit and Nicolas Cage in "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans"

Do fish have dreams? Do they dream of ominous iguanas, perhaps? Or maybe the disembodied breakdancing souls of freshly capped gangsters? More to the point, will Nicolas Cage ever make another movie that makes sense? Judging by his new one, "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," and considering his current financial straits, the prospects seem dim.
The director — the esteemed Werner Herzog, stupefyingly enough — claims never to have seen Abel Ferrara's original 1992 "Bad Lieutenant," and I think we can take him at his word. The Ferrara movie, which I'd recommend seeing before — or better yet instead of — this one, concerns a viciously bent New York City cop; and Harvey Keitel, in the title role, is the embodiment of rank, skeezy corruption. In Herzog's take on the story,...

The players: Director: Werner Herzog, Writer: William M. Finkelstein, Cast: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Xzibit
Facts of interest: Won the Christopher D. Smithers Award in Venice.
The plot: The film follows a corrupt New Orleans cop who's addicted to drugs and tries to solve a brutal murder.
Our thoughts: Nicolas Cage is really bad in Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” and I’m so glad and relieved he is. It’s great to see him back in total control of an intriguing role after a whole bunch of recent failures, and he’s undoubtedly the main reason this film worked for me so well. In other words, Cage totally delivers the goods.

Not many people say it, but Nicolas Cage gets a bad rap. Often, even from me. Sure, he’s made some questionable script choices in the past, and been known for a few colorful and even over-the-top performances, but if there’s one thing he is known for, it’s consistency in a role. That’s exactly what he brings to the table with Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
The film is an almost-modern-day reboot of the 1992 film starring Harvey Keitel. This time, rather than the rough streets of New York City, the setting has been changed to a post-Katrina New Orleans, with crime high and morals low, the only thing left to keep the streets safe is a deranged lieutenant on a path to his own personal hell.
There are certainly many problems with the film, which we’ll go into, but the most important positive thing...

Envy me, because Werner Herzog's "The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" is more fun to write about than it is to watch, and it is barrel-of-monkeys fun to watch. Everything about it is wrong, so wrong that categorizing it that way is meaningless, but wrong nonetheless, down to its title (that awkward "the" on the film's opening title card, that anachronistic and irrelevant "port of call," the subtitle itself, erroneously suggesting sequel-hood, etc.).
Of course, the film has no relation to the 1992 Abel Ferrara film, except it involves a police detective who is "bad," insofar as he dopes, gambles and isn't very effective as a cop. In the first film, the character's self-immolation was an existential passion; here it's... I don't know what it is. Herzog was brought on as a director-for-hire (which is very wrong, in the grand cultural scheme of things), after screenwriter William Finkelstein ("Doogie Howser,...

Werner Herzog Brings The Music Back
By
Alex Simon
Academy Award-nominated German film director, screenwriter, actor and opera director Werner Herzog was born Werner H. Stipetić on 5 September 1942 in Munich. His family moved to the remote Bavarian village of Sachrang in the Chiemgau Alps after the house next to theirs was destroyed during bombing towards the close of World War II. When he was twelve, he and his family moved back to Munich. The same year, Herzog was told to sing in front of his class at school and adamantly refused. He was almost expelled for this and until the age of eighteen listened to no music, sang no songs and studied no instruments. He would later say that he would easily give ten years from his life to be able to play an instrument. At fourteen, he was inspired by an encyclopedia entry about film-making which he says provided...

One of the few good things I can say about Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is that it has restored my faith in Nicholas Cage. His drug induced erratic moments and over the top enthusiasm could have made this a winner but the filmmaker is more concerned with plot and narrative than the viewer's enjoyment. Damn, what a shame. This could have been a seriously great character study, or better yet, a black comedy but in the end, even the surreal sequences and the great ending don't save this mediocrity from the scrap heap.
Post-Katrina, Lt. Terence McDonagh (Cage) has a back problem. It's loosely implied that he uses drugs, mainly cocaine, to alleviate the pain, an addiction that started with Doctor prescribed Vikodin. He also likes to gamble and regularly...

Not many people are fans of Nicolas Cage. It could be that his hair is a bird, or that he has been known for many poor film choices like Wicker Man, Next, Knowing, Bangkok Dangerous, World Trade Center or Ghost Rider. The trailer for his newest film, however, doesn’t look half bad — even if it is a remake.
Bad Lieutenant is a remake of the 1992 film starring Harvey Keitel about a cop who walks the line of moral and amoral, drinking and gambling along the way. The idea may feel a bit beaten to death for anybody who watched all 6 seasons of FX’s The Shield, but director Werner Herzog is pushing through regardless.
The script was adapted (or copy-and-pasted) by a veteran of the world of police drama, William Finkelstein, who’s writing credits date all the way back to 1990 with Cop Rock. This remake also changes the...

In his schlocky paycheck movies, of which there are way too many, Nicolas Cage often pumps up his energy in a false, blowhard way. He glowers and throws tantrums and over-italicizes his emotions, as if trying to prove to his audience (or maybe to himself) that he's still got it, that he really means it, man. He does the same thing in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Werner Herzog's demon-rich, loopy, fascinating, and improbably entertaining remake of the 1992 Abel Ferrara dark-side-of-everything cult classic. The difference is that Cage is now doing his strenuous, bug-eyed intensity thing in character. He plays a New Orleans homicide detective named Terence McDonagh who gets hooked on drugs -- mostly cocaine and heroin -- and is always getting high, on the job and off. Unlike the Harvey Keitel character in Ferrera's film, McDonagh first comes to his addiction "innocently," when he's given...

Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage is to star in a remake of 1992 film "Bad Lieutenant," the grim drama which stoked controversy for its explicit depictions of sex and drug use. Entertainment industry journal Daily Variety reported that the film, which featured Harvey Keitel as the lead in the original, would be directed by acclaimed German film-maker Werner Herzog. Drawing elements from the original film, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans features a crooked cop (Nicolas Cage) who is a drug addict and takes sexual favors for bribes. The script for the remake was penned by TV writer William Finkelstein. One major change from the original film was moving the setting from New York City to New Orleans. Herzog insists that the film is not a remake, saying, "It only has a corrupt policeman as the central character and that's about it." Herzog went on to say that he has never seen Ferrara's film.
