Why, God, why did Matt LeBlanc say yes to this?
For whatever reason, CBS is using its fall 2016 season to hammer in three overly familiar sitcom staples (the aging white man) all featuring sitcom stars who obviously reached their prime some time ago.
Kevin Can Wait has Kevin James on camera complaining about how he doesn’t fit into this modern world anymore, The Great Indoors does the same with Joel McHale albeit sans-Dan Harmon, and Man with a Plan is probably the weakest of the bunch, if only because it seems to have no idea what its own hook is beyond a premise that could easily fit within the constraints of one episode, not an entire series.

Gary Anthony Williams has been added to the cast of Greg Daniels’ comedy pilot Friday Night Dinner. The single-camera project, based on the British format, centers on a quirky family that has dinner together every Friday night and stars Allison Janney and Tony Shalhoub as matriarch Jackie and patriarch Martin. Williams, repped by Don Buchwald/Fortitude, Roar and attorney Lev Ginsburg, will play Mr. Marley, the neighbor who frequently shows up at the family’s front step and appears infatuated with Jackie. The character was originally named Koechner and written for actor-comedian David Koechner. In January, NBC signed Koechner in a talent holding deal with NBC. Under it, he was to do Friday Night Dinner or do more episodes of The Office, where he has appeared occasionally since the second season. When Fnd was officially picked up to pilot a week later, the neighbor character was not put out for casting.

Kal Penn has been tapped as the lead in ABC’s comedy pilot Prairie Dogs. The single-camera project, from writers/executive producers Jackie and Jeff Filgo and ABC Studios, centers on Neil (Penn), an uncool cubicle worker aka “prairie dog” at one of the coolest companies in the world who becomes the victim of identity theft. I hear that Penn’s casting in the pilot has a development deal behind it, meaning that ABC would develop another project for him should Prairie Dogs not make it to series. Harold & Kumar‘s Penn, who co-starred on Fox’s medical drama House before he left acting for a 2-year stint at the White House, had a development deal at NBC earlier this season.

ABC has added two more comedy pilots to it slate — the Reba McEntire starrer Malibu Country and Prairie Dogs, from That ’70s Show alums Jackie and Jeff Filgo. Both projects are produced by ABC Studios. The orders bring the number of in-cycle ABC comedy pilots so far this season to 10. Malibu Country is a multicamera comedy starring the country star/actress as Reba who, after her “good ol boy” rock star husband cheats on her and burns through most of their money, divorces him and moves her family from Nashville to the only asset she has left — a little house in Malibu. There she’ll try to reignite her own singing career and keep herself and her three kids from being corrupted by the materialistic and rarefied Malibu world she now calls home. The project, which had a put pilot commitment, reunites McEntire with key auspices of her successful 2001 the WB sitcom Reba.

Take Me Home Tonight
Stars: Topher Grace, Dan Fogler, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer | Written by Jackie and Jeff Filgo | Directed by Michael Dowse
Ah the 80s, still my favourite decade. There was just something about the music, the television and the movies. Especially the movies. The decade that brought us some of the greatest action movies, horror movies and teen movies ever made, and some of my all-time favourite flicks of all time. So whenever anything 80s-related rolls around, be it a TV show like That 80s Show or a movie like Take Me Home Tonight, my interest is always peaked – however my interest is not always rewarded…
Thankfully Take Me Home Tonight rewards my love of the 80s in spades!
The film follows a night in the life of Matt Franklin (Grace) a recent graduate from MIT, but instead of becoming the successful engineer that his father wishes him to be,...

Take Me Home Tonight **
Stars: Topher Grace, Dan Fogler, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer | Written by Jackie and Jeff Filgo | Directed by Michael Dowse
John Hughes made some of the best teen movies of the 80s. His work is often imitated but rarely equalled (although credit must go to the recent Easy A for being a film worthy of its roots). And so we come to Take Me Home Tonight, a teen movie set in the 80s which seems to have all the trappings of Hughes’ oeuvre but without any of his sharply observed wit or humour.
Aimless MIT graduate Matt Franklin, instead of getting a job in engineering like his dad wants, now works in his local video store. He’s still obsessed with his high school sweetheart Tori (Palmer) and so his heart leaps when she’s seen browsing the racks. Desperate not to seem like a loser, he...

After spending untold amounts of cash on hundreds of dramas and comedies — most of which will never make it to your living rooms — the five broadcast networks will begin announcing in New York next week which projects are good enough to earn a coveted fall pickup. (NBC and Fox will present their fall schedule to advertisers on Monday, followed by ABC on Tuesday, CBS on Wednesday and the CW on Thursday).
Buzz is already strong for several projects (for more on the hot ones, click here). But every year, we always wonder what diamond-in-the-rough was left on the cutting room...

Which project has the right stuff? What pilot already has you feeling like you popped a Lunesta? Check out the mammoth slate for fall consideration. (And remember, all projects are whittled down in late April/early May before the nets present their fall slates to advertisers in New York):

Pilot season is in full swing: Casting has been going hot and heavy for weeks now, and cameras either have started rolling or will soon for most of the 82 shows in development.
And like every pilot season, there are some trends emerging in the projects the broadcast networks have ordered, in addition to the usual array of cop shows and medical dramas. Some are easy to explain (the networks all want their own "Modern Family" or "Glee"), others less so (what's with all the fairy-tale stuff?). Here's what you may be seeing come fall.
Once upon a time ...
The networks got tired of vampires and decided to expand their otherworldly horizons. There is, in fact, a show called "Once Upon a Time" (which stars Jennifer Morrison, at left in the photo) in development at ABC, and like several others in the pipeline, it's set in a world where fairy-tale legends...

TheMoviePool reviews the latest 80s nostalgia film Take Me Home Tonight, to help you decide if it’s worth the trip to the theater. Is it just another period-based romantic comedy covering up unoriginal storyline with clichés, or a story with substance?
The Set-up
This is the story of Matt Franklin, a college graduate from MIT living with his parents in Los Angeles who really does not know what he wants out of life and is willing to settle from a sub-par existence working for Suncoast video store until he gets some perspective on things. In walks his high school crush, Tori Frederking, and the lies begin. He makes up a fake career, gets invited to the party of the year hosted by his sister’s boyfriend, and has the time of his life. However, when things heat up between the two, will he tell her the truth? Will they...

And the winner of the Becki Newton pilot sweepstakes is ... CBS.
Newton, formerly of "Ugly Betty," will star in a CBS comedy pilot (previously known as "Homegrown") from "That '70s Show" veterans Jackie and Jeff Filgo, according to several reports. She had been one of the more sought-after actresses this development season, getting offers for several shows.
The one that she took is a family comedy in which she'll play a single mom with a 12-year-old son who moves back in with her parents. The crowded household also includes her dad's recently widowed mother.
Had things broken differently, you might be seeing Newton on your TV now instead of (potentially) next season. She was one of the stars of NBC's star-crossed "Love Bites," which was picked up for this season but for a number of reasons -- one of which was Newton's pregnancy -- has never aired. It may run in the summer.

Becki Newton was much sought-after this pilot season despite/because of her Love Bites dramedy getting sidelined before having a chance to leave the starting gate. CBS has ended up landing the actress for untitled multi-camera pilot about a blue-collar father who lives under the same roof with his recently widowed mother, his unmarried daughter, and her 12-year-old son. Newton will play the grown-up daughter on the show. That ’70s Show team Jackie and Jeff Filgo will write and produce.

If you're going to set your 80s comedy in the same fictional universe as the classic 80s comedies of John Hughes, you better make sure your movie is good enough to withstand the comparison. "Take Me Home Tonight" just isn't. Its characters are graduates of Shermer High -- the same fictional school where Hughes set movies like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" -- which means Topher Grace's Matt might have shared classes with Alan Ruck's Cameron Frye and Dan Fogler's Barry could have been locker neighbors with Judd Nelson's John Bender. But I have a hard time imagining anyone twenty-five years from now making their own homage to "Take Me Home Tonight," or, for that matter, even remembering this mediocre comedy at all.

Becki Newton, one of the most in-demand actresses of the past two pilot seasons, has chosen her spring project, an untitled comedy for CBS. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Ugly Betty" veteran has landed one of the leads in the pilot formerly known as "Home Grown" from "That '70s Show" creators Jackie and Jeff Filgo. The pilot focuses on a husband and father who lives under the same roof as his wife, recently widowed mother, fully grown daughter (Newton) and her son. The pilot will be directed by busy sitcom veteran Andy Ackerman. Last development season,...

Chicago – Nostalgia films need a couple of elements to make them work. First, instant recognition with the era, and second, a reason to go there. “Take Me Home Tonight” lacks both characteristics, and lead actor Topher Grace can’t seem to light a fire under the rest of it.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
This film is set in the late 1980s, although the timeline is quite vague. As in most look-back scenarios, there are a parade of fashions from the era, conveniently set up in a big party scene. Even though the costumes and the soundtrack kept telling us it’s the ‘80s, it never felt that way, and the romantic comedy narrative could have been set in last week.
Topher Grace portrays Matt Franklin, a nebbish post-college graduate still pining for Tori (Teresa Palmer), his high school crush. Despite the background that he is a whip-smart MIT engineering graduate, he still lives...

The future of "Two and a Half Men" is, let's say, cloudy at the moment.
If we had to guess right now, we'd say that the show, which is currently the most-watched comedy on TV, will be back in some form -- with or without Charlie Sheen -- for 2011-12. CBS will announce its lineup for next season in mid-May, which means the network, Warner Bros. TV, creators Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn and Sheen have about two and a half months to figure out what happens next.
But what if the worst-case scenario for CBS happens and "Men" doesn't come back at all?
Yes, the network would probably suffer some in the ratings -- but it would probably also come out Ok. CBS also has the No. 2 and 3 comedies in terms of viewers in "The Big Bang Theory" and "Mike & Molly"; both shows are also in the Top 25 this...

Chicago – Reliving the 1980s is what Topher Grace, ironically known for “That ‘70s Show,” set out to do with the story line for his new film, “Take Me Home Tonight.” Comedian Demetri Martin has a supporting role in that film.
Grace developed the original story, about a post-collegiate guy named Matt working in a video store, trying to figure out the next stage of his life. When he encounters a high school crush named Tori (Teresa Palmer), he makes up a scenario where he works for the investment film Goldman Sachs. He then catches up to an actual Goldman Sachs employee, played by Demetri Martin, to back up his story. The rest of the movie is basically about Matt working through the deception.

CBS may not have a project like Wonder Woman that’s eating up all the headlines, nor does it have a much-anticipated reboot in the works that has fans hoping for the best (and even anticipating the worst). But the No. 1 network (in viewers) doesn’t need to make a lot of noise with its fall 2011 development, especially when it continues to succeed with tried-and-true formats featuring law dogs and crime-fighting duos.
