The Creator (2023)
John David Washington is overrated
It's tragic, more and more big budget movies are ruined by the bad performances of the lead actors/actresses. John David Washington just isn't good enough as an actor, he is not energetic enough, charismatic enough and almost in every scene acts like he is watching his own movie instead of being the most important part in the movie. He is moving his body quite strange too, more like a frightened, exhausted and not much interested child than a tough veteran who wants to save his love and the world. The story is weak too! The AIs are much too human and good. They don't harm anybody, are good "people", cry, are sad, happy, smile and look exactly like humans with the only difference, the hole in the neck. As a viewer you think: the AIs are really wonderful, better than the humans, so why killing them? It's obvious that they weren't responsible for the Nuclear Bomb. The whole movie makes no sense.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Terrible performance by Phoebe Waller-Bridge
This film and PWB's acting performance are a prime example of how an otherwise good film becomes unwatchable and a flop because of a single actor/actress.
PWB lacks the charisma for the big screen!
She is not funny enough when humor is needed, not serious enough when drama is needed, when eroticism is needed she is not sexy enough and for fights and action sequences not boyish enough.
One scene at the end of the film sums up her poor performance:
Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones stands in front of Archimedes (Nasser Memarzia) and can hardly believe his luck - the two actors play this scene, in which two humans, who are separated by 2000 years, meet, excellently. You realize the significance and gravitas of this moment. It was a goosebumps moment, until PWB came along. She seemed completely out of place, ridiculous, like a comic figure. She ruined this scene and took away its depth. She looked like a jumping jack from a bad children's theater performance.
Ahsoka (2023)
Rosario Dawson's performance is underwhelming
First episodes were quite interesting and I thought Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka will give more insights in her character and give it more depth and different aspects. But nothing happend! Her facial expressions are almost always the same: wise, arrogant and a bit bored. Unfortunately she plays Ahsoka also very very slowly, almost as if she had taken an antidepressant.
Sorry, but this isn't it for me. The main character of a Star Wars Series has to have a wider range of emotions. It's just boring and annoying if somebody is so stiff. And what's with the crossed arms in so many scenes? Is this the new way to express the superiority of a Jedi Master?
There were scenes where the robots stole the show because Dawson once more smirked and looked wise.
Dune (2021)
Reminds me of Blade Runner 2049 - UNFORTUNATELY!
It is an alarm signal when I as a viewer get the feeling that the film music and epic pictures are being used for the sole reason to give the whole film more tension and magnificence in order to hide the fact that the film is simply told in a BORING way.
Instead of relying on a suspenseful story, Villeneuve underlays beautiful (landscape) shots with such a powerful, loud and dramatic music score that it tore me out of the story every time and I began to think about why these scenes, which were rather insignificant for the process of the story, had such a dramaturgy.
It almost seems as if Villeneuve is afraid that his movie would be too boring without.
Blade Runner 2049 had the same problem!
Villeneuve seems to use epic images and a dramatic and loud soundtrack to distract from the fact that he just doesn't have what it takes to tell exciting and good stories!
Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
Time Of Change - TSP steels the show!
Everyone knows this feeling, the feeling that a change is imminent, but YOU JUST CAN'T QUITE GRASP IT.
It's just a HUNCH that you only notice in yourself at first, then you start to notice it in other people too, sometimes it's just tiny behavioral characteristics, sometimes a word or a sentence that doesn't really fit into your current world view. But it's easy to forget until the signs become clearer over the years. One senses that this actually affects society as a whole, all people on earth.
And then, yes, then there comes a time when, for example, a film like this film suddenly acts like a CATALYST.
How we perceive everything that has been slumbering in all of us for so long, no, not just slumbering, but was also part of society's everyday life, a part, which was still somehow dismissed by the majority of society as a strange deviation or marginal phenomenon, how we suddenly perceive all of this as absolutely natural and PART OF BEING HUMAN.
And you ask yourself, frowning and incredulous: why on earth have we made SO MUCH FUSS for so long about same-sex, bi, queer, pan etc. Life concepts?
It strikes you how idiotic and backwards looking it was and what an absolute colossal WASTE OF TIME.
As if we were debating today whether to buy a car with a 12-cylinder or 8-cylinder combustion engine, while electric-, hydrogen- and solarcell driven vehicles rush past us and SHAPE the FUTURE.
OUTSTANDING performances by the main actors (great chemistry), but Taylor Sakhar Perez steals definitely the show, supporting actors are also very good, phenomenal film directing and writing!
Who would have thought that a romantic comedy has the power to change the world?
Well, these are life's ENCHANTING surprises :-)
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Emily Blunt's poor performance ruins the movie
Absolutely terrible performance by Emily Blunt. She portrays Mary Poppins as an arrogant, cold, humorless and boring woman without any compassion for the job she has to do: being a good nanny with a big heart! What did she think when she tried to incorporate Mary Poppins? That Mary Poppins is a self-centered, egoistic, narcissistic woman who hates being a nanny? That being a nanny is the most boring job on earth, but at least she can wear nice clothes and look permanently in the mirror to check if she is still beautiful? Emily Blunt should be very thankful that people are quite forgiving when it comes to her performances as an actress. Her performance as Mary Poppins would be under normal circumstances a career killer and the start of the end of the career of any actor.
The Mist (2007)
One of the most overrated movies ever
Directing, Pacing, Acting, Set, Script, Story, Animation - absolutely terrible.
This movie should be a role model for bad movie direction.
The story and dialogues drag on and on, the pacing is so wrong and slow that it is inevitable to press the fast forward button. A lot of cringe moments and the actions and decisions of the protagonists (if they are in action once in a while) are absolutely implausible. The pacing is almost non existent and so slow an static that you can build a house in the meantime.
Why introducing the wife of the main protagonist when she isnt mentioned anymore? Switching on all the lights to attract more monsters? Arguing about truth or lie for hours instead of going back to the garage (around 20 meter distant with one door to open) and showing the cut arm of the monster that came in the garage and killed the young man?
I could get on and on, but the end is the epitome of bad storytelling and direction. I think the director realized himself that his movie is a desaster and therefore choose this stupid and totally implausible ending to distract people from what happend before in his movie.
Worst and most overrated movie I watched in a long time.
Electric Dreams: Impossible Planet (2017)
My favorite episode - love the ending
Geraldine Chaplin is fantastic here. She gives the character so much depth and layers. The story is intriguing and i especially like the ending, that a lot people dislike. But there is a scene in this episode where Geraldine herself says, everything is explained to death, but fortunately what's in your heart, what you can feel can't be explained. She dreamed all of this and her dreams made her book this special spaceship with "Gordon" on it. It's up to the fantasy of the viewer what happens on "Earth" with both of them. Geraldine Chaplin gives her character so much depth, she carries the whole movie. Jack Reynor does a fine job too and the chemistry between the two of them is perfect.
Enterprise (2001)
Scott Bakula is unconvincing as captain
Star Trek Enterprise and Star Trek Discovery have the same problem: Both Scott Bakula as captain Archer and Sonequa Martin Green as Captain Burnham are not up to their task. Their acting skills are limited and they portray their roles in a totally unbelievable way. If one crew member isn't a good actor, it's still possible that the series will be great, because the writers can reduce the screen time of this special actor/crew member. But a bad performance of the Captain of a Star Trek Ship is the death of the series, because nothing can be decided without his/her permission and also because the whole crew revolves constantly around the Captain. Scott Bakula and Sonequa Marin Green could have been outstanding as a crew member, but as captains they are totally unbelievable and overwhelmed in terms of acting.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
Demoting Captain Pike to an idiot
Though the characters are far from established and the individual crew members still need time to earn their place on the ship, this episode - where the crew slips into totally different roles - was produced much too early. In the middle of the first season the viewer still has to get used to the ships crew, their individual characters, responsibilities and functions. It's heavy-handed and shows little tact for character development. And making an idiot out of Captain Pike is unforgivable in this early state. Even if SNW plays with flatter hierarchies, the captain remains an authority figure. Making him a clown and completely ridiculous prevents him from being taken seriously as Captain in future episodes, even if it's a fairy tale and he had to slip into another role.
The Orville: Future Unknown (2022)
I LOVE THE ORVILLE
My absolute favorite show and i love that after the action focused episode 9 in season 3 there is again a quieter episode following. I really care about the characters and stories and that's always a very good sign that a show is good and worth watching. The Orville is brilliantly written, actors are superb and in good (directors) hands, special effects, make up, costumes, set design, music - all is top notch. But the best of all is The Orville shows a lot of wonderful humor but is never superficial!
The Orville: Midnight Blue (2022)
FANTASTIC SHOW - best you can watch these days!
This show is the best you can watch these days. It has everything, even more: Great actors, perfect story telling, wonderful humor, top set design, thoughtfulness, great special effects, great dialogue, great sound effects and music and last but not least great emotions.
The Orville: A Tale of Two Topas (2022)
Absolutely outstanding episode and season
Seth MacFarlane is a genius. The Orville is the BEST science fiction show you can watch these days! All three seasons are just awesome! This episode is outstanding and everybody who votes this episode down is a person i don't want to ever have as a friend or in my close vicinity.
Foundation: The Emperor's Peace (2021)
Brilliant science fiction show!
The best science fiction show you can stream right now! The story is complex and intriguing, the world building is fantastic, the acting is superb, special effects are top notch! This show is massively underrated! Everybody who criticize it should watch Thor etc. It is one of the best i have ever seen! Thanks to all the people involved!
Foundation: The Leap (2021)
Amazing science fiction show!
The best science fiction show you can stream right now! The story is complex and intriguing, the world building is fantastic, the acting is superb, special effects are top notch! This show is massively underrated! Everybody who criticize it should watch movies from the Marvel univers. Thanks to all the people involved!
Star Trek: Picard: Mercy (2022)
This is bad
The actors are good but the script is horrible. Borg Queen in red dress runs amok in the city. Conversations leading nowhere and everything feels more like Denver Clan than Star Trek. This is as bad as Star Trek Discovery with the only difference that the acting doesn't suck / Burnham). I am out!
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
It's way better than the ratings may suggest
Suspenseful and it is getting better with time - always a good sign for the quality of a movie. It's better than Alien3 and the following Alien movies!
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
New Year's eve only comes once a year - for a good reason
At first I was impressed by this nice, chaotic family, the funny dialogues, crazy scenes and ideas. But after 15 minutes it started to annoy me. The jokes, the humour, the family dynamics - everything is brushed up to speed and amusement in such a way that it has exactly the opposite effect. I don't want to say that the film doesn't have its moments, but as a whole I find it too forced to be cool, young and hip. One has the feeling that the makers were terribly afraid if they slowed down, that nobody would be interested anymore. When every scene in a film wants to surpass the previous one, there is no tension anymore. If we had fireworks every day, no one would be watching.
Star Trek: Discovery: Coming Home (2022)
Is this abomination and kindergarten finally over???
Do you remember the turbolift scene? So much space that a whole planet could fit? Remember? One of thousands of silly and childish scenes in STD. Well, at Star Trek Discovery, nobody cares. Why? Because this show sucks and logic, good stories, believable acting are the least important things to the producers. The main thing is that the crew cries, whispers and hugs each other. It's the end of Season 4. Cancel it! You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Star Trek: Discovery: The Galactic Barrier (2022)
CANCEL IT!
The WORST show ever produced from the very first Episode 1/ Season 1 until now.
Everything has already been said and the myriad of problems of Star Trek Discovery have been explained in detail thousands of times.
So CANCEL IT and throw it finally in the trash can. NETFLIX already pulled the plug! It's an embarrassment for everybody!
Foundation (2021)
Brilliant show! This is great science fiction!
This show is absolutely brilliant! I binge watched it and loved every second of it!
Acting in general is very solid but the performances of Laura Birn as Demerzel, Lee Pace as Brother Day (absolutely outstanding!) and Lou Lovell as Gaal stand out.
I just love the world building, the special effects are top notch and the story is breathtaking! I love Isaac Asimovs books but I am at the same time very happy
that producers and directors paved the way for something new and exciting and they did an awesome job!
It's 2022 now and even though Asimov is one of the greatest science fiction authors, the writers of Foundation did a great job changing and developing it!
I especially liked the inner struggle of Demerzel and the ruthlessness of Brother Day (the performances of Laura Birn and especially Lee Pace get under your skin)
And last but not least: The soundtrack / music composed by Bear McCreary is really beautiful.
Hopefully there will be more seasons!
Being the Ricardos (2021)
Kidman becomes a caricature
It pains me to say it, but Nicole Kidman's wrinkle-free plastic face has reached the point where she comes off as Chucky the killer doll. Of course, she was supposed to resemble Lucy and her face was altered as a result, but since Kidman already has so much botox in her face in her private life, her facial expressions as Lucy can only be recognized by the blink of her eyes. Even in the series "Nine Perfect Strangers" her mask-like face bothered me extremely, because her acting was as usual good. It is tragic how the craving for eternal youth and everlasting beauty turns people into caricatures. Just look at Madonna's Instagram account. I thought Nicole Kidman would age gracefully for the love of her career and for herself. If she continues like this, she will suffer the same fate as Madonna, certainly with more style, but people will smile at her behind her back instead of admiring her.
The Silent Sea (2021)
Good but with pacing issues
Binge-watched it. Liked the intriguing and suspenseful story. Solid actors. CGI is good. Set design in my opinion great! Pacing unfortunately was often wrong. The fake walk in different gravity on the moon - well - not everything has to be perfect and i think it's because of budget reasons. But hey, if you have seen Star Trek Discovery EVERYTHING is GOLD to this trash. So, good attempt and i am looking forward to Season 2!
Cats (2019)
Tasteless / Awkward / Horrible
I streamed it for free today to make up my mind if all the negative reviews are right. Without a doubt - THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! It was a horrible experience and i was constantly pushing the button fast forward, cringed the whole time and couldn't believe what i saw and heard. EVERYTHING in this movie is and feels so WRONG. Songs, story, setting, cgi, acting, script, plot, makeup, camerawork, costumes etc. Its absolutely tasteless. They made - unintentionally - a horror movie and cats in general are portrayed in the most terrible and awkward way one can imagine. After this experience the amount of dog lovers will be rising - for sure!
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
NETFLIX pulled the plug after Season 3! KUDOS!
Star Trek Discovery performed abysmal - EVERYONE who watched only a single episode of this nonsense knows that. The actors, first and foremost Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham, are crybabies who - to put it mildly - deliver very mediocre to terrible acting performances (except Saru). Scripts are so horrible and free of logic that it is vomit inducing. The only good thing about this whiny kindergarten, which in my opinion shouldn't even call itself Star Trek, are the special effects.
NETFLIX pulled finally the plug. And therefore the streaming provider is all the more likeable to me.
Star Trek Discovery and Picard failed colossally! The reasons are clear to everyone who has any sense whatsoever and hopefully the responsible persons - especially Alex Kurtzman - will not be given again premature praise and a huge budget from Netflix anytime soon.
It's almost admirable how they squeezed so much unprofessionalism into a series. It will certainly be marketed as a soap opera in the future. This amateurish whining and hugging has absolutely NOTHING to do with Star Trek - not to mention the plotholes and Burnham, the most terrible and annoying character in film history.
