Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021)
A series - totalling 80 minutes
There are 4 episodes, so on a technicality this is a series. But I think most viewers would reasonably expect any series to last more than a total of 80 minutes. There's little suspense, and almost no action. This amounts to 80 minutes of cut scenes. And other reviewers' references to the blatant plagiarism lifted from Black Hawk Down are genuinely justified. The CGI is spot on, however this "series" is let down by everything else. Considering that teasers for this were coming out last year, it's no surprise that RE fans are frustrated and disappointed.
Unhinged (2020)
Gripping craziness
It's definitely best not to over-analyse this movie. If the protagonists had behaved even slightly rationally, the movie couldn't happen. But in terms of entertainment alone, it's lots of mindless silliness and fun, however ludicrous the story.
Capone (2020)
Truly dreadful
This film really is embarrassingly awful. Sorry, your review is too short. Sorry, your review is too short.
It's a Sin (2021)
Excellent
I have never experienced such a roller coaster of emotions watching any drama. The series is deeply enjoyable, but also devastating and upsetting. Such a tragically sad subject at its heart, and incredibly eye opening and horrendous to learn about how HIV / AIDS was dealt with by society so appallingly in the initial years. The series highlights the utter lack of understanding or compassion which was shown by many towards the illness and its victims in the 80s and beyond. A brilliantly produced series, which deals with some very real yet uncomfortable truths. Challenging, engrossing, and shockingly frank.
Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
A dark story told brilliantly
The key characters are portrayed excellently by the actors and with much skill. As such this ensures convincing and involving performances. This film benefits from having an original and engaging storyline throughout. The unexpected revelations towards the end of the film I found rather thought provoking. The delicate subject matter centering on the physical and mental abuse of a vulnerable person is handled well - illustrating how apparent friendship and jovial fun turned radically darker, and banter progressed onto abuse, with devastating consequences.
Overlord (2018)
Lots of fun!
Plenty of WWII themed war action, which sort of morphs into incredibly weird bio weapon horror as the film progresses. While graphic war horror and rated 18, it is all relatively lighthearted and rather silly. But still highly entertaining and engaging from start to finish.
Forbidden Ground (2013)
Disappointing
Lacking drama, suspense or much of a plot. This is slow and laborious, and it just doesn't carry any momentum or emotion. Unfortunately this movie just drags and I found it uninteresting, which is a shame, since some of the action scenes are very well done and there was definitely potential. I was hoping for more, but I wouldn't recommend this.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
RE Final Chapter
Changing camera shots several times each second isn't clever. Watching this film is frustrating since the story, action and effects are pretty spot on. But seriously, having action scenes where the images flicker intensely from shot to shot like some kind of crazed nightmare just ruins the whole experience.
The Escape Artist (2013)
The Escape Artist
Definitely an implausible storyline and utterly far fetched, but then many compelling dramas have peculiar twists, and often events would never happen in reality. So I wouldn't consider this to be a valid criticism. The principal cast are talented and accomplished, and the acting is the strongest element. The final episode seems to cram into the plot too many crucial aspects of the story that weren't suggested or introduced in any way during the preceding episodes. This gave the impression that the story was somewhat rushed towards the end. Setting out the storyline in greater depth earlier in the series would have allowed the whole thing to make more sense. However that would probably have required an additional episode, which presumably the producers wished to avoid.
From Hell (2001)
From Hell
The movie has so much to praise, so don't take any notice of the gloomy negativity in some reviews. Really brilliant and accomplished actors and great artistic production and direction. A romantic yet graphic and gritty portrayal of the Jack the Ripper murders which took place within the impoverished, decaying slums of Whitechapel District, London in 1888. The soundtrack of Trevor Jones also fits so well to capture the mood throughout the film perfectly.
Control (2007)
Way too much control
The movie is well written. I can see why some reviewers have questioned the B&W format. Maybe artistic. Maybe pretentious. Sometimes a little slow moving and static. The emotional trauma suffered by Ian Curtis that ultimately led to his suicide is not expressed very effectively. In the film his character is occasionally a bit tearful. But utter brutal depression and graphic hopelessness is what I believe should have been depicted towards the end. His desperate emotional decline just wasn't communicated. The film could have benefited from greater expression of feeling. Just a little too much control here, in my view.
Hangman (2017)
So disappointing
Nothing in this film makes any sense. Every single thing that happens defies all reason or logic. Really so poor and embarrassingly awful to explain here.
King Arthur: Excalibur Rising (2017)
Just terrible
I could only endure the first 20 minutes of this tragic disaster of a movie. During that time I realised just how appallingly bad this tripe is. It's like the director, camera operators etc. didn't even bother turning up during the filming, so presumably the actors just stuck a camera on a tripod and hoped for the best. This film should never have been released. I pity anyone who spends time watching this, as doing so will inevitably cause you to experience intense feelings of hopelessness, despair, and an overriding sense that in many ways humanity must take full responsibility for every evil in this world.
