Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
don't think, just watch
This movie was obviously made for those of us that grew up in the 1980's at a time when so many TV shows had a million rounds of ammo firing every week. From A-Team to Miami Vice to even cartoons like G.I. Joe. The big difference here is that the bullets actually make contact for an awesome show of blood and action.
The best thing about "Shoot 'Em Up" has to be the script. I read an article once where the director talked about how the script was written as a way to patch together all the action sequences. It might have seemed more trite in the wrong hands, but delivered by Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti it actually works. Far fetched, I'll admit, but still a wonderfully campy script soaked in fantastical action sequences. Who hasn't dreamed that they were as amazing a shot as the mysterious Mr. Smith? Top notch. Don't think art. Just think pulpy fun. And if I were Clive Owen, I'd just sit around watching it all the time... cause it makes him look that much cooler.
Sólo Dios sabe (2006)
a very visually stimulating movie
I just saw "God only knows" yesterday at the SF Int. Film Festival. While it starts off slow and feels like just another weak tale of romance, it picks up later with a strong twist and delivers a heartfelt message. A very strong independent film, with wonderful undertones and beautifully filmed. After the screening, the director Carlos was available for comments and it was clear to me that he had a strong vision for this movie and that it was definitely a piece close to his heart. The use of clocks, water, and living creatures that bind the movie together was an excellent choice. I would love to see this movie again, but that of course requires it to get better distribution.
Serenity (2005)
Loved this movie
"Firefly" is one of my favorite shows of all time. Joss Whedon has a way of weaving words and events that for me rivals David Sedaris. You almost feel violated, but in a good way, after enjoying their works. And this movie is no different. I took my little brother to see it (and he is not a fan of anything science fiction in any way) and he really enjoyed it. For anyone that wants a good story and an enjoyable movie experience, "Serenity" is a fantastic movie. In my mind, it will be the next "Princess Bride". A movie, that while it didn't do well in the theaters, gained so much ground in video rental that it is now considered a classic. I hope "Serenity" does the same.
