Saving Private Ryan (1998)
War never produces "winners"...
The opening scene alone should remind us that war never results in "winners," only the living and the dead and the traumatized and the maimed. And the Powers That Be that send them out to fulfill their agenda. Will we ever learn? This movie is a must-see for all who not only want to end war, but want to honor those who have been sacrificed and bravely died hoping to end all wars for all of us. We are reminded that while war is not honorable, human beings (both the "good guys" and the "bad guys") are, and every soldier has a home, a family, a history that is remembered by someone, somewhere. Saving Private Ryan reminds us that they should be remembered by all of us. With hope that the "war to end all wars" won't be the end of us all. Tom Hanks is his stellar self, Tom Sizemore is perfectly cast and Giovanni Ribissi (sp?) proves to be a perennially underrated gem of an actor. Thank you, Steven, for this incredibly realistic and important film.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Decent effort - watered down. Spoiler warning!
I enjoyed it about as much as I expected I would. After all, it is the 7th in a series, so to speak, and that doesn't usually mean Oscar-time. It seemed to be a very diluted version of a potentially rich story. So many myths, so little explanation or time. Also, I must admit, I get tired very quickly by movies that take place in that level of darkness. Couldn't we just suspend "reality" in order to see what's going on? Really enjoyed Sanaa Lathan's performance as our newest "Alien heroine." Feel a little dumb that it took me so long to see the queen vs. heroine fight coming a la Aliens I & II. Doubt I'll see this again until it hits late nite premium channels, as I don't think I'll care to add it to by DVD library.
Dead Weekend (1995)
Braindead Weekend
I simply cannot believe I sat through this whole thing. Talk about blind hope! Why did I think it would get better? I suppose I hoped that Stephen Baldwin would somehow rescue this mess. Not that I've ever seen him rescue any other lousy movie he's been in to date. I keep hoping he'll pick a winner.
This is simply one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Lame, preposterous plot. Wooden acting. Lousy cinematography. I sure hope these actors got paid well for a potentially career ending fiasco.
I hereby formally nominate it if you ever compile an updated "Worst Movies" list!
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
Still moves me more than any other movie of Christ's passion.
Jesus Christ Superstar as a "rock opera" has been a favorite of mine since the first album. I love this movie and this interpretation of that music better than any other version I have seen or heard. Ted Neeley, although smaller in stature than I believe Christ to have been, so vividly expresses the frustration, agony and despair that must have been felt. His performance in Gethsemane always moves me to tears. His voice, along with those of Yvonne Elliman, Carl Anderson and Barry Dennen is impeccable and soul-stirring. Superstar makes me FEEL the passion in a way no other movie (including Mel Gibson's) makes me feel. The sets are ancient and contemporary, as is the costuming. After all of these years, I still fail to see why the controversy over this piece. If you want a movie that produces catharsis - this one can do it!
