Last Shift (I) (2014)
3/10
Dumb cop has a bad night.
11 July 2023
Last Shift is a very basic movie that hits very basic beats that you have seen 1,000 times before.

Cop is alone in a "last night before closing" police precent building. Noises happen, spooky phone calls, "not sure if real" visions happen, things happen behind the character to specifically to scare the home viewer, in between this is some blatant exposition. If you have seen the Insidious/Sinister/etc movies you have seen most of it done better.

Probably the most absurd part of this is how dumb the main(and basically only) character acts, especially being a police officer. I've seen police call in backup to help on a traffic violation done by an elderly person, and this one won't call for it after being assaulted. I spent the whole movie (internally) yelling at the main character to stop doing dumb stuff and it takes you out of the movie.

Only real positives of the movie were the occasional decent makeup effect, and a few good, tense horror scenes which were greatly outnumbered by the dumb and the cliche. This one is a dud.

Kolobos (1999)
3/10
Feels like a troubled produciton.
27 June 2023
Kolobos doesn't really have much going for it. I watched it because I was in the mood for a gore movie and thats about all it really has that is good and even then not great.

The story follows a mix of conventional slasher tropes in an unconventional setting that might have been somewhat unique for it's time but been done many times since. Then there is the ending.

The ending(and certain scenes in peppered throughout the movie) made me feel like the movie was either too short or went bad with test audiences so they made this absurd B plot which added 20 minutes to the overall movie that led to a very unsatisfying end. You could remove it all and add a somewhat different ending, one in line with the rest of the movie, and no one would know the difference. Maybe this is a spoiler but the ending is VERY unsatisfying and can't answer the questions that the viewer naturally thinks of.

The characters are mostly insufferable and talk/act as if it was written by someone not of society. Maybe it's just the 90's aesthetic and 90's nature of the characters, but I lived through the 90's and nobody I know was like these folks. Maybe it's a case of an old person trying to write "hip" characters.

Another negative is the "slasher" with embarrassing makeup effects.

It's shot well and the gore is good but thats really all it has going for it. Any tension made by the film is ruined by the ending.

Don't watch this one, you will be upset that you did when the ending begins.

Kind of ok but very dumb.
9 May 2023
JC has an otherwise interesting premise with an interesting monster. But the execution of this one is lacking.

"Teens" get terrorized by a crazy truck on the road which leads them to making very stupid decisions like "lets go investigate what the crazy truck guy is doing." That is the crux of the movie and no rational person would ever do such a thing. As expected this results the teens being chased by the bad guy in the movie who makes victims of random people that attempt to help the teens escape the avoidable predicament that they put themselves in.

The main bad guy is pretty unique with a good enough backstory and a very cool/creepy lair.

The movie is a bit on the tamer side of gory and the ending makes little sense to me, as if no one finds this villain to be out of the ordinary despite murdering police in front of living police.

It's a decent horror film marred by stupidity to make the movie work.

Killer Party (1986)

A mediocre 80's college romp with a dose of weak horror
1 March 2023
This one is a bit of an anomaly in my opinion.

At it's core it's an 80's college romp. You have frats, sororities and the main characters whom are pledges. You have pranks, the mother hen, the uptight college staff(I don't think hes a dean), the jock, the nerd, etc. Pretty much every trope covered here but not enough details to establish characters anyone cares about.

Then sparingly throughout the film they reference a haunted frat house that the adults tell the kids to stay away from since a pledge died from a prank decades before. This house happens to have it's electricity turned on for some reason, maybe because the spirit inside is an electrician I don't know.

The kids decide to have a party at that house for some reason. The party starts and pretty much everyone from the sorority and fraternity gets killed by implied deaths. If it weren't for the nudity(and maybe some cursing) this could easily pass for PG-13. The ending has a twist that leads to another, much more predictable twist that will lead to more questions than answers.

Possibly the only thing this movie has going for it is that it feels professionally produced(shot/lit/etc.) There is a pretty cool stage shot which I assume ate up the majority of the budget.

In the end I feel this movie reeks of a film that didn't have any major direction to begin with and as a result ends up being a mess that is neither a fun college movie or a good horror movie.

Some decent ambiance and gore but not much more.
1 March 2023
A group of people go to a island that is most known for it's tourist season only to find it is abandoned. They find the reason turns out to be some guy with mud on his face that has superhuman strength.

The plot is very bare bones. There really isn't a good explanation as to why the whole island is uninhabited. There is a bad guy origin story but they don't explain why he has superhuman strength. The script probably took up all of 3 pages.

The bad guy(played by cheap Italian movie staple "George Eastman") is laughable. A guy who looks like he has mud on his face constantly making mean faces. In the end it just looks like a regular guy.

The gore is a bit dated but there are some great scenes. There is also a fantastic "jump scare" type scene. Some of the scenery and cinematography are great. Other than that the movie really doesn't have much to offer. The plot is thin, the dialogue is bland.

As far as Joe D'Amato films go you can do MUCH worse than this one but I would only suggest this to gore lovers.

Kind of dull for what it wants to be
24 February 2023
A soldier(last name Ransom) that is part of an elite squad gets screwed over by a commanding officer, mid mission, resulting in him being left for dead. Saved by a local village we find they are dealing with Russian(the ultimate enemy) backed Vietkong. Ransom then tries to save the village with the help of the military, who at the command of the captain continue to screw over Ransom and the villagers. Ransom ultimately settles for just going after the Russians on his own. Then the movie ends after what feels like the director forgetting to tie up loose ends.

There really isn't much to this movie. Paper thin plot. Action scenes involve Ransom standing in the open firing away while Vietkong jump and twist to show that they got shot(this movie could not afford any blood squigs.) There is some decent explosions and occasional good stunt work. Ransom constantly yelling things over and over(JAKOTA!!!!!!) will probably get a laugh out of most. There are also a few awesome deaths with fun practical effects but they are few and far between.

In the end it's a mostly boring action movie where half of it is shot of Ransom shooting followed by random Vietkong pretending to be shot. Makes for fine background noise but not much more.

Hillarious low budget Zombie film with no plot whatsoever.
15 February 2023
I love me some Giallo movies. This one isn't really a stand out in any capacity. To me Giallo movies typically have absurd plots, good effects and are well shot/lit. This one only gets the well shot part down properly.

The plot: For some reason people in Spirit Halloween masks (and a few in makeup) decide to murder a bunch of people staying in a mansion. Then the movie ends. Also in the middle of all this is a minor side plot of a teenager(played by a 30 year old man) trying to seduce his mother. That out of left field insanity is probably the most enjoyable part of the film. Besides that there is literally no plot and nothing gets explained.

Outside that you have minimal gore, mostly comprised of people being tackled followed by shots of zombies putting fresh meat cuts up against their masks since they can't open their mouths exception being the people with their Spirit Halloween makeup that can actually tear at it with their teeth. Maybe this was cutting edge for it's time but it came after Dawn of the Dead so I don't see how it could be. Many Fulci movies before this did it better too.

The characters are dumb often stopping for minutes in horror gawking at the mask wearing hobo clothed zombies while saying things like:"It's horrible!" or "Oh my god it's some sort of abomination." The Zombies on the other hand are smart, using all kinds of items and tricks to kill the characters.

If you are looking to laugh at horrible dialogue, poor special effects and an insane mother>son plot I think it is worth your time but this isn't quite good enough to reach the elite tier of bad Giallo movies.

Dull unimaginative cash in.
14 February 2023
This film reeks of some low budget movie producers trying to cash in on the Halloween/Friday The 13th craze of the time without wanting to make the effort of actually writing a movie. This movie could have literally been 95% adlibbed and no one would know the difference.

The plot is paper thing. 6 campers go into the woods and they (mostly)all get killed by an unseen(until the end) killer. There isn't much character building on either the character ends nor the killer end so you end up with a mostly dull movie.

During the 80 minute running time you are subjected to many scenes of characters walking around the woods, stock footage of animals doing animal things and stock footage of general nature in an effort to pad the already short run time.

The ending is pretty great with a hilarious reveal of the killer, a goofy fight and a ending "twist" that I enjoyed.

The effects are alright and some of the kills are really good, but it doesn't save this 45 minute script.

Save yourself the time and watch the kills and ending 5 minutes on a streaming site. You can fill in the blanks of the movie and have a better plot than what this has to offer.

Argento brought down to earth
10 February 2023
For myself Dario Argentos films are a mixture of 3 things. Laughable plot, great art direction/camera work and fun gore. This movie really only does one of those things to the standard that I expect from Argento.

Asia Argento plays our main character Sarah who is an apprentice museum curator. The museum gets a creepy urn that when opened unleashes ancient witch the 3rd mother which in turn releases growing madness into the streets. Now Sarah must stop it.

From there it's pretty basic but coherent story. Sarah goes to a place, person gets information to get her to the next place, Sarah leaves, person that gave information gets slaughtered. Repeat until the "blink and you will miss it" ending. I can't stress enough how thrown together and lazy the ending felt.

Otherwise the story is very straightforward with nods to the previous entries in the Trilogy(Suspiria and Inferno being the first 2.) The way it is shot feels like a 1990's USA horror movie and not what I am used to from an Argento flick. There are some gorgeous sets and scenery. The gore is top notch with some fantastic effects. The acting isn't particularly great from Asia but there isn't too much laugh out loud badness to be found in the movie anywhere.

This isn't anything super special but if you are deep into the horror genre like I am the falls into the worth watching category.

Crime Killer (1987)

Very competent B grade cop movie
10 February 2023
I typically try to watch vanity project movies because they tend to be trainwrecks that are filled with a mixture of all the ingredients that make for a good bad movie. This George Pan-Andreas(Zeus) vanity project resulted in a fine if not unremarkable movie.

Zeus is the best cop the force has but is forced to retire due to him having to take out some bad cops. Luckily for Zeus there is a plot to murder the president of the United States and the government has no one better to handle the situation other than this amazing local detective.

The movie has a few laughs from bad dialogue, illogical storytelling or editing but is mostly well shot, acted and directed. George Pan-Andreas, despite Engilsh not being his first language, does great with his lines and doesn't sound far out of place. The action scenes are sometimes decent but mostly boring since Zeus can only punch or shoot people.

The movie ends setting up a sequel that never seems to happen but it looks as if he was able to carve out a living in the acting/teaching realm.

I can't really recommend this one because it is not good enough to stand out in the ultimate cop/action genre but it isn't bad enough to be enjoyable.

Middle of the road vanity project.
9 February 2023
I'm not exactly the writer/director/producer of this vanity project was going for, but it only makes for a mildly entertaining movie.

He plays the ultimate badboy. He charms the ladies, he can fight, he can rap.......like many in this genre he can do it all.

Our main character immediately beds 2 women but meets the ultimate woman, one who resists his charms for about 48 hours. There is a background story of a violent ex that is willing to get violent to get her back. You would think that is the main plot, but they don't revisit it until the very last moments of the film. In the meantime, our hero gets the ultimate woman pregnant and proposes to her so now he has to get a job(even though he owns a top notch Corvette.) His new boss is a lady who wants a piece of our ultimate hero. This makes for drama.

Throughout the entire film all the main characters talk in rhyme/"rap" to eachother. Funny for 5 minutes of this 90 minute film. Also gangs of people are regularly trying to assault our hero usually for next to no reason, including buying ice cream.

The production is low budget as you would expect, poor camera work, lighting and acting are in abundance. The stunt work is mostly guys circling the hero, stepping up to him and getting dispatched of in one hit. I will admit the hero looks good, but he is one and done with his fights as opposed to the back and fourth you might find elsewhere.

This vanity project has some good-bad film qualities but really isn't a must watch. The baby mamma drama is the meat of the movie and counterbalances the rest of the nonsense plot, bad characters and illogical fight scenes.

Unremarkable but pretty great for it's time
2 February 2023
By 1986 the slasher craze was fast losing steam but this particular one did a pretty good job at making it's mark compared to similar attempts that were made.

The movie itself seems to be somewhat self aware and at first felt like a Troma production but settles down and becomes quite a bit more standard. The setup, main characters and story flow are pretty much what you would expect but most importantly it has some pretty cool, memorable, kills and effects along the way.

The movie does have a very puzzling ending that almost feels like test screenings didn't do well so they shot a whole new ending.

The movie also has this weird quirk of being shot in the UK with many of the cast members doing awkward American accents that they sometimes dip in and out of. Makes for some smiles during the movie.

If you are a fan of 80's slashers I would say this is a must see. It's more competent than 99% of the off brand attempts that decade.

A Tim and Eric joke stretched way too long.
31 January 2023
I am a TIm and Eric fan and this movie might land if you are one too. T&E typically make 3 kinds of comedy, one of those being Z list actors doing/saying awkward stuff. This is my least favorite kind of T&E sketch. And for this movie it's the same few jokes done over and over for 93 minutes.

You have an awkward duo that dresses strange, bad actors with little grasp of the English language saying weird dialogue, strange scenes of food/eating, awkward nudity, repeating of a strange phrase over and over, awkward dancing. If you are a T&E fan you have seen it all before done better.

The thin plot is basically a love story somewhat similar to Tim And Erics BIllion Dollar movie's love plot. Nothing really happens, nothing gets resolved. It's all just a canvas to have the 3 main characters(and a few extras) to run the limited Tim and Eric style jokes into the ground.

There is some laughs to be had but the movie rides them so long that it just becomes boring.

Charming if not a little bland.
31 January 2023
I'm not sure where or why people really compare this to Evil Dead, that is a comparison that raises expectations way too high in my opinion. It's a short little movie that feels like a group college aged horror enthusiasts put together in a weekend.

2 younger people end up trapped in a Japanese(aka really small) house where a demon tries to kill them. They fight back resulting in several "It's dead, it's all over" moments only for the exact same demon to return for them to fight.

The effects and gore are mostly pretty low quality. As is the filming and shot quality. Lots of super close ups since every room was 6 foot by 8 foot at largest. You can blatantly tell it was put together by a bunch of horror fans wanting to have a bit of fun making the whole thing a bit charming though all around unremarkable.

I don't exactly recommend this one but at least it is short which makes for a decent draw on a bad movie night where you will likely talk over it.

Bloody Moon (1981)
5/10
Italian Giallo adjacent film that isn't bad for it's time.
31 January 2023
I love my Italian Giallo films for them being violent, devoid of coherent plot, well shot and poorly dubbed. "Bloody Moon" as my version was hits all those marks pretty well.

A guy gets let out of an insane asylum for murdering a woman 5 years after the act, to be put in the care of his sister who lives(maybe works) on a all girls school on an island. At the same time a new girl is joining the school is feeling stalked and is seeing fellow classmates get killed.

This makes for hilarious dialogue during the meat of the movie as her concerns are met with;"Angela, you are acting hysterical, you need to get to bed" after describing, in graphic detail the murder of a fellow classmate. And when classmates go missing, after being told by her that they were killed, it's: "Ah she just probably ran off with some boy." These fools would probably be in a burning building and say: "That is just because the heater is on, you are imagining things."

This all leads to a big reveal of a convoluted plot explaining what is really happening and the main character having nothing to do with actually solving the mystery. This doesn't explain a lot of the nonsense in the middle of the film but it is part of the fun. The ending feels like they desperately wanted to end the film hoping no one would notice the insane gaps of logic that got us to that point.

The movie makes for lots of laughs and decent gore. That is what I came for, that is what I got but it did not overachieve.

Somehow Fulcis most competent film.
31 January 2023
Italian Giallo films are my comfort food. Lots of (various quality) gore, nonsensical plots, dumb characters, bad dialogue and the otherwise strange looking English dubbing of actors that are attempting to speak English. Fulci is one of the greats when it comes to this.

Knowing that this movie really didn't have a script it is somehow the Fulci movie that makes the most sense.

Fulci plays a fictionalized version of himself and is having extreme visions of really murdering or may be imagining murdering a lot of people. Possibly brough upon by years of directing horror films, possibly by something more sinister. Tons of gore of varying quality including some best in class.

Watching the old man murder people as they cower in terror is hilarious, since most all could either run or overpower such a person. There is no shortage of laugh out loud scenes in this one including Fulci rabidly attacking paint cans with an axe.

The plot is otherwise quite a bit bare bones as the bodies pile up. This all leads to an ending that mostly gets resolved off screen in classic Fulci nonsense fashion.

If you like the other Fulci hits you will like this one no doubt.

Intriguing then predictable ad infinium
24 January 2023
This is a decent entry into the mystery genre that would not be out of place as an episode of The Outer Limits.

It starts off with a pretty fun premise, then seems to turn into what seems to be a different genre, then finally settles into the bigger plot, which is fairly predictable. From there there is a little more intrigue then more predictability followed by a nonsense ending.

The discussion goes onto this day as to what exactly happens in the film, the best so far involves throwing out all logic or attachment to reality. The (somewhat) attachment to a reality based story is part of what makes the story so good, so explaining the ending with complete nonsense leaves a sour taste at the end.

It's well produced all around but in the end it feels like the writers wrote themselves into a corner. It doesn't make for a bad ride but once you hit the end you might regret a lot of it if you look for answers as to what just happened.

A bad, bad movie
24 January 2023
I don't mind a certain type of bad movie but this one commits the ultimate sin of being plain boring. This low budget film was sold to me as "horror" on Tubi, is more of a "why was this made?" oddity than anything.

Why exactly was this made? It's not engaging, it doesn't have a good story nor character development. It isn't really exciting or funny or anything. It's the closest thing to watching nothing while watching something.

2 characters go through several bland(4 walls of brick, 4 walls of plain drywall) rooms and "solve riddles" and avoid "traps" leading to a completely nonsensical ending.

You would think this might be a vanity project for star Lazar Rockwood, but it is not. He is just a ugly, poor actor with a minimal grasp on the english language. I don't know how or why he got this role. His co-star is fine I guess but neither of them were given any worthwhile dialogue anyways.

This kind of has the feel of a lost "Tales From the Darkside" episode but 3 times the length.

Other than some bad acting and the occasional unintentional funny line this has nothing going for it so save your time.

Blood Harvest (1987)
3/10
A product of a decade before it's time
12 January 2023
This 1987 release kind of reminds me of a horror film that would be an alright release from 1970.

The movie is mostly boring with not a lot of "slasher" action going on since the movie really doesn't have more than a handful of locations, characters and clearly lacks a good effects team(I can see the blood pumping line in the shot.) The deaths are tame, but probably wouldn't be for a 1970 movie.

The amount of who done it characters is so small that there isn't much wiggle room to guess who it is, and you regularly see the killer wearing a stocking over their head which they are pretty identifiable.

The killers motive and ending doesn't much sense at all, making the viewer confused on why certain events happened earlier in the film.

The production is fine. The acting is ok, with a few characters getting a bit too hammy for my tastes. Tiny Tim(who I barely have any knowledge of) makes up for a lot of that hammy-ness.

I write reviews and leave ratings so I can remember what I have watched. I will forget pretty much everything about this movie in a few months and I would guess that is how others will feel to about this otherwise unremarkable film.

Coherence (2013)

Fun Sci Fi idea that has a lot of shortcomings
12 January 2023
This was recommended to me by a horror movie forum and it's not horror but much closer to a Twilight Zone episode. It's very much a "what is going on here" movie

It has an overall fun concept that I have not seen before but is full of flaws that make it less enjoyable than need be.

First off the characters often do lots of puzzling things. Things that I guess one might do in that situation but had me screaming(in my head) for them to do something completely different. It takes me out of the film throughout.

Second issue is that the topic can be a bit obtuse, so the characters are constantly giving out exposition to tell you what is going on. The (and pretty much all)movie would be better served to have natural and environmental exposition rather than the characters telling you exactly what is going on.

Last is the otherwise nonsense ending. I actually appreciate what they tried to do but the execution was awful and resulted in a mess.

The movie is basically all shot in one house and otherwise feels cheap. While the acting is fine you can tell it was mostly improv which often resulted in a lot of unnecessary dialogue. Some of the camera work, specifically the camera cuts, resembled that of a found footage film which I felt didn't work. But it's mostly well acted and competently done.

This could have used good amount more polish to get it to greatness but it's a fun ride if you are up for a Sci Fi mystery.

Titane (2021)
4/10
Don't ask questions just enjoy the sights and sounds....
6 January 2023
Titane is a movie that makes no sense whatsoever. No effort is made to explain anything, some things happen then the movie ends(due to something that is kind of explained) while abandoning other things you wished were answered.

The beginning of the movie kind of starts building up something, justifies the second act and then the second and third act mostly ignore the first act with an otherwise middling drama focused plot.

I watched this because it is supposed to be horror, and it's occasionally body horror but more drama than anything.

The movie is beautifully shot, has great lighting and a fantastic score. For me that is the main event of the film and I can often appreciate a film on that being the backbone of it.

4 Stars because the movie is pretty boring in the latter 2 acts which make up 80% or so percent of the movie. I think it might land better with the artistic crowd but I don't know if I would recommend this to anyone. If you do watch it fire up your favorite search engines because you will be confused by the time the film ends.

Prey (I) (2022)
5/10
Not good but better than most Predator films.
6 January 2023
Prey is not really a good film, but it is the third best Predator film behind Predator 1&2.

The story is that a younger woman Native American that is shown to be a hair shy of being absolutely amazing fails short of amazing on her first hunt for her tribe. Then the Predator shows up kills a few tribe people and some French trappers. Then the amazing girl proves herself to be amazing her people by beating the Predator.

The plot was paper thin. The action/gore/horror was unremarkable which is a huge miss. A lot of the CGI looked cheap. The Predator once again has to act like a total buffoon to make the movie work in any capacity.

With that said it's shot well and the main actress(Amber Midthunder) and actor(Dakota Beavers) were great.

I'm thinking people went in with such low expectations on this one that anything that wasn't awful would be well received. For me this movie has no redeemable qualities that make me want to recommend it. It isn't good or bad, just an unremarkable entry in the Predator universe, which puts it ahead of a lot of others from the franchise.

Violent Night (2022)
5/10
Doesn't know what audience it wants.
6 January 2023
This movie is part Christmas movie, part goofy comedy and part John Wick. I didn't know there was a market for such things.

At all times it seems to be switching between the three things from scene to scene, so the laughs get broken by the other two the feel good Christmas feelings get broken by the other two and the adrenaline rush that the John Wick style action has gets broken by the other two.

All three aspects are done competently. But I am not one who enjoys eating my appetizer, main course and dessert all at the same time.

Guy who plays Santa is great and so are the other actors, stuntmen, etc. It's well shot but kind of has the feel a made for TV movie more than a feature film.

In a way it's cool to see something like this get funded and filmed but I would rather watch 3 films in the different genres stay in their lane.

Aquaslash (2019)
2/10
A film about nothing.......and Aquaslash.
6 January 2023
I needed something short to watch the other night and remember the Red Letter Media folks telling me not to watch this.

I suppose I should have listened.

The short of the film is about "high school aged" people that have their school graduation party at a waterpark. Then some "character building" goes on(most of which goes nowhere or is unresolved.) Then there is a 3person multi team waterslide race. One of the 3 slides has the Aquaslash(giant sharpened blades in the middle of the slide) installed and for various reasons different characters end up going down the slide to their deaths. Then the movie ends with a very questionable reason for why it happened.

A non-spoiler reason of why it happened is some guy had a cool death idea(Aquaslash) then he convinced some insane people to fund this. Then that person had to write something resembling a feature film length movie for the several minutes of Aquaslash.

Gets 2 stars because some of the gore is good, but it's literally the 10-20 minutes of the movie. So if you want to get a quick gore fix watch the slide scene or better a supercut on a streaming video platform. Better yet just imagine the concept and spend your time doing anything else.

Barbarian (2022)

Tonal mess that ruins itself
6 January 2023
As the first act came to an end of this three, very distinct act movie, I thought I was watching a horror masterpiece. Then the rest of the movie happened.

The first act is what I consider a clinic in building unease and tension. Everything on the surface being normal but gives you the feeling that everything is wrong all at the same time.

The second act is a comedy character building segment.

The third act is just self aware goofy schlock, not as bad as a Troma film but somewhat adjacent.

As a result of this mess of tones, some might see it as "CrAzy TWisSTs" but for me the craziness ruined the good will the first act gained. Either way you look at it the drastic changes in tone give me "A Cabin In The Woods" feel where once you watch it, it is spoiled for good.

The movie only really has 3 characters and they all end up extremely dumb. There is a lot of moments that just don't make any sense whatsoever. The movie is pretty minimal on gore but has good effects. It's shot and acted well.

In the end this feels like the writer had 3 different ideas and shoehorned them together to make a movie length feature. I'd say it's worth watching for the horror fan, but I won't make the effort to watch this ever again.
