Obsessed (2009)

Boringly Predictable--wait for regular cable programming
26 April 2009
A friend had free movie passes to see this movie--and on my birthday, of all days.

That is two hours of my life that I will never get back.

The movie is a remix of Fatal Attraction, but the plot is nowhere near as edgy and suspenseful. As for the acting...I never expected much of Beyonce in the first place (because she can't act, nor can she speak very well), but I was so disappointed in Idris Elba's performance. A friend remarked that he was probably underacting in order not to overshadow Beyonce, and she was probably right. Still, his character was a caricature of a pseudo-thug from New York who moved up the corporate ranks and added a veneer of sophistication over that thug image. Stringer Bell, we hardly knew ye.

Even Ali Larter didn't come off as psychotic as she could have...perhaps because underneath her lines was the feeling that she was thinking, "What in the world is THIS crap?" Beyonce was a relative nonentity (albeit a well-dressed one), but I'm sure that she and her father bankrolled this movie in further misguided efforts to try and prove that she is a Serious Actress (not to mention a vehicle for further promotion of the House of Dead Wrong--excuse me, the House of Dereon). Too bad it didn't work. However, Beyonce fans and stans will faithfully flock to theaters and will loudly proclaim that she is the best actress since Madea, and should win an Oscar for her performance since she was "robbed" in Dreamgirls. I will give her this: she didn't completely suck as an actress in this movie, but she didn't really stretch herself as an actress either--but then again, she never has. At least she didn't play a singer of some sort in this one, so there is some progress being made.

My disbelief was hardly suspended in this movie. There were so many ways that the movie could have been beefed up to carry viewers on an emotional roller coaster ride, but the writers and directors chose to take the safe route. I'd strongly suggest that people wait for the movie to show up on regular cable programming, and not pay-per-view or view-on-demand.

Leverage (2008–2012)

Waiting for the excitement...
14 December 2008
I have been eagerly anticipating the premiere of Leverage for the past month and a half....TNT did a great job of building the hype.

Then Dec. 7 came...and I was l left a bit underwhelmed.

I watched the repeat of the premiere and the new show on the 9th. Still a bit underwhelmed. And I watched the repeats of BOTH shows again over the weekend. Still underwhelmed.

I love the characters, but it's the story lines that are not grabbing me. Maybe I'm waiting for more of the backstories to unfold; maybe I'm waiting for tighter plots. But right now, Leverage is going to have to step up its game to keep me engaged for the next 11 or so episodes.

Who knows...the same thing happened to me when In Plain Sight (on USA) debuted. I wasn't digging the first few shows, stopped watching, tuned in toward the end of the season, and got hooked. Leverage may require the same treatment from me.

Ray (I) (2004)

Good portrayal of a legend
31 October 2004
I saw Ray on Saturday, 10/30/04. It's the best $6.50 I've spent since seeing Fahrenheit 9/11 and Mystic River! Jamie Foxx was excellent as the music icon. The voice, the mannerisms...he was Ray Charles! This is a role for which Foxx truly deserves an Oscar for Best Actor. Granted, there were some secondary story lines that were left hanging (like Ray's firing of his longtime manager and friend Jeff, and the subsequent hiring of the character played by Harry Lennix; and Ray's true feelings for Marjorie, his lover and backup singer). Since this is indeed a movie, folks must take into account that there was probably some skewing of facts for the sake of artistic license and better audience engagement. I'm going to the library to try and find a biography of Ray Charles, so I can see what was left out of the movie. Still, this is a very good film that will move you, and I learned a lot about Ray Charles other than him singing "You got the right one, baby." LOL Mr. Ray Charles Robinson would have been proud, God rest him. I can't wait for the official DVD to come out...this will definitely become a part of my personal movie collection.

All About You (2001)

Makes you believe in love again
30 August 2004
I found this at a used DVD store and decided to give it a whirl (hey, I could always sell it on Ebay if I didn't like it!) This was a surprisingly pleasant highlight of my weekend!

The script was good, the acting was solid (despite the bitter comments of the previous reviewer; not Oscar-worthy, but still solid), and the soundtrack was great! There were some acting veterans that nicely rounded out the cast, such as Vanessa Bell Calloway, Lou Myers and the incomparable Debbie Allen. This movie is very relevant to today's dating scene. I would even pay full price for this movie, which is a minor miracle. Rent it and see for yourself (and don't forget to watch the deleted scenes! They provide additional context). This is what what more black films (and Hollywood) should strive to emulate, and it gives another layer of credence to independent film-making.

not knocked out at all
20 October 2002
After hearing/reading the good, the bad, and the ugly about this film, I decided to see it for myself. I should have waited for video, but at least I saw a matinee.

The movie wasn't really exciting. I got the sense that a lot of good stuff was left on the cutting room floor. Barry Pepper's character got on my nerves for the most part, and some of his actions seemed a bit unrealistic. I would have liked to have understood more of Taylor's (Vin Diesel)lines, but he seemed to be mumbling quite a bit (when he wasn't smoking). His performance didn't have the impact that I anticipated...nothing like his show-stealing act in Pitch Black. I would have also liked to have seen more development into some of the asides, such as the stigma attached to Taylor's mom being Jewish (which, apparently, was a no-no in the Mob world. But why was it a no-no? Enquiring minds would have wanted to know). Dennis Hopper...why? John Malkovich was actually one of the highlights of the movie with his wanna-be Italian Mafioso accent. I also liked the guy that played Marbles; his transformation toward the end of the film was pretty good. The potheads, had they had a bigger part, probably would have made things more interesting.

Tom Noonan did an excellent job as the sheriff. I enjoyed his performance.

The ending was full of adrenaline, but seemed rushed. Wait for it to come to Blockbuster, or maybe HBO.
