Chak De! India (2007)
Indian underdog sports film will make American girls cheer.
Seven years after field hockey star Kabir Kahn (Bollywood heartthrob staple Shah Rukh Khan) is deemed a traitor for his big loss against Pakistan he's given another chance to show his true colors. He's asked to coach the India women's national field hockey team. He has three months to mold players from states all around India into a team ready for the world cup in Australia -- and he's got his work cut out for him. The girls are divided by prejudice and haughtiness and lack any kind of camaraderie. And after Kahn works hard to bring the girls together, the team's funding is cut off. The sexist head of the field hockey club is giving the money to the men's team instead. In a last-ditch effort to get the girls to Australia, Coach Kahn has them play against the men's team to decide their fate.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Fitzgerald classic gets a decadent, gorgeous, tricky update.
Set in New York in the lavish Roaring Twenties, this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic THE GREAT GATSBY stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, a wealthy, mysterious, self-made man who moves into a Long Island mansion and makes a name for himself by throwing lavish, bacchanalian parties -- all for the singular purpose of winning back the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Daisy's husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton), is oblivious (at first) to it all because he's so preoccupied with his own dalliances. Witness to it all is Gatsby's neighbor, Daisy's cousin, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who plays a part in bringing them together and witnesses a series of events that ultimately reveals the characters' tragic flaws.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
Spy franchise returns for more action-packed thrills.
In MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCAL, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is locked in a Russian prison, but not for long. His new team (Paula Patton and Simon Pegg) assists him as he executes a flawless escape that lands him on the other side of the wall and smack into his next mission: to capture Cobalt, a terrorist determined to cause global havoc. The villain has found a way to make it look as if Hunt and his crew, which now also includes a mysteriously skillful analyst (Jeremy Renner), are rogues, leaving the U. S. government with little recourse but to put them on "ghost protocol" -- untethered and unassisted as they attempt to put a stop to Cobalt and his nefarious plans.
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Trilogy finale has same heavy violence, weaker script.
THE MATRIX RELOADED is the third installment of the Matrix trilogy and focuses on two storylines. First, Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) has to pilot a ship through some very tricky situations while guys in huge robot things fight off zillions of cool flying octopus-like machines. Meanwhile, Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), on another ship, are heading straight for a city occupied by the machines for a Dorothy-and-the-wizard-in-Emerald City-style confrontation. There's a brief encounter with the Frenchman and Persephone (Monica Belluci) in a nightclub that appears to be occupied with writhing bondage-and-discipline freaks. Neo visits the Oracle (now played by Mary Alice, replacing the late Gloria Foster) in her cozy kitchen and has a strange conversation about love and karma in an antiseptic train station.
Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Lots of guns, gore in violent remake of classic cop show.
Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin), a former Navy SEAL, returns home to Hawaii to bring down the terrorist who killed his father in HAWAII FIVE-0. When he arrives, the governor (Jean Smart) offered him a job: heading up an elite new crime-fighting unit designed to bring down the worst offenders in the islands. "Your rules," she promised him, "my backing, no red tape." In other words, McGarrett had free rein to hunt down the bad guys with no regard for standard cop procedure. He could shoot first and ask questions later. But McGarrett's carte blanche was cut short when the governor was murdered, and the new governor had much less patience with his freewheeling ways. Now McGarrett acts more like a traditional cop, chasing down clues in each week's case with the help of his team: Danny "Danno" Williams (Scott Caan), a New Jersey expatriate who's no fan of the beach; Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim), who was caught up in a corruption scandal and forced out of the Honolulu Police Department; and Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park), Chin Ho's cousin, the least experienced team member who's eager to make a name for herself. Other recurring characters include Dr. Max Bergman (Masi Oka), the chief medical examiner who performs autopsies under the direction of the Five-0 team, Lieutenant Catherine Rollins (Michelle Borth), Steve McGarrett's sometimes-girlfriend and Navy intelligence officer, and Kamekona (Taylor Wily), a shave ice truck owner and informant who's chummy with McGarrett.
The Bachelorette (2003)
Televised search for love has an iffy premise.
Building on the success of long-running reality dating show The Bachelor, this spin-off gives a jilted bachelorette who didn't get the proposal she was looking for on The Bachelor a second chance to find true love among her own pool of 25 single men. In an elimination-style series of one-on-one "dates" and group challenges, she gradually whittles her prospective suitors down to just one lucky guy, who's presumably the man she's going to marry.
Se, jie (2007)
Explicit, NC-17 WWII drama.
Ang Lee's lush World War II melodrama LUST, CAUTION takes place over several years and is set in Japanese-occupied Shanghai (with brief respites in still-British Hong Kong). At its center is an espionage plot, but that's mostly a scaffolding for the remarkable, intricate relationship between Mr. Yee (Tony Leung) -- a Japanese collaborator and the brutal head of Shanghai's secret police -- and Wang (Tang Wei), a young Chinese patriot posing as a wealthy businessman's wife in order to set up Yee's assassination. Her group is so dedicated to this cause that even when their scheme is thwarted because Yee and his wife (Joan Chen) leave Shanghai, they pick it up again three years later. This dedication is, the movie proposes, partly a function of self-delusion. Not only do Wang's compatriots believe in the absolute good of their self-appointed mission, but they also believe in the absolute evil of their prey. As Wang crosses emotional and moral borders during her performance, she comes to see the problems with making such black-and-white distinctions. It's not that Yee can be forgiven for his violence -- his men arrest and execute resistance workers daily -- but that her own work is fraught with ethical grey areas. Her deceptions make her feel like a prostitute, a role that her mentor, Kuang (Wang Lee-Hom), can't quite understand. He does, however, come to feel a mix of guilt and jealousy as he begins to fall in love with her -- though he never tells her (which is also form of deception, born of his dedication to the cause).

Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
Superb tale of a girl's struggle for her dreams.
In BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, Jess (Parminder K. Nagra) is the obedient daughter of her tradition-minded parents who have mapped her life's flight path from law degree to Indian husband to perfecting her ability to cook aloo gobi. They have also allowed her to develop her natural soccer playing talents by turning a blind eye to her practices in the park with her best friend, Tony (Ameet Chana). When Jess' older sister, Pinky (Archie Panjabi), prepares to get married, their parents decide that it is time for Jess to settle down. Just as they are telling Jess to curb her sports pursuits, she is offered the opportunity to take her playing to the next level, where she meets fellow player Juliette (Keira Knightley) and her good-looking Irish coach, Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).

Veer falls for Zaara the moment he rescues her from a bus crash and eventually compels her to visit his family's village for the festival of Lodi. After a night of dancing and celebration, Veer's uncle urges him to woo her before she hops on a train home. But Veer loses his nerve when she's met at the station by her fiance. Zaara is determined to do her duty to her family and forge a political alliance with her marriage, but can't get Veer out of her head as she prepares for the wedding. Seeing her torment, Zaara's maid Shabbo (Divya Dutta) calls Veer and urges him to cross into Pakistan. Despite what it may cost him, he doesn't hesitate.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
More gore, gross-outs than the other Indy blockbusters.
Set before Indiana Jones tangled with the Nazis over the lost ark, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM finds the archaeologist-adventurer on a mission to recover another priceless artifact and rescue enslaved children. After a narrow escape from Chinese gangsters, Indy (Harrison Ford), nightclub singer Willie (Kate Capshaw), and precocious 12-year-old Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) are asked by humble villagers to take on the Thuggees, an evil cult that practices human sacrifice. Indy and his friends face trained assassins, mind control potions, enormous bugs, and a wild ride in a mining cart as they try to retrieve the village's sacred stone -- and their kidnapped children -- from evil Mola Ram and his gang of Thuggees.
The Last Legion (2007)
Mr. Darcy trades Austen for Excalibur. Only OK.
"The legend begins beneath these dark hills." That would be the oft-told legend of Excalibur. After his parents are killed, 12-year-old Emperor Romulus Augustus is imprisoned on the island of Capri, along with his former teacher, Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley). Aurelius (Colin Firth), Romulus' new teacher, Batiatus (Nonso Anozie), Demetrius (Rupert Friend), and Mira (Aishwarya Rai) help them escape, and they journey to Britain to find the 9th legion.

The Pink Panther 2 (2009)
Silly sequel elicits more eyerolling than laughs.

Joining him are investigators from Italy (Andy Garcia), England (Alfred Molina), and Japan (Yuki Matsuzaki), as well as an expert on the Tornado's past crimes (played by Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai). As they track down the Tornado, the other detectives grow tired of Clouseau's bumbling, embarrassing ways -- while the inspector and his faithful assistant Nicole (Emily Mortimer) try to not to act on their obvious mutual attraction.

Planes (2013)
Airborne adventure is OK for a few laughs; some stereotypes.
PLANES, like Cars, takes place in a world in which all the inhabitants are vehicles. Ambitious young Nebraskan crop duster Dusty Crophopper (voiced by Dane Cook) dreams of flying in an annual international air race called Wings Around the World. To hone his skills, he asks legendary (and reclusive) former WWII fighter plane Skipper (Stacy Keach) to train him for the race and mechanic pal Dottie (Teri Hatcher) to get him ready for maximum speed. But former three-time racing champion Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith) has no intention of letting some "farm boy" underdog beat him, so he enlists other planes in the competition to sabotage Dusty's chances. Meanwhile, Dusty befriends a Mexican plane called El Chupacabra (Carlos Alazraqui), who looks out for him during the race.
Quantico (2015)
Solid female-led FBI drama addresses stereotypes, terrorism.
QUANTICO is a dramatic series about new recruits at the FBI Quantico Base in Virginia and their potential connections to one of the largest terrorist acts on American soil since 9/11. It stars Priyanka Chopra as Alex Parrish, a tenacious top recruit, who unexpectedly finds herself a prime suspect after New York's Grand Central Station is bombed nine months after she joins the agency. But as the story unfolds, we go back in time and watch Parrish, along with fellow recruits like Ryan Booth (Jake McLaughlin), Shelby Wyatt (Johanna Braddy), Simon Asher (Tate Ellington), Nimah Amin (Yasmine Al Massri), and the obnoxious Caleb Haas (Graham Rogers) going through training -- and attempting to hide their personal and professional secrets in the process. In the middle of it all is Special Agent Liam O'Connor (Josh Hopkins), and Quantico's first female director, Miranda Shaw (Aunjanue Ellis). As Parrish tries to prove her innocence, important details from the past are revealed, distrust increases, and the threats to U. S. national security grow larger.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Promising sequel devolves into mindless action movie.
In THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS, Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), now famous for having developed a successful trilogy of games called The Matrix, is working as a video game designer in San Francisco. He sees a therapist (Neil Patrick Harris) and takes medication to control his strange "visions" and keep himself grounded in reality. In a cafe, he spots Tiffany (Carrie-Anne Moss), who somehow looks familiar. Meawhile, a scrappy young freedom fighter named Bugs (Jessica Henwick) infiltrates an experimental computer simulation designed by Anderson and discovers an alternate version of Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Together they find the clues they need to track Neo down and set things right. But once he's awakened and in the "real" world again, Neo longs to find Trinity. So the heroes launch an impossible rescue mission that could doom all humans.
The Girl Next Door (2004)
Stunningly bad teen sex comedy.
In THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, good boy Matthew (Emile Hirsch) is just about to get everything he's been working for. He's on the verge of getting a scholarship to Georgetown and he's raised $25,000 to bring a brilliant student to America to study. Then one night he sees a gorgeous girl (Elisha Cuthbert) in the house next door, getting undressed. She sees him peeping and comes over -- she is house-sitting. They go for a ride and she asks him when the last time was that he did something crazy. The next thing he knows, he's standing naked in the street as she drives away. And soon after that, he and Danielle are up to mischief. All is dewy young love in soft focus until he finds out that she's a porn star. He is disappointed in her. She is disappointed in him because he is disappointed in her. Danielle goes back to her porn producer. Matthew goes after her. Kelly goes after him. The $25,000 disappears. Snobbish bullies must be shown up. And there is still that speech he has to give to win that scholarship.
Bride & Prejudice (2004)
Fluffy Bollywood-style musical romance.
By director Gurinder Chadha, responsible for the great Bend it Like Beckham, BRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a pretty faithful retelling of Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice". Lalita (Aishwarya Rai) is the second oldest daughter of a well-to-do Indian family, celebrating the arranged engagement of their oldest to the wealthy and handsome Balraj Bingley (Naveen Andrews), an Indian living in Britain. He's come to meet his future wife, and he's brought his aristocratic sister Kiran (Indira Varma) and American buddy William Darcy (Martin Henderson). It's Darcy's first time in India, and he's having trouble adjusting. So when a huge musical number breaks out, he just doesn't feel comfortable jumping into the swirling throng and dancing. To Lalita, he comes off as aloof, and she dismisses him as a boorish American, more interested in making money than in the beautiful culture around him. As in Austin's novel, Lalita and Darcy repeatedly grow closer and draw apart.
