The Hunt (2020)
Another spin on "The most Dangerous Game" theme
The tale never gets old when the suspense is good and the backstory fresh and relevant. The rich kidnapping not-so-random people and hunting them down to die. One always tries to turn the tables and hunt the hunters, despite the odds agaisnt them. If you've watched Kill Bill too many times, give The Hunt a try. Some decent fight scenes. Some blood & gore but not gratuitously gory. No sex scenes (I hate those lol, I choose violence. So it's a plus for me, also.kid-friendly depending on how much you censor violence. I personally wld have been allowed to watch this at a pretty young age and would allow the same).
LOVE the ending scene. Ends on a high note. Pulls the parable she told at the beginning all together and everything. Will def watch again when I need motivation or spirits lifted.
Fate: The Winx Saga (2021)
Fantasy show w/ viariety superpowers, plot twists & FASHION
If you're into fantasy, secret backstories of bloodlines & power plays, this seems to have a bit of it all. I really like a story that I can enjoy & appreciate the antagonist characters - or at least half of them. Lots of character development, set in a college in the magical realm where humams train to fight alongside fairies training in their powers, with fearsome enemies on the horizon.
I liked the 2nd season more than the 1st.
I skip through love scenes... There's not very many, but if i made myself watch them all the way through I'd be very annoyed by it haha. Just added that bc other reviews mentioned the love scenes as an annoyance. Yeah, they are. If you skip it, it's less annoying lol.
Aesthetics are pleasing. It's definitely a pretty show. Although if you are photosensitive like me there are a few scenes you'll need to look away from bc too much flashing. There are warnings at the beginning of episodes. They do a decent job of diversity although the main characters are still mostly caucasian & the protagonist definitely fits the generic standard of beauty, well, she is gorgeous - and that red hair!
Now, this is a great show for the fashionistas out there! We have the sort-of Harlequinn-type bad girl in sort of a preppy/punky look, she always looks stunning & means business. The the suitemates vary from literal Princess - always stylish yet conservative/ professional, to the free-spirit/punky mind fairy, the earth fairy who dresses pretty humble, hoping shell come into her own with historic garments or something (but her bestie comes in hot in the 2nd season with a girly boho style that you will ADORE). Main character & her sporty water-power roommate both keep a pretty low key casual style, typical american fare but looks good - but on special events really pull out all the stops.
The music wasnt to my lersonal taste, it's pop-y r&b, i muted it a lot. There was 1 song I shazammed & added to my "girl music" playlist haha (Waves by YONAKA) it has a good groove.
So far only 2 seasons, hoping they're filming a 3rd!
No Men Beyond This Point (2015)
Dark humor... 1st half great for female asexuals
This documentary style fictional movie was done really well in a believable sense. It has some dry hilarity. You really have to want to pay atrention. I think I would show this to a class if I taught an elective course, and ask them to write a paper on it. It starts out very interesting with premises for virgin pregnancies resulting in only - female births & it has this massive effect on society, women taking charge & basically men getting subjugated in the way men have subjugated other men and women and children since the beginning of humankind. From my POV as an asexual cis woman, this was quite hilarious and i really cackled at some of the things said, esp in the interviews with the older men... They did really well with their parts... and the manless society is sort of a utopia I'd like to experience. The way it ended with the hetero couple legally getting married and all that was lame and disappointing. I was hoping for a darker ending, the real end of males and whatever that would be like, I guess in that way - don't think me a sadist - it would have had a more interesting and in-depth story, & maybe some unforeseen problems , then maybe the collapse of humankond itself, or maybe the thriving Amazons type culture globally. & the couple getting like a life sentence instead of the right to marry, and mass executions of men or something would have interested me more. The ending was kind of a lame way to wrap up the story that could have had a more stark ending and a more emotional impact on the viewers.
Sleepy Hollow (2013)
What we wanted National Treasure to be
The first 3 seasons are gold if you're into historical fiction, supernatural powers, & artifacts. The cgi is believable and engaging & the show is interesting. It's a little gory but not too bad, & also there's no sex scenes so for me these things are a plus.
I really like how the plot ties so many things together, it ties the old lore to this new present-day rendition and the additional characters so well. I love the lineage & backstory of the 2 sister protagonists as you learn it later in the series.
The two main characters have a really solid platonic partnership/friendship which I think is so awesome and rare in cinema these days.
Also multiple very strong female leads in the whole series! Overall great cast, interesting "evils" to fight, & some decent comic relief as well.
One of the main characters gets killed off at the end of 3rd season so it's been hard for me to get through 4th season even though I really like the new characters and the turn the story is taking.
The Cave (2005)
Great if you want something dark (not bright) and somewhat scary but not horror.
This was great to put on when I had a headache. Since it mostly takes place in a cave, there's lots of water and cave and bubble imagery, & the majority of the movie is pretty dark.
I appreciated the simple plot, I could have the volume low, no need to hear every word of dialogue, you already have an idea of what's going down.
It is technically scary but like I don't watch horror movies by myself and this was okay. It reminded me of B-horror style, but done much better. If that makes sense.
.
I also really appreciated it's brush with the concept of deep caves as a gateway to hell, & all the gothic imagery at the beginning. It was entertaining enough to keep my mind off of rumination & dark enough to have on with a headache.
The Bureau of Magical Things (2018)
PG also interesting & entertaining
As an adult it is hard to find something pg that is also interesting and amusing. This show covers it! The Australian slang & accent is interesting also.
It's def a show with obvious archetypes - but then it's easy low key watching. There's the protagonist Kyra, who randomly becomes magical. Her non-magical friend Peter discovered her secret but gets to join in the magical realm... & then there's her oblivious dad & her best friend Maddie, both of whom she is constantly hiding magic from.
The magical main characters are:
Maxwell, the magic school professor who (much to my amusement) is constantly showing the students dangerous yet intriguing objects and then leaving suddenly 😹 expecting them not to be tempted.
There's the goody two shoes Lilly, who constantly is getting into little magic messes when "trying to help", and also Ruksy the most knowledgeable & by-the-book,
Imogen, the rebellious but ambitious one with sort of an emo/scene style, and her brother Darrow with a sort of hipster look & always seems to have a secret. He's the "never let them guess your next move" guy.
The premise of the show is that the students are studying to help keep magic a secret from humans. Kyra becomes magical by accident and joins this school. The first season is pretty light until the last 4 episodes or so, & second season continues in a more serious/adventurous way & introduces some new characters & a quest!
I really enjoy the conservative but very cute boho fashion of Lilly & Ruksy, & the punky ensembles replete with plaid that Imogen sports. Plenty of outfit changes for the fashion/costuming nerd. I also love that they don't show excessive skin, it's a very "appropriate" show - no big triggers! I also want to know where to get all these very long cute shirts 😹
Siempre Bruja (2019)
Strong characters, uplifting mood, great music
These main characters have a lot of personality & background. The development of the storyline is captivating. A great show about friendship & perseverance, Family ties & loyalty. Also about making hard decisions, & sometimes wrong decisions.
Caribbean witch aesthetic 100%! Also pirates!
Costuming is great, lots of cute & interesting outfits
Wish there were more seasons! Will watch again.
Not gory or explicit which is ideal for me!
Luna Nera (2020)
Witch aesthetic, forbidden romance, vengeance, & historical costuming
I found this series both entertaining & pleasing to the eye. The drama of the witches and the witch hunters, family ties, persecution & personal dramas... it's interesting to follow.
My one complaint is that the music style in most of the scores doesn't really go with the setting & they're in English and not Italian. I like the intro song bc of the style but the rest of the music I found irritating.
Atiye (2019)
Aesthetic & Mood 10/10
I would recommend this series if you like shows about archaeology and ancient mysteries/powers. This series explores the threads of reincarnation, parallel universe, time travel (sort of) - or rather, changing the outcome of events past.
Aesthetic & costuming are half of my reason to watch television. I think it seems exotic to me becauae if the middle eastern setting, but the scenery & architecture I find both intriguing & calming. The styles sported by Atiye are a sort of rustic-femme, while her adopted sister Cansu has flashy, forward, & sexy yet classy ensembles.
Cleopatra 2525 (2000)
Female leads, post-apocaltptic sci-fi
I stumbled on this gem looking for more content with Gina Torres. It's some of her earlier work, and while I haven't finished the series yet, I've been enjoying the industrial post-apocalyptic aesthetic. Definitely here for the costuming.
I gave it an 8 because it's definitely older CGI, and it has some kind-of corny plot twists, so it's definitely not a 10 for those reasons, but I like it and I think it's funny and I like what they're wearing 🤓😁
Serenity (2005)
Especially if you like humor a little on the dark side
Honestly my favorite sci-fi out there and wish it had more seasons. The crew's characters are both unique and endearing, the plot still swerving, the costuming and the humor are on point, & the series & movie easily bingeable. I'll probably continue to watch them 1-2x a year (but not in one sitting)
My favorite Episode is Jaynestown 😂😂😂
It *does* make me happy to see my favorite characters from Firefly in other sci-fi tv.
