Mystic River (2003)
let down
is there anything worse than a movie that pretends to be deep and meaningful, but that is superficial and predictable? this was a real let down, and the actors were all overacting. completely. it was defintely tim robbins' worst performance i'd ever seen. blame it on clint eastwood, i guess. i really can't comprehend how this movie got a 8,1 vote on imdb.com.
The Avengers (1998)
huh?
just caught this on tv and it was indeed incredibly dull, stupid and irritating. steed and peel as a romantic couple? come on! i got the feeling that the only excuse to actually base this movie on the old tv series was the possibiltiy to get to see uma in a catsuit. otherwise, it had none of the wit, style or glamour of the old series. avoid at all costs (and i'm saying this as a thurman- and fiennes-fan, for god's sake...)
Dancer in the Dark (2000)
scandinavian sorrows
you love lars von trier? good. you love björk? good. because if you have any problem with these two strong characters, you will loathe this movie. it's an absolute necessity to know and accept the style of these two, otherwise they can be irritating to some people. but since I do adore both von trier and björk, this movie was a must-see for me. björk is absolutely incredible, almost painfully so, and truly deserved her palme d'or. von trier once again tells a story about pain, twisted kinds of love, betrayal and the urge to break out and, well ... grow. and he does it without compromise. oh, and the music... what genius!
Ma femme est une actrice (2001)
french dial-a-cliche
a big disappointment. though the basic idea is very much a cliche (man is jealous of acting wife), I expected the movie to be poignant and filled with sharp one-liners. but no, the dialogues are utterly vacuous, and yvan as yvan is seriously getting on one's nerves after a while. in the end, charlotte and yvan solve their problems by having a child. now, this says a lot about the movie, i think,
Iedereen beroemd! (2000)
who's loving retro disco glam trash? we do!
... but of course it's much more than that. it's a story about family, love, and the media. and even if you think this sounds pretty horrible, it must be said that all these topics are treated in a very unique way. everything's over the top, certainly, but one still believes the characters, their problems, the way things get out of control. even though the freddie mercury impersonator really must be from another planet... the whole design of the film might be reminiscent of movies like muriel's wedding (you know the deal: ugly people + glitter= everyone is special), but it still has a soul of its own.
