Rupan sansei: Kariosutoro no shiro (1979)
A Thief Stole the Princess!
This was my first interaction with the Lupin III world and I loved it.
At first I believed that Lupin was a egoist womanizer (and maybe he is), but he jumped into action selflessly to save the princess, even before remembering who she was, and risked everything for her. He acted like a true cliche hero, and I think that was the fairy tale atmosphere that the director wanted to make.
Clarisse also acted like a true cliche damsel in distress, and at least I fell in love with her cuteness and innocence.
The animation was a piece art, I couldn't believe it was a movie from the '70s. Each scenery was perfect: The castle, the ruins, the background.... It really represented the european beauty.
As always Hideo Miyazaki doesn't dissapoint, even in his first movie!
La dolce vita (1960)
Too Many Stories With No Ending
Watching this movie, I felt like being abandoned to a raging sea of events, stories and characters with too little connection and meaning between them.
I really liked the character of Marcello Mastroianni (That and the aesthetic of the scenes was the only thing I liked, I think), as he was also abandoned to that raging sea of the journalist life, surrounded by sex, parties and paparazzi.
The message of the movie was really hard to get, maybe If I see it again I would feel different, but now for me was a very long movie, with too many barely related stories.
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
A Homage to Cinema
My Grandpa always tells me about cinema in the 50's and 60's, and this movies reminded me of all those stories. At that time the TV wasn't what it is today, so the cinema was a very important cultural, informative and social place for every town or city. But besides that, my Grandpa loves movies, and when I see Salvatore falling in love with them it makes me think that my gradpa was a "real life Salvatore" when he was a kid.
The relation between Salvatore and Alfredo was the other thing I liked the most, that was true friendship. The love for the cinema that both of them had, made that friendship stronger even though the age difference. Also, Alfredo was a fatherly figure for young Salvatore and always wanted the best for him, even if that meant no seeing him never again (Although that was a bit exaggerated, Salvatore could have go to visit once in a while)
The soundtrack, the scenery, all the old movies topic was gorgeus.
The only thing I didn't like was that I didn't feel that the love story between Toto and Elena had a proper ending.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
A entertaining sci-fi movie
I really liked the main character. He was the kind of hero that you never expect to see losing a fight. His team partners were also vert interesting characters. It is shame that it didn't have a sequel, it had potential.
Vivir dos veces (2019)
A nice story about Alzheimer
It was another film about Alzheimer, so it won't surprise you if what your are looking for is a nice story about love, family and old age.
Oscar Martinez is one of the best Argentinean actors, his role of a grumpy and clever old man, that is terrified about his future, is fantastic. Then, when the disease is at it's peak, he does a very good personification of a person with dementia.
The girl, Mafalda Carbonell, also does an amazing job. The duo of grandpa and granddaughter steals the movie.
Finally, what I like to highlight is the scenery. It was a real bless to the eye, and it makes you want to travel to Spain right now.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Whatever happened to man's best friend?
I love dogs and I love Japanese culture... and this movie has both!
The movie is a visual marvel, is a real spectacle to the eyes. The dogs are lovely, specially their eyes which are always full of emotion. A few scenes should be in a museum, as they are true pieces of art; for example the sushi cooking and the operation of Atari and the mayor Kobayashi. These scenes also represent the discipline and search of perfection in which most Japanese do every task.
The story is easy to comprehend. I didn't like that the original pack of dogs (Rex, Boss, Duke, King and Chief) looses their role as the film moves forward, with the exception of Chief, but that is for Spots to shine. The character of Atari was really ambiguous, sometimes I felt that he was evil as his uncle... maybe all dogs sometimes have that fear for their masters.
I personally like the representation of the Japanese culture, but I believe it was exaggerated sometimes. Also, there were too many scenes in Japanese without translation and that made the movie a bit dense.
Finall, I loved the reaction of the pack of dogs to the arrival of Atari, as it represents that a dog will never betray their masters, regardless what is done to them. They loyalty is unbreakable.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
A really interesting plot... A not very good movie
I watched this movie with high expectations, and now I feel a bit dissapointed.
The movie has everything to be outstanding ( A very good and original plot, and great actors) but somehow it fails to create that deep feeling that a love story should have, and it fails in being interesting.Even the side story of Mary and Howard capitavated me more than the main one.
I hated Joel (I think it was the worst character of Jim Carrey I ever saw) and I hated even more the side characters Stan and Patrick, you could erase then from the movie and you won't even notice. Patrick was a jerk yeah, but I didn't really felt angry at him for going after Clementine. He was the type of person that you can't care enough.
The movie was also too predictable after a while. There were really few "WOW!" moments, and not so very important.
Finally, Clem and Joel relationship was not really lovable. In a movie where love is the main theme, you have to feel the love between the characters, wish them happiness with all your hearth and cry when they can't be together. I tried, but I could't feel that for this couple.
Above the Law (1988)
A nice action movie, with a complicated and not really interesting plot
I really liked Steven Seagal role in this movie. The cold and deffiant personality of Tony was excelent, and he was the kind of rough protagonist you like to see in an action movie. That and the action scenes were the only things that kept me watching until the end.
The plot was really complicated to understand. In fact, there was a part in the movie that Tony summarizes it, in order for the expectator to get it. I think the problem is that there were many factions or groups in the film, and you can't understand until the end the conection between them (And honestly the movie is not interesting enough for you to really care).
Green Book (2018)
True friendship surpass any differences
The chemistry between Tony and Doc is fantastic. Thet are completly opposites, but the situation they are in brings them closer and closer.
Also, both actors made an absolutly remarkable work.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
It should be the smart, instead of the good
This is one of the first Western films I've ever seen... I should probable watch it a again in a few years. I liked the movie, but it was reaaally slow.
What I liked the most about the movie (excluding the soundtrack, which was terrific) is the character of Tuco, and the relation he had with Blondie. There were moments when I hated Tuco, and a few minutes later I feeled sorry for him... He was the most balanced or more human character in the movie. He was bad yeah, but not entirely bad. Blondie liked him but didn't thrust him completly, and that was the right thing to do. I loved that sometimes they helped eachother, and sometimes they wanted to kill eachother guts.
I must admit that the final scene is simply fantastic. That triple duel was one of the most amazing scenes I've ever seen.
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
A very human, animal story
I don't generally like slow motion movies, but I really loved this one. Not just the animals, but the scenario was a piece of art: always giving you the feeling of an eternal autum.
What I think is also remarkable about this movie is how it combines the humanization of the animals characters with their wild nature. These two natures are always in balance in this movie, so the spectator doesn't forget that while acting just like humans, they don't stop being wild creatures. This film reminds you that even if we live in a civilization with many rules, we have dreams and deep desires that we must satisfy. That is something that every person needs to do at some point of their lives, and that is what Mr. Fox does.
Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta (1986)
Simply beautiful
As always Studio Ghibli creates worlds that makes your heart dream. The chemistry and child's love between Paku and Sheeta is one of the things I liked the most. The animation is a piece of art.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
A fairy tale Tarantino style
Before watching the movie, it's necessary that you research a little about the Sharon Tate murder and the Manson Family. If you don't do that, you won't completly understand and appreciate this film.
The movie is really slow most of the time, in order for you to submerge in the 60's ambientation, and to grow fond with the characters. But if you like Tarantino and good cinema, you will be delighted with it.
Di Caprio and Brad Pitt are stunning as always, nothing more to say about them. Margot plays perfectly the angelical role of Sharon Tate, a nice homage to her.
