Vulgar (2000)
excellent
In true viewaskew productions tradition this is another indie cracker. The director Bryan Johnson(also the guy who plays "Steve Dave" in Kevin Smiths films) ventures out on his own, and does a great job. Other Kevin Smith favourites including himself & Brian O Halloran (Dante) star in this funny flick about the funny/sad/crude clown named flappy, who turns dirty in order seek fame. If you ever wondered the relevance of the dodgy clown in the viewaskew logo, you now know. Very funny stuff. Make the effort to see this one.
La haine (1995)
realism at its finest
This film simply follows 24 hours in the lives of 3 teen-agers, all of different religions, trying to get by in the rough, dangerous surroundings of an urban estate in Paris. The narrative seems to make up the background for the director to put his true meanings across to the audience. Its documentary style & gritty cinematography all add well to the effectiveness of the picture.
This is the most metaphorical film i have ever seen, Kassovitz uses intelligent & imaginative methods to put his feelings (essentially this is a "police hate") across. Visual props are used & also look out for messages on posters, billboards etc.
Overall this is a very provocative, harrowing & often hilarious buddy movie, which acts as a real eye-opener as to what a s***-hole France is.Go see this movie for a whole spectrum of emotions and feelings. Excellent.
Killers (1997)
bad, abhorrent, abominable, atrocious............
.......awful, base, beastly, blameworthy, corrupt... I could go on to use every single obscure adjective in the dictionary to describe how bad this movie really is, but i can`t be bothered! I usually only comment on movies i like, but i couldn`t resist having a pop at this pathetic effort. Where can i start, the direction was awful, the acting was ........ahh what is the point.
DO NOT RENT THIS MOVIE, YOU WILL FEEL BAD IF YOU WASTE 2 HOURS OF YOUR LIFE ON IT.
At least now i know not to rent a movie just because it has a cool reference and intriguing back cover ! -3 out of 10.
Lola rennt (1998)
an amazing rush.
This is the most unique & original film i have ever seen, true being unique does not always make it good but here it does. This is a "what if" film, it follows an red-haired eccentric woman in a trek across the city. It shows her journey in three different scenarios with different possibilities & outcomes. This film is very short but crammed with more detail than most directors would not use in a three hour epic! Some people may find the subtitles off-putting but there is so little speech, you come to hardly notice them. This film is definitely not for everyone, the techno soundtrack could repel some older viewers, but you should rent this movie if you are into original, adrenalin pumping action.
Chasing Amy (1997)
The best work Smith has done
Clerks was exceptional,Mallrats was brilliant but Chasing Amy.....well is simply the best. This is a modern love story exploring the sexuality of the confused main characters. The film starts off extremely funny like Smiths other films with sharp wit & dialogue, but the second half is more serious & often quite touching. Smith blends the this nicely with the humor. This almost turns into a strong drama with lots of tension being built up between the outstanding main characters, but luckily does not. The references to the people in Clerks like Caitlan > are nice & make the film almost feel like a sequel. The cameo from Jay & silent Bob was also first-rate. This film also contains the funniest line ever: " Since you like chicks right, do you just look at yourself naked in the mirror". Go see this flawless movie. 10 out of 10.
Clerks (1994)
Very funny but.....
Although this film was extremely funny and well written it did become a bit irritating. Dantes constant moan of " I should not even be here today" became annoying and his acting was slightly wooden, saying that the acting was not the key to the film being great. The few scenes in which Randal & Dante were engaged in quick, sharp conversation were excellent and easy to watch again and again. The feeling you got that Jay and maybe Randall was gay was also clever and very amusing.
This is another good example of the decent work to come out of the Sundance festival. Kevin Smith came out of this film shining, sadly the actors could not match his quality. If you go into this flick with an open mind not expecting too much, you will come feeling happy and probably still laughing trying to remember some of the great lines. 7.5 out of 10.
