I truly don't understand why this episode is being rated so low. It's actually a decent episode.

'Modern Family' S10 was an odd affair - seeming one minute to be trying to wrap the show up, the next minute trying to create new directions for it to go.
Good enough ratings and ABC's desire to keep it going mean that this episode starts an 11th and final 'farewell' series.
And there are some nice moments here. The Phil/Claire storyline dealing with Haley's babies (surely the main focus of this 11th year?) is lovely, and I liked how the writers have dealt with Manny now he's an adult.
Poor old Alex fares less well, and perhaps the writers have struggled to find new ways to keep her funny.
The Mitch/Cam storyline isn't great either.
A decent start overall.

So sad to see how far this show has fallen. Used to be one of the most well-written shows on TV. Now the season premiere is about a dog bed commercial and a clown statue? Such a disappointing start to the final season.
Good episode that doesn't feel like a premier

Warning: Spoilers
The last modern family premiere has good moments and funny twists that take you by surprise.
Phil and Claire Dunphy are hilarious in this episode when they try to get Haley to sleep so they can use their own parenting methods and get Haley's twins to stop crying. There is funny dialogue and Haley at the end of the episode shows her true feelings about being a mother so far and we can't not feel bad for her and hope her instincts kick in.
In Cameron's storyline we see him bringing round students that are on their way to a bad future to his house but when his clown statue disappears he suspects it was one of them. The acting is good and some things Cameron says sound inappropriate causing Mitch and lily to be embarrassed. This story line has many twists and turns and ends with a funny conclusion.
Jay is doing his dog bed commercial and Manny is directing it. Turns out that Manny's ex girlfriend Sherry is doing the voice for the dog and Manny tries to win her back. Though this is the least funny and interesting storyline it still has some witty lines throughout and some good moments.
Whilst all this is happening, Alex is in Antarctica researching stuff and she gets in contact with all the family members but they are all busy with their own problems. It is clear she is not enjoying it but there was funny moments with one of the men she was working with.
Overall a funny episode but I thought the storylines didn't feel like a premiere of a last season.

Least Favorite Premiere

Warning: Spoilers
I totally forgot the others but the last episode before this, the clan was always together and I was hoping that for the last premiere they would show a usual storyline where everyone deals with their silly problems in the Pritchett's house and then end with a nice full of wisdom voiceover and montage. All together!
The storylines were at best fine but anything about Jay and his love for Stella I really love, too. There wasn't much of that. Only more of Manny and Sherry which was okay with Gloria's help but still I can live without.
While not that funny, I understand the hardship of creating a storyline for the Dunphys. It's hard to think of a unique storyline that would 1) fit the family in terms of roles or part and 2) feel relatable to many but not cliche and 3) not a gag done in the previous eps in previous seasons (baby Lily and Joe storylines).
I understand the frustrations of the audience who have been watching since the beginning but if you don't love it anymore, you can just stop watching it. Don't ruin it for us who still enjoy it and even in the bad storylines, find the silver lining. Calling something trash also makes for a trashy review.

This episode is below par. Also, the "stereotypical" nordic guy is just too cheap. First; "Yngvar" is not a finnish name (It's mostly used in Norway and Sweden). Second; a nordic (let alone from anywhere) scientist who doesn't know how to speak english doesn't exist. Not funny, just lazy and annoying.
So bad

Nothing worse than watching a show that used to be entertaining limp through its final season premiere. Not only is it unrefreshing to watch characters not support each other, it also features way too much Manny been a talentless embarrassment to the show that used to captivate millions
Sick of Cam

Warning: Spoilers
I used to be crazy in love with this show. But episode by episode, Cam's obsession and his overeaction makes me sick. Insult a bunch of kids because of a Stupid stupid stupid clown?!?! Then we have Manny, a mini version of crazy Cam. Then we have Haley with an unrealistic book. Totally a mess
Horrifically predictable

Not only was manny able to continue to drag the series down, the writing resembled the creativity of a fifth grader. Let's not waste the electricity needed to produce something more entertaining like a portable toilet

Just awful
NothingGoodToWatch10 January 2020
It's sad that a great show has gone so downhill. It's seems as though the writers etc just get a list from the network of whatever agendas and stereotypes they're supposed to to push for that episode and the poor guys just try to create whatever horrible plot line they can around those agendas. This is what entertainment has become and modern family is a perfect example of this. Shame on the creators for being such sell outs.

Come on Modern Family, you could have done better but you put this out instead? I already don't like the Claire character and her decision to just dismiss her daughter is infuriating. Guess what Claire?! Haley was right to treat you like you didn't know what you were doing! Grandma sneaking in baby formula had me livid. It was not her place to do so and ESPECIALLY when Mom doesn't want to offer it! I wish TV would take this topic seriously and stop perpetuating myths about breastfeeding. It 100% matters what you feed your children! Don't be fooled by advertising! The entire episode had me cringing, not to mention the whole Cam and Mitch debacle.
Horrible way to start off the season
juhoeron8 November 2021
Surely a lot of people got a bad taste of this whole season because of this premiere episode. While not awful, the storyline is just boring. Very few of the jokes are funny, and the ones that are are carried on for way too long, like the situation with cam and mitch. It was nice to hear a little bit of finnish at the end, but Yngvar is not a finnish name and a scientist from any of the nordic countries would surely speak english. This just shows the lack of any research or tought put into this episode. One of the weakest episodes of the whole series.

How can anyone watch seasons 10 & 11?
corinnebernatt11 December 2021
As soon as Hayley was pregnant - especially with Dylan (Barf) they degraded the show and the character. Also after season 9 can no longer look at the actresses who have MANGLED their faces. Why do these women do this to themselves. I already could not look at Claire in season 8, but Hayley in 9 on? Alex and Gloria? Awful. Unbearable to look at and unbearable to watch - the characters are nothing of what they were in seasons 1-8. 9 should have been it.
Disappointing character build for Cam

Warning: Spoilers
I believe this episode highlights the concerning shift in the abilities of the MF creators. Although this series has gradually lost some of its appeal since season 6, it has managed to maintain its heartwarming portrayal of three loving families. That's why it saddens me to observe that, starting from season 10, the creators seem to have lost a firm grip on the storyline and character development.
In s11e01, I noticed how manipulative Cam has become, which sharply contrasts with his earlier depiction as a drama queen who always cared for everyone. It's disheartening to witness a character with such a kind disposition setting traps for their loved ones, causing them to feel ashamed, and ultimately taking advantage of them. This is completely unacceptable and introduces toxicity into what was initially a comedy. It's disheartening to see the creators introduce such a plot twist and undermine the previously established character, and as a devoted viewer, it's disappointing to witness this change.

Acting MasterclAss

If you wanna showcase some of the great acting on Modern Family, this show is NOT the one to choose. I would've watched the previous 10 seasons if they were just a Ty Burrell monologue, and while there have been peaks and troughs in the show previously, this episode seems to be a perfect t storm of disjointed and uninteresting storylines, dialogue with zero nuance, and again... the acting! It looks like a drunken table read. Hope the season improves from here.
They clearly stopped caring about quality but...
rboehm572-682-92048828 July 2023
Do they not remember this series is shot as a documentary? There is a generous amount of leeway when it comes to these types of shows, but Modern Family just broke the mold.
The opening shot of Alex walking in Arctic with coordinates on the screen was the most glaring "we don't give $@&% anymore and it shows" moment I've seen on TV.
Who filmed that? Did the documentary crew set up for an exterior shot in Antarctica? Would risking frostbite or death be worth it?
The quality dropped off five seasons ago but this simple scene treats the audience like they're idiots.
American shows need to learn from the British and end a show before it becomes something like this.
