Not worth a watch.
pixiepug-1993511 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Youtube rewind 2018, "giving the community what they want". It's so amazing that youtube supported something from the depths of hell, Baby Shark. I know that it was very popular, but anyone who has watched this can agree with me that no parents are going to let their 3 year olds watch this. I've been on youtube since 2012, and what the community has morphed into is sort of good. It was mostly EPIC games, EPIC game fortntie (feat NINJA the "best" (sarcasm) actor in history) all and all, if you want to watch this, do it with ad block on because youtube spotlight doesn't deserve the one cent it gives them.

Almost a 1/10

If it weren't for what Jaiden Animations did in the YouTube Rewind 2018, this would have been a 1/10. Other than that, very bad.

Out of touch

The whole video just ignore most of what happen in 2018. They ignore the whole community even though the whole premise of the video is "everyone control rewind". This clearly shows in the amount of this like this video get 5million in just 2 days over done before

Poor YouTube
josephellis18 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Let's make a video to show of how disconnected we are from our own audience! It will feature YouTube celebs like Will Smith? Ninja? Drag Queens? And people you probably haven't heard of! Put in that annoying as hell Baby Shark song. Oh, lets ruin society by putting Fortnite into it! Put in some K-pop, and some Fortnite dances to the side.... it'll be perfect!

Trash
usagallifrey1 June 2019
Not including PewDiePie was a crime. YouTube doesn't care about what the viewers like. They just want to push their political agenda. No one watches YouTube drag queens. They were included in rewind. The biggest YouTube event in years, Pewds v T-Series was not mentioned at all. It was hosted by Will Smith. He's cool and all, but he isn't a YouTuber. He's an actor. It's YouTube rewind. PewDiePie made a better one. It summarized the year. Watch it if you haven't.

YouTube has forgotten the community
rootatkali11 December 2018
This entire video just ignored the important events in the YouTube community this year. It contained no mention to the deaths of Stan Lee and other important people this year, and even the "inspirational" part felt cheap and out of place.

Lots of "irrelevanties"
sukarnoissxy10 December 2018
Alas, all participants in the whole Youtube Rewind video are youtubers who mostly irrelevant, average, popular etc.

Also why Ninja appear on Youtube Rewind? Ninja is actually an "often" Twitch "Fortnite" streamer but he had had Youtube channel just for uploading videos in a "random and less-fun" manner.

"No swear words here"

As messy as always
Horst_In_Translation18 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Okay the title here "YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind" already summarizes pretty well what this short film is about. Every December of the year Youtube releases a video that features that year's most relevant influencers (ugh I hate that word for a profession, but yeah they are making millions) and each of them gets a little screen time. This time it runs for a bit over 8 minutes and the contents go with the idea of giving people "what they want". Oh my. Well, I did not get what I want here, that much is safe. I hardly knew any of the people and the only parallel I see is that they are all at least mildly attractive, some more some less, and that is probably one reason that made them famous. Anyway, back to the overall idea. They pick some references that many people seem to care about like Fortnite or K-Pop this year, serious pop culture trends we got, and elaborate on them a bit. And towards the end we see them show some random Youtube comments and go on about these, 2 or 3 perhaps, but yeah it is what everybody wants right? I heard a character say something in German during one second or so and then at the very end I read that this was Dagi Bee. I will not go into detail about her honestly, but lets say she is not seen as a trustworthy person who genuinely cares about anything other than her profit here in Germany for everybody who can see through the charade. That's enough on the subject I guess. Really disappointed in Will Smith too I think he turned 50 recently and seeing him support stuff like that, especially with many of the really questionable decisions by Youtube against audiences and uploaders. And here they are trying to convince us it is all good like every year. But yeah, it's not them who have to react, but it is us the viewers and our reaction should bring a reaction from them. But now I am getting too far away. This under 10-minute video here gets a huge thumbs-down from me of course. It is as bad as the last editions, even if I am surprise to finally see the 1.0 here on imdb for one of these.

It's not very good
Elledge_J14 December 2018
A part of me feels like we've been spoiled by the appearance of YouTube Rewind. The first couple years Rewind had made its yearly appearance viewers everywhere were consistently enchanted by the sheer spectacle of seeing their favorite content creators gather almost annually to pay tribute to the great trends of the year. For a long time, many felt that Rewind was a special gift from the platform to its audience. One that we found hilarious, dazzling, and somewhat exhilarating to watch. As we relished in the memes of the past year, the sheer display of choreography, various set pieces, celebrity and beyond made us excited for the coming year. Unfortunately, these rewinds can only get so big, and like many big things that reach there zenith too soon, the moment they've done all that they could do with the concept of Rewind what you're left with in the impending future is a platform now grasping at straws for a "bigger" extravaganza than the last "bigger" extravaganza. It's no doubt that YouTube can still salvage a great video out of the Rewind formula in 2019, but if it's anything like this video we've got a definite problem on our hands. Let's break this down into chunks shall we instead of trying to attack this thing all once, because doing otherwise will just boggle my mind further.

The Premise So the premise of YouTube Rewind 2018 seems to be that "everyone controls Rewind" which already confuses me at the out. I'm not sure what this video is getting at when it says everyone controls Rewind this year? Is that to say in the past the YouTubers has no control of rewind? I've never really thought of it like that until right this moment, but the way it's executed is really sloppy. If everyone controls Rewind then why is it that celebrities and a handful of YouTubers are the ones making all the choices. The herald of this video centers around a campfire of YouTubers realizing that the following Rewind video is up to them, so now they get to decide what's in the video. They then begin suggesting trends and "celebrities" that should appear in the Rewind, half of which were only popular this year by the way, before they get sidetracked in a contrived segment about the important things that happened last year, even though it comes off more as a rambling afterthought than a solemn tribute. Ultimately after the whole angle of giving the viewers what they want comes about, some more trends show up and the video ends without any real payoff or climax. I find that the problem with this year's Rewind is that there's no real build and payoff like the other Rewinds. The majesty of the other Rewinds was that they took a concept, got their trendy mileage out of it, had their little show, gradually built up the excitement and had a steady resolution. As bad as last year's Rewind was it still had good buildup and a steady payoff, this year the concept is so banal and the trends are so saturated and out of touch that there's a distinct absence in spectacle and no real resolution. The concept is endearing enough and could lead to some good content, but the people in charge of this video clearly didn't have any passion for the end product.

The Memes/Celebrities Will Smith, Ninja, Trevor Noah, Jon Oliver... my favorite YouTubers. I have never seen so many personalities in one room look so lifeless. It's not enough to have a group of celebrities in one place to make your video great, because if they don't have a great premise to work with then chances are they're not gonna make your video better. It's saying something when such charismatic YouTubers like Liza Koshy, The Try Guys and Swoozie don't leave a lasting impact on your video. For all the YouTubers that we're able to come together, they strangely have very little to do except stand around and talk nonsense from a shoddy script. Seeing them in the same place doing half baked things such as reference K-Pop and spout out vignettes of Mason Ramsey ice skating, mukbang, and something about a metal ball and ASMR just goes to show how out of touch YouTube is with its creators and its audience. Rewind should reflect the zeitgeist and standout creators of the year, they should pay tribute to the great YouTube videos and YouTubers of the year- and it should be those YouTubers that pay tribute to the trends of the year. Instead we've spoon-fed things that YouTube glanced at once on a trending page and decided that that was enough to make for a entertaining video. I understand that Fortnite was a popular game and everything but it shouldn't have to take up half of your entire video. What should be an exciting retrospective on internet entertainment is reduced to a slideshow of lifelessness that masquerades as a celebration of life and diversity... speaking of which.

The Preach Much like last year, Rewind 2018 tries to earn merit for addressing serious issues, from mental health to Asian representation to working moms. This in theory would be fine but the way its executed teeters between pandering and complete pointlessness. All the potentially important topics they reference are only discussed through drive by interviews with horribly vague writing. There are some potentially heartwarming topics to really delve into (Markiplier & Make A Wish) but instead its tacked on and given considerably less screen time compared to dialogue of "the empowering art of drag." Whereas last year's dramatic real-talk segment was pandering to the extreme, this particular segment has a similar aftertaste but is just as half-baked as the rest of this video.

I guess what my problem is that this year's Rewind lacks the spirit and imagination of previous Rewinds. The lack of passion or thought really shines in this vapid and disinteresting torrent of cockamamie fads and the new-aged indulgence of diversity which in no way feels earned. Because all in all you know something's wrong with your video when you're mission statement is to celebrate a year of diverse entertainment and original content and baby shark gets put in the spotlight near the end.

At least the animators got more attention this time around.

I HAD to give this a 10/10 for a reason (read the review and you'll see why)

If it weren't for YouTube Rewind 2018 I would have actually never discovered Jaiden Animations. I first saw her with the PewDiePie references in a clip and I thought that was amazing so I went to check out her channel and oh my god were the content there so inspiring and relatable. She quickly became my #1 MOST favourite YouTuber of all time (even surpassing some old favourites). So yeah, I just HAD to give YouTube Rewind 2018 a 10/10 for making me discover Jaiden Animations. Thanks so much YouTube for including her! :)

Bad Rewind.
jbehnejb11 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The YouTube Rewind 2018 was just a cringefest. I already knew that this year's rewind is just Fortnite here, Fortnite there, Fortnite this and Fortnite that. Also I'm disappointed that PewDiePie wasn't included in this year's rewind. And I think it's for the best because, like I said, it's just a cringefest. But instead we got some irrelevant youtubers I don't even know and some celebrities from TV shows and movies who are always in the "YouTube Trends". Speaking of PewDiePie, Jaiden Animations putted Pewds' chair in this year's rewind.

Most disliked video on Youtube

Warning: Spoilers
Before Youtube removed all the visible dislikes from that website (In order to protect the feelings of big corporations and out of touch celebrities) this used to be the most disliked video on Youtube. Never forget that.

I think we should read the comments... I hope you would've.

I honestly don't even care about Youtube Rewinds, but I'm writing this anyway. Youtube has embarrassed themselves for quite awhile, from Youtube heroes to the last Rewind, it has been just a f#cking sh#tshow. Now, let me ask you, what were the most hated things in 2018? Well, the simple answer is: Fortnite, and mukbang, and asmr. Now, where was the memes? Like, 2018 was an important year for memes and there was just a few of them. Like, what the actual f#ck? And the problem isn't even that, because all of the really important Youtubers are left out. Like, without PewDiePie the Youtube wouldn't be what it is right now.

Yeah, this rewind was sh#t and, yeah, Alejandro G. Inarritu to direct Youtube Rewind 2019.

The perfect example of a cringefest
STORM69103615 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
From the very start after Will smith said "Yahh" I said "Oh god no" and throughout the video it's likely you'll say "Who?" "Who are any of you?" Which I'm gonna stop but it's a trend and how instead of giving mentions to some criminally underrated creators or spreading awareness of article 13, we get a bad dance fest and some rather dated memes like John Oliver, Bongo Cat and Agee or Noah with more pandering, self congratulation and desperate attempts to be good. It earned it's dislikes. Me-2018 Me today-2022 "Oh wow this video has 3 million likes and no dislikes that must be good. This will benefit us all."

History "Will" Remember This (sorry for the pun)
buihai-8560923 December 2023
Imagine it's 2018 and you're YouTube - the embodiment of a multi-billion dollar platform with years of experience in the video making industry and trends as a whole; and you decided that everyone should "controls rewind" that year, what would you think it's going to be?

That would be great in theory, because it would democratized the rewind that you're planning and everyone'll be happy for what they expect (because the highlights, trends and events were created by the people and not muti-million or even billion dollar companies/content farmers)

Now imagine that Baby Shark are more important than this! That's the 2018 rewind oversimplified...
