Goodwin had good intentions but like other plantation owners. He needs the former slaves to work the land.

However the former slaves refuse to work seven days a week. Goodwin shifts to more harsh methods like increasing their rent and even resorting to violence.

In the end Goodwin is a broken man, his former slaves abandoned him.

It does lead Caroline to take back her authority and drive July out of their lives.

The Long Song is a bittersweet story and at times horrifying. There is a false happy ending tagged on but then a more realistic one for July. Isolation and poverty but a chance of happiness does eventually arrive.

Recently began researching my Southern family history. Revealed that My GGG father owned a plantation and salves. Also discovered, he had a liaison with a Haitian woman, unknown if she was one of his slaves. This is very eye opening . Additionally, there were two children of this union which means more relatives I want to identify and meet current offspring of their forefathers.
