Unexpected, that was terrific.

Fair play to Al Weaver, Leonard finally gets to take centre stage, and helped deliver a truly great episode. Best of the series thus far, it was very different to all that have gone before, it somehow felt very fresh, the start of a new era possibly. I loved the story of Geordie and his wife's anniversary, that provided an unexpected twist,

I enjoyed the mystery itself, very very imaginative, a story that had me guessing til the end, but the ultimate triumph was Leonard's, we saw his funny side, his caring side, and his sad side, the scene where he accepts he's not getting the job was very touching, and brilliantly played out, the look on Weaver's fave throughout I thought was utterly sincere. I'm glad we have the new Vicar, though it seems like ages since we first saw him, but hopefully a bit more of Leonard will follow.

Lots of life in this show yet. 9/10

Pleasantly surprised

I didn't know Sidney was leaving and was very concerned about the show moving forward. While watching this episode, I realized that it was a relief not watching Sidney fight his demons. Yes, the episode lacked the chemistry of the original crime fighting duo, but Leonard proved an interesting partner for Geordie.

New and Fresh

I enjoyed Sidney's character very much, but over time his excessive drinking and carrying on got rather tired. Geordie is a much more interesting character and he shined in this episode. We will see how the new guy does and how Leonard will manage after the landlady saw what she saw. There are some touching scenes here with humans being humans. The business with Geordie's wife is a really interesting development.

The show is called GRANTCHESTER
terrycowan-4576422 July 2019
NOT Sidney. And yes, Norton did a great job of showing how troubled his character was. But as we saw through three seasons including wartime flashbacks, Sidney was on a journey, searching. And when he found what he hadn't even realized he was seeking, he was smart enough to go after her & find his peace. So his journey continues & I thought the final episode was a great tribute to an excellent character. But Grantchester has other excellent characters & I will continue to follow their stories. In no way is Grantchester p.c., post-War was an era of huge social change, how could it not be? And we get to watch some of those changes happen on a personal level. As pastoral & bucolic as Grantchester seems, there is so much more going on beneath, totally true to the village of 2,200 I lived in decades ago. I am totally looking forward to seeing how our new young motorcycle-riding preacher varies from the excellent Mr. Chambers.

Soldiers On

Grantchester soldiers on without the handsome and troubled Sidney Chambers. But the other characters don't disappoint. They have all still have growing to do.

To the homophobes who want to straight wash history: There's nothing revisionist about depicting gay people in the 1950s. Gay people have existed in every century. Leonard represents the countless of men of God who have struggled to have their vocations honored simply because they are gay. My advice is to actually study history before you attack the accuracy of characters like Leonard.

A pleasant interlude before the new vicar
TheDudeReviewsStuff12 July 2023
Overall a nicely done episode. Not quite up to the same level as the better episodes with Sidney, but still quite enjoyable.

The Bletchley references are nicely done as Alex is an Alan Turing type character. Complete genius who was a big part of WWII, but never recognized due to his proclivities. A sad commentary on how someone who changed the course of the war was treated.

Watching the interaction of Geordie and Leonard was quite fun. Geordie has grown since the early episodes and has come to realize that his prior ideas of how those who have a different view of love are still people and worthy of respect. Leonard is becoming more of a Chaplin inside of just a curate. Geordie's wife is assaulted by her boss at the store and shows an inner strength that did not exist prior to Geordie's dalliance.

Overall a very enjoyable episode that shows the growth of the characters and leads into the next episode with the introduction of the new vicar.

Not much left...

...without Sidney, is dull. Sidney and Geordie work/friendship was the main attraction for this show. Their dialogues were priceless. Now, without vicar Chambers, and with so much political correctness is sooo boring. For me, Grantchester is finished.

When will they ever learn?
centaur113531 January 2019
Series 4. Quote from the Radio Times web site: "The new series will also see characters tackling themes such as homosexuality, racism and female equality."

So its going the sanctimonious and proselytising way that's killing (or killed) Doctor Who, preaching at us what we must think. Homosexuality and racism have been lectured at us.

Can we have the good old detective drama back without the pontifical indoctrination. Lets be entertained not be homilized in every episode.

It will be the death of Granchester.

No chemistry, no show.
EJKmouse22 July 2019
The chemistry and charisma and the ensemble cast aspects of this once reliable soap/mystery have gone completely out of the series. It's boring, preachy and just plain dull. The only entertaining scenes in this episode were those btw the curate played by Al Weaver and the always reliable Robson Green. Everything else fell flat. Some shows can survive actor departures and some cannot. This one seems headed for the dustbin in another season or two.

No Rev C so becomes nothing outstanding -Based on the novels... The first advert was for PureCremations - no vicar needed also 😳😬😱 Gone totally PC and totally unlikeable characters now at the forefront. Dull and tedious and annoying..

characters gutted

Warning: Spoilers
Sidney got out just in time. The show till this season was a pleasant look back at an earlier time. Complexities existed, as did contradictions and paradoxes. It was charming though, with well acted and convincing characters. Imperfect people who behaved consistently in varied circumstances. Now, central characters behave in completely random ways (Sidney not leaving church for divorced love of his life, but leaving everything after 2 episodes with a new character, suddenly Geordie and Cathy are hunky dory after his prolonged infidelity), or previously nuanced characters just behaving like shallow shadows of themselves (Leonard now a clown as he accompanies Geordie on police business). Complete absence of previous characters without any explanation- Margaret, Phil, the dog Dickens..

More power to you if you like the changes, but I'm out.

Once again Georgie is an ass
Apd22723 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure why they're all acting like will is new. And once again these vicars put their faith in this cop only to be betrayed. It's just ridiculous. And does anyone remember this Mrs whoever's new husband left his pregnant girlfriend to fend for herself??? Ah the church.
