MotherFatherSon still intrigues in its heightened reality of the the struggles of the rich and successful.

Max tells Kathryn that she has got what she always wanted. Custody of Caden. What she has got is trying to rehabilitate her brain damaged grown up son.

Max is in Mexico, working on his next big deal and speaking Spanish badly. He might be just trying to get away from Caden. At least he realises that Caden will never match his own business acumen and is prepared to tell him that. However Max never recognises his own shortcomings as a dad and he is the one running away.

It is Kathryn who oversees Caden's rehabilitation in an army camp. Something Max has arranged by pulling a few favours.

The drama so far still toys with the viewer about Max. Is there a lurking monster beneath him or is he just cold and calculating? It is interesting that Max communicates without it never being needed to be said or asked. A theme that goes back to the first episode. Caden's mistake was asking his dad how well he did after the press conference.

Max's duplicitous attitude is also shown in the probing of the murdered investigator by Nick and Maggie which they think has been covered up. The newspaper executives know about this, Nick has been offered a promotion in America, to get him out of the way. We also see the dirty tricks employed by the staff of the newspaper, planting evidence on a suspect of the murdered girl found in episode 1.

When it comes to the politics and even the murder mystery angle, I have not found the drama that exciting. It comes alive when we see the fractured relationship between Max, Caden and Kathryn.

Niamher a dull moment

The arrival of Niamh Algar brings the show up a notch. Her watery allure is more feminine than she plays in most roles and offers a credible relationship for Caden.

The dynamic and humour clicks well and Billy Howle performs well as the sufferer of a stroke.

Great scenes between Helen McCrory and Richard Gere gives an added edge.

Hopefully, this standard can be maintained.

Warning: Spoilers
Not to rate this 18+ is wrong. We should be warned before watching this, especially with teens. The sex scenes are graphic, lewd in some cases and trash.

The content is very dark and disturbing. Definitely not something one would expect when trying to get into the first few episodes of the series. The acting is very good and well cast, but the drama goes beyond what is acceptable and or really necessary to get the point that the son is severely mentally disturbed even before his self- inflicted car accident. I do not recommend this series for those who want to be entertained and especially want an uplifting experience.
