Regina King is fighting to make a difference as Shirley Chisholm, the first Black congresswoman, in Netflix’s Shirley.
The film tells the story of Chisholm’s trailblazing United States presidential campaign in 1972, making her the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for president and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Her boundary-breaking campaign was marked by its youth engagement as she tried to gain enough delegates to speak at that year’s Democratic National Convention.
The John Ridley film also stars the late Lance Reddick in one of his final roles, as well as Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, André Holland and Terrence Howard.
The two-minute trailer kicks off with King’s Chisholm announcing her presidential candidacy, as she says she’s paving the road for people who look like her to get elected.

Netflix have released the first trailer for Shirley, which stars Regina King as Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to be elected to Congress.
Netflix really has become the home of the biopic. Bradley Cooper and Colman Domingo both have their eyes on the Best Actor Oscar this year for their respective roles in Maestro and Rustin. Anette Bening and True Detective: Night Country star Jodie Foster are also up for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for their turns in Nyad.
The latest real life person to get the Netflix biopic treatment is Shirley Chisholm. She was the first ever Black woman to be elected to Congress but Shirley, John Ridley’s film, is more concerned with her 1972 Presidential campaign run.
Take a look at the Shirley trailer below.

"Fearless. Fierce. First." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for their upoming biopic film titled Shirley, from filmmaker John Ridley following his Nola hospital thriller series Five Days at Memorial just before this. The film is now set for streaming in March on Netflix, and based on early test screening reviews, it's not going to make much of an impact (which is why it didn't open in last year's awards season). Shirley tells the story of the first Black congresswoman in America's history and a political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for President of the United States years ago. It chronicles her audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign. The film stars Regina King in the lead role as Shirley Chisholm, with Lance Reddick (Rip), Terrence Howard, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael Cherrie, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, and André Holland. This looks like a by-the-numbers biopic in every way.

Strange pairings in TV Sitcoms are nothing new. Series like The Honeymooners would have the sort of violent buddy’s of Ralph and Ed, The Flintstones would have Barney and Fred, and of course The Odd Couple would have Oscar and Felix.
But in 1986 a new duo would be added to this list and Friday night TV viewing would never be the same. Cousin Larry and Balki would become a hit power couple for viewers who would fall in love with the quirky pair and their misadventures trying to make it in Chicago.
The series would become a favorite for a number of fans not only in the states but eventually around the world and would spawn a spin off that would become just as big a hit for ABC.

“It’s my first and it’s really lovely,” reflects producer David Hinojosa on receiving the first Oscar nomination of his career for “Past Lives,” which is one of the 10 films nominated for Best Picture. He was on a film set in New York on the morning of the nominations and requested a free trailer to watch the announcement live. The producer shares the recognition with Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, who he says “essentially taught me how to produce movies.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Josephine Decker's 2020 film "Shirley" -- based on the novel by Susan Scarf Merrell -- is a biography of the legendary, and legendarily sour, horror author Shirley Jackson ... sort of.
Elisabeth Moss gives a truly great performance as Jackson, depicting her as a woman out of time, unwilling to play by the stuffy, sexist rules of "polite society." When a hen-like housewife peer of Jackson's whines that she might stain her couch with red wine, it's Jackson's instinct to upend her entire glass onto the upholstery. Jackson is depicted as cantankerous, lethargic, alcoholic, and mean.
"Shirley" centers on the relationship Jackson had with a wide-eyed college student named Rose Namser (Odessa Young), a young woman who is optimistic, happy in her new marriage, and eager to raise her unborn child. Jackson is childless and, as the film progresses, will reveal her resentment of that fact. Jackson is happy-ish in her marriage,...

Richard Moll, the fun-loving actor who portrayed the towering and tenderhearted bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon on all nine seasons of the popular NBC sitcom Night Court during its original run, has died. He was 80.
Moll died peacefully Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, his publicist announced.
Suitable for his 6-foot-8 frame, Moll played an abominable snowman alongside Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach in the comedy feature Caveman (1981), and he was a scary, decomposing Vietnam veteran in the horror film House (1986).
Moll also did lots of voiceover work, with a regular gig as the immortal bodyguard Norman on the syndicated series Mighty Max and turns as Harvey Dent/Two-Face for three Batman cartoons.
Moll had a shaved head — he did that to play the warrior Hurok in the sci-fi film Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983) — when he auditioned for the role of Shannon on Night Court, created by Reinhold Weege.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

According to our current combined predictions, Jodie Comer (“Prima Facie”) is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Play at this year’s Tony Awards with 12/5 odds. She already won an Olivier a couple of months ago for her work in the West End production. She would be the fifth Tony winner in this category for a one-woman performance.
In Suzie Miller‘s one-woman show, Comer plays Tessa, a barrister from working-class origins who must deal with an unexpected event that forces her to confront the patriarchal power and morality of the law.
When it comes to solo performances at the Tonys, four have prevailed in this category before. In 1977 Julie Harris won her fifth and final competitive accolade for her portrayal of Emily Dickinson in William Luce‘s “The Belle of Amherst.” In 1986 Lily Tomlin won for playing multiple characters in Jane Wagner‘s “The Search for Signs...

It took 42 years, but Mel Brooks is finally making good on a parody of a promise he never seemed likely to keep: Bringing “History of the World, Part II” to audiences far and wide. The filmmaker addresses that elephant in the room within the opening minutes of the new, eight-part Hulu series, admitting that he agreed to the project under two conditions — that there could be no repeat gags, and that he be made to look exactly like he did in the 1981 original film.
The show winks at both of those conditions by the end of the first episode, setting the tone for any unaware viewers that were expecting historical insight or veracity on world events.
In “Part II,” a now 96-year-old Brooks returns as writer and producer, but aside from the aforementioned intro, he doesn’t appear onscreen. Instead, he picks up narration duties from Orson Welles, a gig...

Nancy Meyers, co-writer and producer of the 1991 Father of the Bride movie starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, says late actress Cindy Williams inspired the remake.
In an Instagram post remembering the Laverne & Shirley star, who died last Wednesday at the age of 75, Meyers expressed her sadness over hearing of Williams’ death. And in a brief anecdote, the writer and producer of the film directed by ex-husband Charles Shyer revealed how the beloved TV icon helped make the ’90s romantic comedy a reality.

Celebrities, they are just like us. They eat, they go to the bathroom, they get into flamed Twitter wars over dumb Marvel comments, and they like disturbing, unsettling horror movies.
That's right, we're talking about Mr. Martin Scorsese, accidental front man in the "is Marvel cinema?" debate, Oscar-winner, and living legend. He has made stars of many actors, and has changed the filmmaking industry by delivering several masterpieces.
What some people may not know is that Scorsese is a pure-hearted, relentless cinephile. The man just loves his pictures, has a list of movies from around the world you need to see, has worked to restore classic movies, and has helped produce modern hits like "Uncut Gems," "Shirley," and more. Today, he wants to gush about another movie he loves, not an award winning, fancy-pants Cannes premiere, nor a prestige play adaptation, but the shocking, blood-filled, alligator-feeding, Mia Goth-starring "Pearl" by Ti West.

There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

Participant Media CEO David Linde has said he is “energized” by the number of production and distribution companies who are now committed to social change.
Spotlight, Judas and the Black Messiah and American Factory producer Participant was founded by Jeff Skoll in 2004 with a commitment to producing entertainment with socially relevant themes and Linde praised a range of major outfits for “doing what we do in a very specific way.”
He singled out Bron for co-producing Oscar nominee Judas and the Black Messiah, eOne for distributing Participant’s Dark Waters and helping bring a movie to the European Parliament that was “engaged in social change,” and Lionsgate for its work on Wonder and effective sequel White Bird: A Wonder Story.
“People are beginning to understand the value of engagement and that is what we are trying to do,” Linde told a Banff audience. “There are lots of people doing what...

Elisabeth Moss Addresses Scientology in Unusually Candid Interview, from Leah Remini to Emmys Speech
Actor, director, and producer Elisabeth Moss got atypically honest about her ties to the Church of Scientology in a recent profile for The New Yorker. That includes rumors about the “Mad Men” star and “Handmaid’s Tale” Emmy winner walking out on ex-Scientologist Leah Remini’s acceptance speech at the 2018 Television Critics Awards for her religion-dissenting program, “Scientology and the Aftermath.”
“I went to the bathroom,” Moss clarified over her absence. “I wish it was more exciting than that.”
“Scientology and the Aftermath” creator Remini claimed that the Church forbids Moss to speak to her because Remini is an “anti-social personality,” as The New Yorker reported.
Moss responded, “I have never been approached by her. I have never received any request to talk to her. So there hasn’t been an opportunity for her to say that. I don’t know her that well, so it’s not like we were friends.

The patriarchal bullshit of the world drives women crazy. This is as true today as it was in 1892, when feminist author Charlotte Perkins Gilman published her best-known work, short story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” It is the tale, told in the form of diary entries, of a woman descending into apparent psychotic madness after her doctor-husband prescribes a socially isolating, intellectually stultifying “rest cure” during a bout of what we would recognize today as postpartum depression. (Gilman based the story on her own experiences after giving birth.)
An incisive film adaptation of this groundbreaking story — one that captures the quiet horror of how the world has in the past and still today fails to acknowledge that women have inner lives that need nurturing — would be very welcome. This is not that movie. This is a stiflingly literal mounting of Gilman’s words that lacks any appreciation of both the wider cultural...

At this point, if anyone in Hollywood is selling a story that happens to center on a haunted, damaged, and obsessively driven woman, they sure as hell better be giving Elisabeth Moss a call. The supremely talented star of "Mad Men," "The Handmaid's Tale," "Her Smell," "The Invisible Man," and "Shirley" has all but cornered the market in playing these specific types of leads, going above and beyond to embody such rich characters with a fierce and unwavering sense of commitment. It's not really overselling things to state that the results, thus far, have...

Annapurna’s chief content officer Sue Naegle is stepping down from her post, Variety has confirmed.
The show business veteran had served as Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison’s top content executive for nearly six years, and helped buttress the indie company through the pandemic and other periods of great uncertainty. Naegle is said to be focusing on her forthcoming slate as a producer. Some of those projects were developed and will continue at Annapurna, including the anticipated Amy Adams-led adaptation of “Nightbitch” shooting this fall.
Insiders close to the company said that Naegle departs amicably and will not be replaced, and the current leadership structure will move to absorb her duties. This includes Annapurna president Nathan Gary, chief operating officer Chris Corabi, and creative executives including Christina Oh and Adam Paulsen in film and Ali Krug and Patrick Chu in television.
An Annapurna spokesperson did not immediately provide comment on the matter.
