At a key juncture in this sixth episode of the series, young Adija is promised by Georgia that she will be safe, if left in the hands of a relief center. But Adija's response of "Nobody's safe" is revealing about the journey into the heart of darkness depicted in "The Widow."
The program's title of "The Spider and the Web" likely refers to the central nexus of evil in the figure of Major General Azikiwe. Benson and Ariel have verified that his shrill voice is that of the mastermind of the bomb plot of the doomed airplane three years ago. Now, posing as a writer who is researching the history of aviation in the Congo, Benson meets Azikiwe in person.
Azikiwe's loyal minion Djamba was in league with Pieter Bello and took it upon himself to murder Judith. Once again, the motivation is greed with multiple factions vying for control of the rich coltan mines. The coltan is the equivalent of the ivory in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Now, Djamba kidnaps and murders Ariel, but leaves behind a trail of evidence. A final kind gesture of Ariel is to send a gift to Beatrix of a print of the painting "Whistler's Mother."
Benson and Georgia track Djamba down and confront him with Ariel's tape recording and video footage of him from the hotel. But the surprising admission of Djamba is that he knows the whereabouts of Will Mason. Moreover, Djamba even knows the whereabouts of Will, who is presently residing in a red house with white pillars in Ruhengeri in Rwanda, east of the Congo. After three long years, Georgia now hears Will's voice on Djamba's cell phone! The suspense is building towards the penultimate episode.
