In July of 2023, Netflix announced that not only had they axed their plans to adapt Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" property into a live-action film, but they were doing so after spending over $30 million in development. Fans had been looking forward to a human He-Man flick since it was first announced in 2007, but the development with Sony Pictures in 2022 seemed like a sure bet. Then it was scrapped, but the project's move to Netflix made sense considering the streamer is home to "He-Man & Masters of the Universe," "Masters of the Universe: Revelation," and "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power." Unfortunately, Netflix dropped the project, which had already cast actor/dancer Kyle Allen to play He-Man/Prince Adam, and Mattel was left looking for a new home for the film. According to a recent report from Variety, that home has been found with Amazon and Travis Knight has been announced as the director.

It's been nearly a decade since "Kung Fu Panda 3" hit theaters, but the paw-punching panda hasn't been dormant the entire time. Since the sequel's arrival in theaters, there have been two DreamWorks Animation Television shows ("Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny" and "Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight") following Po's adventures after what seemed like a nice trilogy capper. So it's not as if we've been short on martial arts mayhem. The latter series even managed to lure Jack Black back to voice Po, and it just wrapped up a three-season run in September 2023. So bringing "Kung Fu Panda" back to the big screen really needed to feel worth it. How did "Shrek Forever After" director Mike Mitchell and co-director Stephanie Ma Stine ("She-Ra and the Princesses of Power") fare with the latest mystical journey for Po?
The good news is that "Kung Fu Panda 4" (watch the...

Here we go again. Another year is starting, which means it's time for the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" movie to get yet another director. Like so many projects stuck in developing hell, it seems like practically every director currently working in Hollywood has, at some point, been involved in this film.
Now, Deadline reports that Travis Knight — the director of "Bumblebee" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," founder and CEO of Laika, and son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight — is the latest name to be attached to the long-in-development "Masters of the Universe" movie from Mattel. The report specifically says he is in "final negotiations" to direct, yet the deal hasn't closed just yet as other elements of the film are still being figured out. Nevertheless, this is exciting news, and brings the project one step closer to actually getting made.

If you're anything like me, you caught the first "Kung Fu Panda" way back in 2008, thought it was a cute and harmless way to spend 90 minutes, and only ever thought about it again whenever it played on FX. But in the 15 years since, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks have pumped out two more big-screen sequels, three TV shows, four shorts, and even a holiday-themed TV special that, for all I know, have probably been the obsession of countless children over the years. In fairness, the idea of a kung-fu fighting panda is absolute IP gold, so I get it!
All this to say that, despite the overwhelming success of the movies, we actually haven't returned to the world of anthropomorphic, martial arts expert animals since "Kung Fu Panda 3" in 2016. That's probably because the threequel ended up as the lowest-grossing movie of the series, despite positive reviews and the fact that...

Sometimes in order to do a lot of bad, you have to do a little good. That’s the premise behind “The Bad Guys” upcoming holiday special, “The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday.” The 22-minute installment will land on Netflix November 30.
Set prior to the events of the 2022 movie, the special follows the Bad Guys just ahead of their favorite day of the year: Christmas morning. While everyone’s opening presents, it’s the perfect time for a city-wide holiday heist. But that can’t happen when Christmas is unexpectedly cancelled. Faced with the possibility of potentially not committing mass crimes, this crew of baddies has to do the unthinkable and save Christmas by becoming stand-in Santas.
“Let’s go do some good so we can be bad,” Wolf (Michael Godere) says in the trailer.

New Delhi, July 19 (Ians) ‘The Masters of the Universe’ live action movie, based on the popular He-Man franchise from the popular Mattel toys series, has officially been shelved, with Mattel confirming that they are looking for other partners.
Initially meant to be a Netflix adaptation, according to Variety, close to $30 million has already been spent on development costs and the cash that’s been shelled out for casting, production and direction. Some sources estimate that the total costs for development were in fact twice that figure.
Pre-production on the ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie was well underway, but its massive budget of over $200 million which seemed to be increasing gradually became a big issue. The movie’s scheduled directors, Adam and Aaron Nee (‘The Lost City’) worked with producers to try to bring down the costs, and even considered shooting the movie back-to-back with a sequel in order to amortise the cost,...

In an unexpected turn in the streaming sector, Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly discussing the possibility of licensing some of its original HBO content to competitor Netflix. The strategy diverges from the industry’s recent streaming strategy of hoarding content for their own direct-to-consumer services.
It’s not the first time HBO has explored syndication, with “Curb Your Enthusiasm” airing on TV Guide Network and “Entourage” on Spike. And from 2014 to 2018, HBO licensed shows to Amazon’s Prime Video. Still, it’s been years since an HBO original was available on a service not owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
The roster of HBO shows potentially heading to Netflix remains undisclosed, but according to recent reports, it includes high-profile titles such as “Insecure.” Until an actual deal is struck, we can only speculate on the HBO shows that align well with Netflix’s content catalog. Data from Parrot Analytics — which takes into account consumer research,...

When Nd Stevenson, co-producer of Nimona, discusses the fiery titular character of Netflix’s upcoming animated film, he uses descriptors rare for a lead: angry, punky, chubby, weird, off-putting. “She’s this teen girl who wants to murder people,” he says of the charmingly chaotic shape-shifter, aspiring villain and self-dubbed sidekick.
She also happens to be his avatar and alter-ego. Releasing June 30 on Netflix, Nimona is an animated feature based on Stevenson’s popular webcomic-turned-graphic novel, which garnered an Eisner Award and a National Book Award nomination. Onscreen, the story follows a feared shape-shifter (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz) after she comes to the aid of Lord Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight accused of a crime.
For Stevenson, Nimona is a “power fantasy,” but one who is equally wounded and scared, desperate to be seen, held and loved. “She is a character with a lot of pain and anger at her heart,...

Just four weeks ago, the Netflix streaming service unveiled a teaser trailer for the animated adventure film Nimona – and since we’re a little over two weeks from the film’s June 30th release date, it makes sense that a full trailer for the movie has now arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Nimona had a bumpy ride on its way to Netflix. The project was scrapped by Blue Sky Studios when it was near completion, then canceled by Fox… but by the end of this month, it will finally be out in the world.
Inspired by Nd Stevenson‘s (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) webcomic-turned-graphic novel, Nimona was directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor. Well, I’ll be damned! After being scrapped by Blue Sky Studios when it was near completion, then canceled by Fox, and resurrected by Netflix, Nimona is taking a victory lap with today’s Nimona teaser trailer! Inspired by Nd Stevenson‘s (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) webcomic-turned-graphic novel, the story of Nimona unfolds in a colorful techno-future where Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic, medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem. Oh, and did I mention Nimona is a shape-shifter?
With the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters blur, the unlikely duo set out to wreak...

It's been nearly two years since "My Adventures With Superman," an animated collaboration between HBO Max and Cartoon Network was announced alongside a new, noir-inspired "Batman" animated series from J.J. Abrams and "The Batman" director Matt Reeves.
Starring Jack Quaid as Clark Kent/Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen, "My Adventures With Superman" was pitched as a show centered on the trio of friends as twenty-somethings interning for the Daily Planet, and finding themselves as individuals along the way. With its familiar, cutesy aesthetics, it was stacked up to be a promising, family-friendly series to add to the animated catalog on HBO Max.
Public coverage on the show has been suspiciously quiet since its initial announcement — and due to a tyrannical purge of Cartoon Network shows on the HBO Max platform last year thanks to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, it seemed there was...

Did Christoph Waltz freak you out in "Inglorious Basterds?" He has the creepy smile thing absolutely mastered, and we're about to see it again in the upcoming Prime Video series, "The Consultant." In the show, Waltz plays Regus Patoff, a consultant who comes into a huge mobile video game company called CompWare after the CEO shoots himself. He's not exactly a comforting presence, sniffing employees to decide if they stay at the company and trimming his nose hairs in the office. I apologize if you were eating when you read that.
The earlier trailer was upsetting enough, but this one is even more unnerving. The show was created by Tony Basgallop and is directed by Matt Shakman. Shakman's style is all over this trailer, which feels at points as though you're supposed to laugh when things are looking rather murder-y. It's like the camera has very good comic timing yet...

It's officially 2023, which means we all made it around the sun again, and that's a victory in our book. That also means it's time to run through the films we're looking forward to the most over the next 12 months, starting with "Plane." Fine, that one didn't make the cut here, but it's not like you need us to tell you why you ought to be excited for the latest offering from Trash Cinema King™ Gerard Butler.
Per our annual tradition, the /Film staff has narrowed down the huge list of movies set to arrive in 2023 to our 25 most anticipated picks... and as is likewise customary for us, our "top 25" list is actually a "top 30" list because there are far too many promising movies on the horizon to limit ourselves to 25 choices. Keep in mind, these are the films we're aware of right now. Every year brings surprises that blow us away.

If 2022 and the preceding years haven't been dystopian enough for you, Prime Video has just the thing to fill you with dread. Today, the streaming service released a new teaser trailer for "The Consultant," a series based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Bentley Little. The show was created by Tony Basgallop and directed by Matt Shakman.
In the teaser, we meet the very creepy Mr. Patoff, played by Christoph Waltz ("Inglorious Basterds"), who has been hired as a consultant when a gaming company called CompWare begins to decline. He's an interesting guy -- very meticulous, clipping his nose hairs in the office and generally freaking everyone out. The company employees begin to suspect that he's more sinister than even that nose hair thing makes him seem. In fact, stray nose hairs are the least of these people's worries.

Searchlight Pictures gave their darkly comedic psychological thriller The Menu a theatrical release last month (you can read our review Here and watch our interview with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult Here), and it has been more successful than I would have expected it to be. It has earned more than 59 million at the worldwide box office. And next month, it’s heading into viewers’ homes. Scripted by Will Tracy (Last Week with John Oliver) and Seth Reiss (Late Night with Seth Meyers), The Menu is set

Vella Lovell will star opposite Joel McHale in the upcoming Fox comedy series “Animal Control.”
The single-camera series was originally ordered at Fox in June, with McHale joining the show in mid-October.
The show is described as “a workplace comedy following a group of Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not.”
Lovell will star as Emily. Per her official character description, she is “the sweet-natured and endearingly awkward boss of the Animal Control precinct. She may be in over her head at the job, but she’s beloved by her team.” That will be in contrast to McHale’s character, Frank, who is said to be a “cynical and curmudgeonly” ex-cop who was fired after trying to expose corruption in his department.

After Disney shut down Blue Sky Studios in 2021, it seemed all hope was lost for the highly anticipated animated feature “Nimona,” based on indie darling comic series from creator Nd Stevenson’s comics of the same name. Finally, some good news. "Nimona," the animated movie from "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" creator Nd Stevenson is finally going to see the light of day, following Disney's shut down of animation studio Blue Sky.
The news comes as a big victory for animation, as production on the film was unceremoniously shut down and then canceled halfway through, with only 10 months of production left. The story follows a young shape-shifter in a techno-medieval world, and tackles themes of queerness and identity. With Good-Hearted ‘Back to the Outback,’ Netflix Continues to Compete Mightily in the Animated Arena
As kids, we are taught to never judge a book by its cover, but what about judging a crustacean by its shell? Jumping on the bandwagon of kids’ adventure films, Netflix’s animated romp “Back to the Outback” packs a lot of jokes into its warm and fuzzy message, though its characters are more scaly than cuddly. The film is the latest entry in Netflix’s growing slate of animated, kid-centric fare, clearly designed to compete with animation giants Pixar, Disney, and Dreamworks. And the streaming giant isn’t making a crazy bet, as its hopes to capitalize on the lucrative sphere are proving more than possible: the film is another charming entry in yet another segment of potential Netflix dominance.

This article contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation part 2.
The end of Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2 dropped a huge bomb on the audience. Skeletor was overpowered by none other than someone seemingly working for Hordak, the main villain of the original 1985 She-Ra series. It blew open the doors of the world of MoTU: Revelation and made it seem like elements of She-Ra could be a major part of any potential second season. However, MoTU: Revelation executive producer Kevin Smith tells us that isn’t for certain.
“The only thing that I’ve been told over and over again is the properties are owned by two different companies,” Smith says. “Masters of the Universe is owned by Mattel. The She-Ra figures are owned by Mattel but (animated) She-Ra is owned by DreamWorks.”
Running from 2018 to 2020, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power was released on Netflix and produced by DreamWorks.
The end of Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2 dropped a huge bomb on the audience. Skeletor was overpowered by none other than someone seemingly working for Hordak, the main villain of the original 1985 She-Ra series. The Romans are headed by the insanely talented, but tough as nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon). Along with her beloved husband Albie (Adkins), Dottie has created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

Amazon Studios is developing She-Ra as a live-action series based on the characters from Mattel’s Masters of the Universe franchise, Deadline has confirmed.
DreamWorks Animation, which produced the recent She-Ra: Princess of Power animated series reboot for Netflix, is executive producing.
The new She-Ra series is in early development, and a writer is not yet attached. It will be a standalone story, unconnected to the previous animated series.
She-Ra: Princess of Power originated an 1985 animated series, a collaboration between Filmation and Mattel and spinoff of Filmation’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. It follows the adventures of Princess Adora, Prince Adam/He-Man’s twin sister, who leads the Great Rebellion in the fight to free Etheria from the tyrannical rule of Hordak and the Evil Horde.

A She-Ra live-action series is in early development at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.
As the project is in the very early stages, no writer is currently attached. DreamWorks Animation will serve as an executive producer after recently producing the Netflix animated series “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” However, the live-action version will be a new, standalone story and will not be connected to the animated show.
Should the project go to series, it would mark the first live-action adaptation of the She-Ra character. She first debuted onscreen in the animated film ” He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword” in 1985 as part of the “Masters of the Universe” franchise before spinning off into her own cartoon series, “She-Ra: Princess of Power.”
In the original animated series, She-Ra’s real name is Princess Adora, the long lost twin sister of Prince Adam, a.k.a He-Man. She was kidnapped...

Premiering in 2018, Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a reimagining of the classic ‘80s She-Ra series, which itself was a spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Using She-Ra’s original ideas and concepts as a springboard, the team behind it updated everything for modern audiences. A deeper story, character designs with tons of variety, and especially more diversity is woven in the series.
This and so much more won the show an army of fans, many of whom were brand new to the wider Masters of the Universe (Motu) franchise. This set the standard for what Motu was for them and the series they’d use to judge all other entries by. With Masters of the Universe: Revelation about to hit Netflix, many She-Ra fans might be wondering if this series is something they’ll enjoy.
What might be helpful to know is the primary difference between the two.

DreamWorks Animation comes to the Annecy Animation Festival again on a wave of success: last spring, despite the pandemic and theater closures, “Trolls World Tour” hit a limited number of venues but really hit big on-demand, while “Croods: A New Age” reaped pent-up demand at theaters in the fall and winter as venues opened around the world. Its TV animation unit boasts buzzy hits such as “Trollhunters,” “Tales of Arcadia: Wizards” and “3Below: Tales of Arcadia” from Guillermo del Toro, “Voltron Legendary Defender,” “She-Ra,” “Spirit Riding Free” as well as spinoffs from “Madagascar,” “Fast and Furious,” “Kung Fu Panda” and ‘How to Train Your Dragon.”

Jordan Fisher has joined the cast of The CW’s “The Flash” in the recurring guest star role of Bart Allen, aka Impulse.
Fisher’s first appearance will be in the series’ 150th episode, which is the 17th episode of Season 7 of the long-running DC superhero drama.
As fans of “The Flash” already know, Bart is the future son of Barry aka the Flash (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) and is said to be “the fastest teenager on the planet.” However, due to his penchant for “wildly impulsive behavior,” Barry and Iris will have their hands full trying to teach him patience — which will be a necessity if they want to succeed, not only as a family unit, but also in stopping the biggest threat to the Flash yet.
Fisher is an actor, producer, musician and dancer who has credits that span screens big and small, and the Broadway stage.

Bollywood film makers may not have to go as far as Rajasthan or Dubai for shooting on desert sites. Welcome to Uran across Mumbai harbour!
Lush green mangrove zones have now been turned into massive deserts and sprawling wetlands into barren lands at several places providing ideal shooting locations, environmentalists have said in a tongue-in-cheek letter to Imppa (Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association).
“With none of the concerned authorities remaining unconcerned over the relentless destruction of the fragile biodiversity, Bollywood producers might as well make use of the man-made deserts and barren lands for their shoots,” said B N Kumar, director of NatConnect Foundation.
“This is no exaggeration as innumerable complaints to the government and the orders from the environment department and even the high court appointed wetlands and mangroves committees have not yielded any results to save nature in Uran,” he regretted.

GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, has released its annual Where We Are On TV report, finding largely positive numbers that stem from just four showrunners. Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Lena Waithe and Greg Berlanti were responsible for one in every five LGBTQ characters on TV.
The study found that 9.1% of series regular characters on scripted primetime television this season are LGBTQ, a slight decrease from last year’s record high. For the first time, the report found that over half of LGBTQ characters on cable are people of color. While the steady numbers may look good from the outside, the fact that four powerhouse creators did the lion’s share of the work shows how tenuous such milestones are.
This marks the 25th year that GLAAD has tracked the presence of LGBTQ characters on television, and the 16th edition of the Where We Are on TV study.

Reboots aren’t just for grown-ups anymore.
The proliferation of streaming platforms reliant on free-flowing programming pipelines has led to the development of new versions of shows such as “Battlestar Galactica” and “True Blood” that last aired when Barack Obama was president. That same industry-shaking shift away from linear and toward streaming, coupled with the emergence of nostalgia and geekdom as dominating cultural forces, has turned kids TV — already accustomed to regularly reimagining corporate-controlled IP — into a hotbed of reboots.
“We’re in an interesting time right now, where, probably more so than ever before, adults who grew up with certain properties are able to still be a part of those fandoms and talk about them and participate in those fandoms very actively,” says Noelle Stevenson, creator of the DreamWorks Animation-produced “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” for Netflix. “In the past, it was maybe a little bit more of a niche thing.

The comic follows friends Ripley, Molly, April, Jo, and Mal, attendees of the Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. They discover that there’s more to their camp than meets the eye, and spend the rest of their summer discovering secrets about their camp, the area around it, and building he kind of durable, long-lasting friendships that come from solving life threatening mysteries together. Just like regular camp.
We kid, but Lumberjanes is genuinely terrific. It’s ceaselessly fun, whip smart, with almost universally great storytelling in the art.
