The question of whether multi-camera sitcoms are a dying breed isn’t a new one. The few remaining purveyors of the format, including “The Big Bang Theory” executive producer Chuck Lorre, have been asked that question for years.
But even as Lorre ventures into the single-camera world with such shows as the Golden Globe-winning “The Kominsky Method” and has gotten a taste of success in that arena, he’s not turning his back on multicam.
Lorre, along with Al Higgins, Eddie Gorodetsky and Gina Yashere, is behind “Bob Hearts Abishola,” a new multicam sitcom for CBS this fall that aims to balance laughs — yes, the studio audience is there, chuckling along — with the serious subject of immigration and tolerance.
Whether or not “Bob Hearts Abishola” will be awards fodder remains to be seen — there’s a fart joke within the first five minutes of the pilot, after all — but it...

With the end of Fox’s series Empire, a hit show with African American audiences, network CEO Charlie Collier was asked about future plans to greenlight shows that speak to underrepresented audiences.
“It’s remarkable when you look at Fox and go back to the early days of In Living Color, as you know what is going to be a tremendous finale season of Empire, Fox not only had the most diverse audience for a broadcast network but has also done some remarkable things in front of and behind the camera,” said Collier.
“We talk diversity, not just race and gender, but diversity of thought and the risk that we’re willing to take, the choices that these amazing artists are making to tell stories that really make a difference,” he continued. “Not only are we committed to it but we talk about how to approach it all the time.

Lee Daniels’ Fox music drama “Empire” will be entering its sixth and final season later this year. The broadcast network announced in May the final season for one of its flagship series, but “Empire” was hardly the only Fox series featuring black leads that got the plug pulled. Nearly every Fox series with a black lead got canceled, including Daniels’ “Star,” the Damon Wayans-led “Lethal Weapon,” Lil’ Rel Howery’s “Rel,” the Russell Hornsby-starring drama “Proven Innocent,” and the David Alan Grier comedy “The Cool Kids.” Daniels recently told Vulture he’s troubled by what all the cancellations have in common.
“Clearly, there’s obvious stuff going on,” Daniels said when asked about Fox dropping the ax on its original series with black leads. “I think it’s very obvious. I was disturbed by it. But I don’t think ‘Empire’ had anything to do with [a possible whitewashing of the network]. ‘Empire’ sort of...

ABC has formally ordered a pilot for the comedy series based on the life of comedian Nate Bargatze, Variety has learned.
The untitled multi-cam project was originally set up with a put pilot commitment at Fox before moving to ABC last year. Bargatze will star in the series in addition to writing and executive producing. The project will be in contention for a potential midseason pickup.
The series follows Nate and his wife, who choose to move from California to Nate’s native Tennessee, where his parents still live, to raise their six-year-old daughter. They find the pursuit of a simple life to be much more complicated than they imagined.
Jerrod Carmichael will co-write and executive produce along with Bargatze. Ari Katcher and Dan Shaki will also write and co-executive produce. Danielle Sanchez-Witzel will executive produce and serve as showrunner. Tim Sarkes and Alex Murray of Brillstein Entertainment Partners will executive produce.

Fox has ordered one more pilot to series, the Kim Cattrall-led southern Gothic dramedy “Filthy Rich.”
Written and directed by “The Help” filmmaker Tate Taylor, the show is a family drama in “which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results.”
Here’s the logline for “Filthy Rich”: When the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network, dies in a plane crash, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune. With monumental twists and turns, “Filthy Rich” presents a world in which everyone has an ulterior motive – and no one is going down without a fight.

Lethal Weapon is canceled.
There will be no fourth season to the Fox drama.
Rebooting the already rebooted franchise after the Clane Crawford debacle was always a big bet.
After Crawford got canned as a result of still wholly unknown drama behind the scenes and between him and series star, Damon Wayans, many expected the show to get canceled after 13 episodes.
Renewal Scorecard 2018-19
Seann William Scott, always a fan favorite, entered the show at the most unflattering time possible but made a great showing as a new character named Cole.
Things must have perked up for Wayans upon his arrival, too, because he signed on for an additional three episodes despite earlier saying he would be done with the show for good after 13.
That's most unfortunate for the remaining fans of the action-packed drama, however, as the Lethal Weapon Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger.

The New Fox is ramping up for the 2019-2020 season with six new series pick ups.
The broadcaster handed out orders for four dramas — “Deputy,” “Prodigal Son,” “neXt,” and the untitled Annie Weisman/Jason Katims project — as well as two comedies. One of the comedies is the animated series “The Great North” and the second is the multi-cam “Outmatched,” formerly known as “Geniuses.” These orders join the previously announced straight-to-series orders for the animated comedies “Duncanville” and “Bless the Harts” at Fox.
Each of the newly announced pick ups is a co-production with Fox Entertainment (formerly Fox Broadcasting). The move will allow Fox to maintain a stake in the shows despite not having a vertically-integrated studio like they did before the 21st Century Fox-Disney merger that saw 20th Century Fox Television move under the Disney umbrella. Both “Duncanville” and “Bless the Harts” are co-productions as well. “Duncanville” is produced by Universal Television,...

The show, which Fox revived this season after it was canceled in 2017 by ABC after six seasons, airs on Friday nights. But with Fox getting the rights to the WWE’s “Smackdown Live” next fall, which is slated for Fridays, “Last Man Standing” needs a new time slot.
Fox will air the pro wrestling show beginning on Oct. 4.

Ahead of its milestone 150th episode Friday, Fox has renewed its flagship comedy Last Man Standing starring Tim Allen for the 2019-2020 season. This will be the series’ second season on Fox and eighth overall.
The renewal of Last Man’s Standing was never in doubt given its strong ratings performance in its first season on Fox, which picked up the series a year after it was canceled by ABC. Despite airing on the lower-trafficked Friday night, Last Man Standing ranks as Fox’s second most watched and third highest-rated scripted series this season in Live+7.
Last Man Standing, which comes from former Fox sister studio 20th Century Fox TV, now part of Disney, will have to leave its long-time Friday home next fall when WWE’s SmackDown Live takes over the night. There are some big changes coming to Fox as it heads into its first full season as an independent TV station.
The network has canceled The Gifted after two low-rated seasons, Variety is reporting.
The Gifted starred Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker as parents who learn that their children have mutant abilities.
As such, they go on the run and find themselves joining a network of superheroes who are also in hiding.

Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White, Sean Teale, Coby Bell, Jamie Chung, Blair Redford, and Emma Dumont were also part of the show's expansive cast.
The Gifted Season 2 got off to a sluggish start in the ratings last fall. When it wrapped earlier this year, it averaged a mere 2 million total viewers and a 0.6 rating.
These numbers presented declines of over 40 percent year-to-year in both metrics, proving that the series was losing steam.

The Simpsons veteran Mike Scully tweeted up a storm on Sunday in support of the WGA membership’s vote this week on a new Agency Code of Conduct that would ban packaging fees and force talent agencies to sever their ties with affiliated production companies. The WGA and the Association of Talent Agents will return to the bargaining table tomorrow in an attempt to work out a deal for a new franchise agreement in advance of the April 6 deadline.
