As Hollywood sees light at the end of the tunnel, actors at the pickets lines shared their reflections from the hot labor summer and how they plan to move forward in the next three years.
“I was on the last one in 2007, walked the lines, and the difference is we have more women and more people of color on the line, but also the camaraderie has kept people coming out and saying, ‘Ok, we are standing strong this time here,'” stage, film, television and voice actress, Jennifer Leigh Warren (“Rent: Live”) told TheWrap on Tuesday in front of one of Netflix’s Hollywood buildings.
It’s been more than 140 days since the actors’ and writers’ strikes shut down Hollywood following failed negotiations with the AMPTP. Since then, thousands of SAG-AFTRA and WGA members have taken to the picket lines in hopes of putting an end to issues like low...

For audience members checking in at the final dress rehearsal of NBC’s “Annie Live!” on Dec. 1, there was an additional stop along the usual security gauntlet. Between the airport-style metal detectors and the Yondr phone sequestration, everyone was required to show ID and proof of vaccination and was given a color-coordinated mask to wear throughout the show.
Producing a live musical for television is always a massively intricate endeavor, and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic added yet another layer of complexity. Every time the army of black-clad crew members swarmed the stage during the rehearsal’s commercial breaks, their masks were a constant reminder of the safety procedures to which the entire cast and crew had adhered for the many weeks that the live event has been in production.
“We’re observing all these protocols and being very, very careful,” said Robert Greenblatt, the former NBC exec who is producing “Annie Live!” “In rehearsals,...

I’m sure when you first heard that TikTok was entering the Emmy race, you wondered, “Wait — is that guy drinking Ocean Spray cranberry juice while skating down the highway and grooving to Fleetwood Mac even eligible?” Well, no. But viral hit “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” has been given the green light to submit, and now TikTok is aiming to join YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat and other social media outlets that have entered the awards competition once just reserved for good ol’ fashioned television.
“Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” began life as a video by user Emily Jacobsen, who performed an ode to Remy the rat from the animated Disney film. Soon, other TikTok users joined in — most notably, Daniel Mertzlufft, who gave Jacobson’s song the full Alan Menken treatment, complete with orchestra score and 20 vocalists. The Wanderer, a musical based on the life and music of rock & roll pioneer Dion, will stage its world premiere pre-Broadway run next Spring at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. Michael Wartella (Wicked) will take on the title role, with Christy Altomare (Broadway’s Anastasia) as wife Susan and former New Kid on the Block Joey McIntyre playing pal Johnny.
The musical, in development for years, will begin performances at the Paper Mill on March 24, 2022 and play through April 24, 2022. The engagement is described by producer Jill Menza as “the next step for our show on its way to Broadway…”
“If you told me as a young man that one day my journey from The Bronx to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame would become a musical, I would not have believed you,” said Dion in a statement. “It’s only 12 miles from Belmont Avenue to Broadway. It shouldn’t have taken this long!

NBC is getting a New Deal for Christmas, as it gets back into the live TV musical business with “Annie Live!” Set to air during the holidays, “Annie” also represents a homecoming of sorts for producers Bob Greenblatt and Neil Meron.
Greenblatt, of course, is the former NBC Entertainment chairman who found success in bringing live musicals to the network, starting with “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2013. Meron and the late Craig Zadan were the producers behind that special, which was a tremendous hit — averaging 21.8 million viewers in live+3 ratings. It spawned follow-up events including “Peter Pan Live!” in 2014, “The Wiz Live!” in 2015, “Hairspray Live!” in 2016 and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” on Easter in 2018.
“Annie Live!” landed at NBC after being shopped to all four major broadcast networks. “NBC is where we started these live musicals and I still have so much affection for it,” Greenblatt said.

Big news for The Flash‘s Barry and Iris: It’s a boy!
TVLine has learned that Jordan Fisher (To All the Boys 2, Grease Live!) has been cast in the recurring guest star role of Bart Allen, “the fastest teenager on the planet”… and Barry and Iris’ future son. This marks a departure from DC comics lore, where Bart is the son of Tornado Twin Don Allen (via Meloni Thawne) and thus is WestAllen’s grandkid.

Jordan Fisher has joined the cast of The CW’s “The Flash” in the recurring guest star role of Bart Allen, aka Impulse.
Fisher’s first appearance will be in the series’ 150th episode, which is the 17th episode of Season 7 of the long-running DC superhero drama.
As fans of “The Flash” already know, Bart is the future son of Barry aka the Flash (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) and is said to be “the fastest teenager on the planet.” However, due to his penchant for “wildly impulsive behavior,” Barry and Iris will have their hands full trying to teach him patience — which will be a necessity if they want to succeed, not only as a family unit, but also in stopping the biggest threat to the Flash yet.
Fisher is an actor, producer, musician and dancer who has credits that span screens big and small, and the Broadway stage.

For a minute there, it seemed as though the live TV musical had fallen out of favor once again. Beginning with NBC's 2013 production of The Sound of Music Live!, we found ourselves in the midst of a minor craze as the networks gathered A-list casts to mount annual specials, bringing some of Broadway's most beloved musicals to life on the small screen. But after a 2019 that saw Fox have to rely on Rent: Live's taped dress rehearsal footage while ABC's The Little Mermaid Live! made us wonder whether they really understood the assignment or not, it felt like a good time to press pause for a bit. Of course, that all changes on Wednesday, Dec. 9, as NBC revives the...

Production designer Jason Sherwood was responsible for the elegant, swirling design of the 2020 Oscars, and he just received an Emmy nomination for his work. The nomination comes a year after winning an Emmy for his design on “Rent: Live,” and he was hired mere months later to design the Oscars. “They wanted the show to visually feel different than it had in years before while still maintaining the polish and the integrity and the elegance of Hollywood’s most glamorous night,” says Sherwood in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “I really wanted to explore what it would feel like if the moving images of the movies were exploded from a normal movie screen and turned into something that felt more representative of the way that they were.” Watch the exclusive interview with Sherwood above.

We know it's been a hot second since To All the Boys I've Loved Before first dropped on Netflix, so it's understandable if you forgot that John Ambrose McClaren in the first movie was a completely different actor from the one in the sequel. In To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, the role was played by Jordan Fisher instead of Jordan Burtchett, who was in the first film. Were the filmmakers hoping we'd just forgotten that John Ambrose showed up at Lara Jean's (Lana Condor) door with her long-lost love letter at the end of the first movie? And that we wouldn't notice that these Jordans are two very different people?
The Tatbilb filmmakers never specifically said why they chose to recast the role, and Burtchett hasn't said much on the topic either. He shared his gratitude for his fans in a lengthy Instagram post after the recasting news last year,...

Karamo Brown and Bobby Berk Praise ‘Queer Eye’ Co-Star Jonathan Van Ness for Revealing HIV Diagnosis
“Queer Eye” stars Karamo Brown and Bobby Berk were among the many who came out to support Saturday night’s Hearts of Gold concert at the Greek Theater, a celebration the 50th anniversary of the Los Angeles Lgbt Center.
But the topic inevitably turned to their costar Jonathan Van Ness, who came out as HIV+ and a survivor of sexual abuse earlier in the day in an interview with The New York Times.
“We’ve been there supporting him around this decision that he had to make,” Berk told Variety. “We’re just so happy that he feels supported today. It’s been a positive thing. People are having a good reaction to it. And that’s all that we can hope for — that he’s happy and feels supported.”
Brown drew a connection between Van Ness and the Lgbt Center. “As Bobby talked about: Jonathan is doing exactly what the center does,...

The 2004 romantic comedy 13 Going On 30 became an instant classic as soon as it came out. It’s still a funny and sweet movie that I love to watch 15 years later, and it’s apparently still a moneymaker with life left to take it to the stage and screen. Deadline reported three years ago that the film was going to be made into a Broadway musical. The treatment has worked well for the film turned Broadway show Legally Blonde, and 13 Going On 30 has a similar feel-good formula that would translate well to the stage.
The film and Broadway producer, Vince Totino, executive producer of Fox’s Emmy-nominated Rent: Live, said that once the story of 13 Going On 30 hits the stage, he would love to give audiences a live showing on Fox. Here’s what Totino had to say about the project:

As Deadline first reported in 2016, 13 Going On 30 producer Revolution Studios has been working on turning the 2004 romantic comedy feature starring Jennifer Garner into a Broadway musical.
Today on the Red Carpet at the Creative Arts Emmys, Revolution Studios Chief Executive Officer Vince Totino, executive producer of Fox’s Emmy-nominated Rent: Live, which Revolution co-produced, said he’d like to see 13 Going on 30 become the next live musical on TV after its stage production.
“Revolution has really large library of pictures, and we’re always looking for things to develop for a sequel (or) derivative projects,” Totino told Deadline. “13 Going on 30 is a fantastic movie that people loved and are still reacting to today… First it has to make the stage and theater, and once that occurs, who knows? It could come back as a live show. I would love for that to happen.”

A 30-year-old production designer hailing from the world of New York theater, Jason Sherwood entered the world of television just last year, and has already racked up his first Emmy nomination, for his contributions to Rent: Live.
Interning for Derek McLane—the production designer behind The Sound of Music Live!—at a time when the live TV musical format was just beginning to making a resurgence, Sherwood was “obsessed with the idea that a musical was going to be given a mainstream platform in that way,” he told Deadline recently. Since Fox has yet to announce a host for the upcoming Emmy Awards, let’s all help them come up with some options. Networks usually choose in-house stars from their own shows to emcee TV’s biggest night, such as NBC hiring Michael Che and Colin Jost (“Saturday Night Live”) last year, CBS tapping Stephen Colbert (“Late Show”) in 2017 and ABC utilizing Jimmy Kimmel (“Jimmy Kimmel Live”) in 2016. The last time Fox produced these awards in 2015, the network went with “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Andy Samberg. That comedy has since left the network for NBC, so it’s unlikely he’ll be asked to return as Emmys ringleader this time around.
Below, take a look at some of our possibilities (with many hailing from Fox) and then vote for your favorite choice as 2019 Emmys host in our poll. If you don’t see your dream host listed, be sure to name them in the comments section.

First Rachel McAdams was a bird, and now so is Vanessa Hudgens. The Princess Switch actress will reportedly lead a staged reading of the musical adaptation of The Notebook, playing Southern heiress Allie Hamilton (McAdams originated the role in the 2004 romance film). The new musical, which is a collaboration between Ingrid Michaelson and Bekah Brunstetter, will hold the reading for Vassar and New York Stage & Film's Powerhouse Season this Summer, though nothing about whether or not Hudgens will actually end up playing Allie on Broadway has been announced.
Joining Hudgens are Tony nominee and Broadway star Hailey Kilgore (Once on This Island) as young Allie, and Cabaret's Andy Buckley as old Allie. As for Noah, who was originated in the film by Ryan Gosling, Carmen Jones star Clifton Duncan will play opposite Hudgens, with Jagged Little Pill's Antonio Cipriano and Tony winner James Naughton as young and old Noah, respectively.

“I am a ‘heart creature’ myself,” reveals production designer Jason Sherwood. “I like to have a personal connection to something” he says of the projects he chooses, “to find an empathetic bridge between me and the piece.” Sherwood chatted with Gold Derby about the connection he had with “Rent” and how it inspired his impressive production design for Fox’s “Rent: Live.” Watch the full video interview above.
Sherwood’s first experience with the iconic musical came as a teenager, sitting in a first row student rush seat at the Nederlander Theatre. He calls it a “formative” and unforgettable experience. “I became obsessed,” admits Vanessa Hudgens of her love for “Rent.” After performing in the show at a Hollywood Bowl performance in 2010, she “fell in love with the community and family” that the show inspires. The sequel to Netflix’s “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” has made some significant changes behind the scenes from the first movie, but switching out one of Lara Jean’s love interests has caused quite an uproar. Talented actor, dancer, and singer Jordan Fisher has been cast as the charming John Ambrose, a move that has created mixed feelings for fans.
In the first film, Lara Jean Covey’s (Lana Condor) childhood love letters that she had no intention of mailing get leaked to her five crushes during her junior year in high school. She eventually ends up dating one of the boys, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), but during the end credits, John Ambrose (Jordan Burtchett) shows up on her doorstep with one of the incriminating letters.
Fisher’s casting is a surprise for fans who had expected Burtchett to reprise his role as John Ambrose, a potential rival for Peter.
