Better second time around watching !
NatashaJAmos201520 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have no clue why these so called X-Files fans are rating the episodes of his excellent season so low!!

This episode is better the second time around watching. We get a little bit of Scullys history -why she became religious. And Mulder gets new glasses because he's getting older. There's really nothing not to like about it.

"Shame to waste a good pancreas."
classicsoncall6 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably not the most gruesome or grotesque 'X-Files', I think you'd have to go back to Season Four with 'Home' as the all time champ. That year also had 'Sanguinarium' for those who go for the gore, while this story also throws in a little bit of vampirism that we saw in Season Five's 'Bad Blood'. This show will make the faint of heart squirm a bit, beginning with that pancreas lick that will turn your stomach. Even with all the disgusting body part references, the episode takes a turn for the absurd when Barbara Beaumont (Fiona Vroom) offers her rendition of 'There's Got to be a Morning After'. The episode list for 'The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour' for 1973 isn't complete here on IMDb, but if I had to bet, I'm pretty sure she wasn't on it. (Just kidding on that one, I was paying attention to the story).

With just one more show left in the season, Scully and Mulder get somewhat philosophical at the finale, attempting to address X-Files fans' biggest question mark voiced by Mulder - "I've always wondered how this was gonna end". Like most, I think it's probably a good idea to bring the series to a conclusion, whether Scully and Mulder finally get together or not. Their relationship, for the most part entirely professional and on the up and up, tends to get angst ridden when they begin to unveil their innermost thoughts. There was a time way back when the show ran consecutive seasons I would have welcomed the idea but there seems something almost tragic about their relationship now that begs for some level of contentment and satisfaction. I guess we'll find out in short order.

What happened to Olivia?
karosenberger17 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Episode wasn't any more gory than any vampire or other horror movie. What disappointed me were the plot holes in the story. No background into this cult they were involved with, and what happened to Olivia? When Juliet found her sister alive, it wasn't clear what happened after that. Overall, not the worst episode I've seen, but by far not the best.

Ultra Disgusting
VanillaLimeCoke15 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This was by far the most disgusting X-Files episode ever. Well maybe but if not, one of the most with Sangunarium coming in with it.

The premise and plot was clever but just the blood and gore was extremely extreme. I thought they had softened up on it this season but no, guess not.

The only good part was the comic relief with mulder finally having to wear glasses.

Why all the negative reviews...
stuartcunliffe3 May 2019
Ok, to sum up i've seen all x files up to this one. Enjoyed this, because of all the bad reviews i almost didn't watch it, the AI episode a few back was probably the only episode i've ever turned off it was that bad. This episode is about fear of getting old, manipulation and extremes people are willing to do to avoid it. Enjoyed the performances from other cast members, qwirky at times beyond the obvious blood. If you're a fan and and watched the earlier episodes i know it's not quite the same, but this was ok. As other reviewers have mentioned...'Home' comes to mind but it certainly isn't that, but then that's one of the finest...give it a try.

I want to ... watch better episodes!
fil-nik0915 March 2018
This one was rather uninteresting. The opening scene did promise a more interesting episode, but in the end all looked rather empty, disappointing and ... not so well connected.

The story about eternal youth and beauty intertwined with faith and you get pretty nothing.

Plus, I could not help but wonder if the episode was kind of a mockery towards Scully/Gillian and all her botox/surgeries or whatever she had to look younger.

6 from me.

What about SciFi/Horror Show do people not understand?
feedandseed-9921018 March 2018
Any fan of The X-Files should be familiar with the show's periodic and famous forays into the truly disturbing in episodes such as "Home", "Sanguinarium", and "Our Town." "Home" had a hard time getting past the censors and after it's initial airing was not rerun on network TV for many years. So nothing about "Nothing Lasts Forever" is really out of keeping with The X-Files more gruesome offerings which dabble in such subjects as cannibalism to stay young (Our Town), organ theft to prolong life (I Want to Believe), incest (Home) and parasitism (Sanguinarium). Director James Wong, who also works these days on American Horror Story clued most of us into the fact that this was going to be a bumpy, bloody ride. That may not be your cup of tea, but it is completely in character for the show. What is also keeping in character with the show is that some of the most gruesome cases also serve as a backdrop to some of the most personal discussions between the two leads. That is also the case for Nothing Lasts Forever in which we find Mulder and Scully having deeply personal conversations about Scully's faith and the future of their relationship in between the machinations of the cult of personality and internal organs. For fans, and especially shippers, who have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the show to make a definitive statement on where Mulder and Scully's relationship stands before the series' ends, this episode is an instant classic.

Vampires don't sparkle
tsoderlu27 March 2018
Not for the faint of heart, kinda gory. Not very good episode, could have been much better if it delved deeper into good vs evil duality as many classics before. Unless you wanna draw arbitrary connections to the cult of your choice or real cannibalism/vampirism I guess what we can say about the episode is that real vampires definitely do not sparkle..

Too many plot-lines and no plot.
safeJ30 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with other reviewers about this episode going overboard with the blood and gore. Too many possible plot ideas for one show, and nothing for Mulder and Scully to do but to talk philosophy between themselves, speaking in soft tones in a hybrid, hypothetical church (not Roman Catholic, not mainstream Protestant -- possibly Anglican but with the Latin hymn at end being out of place for that). Didn't expect Scully to be so religious!

We have Vampira/has-been actress as the main character here, and the bizarre pseudoscience for living forever for the elite few, the gullible followers, and the superhero revenge-seeking sister. Did have a few bits of comedic bits, however. OK episode, but could easily be passed up without missing anything necessary for progress of the season's plot.

What a cheap B-movie horror story
jaz-1555222 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'll think it's time the close the X-files after season 11, there are too many bad episodes and this was a bad one, extremely disgusting bloody, a very weak story line and a sort of Marvel superhero female ninja. Simply bad.

Fantastic, creepy and in the end touching
brian-wiz2 June 2019
This is another amazing episode in the great 11th season. The negative reviews are baffling to me.

This is creepy, funny and has one of the best scenes ever between Mulder and Scully at the end.

My only wish would have been a better opening episode to the season and we may have gotten a 12th one.

Bloody
ndwolfwood376916 March 2018
No there is no metaphor about democrats as stated ignorantly in another review. It's just a bloody episode that tried to rely more on shocks than plot. It actually would have worked a lot better with some editing. It takes too long to go nowhere.

The absence of a plot hidden behind gore
kuarinofu19 March 2018
Well, this season was a mess.

Now, standing before the finale, all I can say is - please, end this. These characters and actors don't have to suffer any more.

This episode, although not the worst by this season standards, was still underwhelming at best. The story was just uninteresting. It was weird for the sake of being weird. Buffed with eerie laughs and tons of graphical gore for no good reason. You know your story sucks when you're not sure if its supposed to be funny or frightening.

Mulder and Scully get not that much screen time and even then they barely even move in this one. They do almost no actual investigating, but nobody really cares, even their colleagues. The episode moves itself when needed anyway. This also has a weird superhero revenge subplot and religious overtones handled so poorly it makes you cringe.

The ending dialogue hints on something important coming up in the last episode, yet I won't spoil it for you.

Final verdict - instantly forgettable.

Essentially they describe the Democrats as a bunch of Vampires
MuveeLover16 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Episode's about a vampire cult that sucks life out of innocent victims and even their followers. Vampira promises eternal life and bliss to the followers but they're really hoarding eternal life for the inner circle. And none of this happens without help from their non-cult helpers. Writers never explain why the non-cult doctors carve up organs or where they get the victims, but it's clear that even the true believers wind up getting eaten from a blender by Vampira. The only metaphor that works is this cult is the Democratic party that will enslave and eat all of us eventually, which is accomplished by the helpers outside the cult batcave. Spoiler: even the ending is lacking because it focuses on Mulder and Scully and totally ignores the aftermath of the cult. I liked the technology episode before this one much more.

Nothing Lasts Forever
bobcobb30114 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been an interesting episode: a woman who uses organs and loyal followers to stay young forever, but it never became as chilling as it needed to be and they caught the bad guy way too quickly.

Also, they tried to make a big statement about religion and belief in this episode, but it felt out of place. Why use this premise to prove that point?

Don't understand the Gripe here, this was great
XweAponX11 May 2018
It couldn't be more gross than Grotesque or Our Town. Or weirder than Red Museum. Or as disgusting as Sanguinarium. Even though some of the same topics are in this one. And some of the same gruesome special effects, body parts, and fluids.

I had not recognized Fiona Vroom from the last time I saw her as the cool alien chick from Star Trek Beyond, in fact I mistook Carlena Britch for her for a moment, as she was the one hanging from ropes and doing stunt stuff. Fiona was playing the same person across a gap of about 50 years. Enough time to grow old, but she wasn't. For some reason.

In fact this episode has a lot to say about Skully's Faith. And that Mulder, although he does not share it, will support her. This is the closest Mulder gets. He goes to Church, he even lights a prayer candle. Even though he mistakes it as a birthday candle.

All we know, is a Girl "Juliet", is a modern day Van Helsing of sorts. Issues like aging, Immortality and Vampirism, Religion are all mixed up, as if in a blender, an item which is also used and abused in this episode.

We know that Gillian has said she does not want to do more, so of course the real possibility of the show finally ending is being faced. Although I don't think 6 episodes and then 10 episodes make a very good season 10 and 11. I am very disappointed, not in any of these episodes, cos hey, it's The X Files. But in that we, the fans have been cheated out of two full seasons. Because there is just so much happening in the world today that could be given The X Treatment, and 16 episodes are not enough. And we didn't get to see much of Skinner or Kersh. X-Files works best as an anthology series, not as an episodic series. So there was just not enough time to tell as many great stories as we had in the first 9 seasons. And the story here represents about 1/3rd of the overall X-Files stories.

It's The X-Files, so what were ya expecting, Bambi? Sorry, this is more like Bambi meets Godzhilla. This story is exactly what the series is about. This was like last year's "Babylon" which was also an important and powerful episode, and people just don't get it, especially when they are being made the object of a parody.

Both Fiona and Carlena are given nice "meaty" roles... Fiona sings! She makes us believe that she is who she is acting. And Carlena becomes a mini Gina Carano.

If I Had a Hammer
padresteve28 December 2023
This episode is a great homage to the Hammer horror films of the 1950s through 1970s. It is also a great story of the darkness of religion gone bad and the quest for everlasting life on earth. It is also an interesting look at legitimate faith and struggle with it. It is also a nice story of a timeless relationship between Scully and Mulder. It is a fitting episode about their relationship to begin winding up the series. It also has a good number of tongue and cheek jokes between Mulder and Scully, including one that is something that most men have done at least once with the woman they love, not noticing a change in hair style. I was really disappointed to see the number of bad reviews about the gore of the episode because it was so obvious that they didn't understand the play between this and the Hammer films. Admittedly, none of them were really great films, but they were classic horror schlock that starred some great actors, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, as well as some really beautiful actresses, even if most were B movie scream queens. Worth the watch.

Mulder: Well, I may not believe in God, but I believe in you. And therefore I speak to Him through you.
bombersflyup17 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing Lasts Forever is about a cult, stealing human organs to reverse aging.

A lackluster episode we have here, with some gore to boot. With no investigation, Mulder and Scully never delve into what was going on, or why or when. We spend an ample amount of time with this annoying Barbara character and get nothing out of it.

Episode already forgotten
bjornvalden19 March 2018
It seems that James Wong never has directed before. I understand why the episode sucks now. First and last directing job maybe. An amazing director can see if a script is wrong and change it. I'm sorry for him, getting a script that stinks.

What a load of bloody crap!
stunt-797-7566516 March 2018
If you don't work in slaughter house don't watch it. Otherwise feel free: red meat all over, tons of blood and... eating raw human meat, drinking blood from a glass etc. Plot non existent, just pure DISGUST all the time. No twists, no mistery, no investigation, no surprise. Mortician's dream - waste, bowels, dead meat. CRAP.
