Looking for adventure?
Ed-Shullivan5 September 2018
Mayans M.C.'s pilot episode has exceeded my expectation of this spin-off series of that other FX biker outlaw series that will go unnamed. A sufficient amount of artillery action, drugs and crime were delivered without having to overdo it simply for the gratification of a few who enjoy that kind of violence.

Oh sure, the Mayans have their own way of interrogating their enemies which may be a little unrealistic but there is a reason why the term "an arm and a leg" is used when a costly decision or error is made. Watch the pilot episode to get my drift.

The main character is a young Mayan M.C. prospect named Ezekiel 'EZ' Reyes played by JD Pardo. EZ recently got out of prison after serving an 8 year term and while he was in the slammer he found out his girlfriend was expecting his baby. EZ seems to have a head on his shoulder so we are to assume he eventually will do well within the M.C..

EZ also has an older brother named Angel (played by Clayton Cardenas) who is a full patch rider in the Mayans M.C.. The two brother's father whose name is Felipe Reyes is the local butcher who appears to be carrying the world on his shoulders. Felipe is played by the very cool and always in control actor Edwards James Olmos who is a well known star both in film (1988- Stand and Deliver) and in older TV series such as 1984 - Miami Vice, and 2002 - American Family.

I like where the series is taking its viewer audience and how the young prospect named EZ's wit will be pitted against the chapter's President, as well as the drug cartel head named Miguel Galindo played by Danny Pino who previously starred in TV's 2003 - Cold Case series, as well as 2011 - Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

EZ's past love life is evident throughout the pilot episode and the series also outlines where EZ's love life may be headed in future episodes. There is a lot going on in this pilot episode and EZ's introduction to us the audience in the pilot episode is starting from the ground up...literally.

I like very much what I have seen so far and it is worthy of a 9 out of 10 rating.

Not bad, but not too good either

For me, it's not too good because I can see a predictable season after this pilot. But anyway, my expectations are not to high and I'll enjoy good action scenes and good music, Kurt Sutter being very good at this

The next chapter...

Picking up some years after the events of Sons Of Anarchy, Mayans M.C. begins a new story. Unlike SOA, the main character here is a prospect, rather than a VP and I think it'll work. There were some twists and turns, and it uses flashback moments which SOA didn't. A good start and it'll only get better. Loved the cameos.

Explosive Series Opener Strikes Gold!
Dan1863Sickles7 September 2019
I always enjoyed Sons of Anarchy, but this "spin off" series actually improves on the winning formula in a number of ways. The Mayans' story actually has a better mix of the jarring elements that made SOA great. There's plenty of gunfire, fist fights, chase scenes, and the sacred brother hood of proven warriors.

But this time around, the romantic intrigue is woven much better into the plot. The main character, EZ Reyes, has the tough, clean-cut looks of a typical motorcycle gang prospect. But it becomes clear in the riveting pilot episode that he's much more than a young warrior looking to prove himself to his brothers. EZ was once a standout Stanford student -- and he's also done time in prison. EZ was framed and lost everything -- including the love of golden girl Emily, a deeply thoughtful and caring young woman who is now married to a suave, handsome drug lord named Miguel Galindo.

Can EZ earn his patch, bring down Galindo, and win back his golden girl, or all of the above? And can he do it without losing his freedom, his life or his family honor?

All that would be enough, but there's so much more. It would be so easy for drug lord Galindo to be an abusive creep, and for his stunning Anglo wife Emily to be nothing but a weak-willed punching bag. But Danny Pino and Sarah Bolger have an almost magnetic chemistry from the moment they're first introduced. EZ is going to have his hands full breaking up this marriage -- assuming that's really what he wants.

But what does he want? Where do the mysterious meetings fit in? What about those tunnels under the boarder? Who are all those little kids in mouse masks?

MAYANS succeeds at blending so many different classics, everything from THE GODFATHER to BREAKING BAD. And the mood can shift from crime drama to mystery to soap opera to comedy at any time. The cast is brilliant, the scenery is beautiful, and the camerawork never stops catching your eye.

MAYANS is off to a roaring start!

Perro/Oc
Prismark109 February 2019
A strong first episode lays out its stall. It even includes a guest biker appearance from the Sons of Anarchy.

Set in a Southern Californian border town. The Mayans are a close knit gang working with the Galindo cartel to run drugs for them. They have to contend with a young head of the cartel who treats them like lackeys. This lack of respect irks them.

Ezekiel 'EZ' Reyes is the new recruit, helped to be admitted to the Mayans Motorcycle Club by his brother. EZ is clever, he has a photographic memory. He looks like someone who should not belong in this kind of life but he wound up in prison. He lost his promising college prospects and his beautiful girlfriend in the process.

In the first episode the Mayans need to discover the people who stole from the gang in a carefully rehearsed heist. If they do not get the perpetrators, the cartel will go after one of them instead. The clock is ticking.

By the end of the first episode, we learn that everything is more opaque. Characters have hidden motives, nothing happens by random chance.

The only moral centre seems to be Ez's father, the local butcher played by Edward James Olmos.

There is grimy feel to this series and of course there is no cowboy wearing a white hat, it is all shades of greys.

A promising start to the series
DVD_Connoisseur3 February 2019
"Perro/Oc" shows great promise for this sequel to "Sons of Anarchy".

The production is glossy and different enough from its predecessor to immediately stamp out its own identity. This has the potential to be an even better show.

There are a few familiar faces to ensure a sense of continuity with the earlier series, too.

Violent, funny and gripping, this instalment bodes well for the future.

Griping the handle bars for another great Sutter ride
coastie-9123817 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished SOA a couple weeks ago, it is one of my top series. I started Mayans MC and after the first episode I will finish off the Sutter series, he and Taylor Sheridan are probably the top two writers of our time. I love seeing actors appear in different series with different characters for the same writers. It shows loyalties are still present in today's world.

As for episode 1 of Mayans it did not disappoint, I was concerned that it would not hold up to the SOA level of expectations, however it did, and while still feeling SOA withdrawals when I saw SOA ride into the cemetery it was like the feeling when you see long lost friends returning. A feeling of " This is going to be great " Thank you Mr. Sutter.

OMG! I'm So Bored!!!
baxter_clete30 May 2022
I can't get past the 2nd episode!

I'm having major S. O. A withdraws, and I want to like Mayans so desperately! But there's NO likable characters in it. And it's SO BORING! There's plenty of action! But there's no story!

Does it get any better? Cause if not I'll just have to keep watching SOA eps over and over.
