"I Love Dick" is a live action short film that was released 1.5 weeks ago and it is an Amazon pilot episode that may picked up for a series if enough people end up liking the episode. The director here is Jill Soloway and it is based on the book by Chris Kraus. This is also why the plot summary listed here on IMDb has very little to do with the action of this half-hour movie. I guess this is what happens later in the movie. Jill Soloway is one of the most successful television directors right now and won her first Emmy last year, again nominated this year for her work on "Transparent". Without having seen that one i guess it is slightly similar compared to this one as it is a mix of comedy and drama and looking at Soloway's older works I guess this is exactly her area of expertise.

The three lead actors here are played by Kevin Bacon, Kathryn Hahn and Griffin Dunne. I think the trio is talented and getting a guy like Bacon as a regular on a television series would be pretty huge. Hahn needs to be careful that the audience will not start disliking the show just because they dislike her character. But I still think she gives a good performance and so does Dunne. In my opinion, the only somewhat problem here was the writing. The constant "Dick" references were pretty cringeworthy, especially in the first talk between Hahn's and Bacon's characters. Also, these short intermissions with "Dear Dick" felt really awkward and I believe they should get rid of these. Maybe the best would even be to give Bacon's character a completely new name and this show also a new title. "I Love Dick" is pretty bad I must say due to the obvious implication.

Other than that, I thought this was a good watch. Like I said, the lead actors gave strong performances and I really like Kevin bacon, which helps a lot in my case. The dinner table sequence was extremely entertaining to watch and the best aspect about this short film. I think this is possibly the best of the three suggestions so far, very much on par with JCVD's work I guess, maybe even better if they sort certain things out. To me, this gives off a certain vibe like Matt LeBlanc's "Episodes", another show I like and I'd give "I Love Dick" (seriously, pick another name) a go if it gets picked up. Until then, I recommend this introduction to the characters we have here.
