Warning: Spoilers
For the full first season, the diminutive monarch must tussle with those around her for respect. This includes husband Albert. During her pregnancy and especially after giving birth, the Queen is treated like a fragile flower. She is put in a king of big girl baby carriage and carried around. She has finally had enough, jumps out, and heads down the stairs. To her surprise, she has been kept in the dark about affairs of state which really angers. Albert, for all his good intentions, has been perpetuating this. This includes the involvement of British soldiers heading into the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan. This, as history tells us, led to disaster for their men. The majority party in Parliament has allowed this to happen and Albert felt powerless. Victoria goes back to enforcing her rights as Queen, delivering a blow to the pompous understructure of the realm.

Warning: Spoilers
As an American viewer I am not as familiar with the war in Afghanistan at this time as people in the UK may be, but it seemed like an odd choice to start the new season.

It was a good episode that really captured the struggle for Victoria to maintain her power, and the unique dynamic she has with Albert.

A good start and let's hope the quality continues throughout the season.
