The first episode does a nice set up of this thriller. There are a lot of moody shots of the marshes.

David Collins was convicted of the murder of his wife, Tara and imprisoned for seven years.

This is the bit I do not understand. He has been released on a technicality because the jury could not agree on a verdict and this was the third jury trial. So he was never convicted by a jury but held on remand?

The legal research looks iffy to me because it would had been better to portray the case to have gone to an appeal so the judge decides whether the verdict was safe or not after legal arguments.

Now he is a free man David finally gets to grieve for his wife and is angry at the world. He gives an unpleasant aura as he lashes out against various people, resorting to violence against one ex friend and breaking into the house of the man who was having an affair with his late wife. Obviously the writers want to show that David is a nasty piece of work.

The police chief decides to take the case off the original investigator, DI Beech and tells him that he wants to bring in a fresh pair of eyes. So he hands it to Beech's girlfriend!

Tara's sister and brother in law have been looking after Tara and David's two children for the last seven years. They now have to face the reality that they may have to hand the kids back to him after making David out to be their mother's murderer.

It certainly is contrived and also not that original. Both David and DI Hudson will go through the evidence again, I just hope that David can control his temper.

Really the person David assaulted (also the godfather to one of his children) should had called the police, which would had made it difficult for David to get access to his kids.

Slow to start, but the series looks good.

I can see from the reviews on the main thread that people have enjoyed it, and thought highly of the series. If I'm honest I thought the first part was a bit of a drag, a little slow, a little boring. The trailers made it look exciting, dramatic, with lots happening. I didn't get much of that in this opening episode. Very well acted, Lee Ingleby was excellent, Hermione Norris and Daniel Ryan the same, I had hoped for more from Elliot Cowan, a fabulous, formidable actor, a little underused, but hopefully more to come.

I'm sure better things wait ahead, first part, a little dull. 6/10
