Anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional household knows just how traumatic childhood can be. In Moon Garden, writer/director Ryan Stevens Harris visualizes those traumas as the nightmarish denizens of the dark, industrial wasteland that a young girl finds herself trapped in.
Emma lives with her parents Sara and Alex. They love Emma, but they don’t love each other anymore. After getting a scare one night she runs to their room, only to encounter something even scarier, the two of them in the midst of a loud, intense argument. Running from it she trips and takes a fall down the stairs which leaves her in a coma. Her struggle to awake from it becomes a nightmarish trip...

The last 10 years or so has seen a huge influx in post-apocalyptic movies. After an initial glut in the 1980s (thanks to the Mad Max series and its countless cheap knock-offs), the genre faded back for a number of years, but has come back with a vengeance in the 2000s and beyond, maybe because it’s an easier way to shoot a movie on a low budget, maybe because of the popularity of The Walking Dead, or maybe because the political climate has grown more tumultuous and divisive over the last decade, making many of us wonder how we’re going to continue living together as a society. Apocalyptic movies play directly into those fears.
What Still Remains, the first feature film from writer/director Josh Mendoza, is interested in exactly these kinds of questions. It’s a relatively intimate apocalyptic movie set years after things have fallen apart and...

Three years in the making, Joe Cole starrer A Prayer Before Dawn will start its theatrical release this weekend. The A24 title, which debuted at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, is based on a non-fiction book written by Billy Moore, played by Cole in the feature, which opens in select cities Friday. The Wolfpack filmmaker Crystal Moselle returns with her narrative feature debut, Skate Kitchen, which premiered at Sundance where Magnolia Pictures caught the film in January. The film follows a group of young women who she met on the subway in a story that has some parallel to their real lives. And Oscilloscope is opening Madeline’s Madeline with newcomer Helena Howard along with Molly Parker and Miranda July. Also a Sundance debut, the company said it has been championed by critics, which it hopes will overcome skepticism by some exhibitors. The company said its trailer, however, has reached ‘cult’ status.

There are two kinds of people still watching The Walking Dead: those who love the gore quotient and believe zombies are the true enemy of the people and those who understand that the undead are merely a catalyst to expose the evil that has always lived within. I’m of the latter group because the drama is always more real when it builds between two very different people trying to survive via diametrically opposed ways than when it’s just the living bashing the skulls of unfeeling hollow shells. So it intrigued me when hearing zombie film What Still Remains called an apocalyptic thriller. The two descriptions are hardly mutually exclusive, but they do both sell vastly different content. Writer/director Josh Mendoza’s world isn’t being consumed. It already has been.

People become their own kind of monster. Spotlight Pictures has released the first trailer for the indie post-apocalyptic thriller titled What Still Remains, from writer/director Josh Mendoza. We've been getting quite a few of these indie post-apocalyptic films recently, and this one already reminds me of all the others. Lulu Antariksa stars a woman struggling to survive in a world long-since destroyed by disease. When a lonely traveler offers her a place in his community, she must decide if the promise of a better life is worth the risk of trusting him. Also stars Liam Hemsworth lookalike Colin O'Donoghue, plus Dohn Norwood, Peter O'Brien, Mimi Rogers, Jeff Kober, Roshon Fegan, Siena Goines, Chris Ellis, and Tobias Jelinek. This unfortunately doesn't look unique or good in any way. But happy to share the trailer anyway. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Josh Mendoza's What Still Remains, direct from YouTube...
