The Drama League Awards unveiled their slate of winners at an in-person ceremony on Friday, May 17. The event was hosted by Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, where attendees toasted the best of Broadway and Off-Bradway.
The biggest winner of the day was Sarah Paulson, who claimed the coveted Distinguished Performance Award for her fiery role in “Appropriate.” That play, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, also took home the League’s trophy for Best Revival of a Play.

The Distinguished Performance Award is unique in that a performer may only win the award once in their career. After prevailing, they are never eligible again. The category is also a massive catch-all race that includes actors of all genders, roles of all sizes, and both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. This year, 54 thespians were included as nominees.

Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has acquired North American VOD rights to the drama-thriller “The Ghost Trap” and the social drama “Global Harmony,” the company announced during the Cannes Film Market. Allen Media also recently unveiled plans for a third installment in its successful “47 Meters Down” shark franchise.
“The Ghost Trap” (pictured) is the story of a young lobsterman who is forced to choose between right and wrong when his girlfriend suffers a traumatic head injury when she is swept off his boat by a rogue wave and rival lobstering family sabotages his gear, sparking a deadly trap war.
The film stars Zak Steiner (“Euphoria”), Greer Grammer (“Deadly Illusions”), Sarah Catherine Hook and Steven Ogg (“Westworld”). James Khanlarian makes his feature directorial debut, directing from K. Stephens’ script, which is based on the book she authored by the same name,...

Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.
Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.
Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

Close races and sharp elbows are likely when the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced Tuesday morning. With so many shows opening during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominators might still be clearing their minds — and maybe taking a moment to eat and breathe — as they ponder and re-ponder the 36 productions that opened on Broadway between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.
Some of the nominations are no-brainers: The much-praised and hugely popular Merrily We Roll Along is a sure bet for all concerned, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, Here Lies Love, Water for Elephants, I’m looking at you.
A selection of categories will be read live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 am Et, and a full livestream of the announcements will follow at 9 a.m. Et on the official Tony Awards YouTube page.

The 2023-2024 Broadway season that kicked off last June with the opening of “Grey House” featured 36 productions of new and revived musicals and plays. “This crazy whirlwind of a season has finally come to an end,” declares Sam Eckmann as we kick off our final Tony Awards nominations predictions slugfest of 2024. We begin our conversation with the musical categories and the ever-challenging race for Best Musical. Sam and I both feel “pretty secure” about the top three shows – “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and “Hell’s Kitchen” – and we surprisingly concur on the final two slots, predicting “Here Lies Love” and “The Outsiders.” There are so many potential nominees in contention, though, that we cite our alternate picks as I opt for “Days of Wine and Roses” as my number six, and Sam goes with “The Notebook.” Watch our full Tony Awards video slugfest above.

The 2023-2024 Broadway season has been positively packed with an abundance of talent as dozens of new productions danced across New York City stages. The nominating committee for the Tony Awards usually does a great job in selecting the best of the best, thanks to a fair system that requires committee members to see all eligible productions. But given the sheer volume of shows this season, David Buchanan and I thought it best to remind these voters of contenders most in need of recognition.
David and I sat down to stump for 10 Tony Awards hopefuls who find themselves on uncertain ground heading into nominations (plus a few shoutouts to some stellar designers). Watch the full video slugfest above to hear our passionate pleas to the voters on the nominating committee. Hey Tony voter nominators, please don’t forget these incredible artists!

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the third time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 19, to discuss eligibility of 8 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
They discussed eight productions: “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Doubt,” “The Notebook,” “An Enemy of the People,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Who’s Tommy,” “The Outsiders” and “Lempicka.” The group also met during the winter to discuss late fall and winter openings, but those determinations were not made public until now. Those shows include: “I Need That,” “Harmony,” “Spamalot,” “How to Dance in Ohio,” “Appropriate” and “Prayer for the French Republic.”
The most notable ruling is that “Appropriate” will compete as a revival. The hit play from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has never been seen on Broadway before this season, but previously enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run with a different director and cast. “It’s the role of a lifetime,” exclaims Chip Zien in reference to his character Rabbi in “Harmony.” The actor’s agents were initially hesitant to send him the script for the Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman musical, as Zien wanted to pull back from the typical rabbi roles he frequently played. But, this character wasn’t just any rabbi. He had a remarkable true life story as a member of a notorious singing ensemble which rose to fame while Nazis rose to power. “It was a brilliant, period-specific score, and the whole thing has just been a thrill from the get go,” says Zien. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Modern co-op games are often manifestations of a troubled mind. There are few instances where these games know exactly who they are (with a few broken bits), and at some point, devs and designers manage to fix it. Unfortunately, that’s simply not the case with Ascendant Infinity, an online co-op title being developed by PlayFusion.
At its foundations, Ascendant Infinity is a competitive co-op title that mixes PvE elements with 3v3v3v3 gunplay. The developers have tried convincing players that the game has everything you’d need for an adrenaline-filled first-person shooter experience that doesn’t take itself seriously. Well, that’s unfortunate, because I hope the makers of this game take it seriously and fix its core problems.
At the time of writing, the Closed Beta version of the game is live between April 5 and 6.

The Baker. Mendel. Rabbi. Three iconic roles created by beloved stage veteran Chip Zien. The last of those three comes from “Harmony,” the new musical from Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, which played its final performance on February 4. But closing notices be damned; Zien is giving the performance of his life in this juicy role. The actor somehow missed out on Tony nominations for those other classic characters, but after a Broadway career that has spanned five decades, voters simply mustn’t pass up the chance to give this actor his very first Tony nomination.
Zien first came to prominence for originating the role of The Baker in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Into the Woods” in 1987. Though that classic musical received 10 Tony nominations (including a lead actress victory for his co-star Joanna Gleason as the Baker’s Wife), Zien was not one of them. This was the start...

Broadway said goodbye last week to two well-regarded but underperforming productions, with both Harmony and Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch posting better-than-usual weekly box office as last-chancers grabbed seats.
Harmony, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical about the real-life 1920s German singing group the Comedian Harmonists, filled a robust 99% of seats at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, grossing $853,055 for the week ending February 4. That’s a bump of $145,978 over the previous week.
Purlie Victorious, the universally acclaimed revival of the Ossie Davis comedy starring Leslie Odom Jr. and Kara Young, grossed $706,882, a boost of $58,090 over the previous week. Still, the production filled only 81% of seats at the Music Box.
In all, the 25 Broadway productions grossed $23,493,675, a slight 5% bump over the previous week (and nearly identical to last year’s gross for the week). Total attendance was 213,281, about 2% over the previous week and 9% over last year at this time.

Peter Morgan’s play Patriots, the drama about the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s fall, will transfer from a celebrated London run to Broadway this spring, with previews beginning April 1 at the Barrymore Theatre ahead of a reported April 22 opening.
The limited engagement will run through June 23.
The play, produced by Sonia Friedman with Rupert Goold directing, will star Will Keen, reprising his Olivier-winning performance as Vladimir Putin, with Luke Thallon, also a West End cast member, playing Roman Abramovich. Michael Stuhlbarg will portray Boris Berezovsky, with additional casting to be announced.
Official synopsis: In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the new Russia belongs to its oligarchs – and no one is more powerful than billionaire Boris Berezovsky. The title of Molly Manning Walker’s feature-length directorial debut seems to promise a self-help guide to navigating the knotty ins and outs of physical desire. And given how it starts, with ready-to-party besties Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce), Skye (Lara Peake), and Em (Enva Lewis) touching down in the coastal town of Malia in Crete, Greece, for their first holiday abroad, one might also anticipate that a redux of Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers is afoot.
Writer-director Manning Walker, though, has cooked up something far less ironic and fragmentary with How to Have Sex, though like Korine’s film, it’s interested in how the prospect of hardcore partying doesn’t transform from fantasy into nightmare in a flash. Rather, it oscillates from one to the other simultaneously, creating a gradual, narcotizing effect that makes sorting out one’s emotions, especially when they’re being newly felt, next to impossible.

A double-holiday week on Broadway – the final week of 2023 – saw a surge in box office, with many shows posting record numbers.
Winner of the week? Disney’s The Lion King, which grossed a massive $4,316,629, not only setting a house record at the Minskoff but a Broadway record for the highest single-week gross ever, a big achievement even when noting that the long-running musical played nine performances, as did other productions over the holidays.
Broadway’s final week of the calendar year included both Christmas and New Year’s Eve, with tourists and high ticket prices sending the total weekly gross for the 27 shows to $45,413,789, a 36% increase over the previous week but about 13% lower than last year’s New Year’s Eve week tally when 33 productions were on the boards.
Total attendance for the week ending December 31 was 256,751, a 14% bump over the previous week (but down 18% from last year). About 96% of all seats were filled,...

Broadway held steady as it continued through the holiday season, with a total gross of $30,723,247 for the 26 productions up a small 4% from the previous week, and attendance of 227,099 up about the same percentage.
Year over year, though, the news isn’t quite so cheery. The $30.7M weekly figure is about 17% lower than the figure from this week last year and the total attendance figure is off about 20% from last year’s 283,548. The 26-show roster is skinnier too: Last year had 35 shows running at this time.
Individually, this year’s productions are, overall, doing well, with 18 of the 26 shows filling 90% or more of their seats during the week ending Dec. 10: & Juliet; Aladdin; Appropriate; Back to the Future; Gutenberg! The Musical!; Hadestown; Hamilton (101%); Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; I Need That; Merrily We Roll Along (100%); Mj; Moulin Rouge! “Jingle bells.” “White Christmas.” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” For his latest concert special, the legendary Barry Manilow doesn’t write all the songs that make the whole world sing — but he performs the heck out of these holiday standards. At 80, the crooner-composer is still going strong with a steady Las Vegas gig, a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the new Broadway musical Harmony, and now A Very Barry Christmas. Manilow gives us a peek. What’s the Very Barry scoop? Barry Manilow: What I like most is that I figured out how to put in a handful of my hits with all the Christmas songs I’ve recorded over the years. (Credit: Ethan Miller/Getty Images) Which hits? I did a whole batch of them: “Mandy,” “Weekend in New England,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “I Write the Songs” and “Copacabana.” What’s...

Broadway began its trek into the lucrative holiday season last week at a steady clip, with the 28 shows grossing a total of $29,163,440 for the week ending November 12. That’s up about 10% over the previous week, though down about the same percentage from last year at this time.
Last year’s take at this point in the fall – $32,314,920 for 34 shows – was closer to pre-Covid pandemic levels: The week ending November 11, 2018, saw Broadway receipts of $36,501,888, while the week ending November 10, 2019 was at $35,399,366. In 2021, when Broadway returned from its year-plus shutdown, the comparable November week was down to $25,565,641.
The better news is that the majority of shows currently on the boards are doing pretty good business, with only six of the 28 shows pulling in audiences of less than 90% capacity.

Broadway loves a recognizable name, a famous band or singer that can fuel a jukebox musical on nostalgia and familiar tunes. To its credit, Harmony isn’t that.
If you’ve heard of the Comedian Harmonists, it’s likely that you’ve either seen Harmony or heard about it. Maybe you’re among the countless Barry Manilow fans who follow his every move (and he’s been trying to move with Harmony for decades). But otherwise, chances are good that you don’t know the Harmonists.
And exactly why you don’t know the Harmonists is the most intriguing aspect of Harmony, the new musical directed by Warren Carlyle opening on Broadway tonight. A Berlin-based vocal and comedy group of the 1920s and ’30s, the Comedian Harmonists were hugely popular, successful and famous in their day, selling millions of records, appearing in dozens of films and selling out major venues across the world,...

Merrily We Roll Along, the Sondheim musical revival starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, was Broadway’s sole sell-out last week, filling every last seat at the Hudson Theatre with an eye-popping average ticket price of $234.40.
The critically acclaimed revival added a hefty $1,811,423 to Broadway’s overall weekly box office take of $26,546,735. Total weekly attendance for the 28 shows on Broadway was 223,151 for the week ending November 5; both the total gross and attendance figures held fairly steady from the previous week.
Though Merrily was the only show at 100% of capacity, a few others came close. Both Hamilton and The Lion King were at 99%, Moulin Rouge! was 97% and I Need That, the just-opened comedy starring Danny DeVito from the subscription-based non-profit Roundabout Theatre Co., filled 98% of seats at the American Airlines Theatre.

After the Southern Gothic thriller elements of 2017’s The Beguiled and the broad rom-com antics of 2020’s On the Rocks, which saw Sofia Coppola departing slightly from the aesthetic territory that she’d staked so forcefully in her earlier work, Priscilla finds the filmmaker firmly back in her wheelhouse. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me, Coppola’s latest is another impossibly photogenic tale of fame, solitude, material wealth, and female desire in a world that often contrives to deny its existence. In conjunction with the film’s release, we ranked all of Coppola’s features to date. David Robb

Eschewing the standby glamour of venues such as Radio City Music Hall or uptown NYC’s United Palace, the 77th Annual Tony Awards have selected Lincoln Center’s Great Stem-sized, roughly 2,600-person capacity David H. Koch Theater as the Broadway bash’s newest venue. The live event will air on CBS on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
The Tony Awards eligibility cut-off date for the 2023-2024 season is Thursday, April 25, 2024 for all Broadway productions which meet all eligibility requirements, and committees will meet at several points in the year to determine category placement and burning questions.
A few of those that will arise are whether the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim musical “Here Lies Love,” the Josh Gad-Andrew Rannells comedy tuner “Gutenberg! The Musical!.” and Barry Manilow’s “Harmony” will be considered new works given their Broadway berths after many years playing off-Broadway and regionally.

Harmony Korine has never made “normal” films. Even his most straightforward feature, probably 2019’s “The Beach Bum,” is pretty subversive by traditional standards. But then you look at things like “Gummo,” “Spring Breakers,” and “Trash Humpers,” and you realize Korine just clearly doesn’t have any interest in making anything the general public would embrace. So, it makes sense that his new film, “Aggro DR1FT,” is shot 100% in infrared and features all the subversion you would expect.

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie initially calls to mind the old saw that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. In the game, the citizens of the fictional Mediterranean island of Atina have lost touch with their ancestors, as well as the spiritual Aspirations that guide humanity from the mirror world of Reverie. But by the time you’ve uncovered the mysteries that unite these parallel worlds, you could say that the main theme of this visual novel is more accurately described as “those who ignore the future are doomed to destroy it.”

A chef at Hollywood hotspot Horses has been granted a restraining order against her husband and restaurant partner after she accused him of physical, emotional and financial abuse over the last decade, detailing incidents in which he allegedly tortured and killed up to 14 animals.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge extended Liz Johnson’s temporary restraining order against Will Aghajanian in May until June 5. He moved to divorce her in January.
Aghajanian denied the allegations in a court filing, saying he’s the victim of Johnson’s “long-term abuse that has occurred through our relationship.” In January, he was denied a temporary restraining order.

After briefly flirting with the idea of a 3D Castlevania with the Nintendo 64, Konami decided to go back to the 2D well with the Game Boy Advance. And seeing as the “Metroidvania” style was still hot, it made sense for Konami to try and continue it. Disappointingly for some, neither of the first two Gba entries were quite able to approach the de facto Metroidvania in Symphony of the Night. With the third and final Gba entry, 2003’s Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Konami appeared to finally get as close to Symphony as they could, despite the hardware limitations. That fact still remains true, two decades later.
Switching away from the traditional Castlevania story, Aria of Sorrow takes place in 2035 in Japan. Soma Cruz is an exchange student living near the Hakuba shrine. During a solar eclipse, Soma visits the Hakuba shrine with his childhood friend, Mina Hakuba. Suddenly, Soma and...

A new stage musical co-written by Barry Manilow opens tonight in New York, but the decades-in-the-making project will have to go on without Manilow there to support it: He has Covid.
“I am heartbroken to say that I have just tested positive for Covid-19 and won’t be able to attend tonight’s opening night performance of my new musical Harmony,” Manilow said in a statement. “This just might be the cruelest thing that has ever happened to me: 25 years waiting for this show to premiere in New York and I can’t attend.”
Manilow’s statement concludes, “Even in the face of this pandemic, we New Yorkers remain the toughest, staunchest people on the planet — so, put on a mask and go see a show!”

“Bridgerton” executive producer and showrunner Chris Van Dusen has shared the titles for all eight episodes of the show’s second season, and they pay homage to Julia Quinn’s book.
On Thursday morning, Van Dusen posted a tweet showing the premiere will be called “Capital R Rake,” which is a nod to Lady Whistledown’s column in the first chapter of Quinn’s “The Viscount Who Loved Me.” It’s what the gossip queen called Anthony Bridgerton (played in the series by Jonathan Bailey) as she described him for her readers ahead of the latest season on the ton — Rake (not rake).
Episode 2 is called “Off to the Races,” and eagle-eyed viewers have no doubt seen images and footage from the new season showing the Bridgerton and Sharma families enjoying horse racing.
“A Bee in Your Bonnet” is the title of Episode 3. Now, book readers know there is something...

There's a new and exciting romance premiering on Gac Family this weekend, just in time for Valentine's Day.
Harmony from the Heart is a labor of love for Jessica Lowndes, who stars in the moving film, which she also wrote and executive produced.
The story follows a young woman named Violet who hopes to change lives through music therapy.
A musician herself, Jessica has crafted a story that has all of the romantic tropes you're used to seeing in similar movies you love to watch.
What you won't expect is how she's managed to infuse it with a unique freshness that sets Harmony from the Heart on a level all its own.
We had the chance to catch up with Jessica over Zoom this week, and she told us how she started writing Harmony from the Heart, which has been years in the making.
This isn't the first movie that Jessica produced,...

Amid declining linear ratings, holiday programming has been one area where viewers had continued to flock to ad-supported networks, bringing in a significant chunk of those nets’ annual ad revenue. As a result, holiday fare has exploded, expanding to a month — or longer — on basic cable networks such as Hallmark, Freeform and Lifetime.
The broadcast networks have been dipping their toes in the arena. NBC, which has probably the most perennial holiday staples with Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The National Dog Show andChristmas in Rockefeller Center, introduced the live holiday musical with the 2013 production of The Sound of Music. Now the network is adding a new element to their holiday slate, and would look very familiar to U.K. TV viewers.
NBC announced today that it will air special holiday episodes of its returning comedies Kenan, Young Rock and Mr. Mayor this coming holiday season. Normally, that would not...

If a year of quarantining and online impulse shopping has left you with an improved home theater setup, you’re not alone. Between TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles, Blu-Ray players, and speakers, our homes are more high tech than ever before. And that’s just on the entertainment side. Everything from lighting to thermostats is becoming automated, making it nearly impossible to do almost anything without some kind of gadget, and keeping track of all the remotes can be challenging. That’s where universal remotes come in.
Universal remotes work just like regular TV remotes, except they can be programmed to operate dozens of devices at a time, which of course means you...

Films that have women’s prison as their main theme tend to linger towards exploitation; in this case, however, Kang Dae-gyu implements a rather different approach, that includes elements of musical and family drama, all of which though, are presented through a filter made of comedy and a general lightness that evidently focuses mostly on entertainment. The result was quite successful, since the movie was the 5th highest-grossing in the country for 2010.
The story revolves around Hong Jeong-hye, who is serving 10 years in prison after killing her abusive husband. However, she was pregnant at the time of the crime, and now, 18 months later, she finds herself raising her child in prison, with the help of a number of sympathetic prisoners, and a kind-hearted jailer named Na-yeong. As the time that she has to give the baby for adoption is up, she experiences much stress, and for reasons...
