It's a smart episode.
Sleepin_Dragon3 June 2019
Britain and France at it again, this time over Spinner's Rock, a piece if land with a dubious past, and uncertain future.

The mystery is brilliant, it's so wonderfully contrived, very smart writing. Two minor gripes, the first being Humphrey perhaps being a little too much of the fool, and the second being the rather rapid demise of the gorgeous, wonderful Lucy Cohu, but then the show has a habit of doing that.

Minor quibbles apart, this was excellent, and had me guessing through the end. A good mix of murder, politics and intrigue. 8/10

One of the better ones during Goodman's run as DI

I've been rewatching this series from the start, and this season has been quite strong following two desultory efforts after Goodman took over as DI.

This was one of the more plausible murders you'll find on this show, with both the method and motive making logical sense. Without remembering the solution itself, I did have a hunch early on as to how the murder was committed, but again, the reason that method never occurred to anyone before was believably explained.

The acting performances were also strong across the board - I find that there's a lot of overacting on this show, especially from the guest characters putting on "Caribbean" accents, but that wasn't the case here. Also, without spoiling anything, the murderer's final bit of dialogue was nicely executed.

Political scandal rocks Saint Marie
safenoe12 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Political scandal rocks Saint Marie, and surprisingly there wasn't rolling television and social media coverage about this, such is the neglect of Saint Marie politics. Governor Caroline Bamber (played by Lucy Cohu) is poisoned, and DI Humphrey Goodman has to solve the political scandal before Saint Marie risks its political structure rupturing. No wonder Commissioner Patterson (played by Don Warrington, who I think has been in every Death in Paradise episode) needs to get to the bottom of things and make sense of the scandal.

Nigel Lindsay plays Andy Hammond, the Deputy Governor (a heartbeat away from the governorship), and Valery Schatz plays Francois Tromeur. Thankfully order was restored and the military didn't need to be sent in.

Interesting story but too much of Humphrey
ctyankee114 January 2018
I always liked Death in Paradise. The island is beautiful, the colors and clothes the people wear are bright and nice. This story is about a woman Gov that dies after she makes her last speech. Everyone seems to love her until it comes out later who might have a reason to harm her.

One part of this episode is about a clash between British and French about "Spinners Rock" a large rock out in the water.

The end tells the story and I won't tell what it is. I mainly want to comment about the changes in Death in Paradise. All the original characters are great but some are not on like DI Poole, Camille and Fidel. Dwayne is still on, the new male cop JP and female Florence all really nice characters and funny at times but smart. The one thing I don't like about these episodes is DI Goodman the head cop talks to much, acts stupid too much even though he solves the murders. Ben Miller/DI Poole the original head of police in Season 1,2 & Season 3 Episode 1 had some funny mannerisms but Kris Marshall/DI Goodman who took Millers place is awful. I think they should cut back on Humphrey's being clumsy so much and all the hand and face mannerisms too much is not funny. This episode is the 5th season. The episodes are good and lots of suspense. A lot more were made after this. I will get back to you another time.

Fine in the long run!

Warning: Spoilers
After "The Complex Murder" was a solid, I was really looking forward to see what rest of the fifth season has to offer. "One for the Road" is definitely not as good as the previous episode, but does not fall far behind.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual here with smooth direction and fitting music. The acting's mostly fine, except for Valery Schatz, who was not as captivating as he should have been.

. The mystery has a lot more red herrings, twists and turns this time around, which made the story fun to watch. The solution about a man, who lost his daughter doing the deed, was satisfying too.

. There are some heartwarming moments in "One for the Road". Especially liked JP and Dwayne rock climbing moment :) The characters are mostly well developed too.

But...

. Parts of the script are unfortunately lazy here. Some clues are found with not much attention given to them and the dialogue can be exposition-heavy at times. Agree that most of the humor falls flat this time around. Kris Marshall is decent as DI Goodman, but his clumsiness does not come as naturally as Ben Miller's.

Overall, a fine time in Paradise.
