Netflix has everyone’s Fourth of July entertainment covered.
Hitting the streaming platform on July 4 is “Stranger Things” season three, which is finally returning two years after its predecessor. Martin Scorsese fans are also sure to be excited once they see four of the director’s films (“Taxi Driver” “Mean Streets” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and “Who’s That Knocking at My Door?”) ready to stream on the first day of the month.
Additionally, Fourth of July celebrants can look back on history with Netflix’s own revisionist features such as “Inglourious Basterds” before enjoying some family fun with more kid friendly options like “Megamind” and “Princess and the Frog.”

‘Giant Little Ones’ Director Keith Behrman on Defying Labels and Finding Authenticity in Adolescence
One of my favorite things about going to the Toronto International Film Festival is finding the time to see the smaller movies that aren’t on everyone’s must-see lists. While the gamble sometimes turns out to be a dud, the risk is easily justified when you’re able to discover a work as genuinely memorable as Keith Behrman’s Giant Little Ones in the process.
A film about adolescence that isn’t afraid to delve into sexuality’s ever-broadening landscape of experimentation and fluidity with still violent repercussions, this story of two best friends falling prey to the social implications of such puts toxic masculinity in the spotlight. Behrman looks at the herd culture of kids desperate to conform to some archaic ideal before then bullying those who don’t in order to uphold their sense of superiority. And while he focuses mostly upon a boy who’s bearing the brunt of that backlash,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Tepid teen romance turned implausible thriller is just about saved by a powerful, and unusually disturbing, performance from Bill Paxton (one of his last). I’m “biast” (pro): love Bill Paxton
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Alas that the most interesting thing about Mean Dreams is that it is the second-to-last performance from Bill Paxton that we will ever get, and a doozy of a performance at that. (Paxton will also appear in The Circle, opening wide in the Us in April, which I have not yet seen; I don’t think any critics have.) Alas for Paxton fans (I am a huge one); alas for The Movies, which will no longer enjoy the understated appeal of his solid presence; and alas for this particular movie, that he makes the rest of it look just...

In a year filled with shocking and untimely celebrity deaths, Bill Paxton’s passing has been especially devastating for the Hollywood community. His spirit and vitality on and off set has left even those who never knew him feeling as if they’d lost an old friend.
For his real friends — those who saw his energy and love for life everyday — his death last month at the age of 61 still feels like an impossible mistake. Nathan Morlando, who directed Paxton on his final film shoot for the indie-thriller Mean Dreams, opens up to People about losing a friend and a unique talent.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

Domestic violence and puppy love aren’t exactly as natural a cinematic pairing as, say, odd couples and wacky misunderstandings. Yet these two elements, along with hard drinkin’ and corruption, constitute the whole of director Nathan Morlando’s “Mean Dreams,” the recently deceased Bill Paxton’s penultimate film. Paxton plays Wayne Caraway, a police officer and father of 15-year-old Casey (Sophie Nélisse, “The Book Thief”). At the beginning of the film, they’ve just moved to a rural part of Canada for reasons unrevealed. Casey immediately meets their neighbor’s teen son, Jonas (Josh Wiggins, “Max”), when her dog wanders off in the woods,...

An aside: I find it to be a personal obligation to mention the untimely passing of Bill Paxton, whose consistently vivid performances will be sorely missed within the cinematic landscape for years to come and to whom I tip my hat. Fortunately, his hard-bit turn in Nathan Morlando’s slice of rural neo-noir, Mean Dreams, wonderfully encapsulates why he was so damn good. At the same time, I also feel it is my responsibility to look at the film around him, and objectively consider its craft and impact without the need to tiptoe.
Nathan Morlando’s second feature, penned by first-time writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, is a thriller both intimate in scale and raw in execution. Nathan Morlando’s second feature, penned by first-time writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, is a thriller both intimate in scale and raw in execution. Bill Paxton took a dark turn in one of his final roles.
The late actor, who died last month, was a master of embodying a wide variety of characters, and his bone-chilling performance as a dirty cop and abusive dad in the Canadian thriller Mean Dreams is no exception.
Pegged as a coming-of-age tale turned crime caper, Mean Dreams — which arrives in theaters on Friday — tells the story of the young romance between two teenagers, Jonas (played by Josh Wiggins) and Casey (played by Sophie Nélisse). When Jonas sees Casey’s dad Wayne, a police sergeant played by Paxton, beating her,...

"If you make me chase you, it's gonna get mean."
The first trailer has been released for an upcoming thriller called Mean Dreams, and it stars the late Bill Paxton in what looks to be a crazy role that is kind of terrifying. Paxton is in full on villain mode in this film and he plays the kind of guy you don't want to mess with. It looks like he gives another great performance.
Paxton plays an abusive father and a corrupt cop in the thriller that follows his daughter Casey as she falls in love with a boy named Jonas and is desperate to escape her father and the broken home she grew up in. It doesn't help that Jonas stole a bag full of money from Casey's dad. The teens' journey together gets insanely intense and violent.

The new trailer for the upcoming thriller Mean Dreams carries the tragic burden of including one of the final roles completed by the late Bill Paxton. The actor, who recently passed away at the age of 61, is beloved by fans of blockbusters and independent film alike, having built a career that spanned four decades. He delivered memorable roles in every genre, but it seems as though this particular parting gift might well be one for the ages. Featuring a nuanced amplification of the kind of disturbing violence contained in his own directorial debut, Frailty, Bill Paxton looms over this promotional footage of Mean Dreams with a terrifying intensity.
Directed by Nathan Morlando (Gangster), and with a script that marks the feature length debut of writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, Mean Dreams centres on two teenagers and their attempts to escape their abusive domestic situations while falling in love in rural America.

Genre filmmaking and cinema as a whole lost an essential player recently with the devastating passing of Bill Paxton. A smart actor with a continual understanding of how to shift his performance depending on genre, Paxton has always been a delight to behold. Fortunately, more of his work is yet to come, as a new trailer for the indie thriller Mean Dreams demonstrates Paxton’s menace and endless watchability.
Penned by first-time writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, Mean Dreams — which premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes — is the second feature directed by Nathan Morlondo. The film follows two teenagers (Sophie Nélisse and Josh Wiggins) on the run from abusive homes and parents (including a ruthless Paxton), who find love and danger on the road to freedom. Ahead of a release later this month, see the trailer below, with a nod to First Showing, along with a poster and synopsis.

"I wouldn't get too attached to that boy..." An official international trailer has debuted for an indie film titled Mean Dreams, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year (in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar) and also played at the Deauville Film Festival and Tiff. The stylish romantic thriller is about Casey and Jonas, two teens desperate to escape their broken and abusive homes after falling in love. This stars Sophie Nélisse as Casey and Josh Wiggins (from Hellion, Max) as Jonas, along with Bill Paxton and Colm Feore. I caught this film at Cannes last year and it's solid, an enjoyable and thrilling story about young lovers. The lead performances are outstanding, making the film better than it really is. Worth a look. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Nathan Morlando's Mean Dreams, direct from YouTube: Mean Dreams is a thriller about a fifteen-year-old boy who steals...

Oh no! Sad news to report on Oscar Sunday. Actor Bill Paxton, known for his iconic suppoting roles in James Cameron movies, has died at age 61. Variety and People have confirmed the news, only saying that he has died due to "complication from surgery" (that's all we know). Paxton last appeared in the films Mean Dreams, Term Life, Nightcrawler, and Edge of Tomorrow. He also plays a part in The Circle adaptation, coming out in the next few months. He never received any Oscar nominations. Paxton's family released this statement: "Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable." This is a tough one, as Paxton still seemed to be working often and was appreciated by many. Bill Paxton was born William Paxton on May 17th, 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas. He moved to Los Angeles at age 18, where he...

Don't even know where to start. Perhaps with the basics: the brilliant Bill Paxton has died, his family has confirmed. He was just 61 years old.

Paxton passed away following complications from surgery. He leaves behind a body of work that’s as broad as it is brilliant. Inevitably, we gravitate towards his roles in Aliens and The Terminator (he was one of the few who could time after time stand the rigours of a James Cameron production, and come out eager for the next), but Paxton’s resume is full of favourites. Twister, Trespass and Big Love, for instance. Plus his character work in the likes of Apollo 13, Tombstone, Predator 2, Near Dark and Edge Of Tomorrow is memorable too.

Jonas works with his father on the farm, while Casey is new to town, as her cop father has just been relocated. October is one of our favourite months of the year, because we can start wearing sweaters, leaves are falling, and we can justify horror movie marathons all month long.
In theatres, however, we are getting a very interesting mix of thrills, scares, laughs, and some indie gems that caught our eye when they played the Toronto International Film Festival last month. That’s right, awards season is on the verge of beginning, and October features a couple of those highly buzzed titles. Among these are Moonlight and The Birth of a Nation, as well as some good old fun at the movies, like Tom Cruise returning as Jack Reacher, or Tom Hanks’ reprisal of Robert Langdon in Inferno.

Krzysztof Kieślowski’s criminally underseen (yet still critically beloved) ten-part series of philosophical films, ”Dekalog,” has been receiving a lot of well-desreverd attention lately. It’s currently back in select theaters for the first time in fifteen years, got the enviable Criterion Collection treatment just this week and NBC is reportedly planning a remake. With all that in mind, we’ve dug up a classic interview with Kieślowski in which he describes his perception of the films and the different styles and genres that each of them possess.

Kieślowski was a master at telling complex stories with layered characters and interconnected plots. With the current rediscovery of his series, he continues to garner posthumous appreciation (he passed away in 1996) as his films seem to resonate more and more with audiences with each passing year. We hope that this trend continues.

You pretty much know exactly what you’re getting when you sign up to watch a new Jim Jarmusch movie, but his trademark subtitles are rarely as intimate or soulful as they are in “Paterson.” Starring Adam Driver in his best performance on the big screen to date, “Paterson” earned unanimous acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival in May and is set to keep goodwill alive at upcoming screenings at Nyff.

Driver plays the titular character, a bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey who seems content living day in and day out according to his simple routine. He drives around the city in his bus, writes poetry, walks his dog, has a beer at the local bar and heads to bed. His wife, Laura (Goldshifteh Farahani), is just the opposite, ever-changing with her dreams and projects.

Bill Paxton is back in familiar territory with Nathan Morlando’s family drama/thriller, “Mean Dreams,” as the film returns the actor to the role of unhinged patriarch that he so chillingly played in his own directorial debut, “Frailty.” Paxton stars in the film alongside “The Book Thief” breakout Sophie Nélisse and up-and-comer Josh Wiggins in the Canadian filmmaker’s feature debut. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Kenyan native Lupita Nyong’o is known for not only winning the Oscar for Supporting Actress for playing slave Patsey in “12 Years a Slave,” but also for doing it it with astonishing style.
But since her 2014 win, she has done more modeling (Mui Mui, Lancome), social media, and theater (playing a 15-year-old Liberian rape victim on Broadway in “Eclipsed”) than high-profile film parts (“Non-Stop”). When J.K. Rowling released the screenplay to “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” in bookstores earlier this year, it grossed over $2 million in just two days in the U.S. and Canada, making very clear that the appetite for new Wizarding World stories is bigger than ever. That fact bodes well for “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them,” the first film in a prequel trilogy that brings the magic of Harry Potter to 1926 New York City.
