Charming little fashion film
bob the moo4 April 2014
During the film you will notice that the characters seem to be wearing clothes that had similar themes or styles and if you do then your sharp eyes are right because this is a film where one of the goals is to show off the new catalogue for designer Rachel Antonoff. That this was a fashion film sort of put me on edge because the previous example of these I had seen was Roshambo which was superficially pleasing but ultimately just one big soft, sexy photo-shoot but with a bit of a through narrative (but not too much of one). I was quite delighted then to find that Crush does not play like that at all – indeed had I not known the roots, probably I would have not noticed the fashion angle.

The plot recreates the story of how the designer's parents met (as described by themselves in discussion) and is acted out. The tone is very light and comic; the narration/discussion drives this as it has a nice twinkle in the eye as it plays, while the visuals are very cute and filled with energy and charm. Of course it has no depth and some may find it just too delightful for its own good but I was surprised by how much it amused me, how much I liked the tone and the comic air it all had. The performances get the tone too and I liked the geeky charm of the lead role (played by Antonoff's brother) while the couple of celebrities in there don't distract too much.

It is all charm and superficiality in some ways, but it works for me and although it is instantly forgettable in its nature, I did find it delightful and watched with a slight smile on my face the whole time.
